I agree. Even the Thai people that he’s interviewing have their own slight accents too. You can tell that some are not native Bangkok speaker and might originally be from other parts of Thailand.

As a native Thai, i personally think that "yanks accent" is easier to understand than the Bri'ish(that's a meme for you). Idk, maybe it was because i learned English through American Entertainments. Well. The Brit have nothing on that front. What did they have? Doctor Who? Way out of trend. The last few seasons ain't even popular. Tried to learn Japanese through Anime, but. Gave up, that one is a whole different beast.
As Malaysian living next to the boarder, I found that your Thai fluency is really cool... ASEAN language is unique even the tone ( intonation ) does matter... But we always appreciate anybody from everywhere if they try to learn about out culture and language. You may use English with us but if you speak local, you definitely talk to our soul...

There are a lot of good lessons in this and kudos to you for opening yourself up to be critiqued. I think the biggest take away is that native speakers of any language are not necessarily the best teachers / coaches of their own language just because they speak the language. Articulation and prosody analysis (which is pretty much what you were hoping for) also needs the ability to understand the nuances of sound and articulation and knowing what's going on in your mouth as opposed to theirs. The advice they gave was trying to be helpful, but wouldn't actually serve to improve what was actually going on. There are just a few tweaks that you could make that would make night and day differences.
As a local Thai who studied at an international school since the start of my academics, I had first hand personal experience of learning Thai and English at the same time. As English was much more commonly used in my school, i picked it up decently sometime in middle school. But it really took me until around high school that I got confident with my Thai skills (probably because I became more focused in trying to read/write/speak/listen by then). My school also allowed me to pick a third languange (between Mandarin, Japanese, French and Spanish), so I also studied Japanese. Weirdly enough, I found the basics of Japanese easier than Thai and there were times that I was more confident with my Japanese. Personally, I think my Thai is now at a good level compared to the average international school student. So to conclude my TedTalk, I actually think Paddy's Thai is of good standard, and I would say that he's probably better than some of my Thai friends. :)
This was such a cool video. I can relate to this. Especially with the written text. At first its overwhelming because it's all together but you will soon be able to recognise where they stop and start mainly from where the vowel is placed. But my hardest struggle is the tones! What about tones!!, because what I think I'm saying is not what the thai people hear Haha.

I'm glad you did this video, it's so great to be humble about your abilities. It helps prove the "fluency illusion" effect. Where you cannot properly judge someone's language ability who are better than your current level. I speak no Thai and the first video I heard of you, you sounded fluent. But I knew that I'm not qualified to judge you. I see the same with Japanese. People would praise non-Japanese natives speaking Japanese "fluently" and these comments get so many likes yet to me it's very clear that person is almost a beginner in Japanese and I can hear the thick accent. Yet those who speak no Japanese could not tell the difference. It's quite fascinating really.

I appreciate your humbleness, as there are days I ask myself - "What do I have to do to speak and understand Thai as well as that person" I'm highly motivated, being married to a Thai person. I really enjoy your video content, and the way in which you put so much effort into understanding /speaking and communicating with others. And no matter how many new videos you upload, it's like you never lose that passion for the Thai language and culture - your earnestness is really refreshing. I think also for Thais, it's - and perhaps I'm only speaking for myself here - it's both endearing and flattering to meet or encounter someone who puts forth so much effort into understanding Thai cultures, traditions and language. I was born in the US to first-generation parents who met here; they instilled in me a strong sense of Thai culture and speaking the language was second nature to me - yet oddly enough, the Thai-American kids I grew up around were mostly disinterested in that part of their heritage. With that in mind, I think that's one of the things about your videos that's quite inspiring to witness - your dedication and passion for the language and culture so sharply contrasts with the friends or community I grew up around or with. I mean, we were all afforded the same opportunities to be or become fluent in their mother tongue, but almost *none* of them were interested in it. Years later, the same children or families seem to have suddenly take an interest in the culture & or language, either for themselves or for their children. The most common complaint I hear regarding this endeavor is that they find it surprisingly difficult (which oughtn't really come as a surprise because with any language, the later you start in life, the more difficult it becomes - as opposed to early immersion from childhood) and often give up for a while or even for good. The reason I brought these things up was to help me make a point regarding your language skill - your speech patters and intonations are very often near perfect and sometimes indistinguishable from native speakers, with the exception of a handful of words here or there - so your interviewees weren't lying when they confirmed note only that your speech is fluent but that it is also very, very good. At any rate, I do hope you continue to make these videos. They're truly well thought out and just darn good content. One other thing - I don't know if this has been brought up anywhere else, but one of the reasons I think your Thai is so good is because it is technically correct - in the past decade or so, the younger generation's speech patterns have changed. It's a bit more slangy, and sometimes even (technically) wrong or lazy pronunciation! And although language does change and evolve, perhaps take comfort in the fact that, compared to some of the (native speakers) kids who speak in this new way, your Thai is, in general, *better* than theirs. (So sorry for the comment-turned-short-essay length...)

As a Thai learner, this was a great video, thanks Paddy. I would also say that you are definitely seem 'fluent' to me. I know there is a debate about what fluency means, but it absolutely does not mean 'perfect' or 'native', but the ability to communicate and be understood, and understand responses, in most every day situations. I look forward to getting to that stage, but I know that improving and learning never ends, and is a life-long endeavour.
100%! I always say the word "fluent" is related to "fluid" and means a language flows smoothly. Yeah some people might argue etymological fallacy but there's already words like "competence" and "ability" for the other nuances of how good a person is at a language so it makes sense to keep "fluent" for this specific nuance, otherwise we don't have a word to describe it and everybody mixes it all up.

This is great! I’ve just started making an effort to learn Thai after having visited there around 20 times already (I know, shame on me for not trying sooner). It’s quite daunting/bewildering but I’ll stick with it because I love Thailand. I think that lady was correct, loving the culture is important in order to be inspired. Thanks again mate.

Paddy, your Thai speaking skill is phenomenal. If you want to go even further, may I suggest singing Thai songs. Or if you want a challenge, Thai Prayers (in Thai-Sanskrits/Pali). These could help with the rhythm of your speech.

Man it feel so good to watch one of Paddy's videos without reading the subtitles. It's been a hell of a journey. But the progress I've made also makes it very apparent how far I still have to go. Like, most of the time I just couldn't understand what the aunty was saying. I guess she used a lot of mannerisms and phrases that I don't know cause damn I was lost

Find it's weakest point or in the other word, your most interested part then tackle it. Step by step. ภาษาไทยง่ายนิดเดียว ฝรั่งบางคนได้กล่าวไว้ (Andrew Biggs).
It’s really subtle, but adding a slight tone swing does help quite a bit if you want to perfect the accent. Also some of the timing between syllables are just a tad off. I’m pretty certain if you adjust and nail those two minor details you would sound like a native speaker. Love the content btw! Consider me added to your subscription list 😉

Good onya mate...thats what its about..i've spoken Bangkok/Thai and Southern Thai(Samui) for 35 years. I just love the language...i think its about being humble in your approach which i think you genuinely are.. I always try to learn new sub dialect stuff along the way. It just makes people happy when they know you take the time to learn.....like In Samui....how you going/ gidday/ good morning? kin khao laow?(have you eaten) Answer Kin laow (ive eaten all good) or really local like.....kin khao kap nam choop (ive eaten rice with spicy dipping sauce, im all good).i think i correct...if im not good correct me so i can be right.... Keep learning bro and to everyone else learn....my next language to learn a bit is Punjabi(why not). Again a few phrases in another or many language gives people joy and shows your not some arrogant one language English only pompous joke. I'm glad you expressed this openly and honestly. I get the same comments from friends. It puts me in a predicament of pressure that I don't welcome. I communicate I don't speak native. Communication is absolutely spot on in any language. To try and speak like a native is impossible. It's like the Chinese restaurant back home. Perfect vocabulary but poor grammar, accent and pronunciation. I am Scottish and cope well with Isaan Thai as it's rough drooling accented. Some say 80% but never scored more. Communication is important, that's what counts, we can ask a dog to sit without barking. Fantastic video many thanks, aim achieved and very modest.

Thanks for another interesting video Paddy. Everyone talks about how hard it is to learn the 44 Thai consonants compared to the 26 English letters. But if you think about it, there's no upper and lower case in Thai, so in English you still have to learn 52 characters all together, Aa, Bb....

For me who works as a EN-TH translator right now, I think English is more difficult, especially grammar part. Thai doesn't have "Tense" rules like in EN. And the sentence structure of EN is more complicated, like S+V.to be+N, S+V.to be+V3, S+V.to be+V.ing, etc.

Fluency is just the quality of how smooth your speech is, and not lexis, pronunciation, or grammar. You're fluent but not perfect. Good video too! I like it, nice interviews too!

I really enjoy your video content, and the way in which you put so much effort into understanding /speaking and communicating with others. And no matter how many new videos you upload, it's like you never lose that passion for the Thai language and culture - your earnestness is really refreshing. I think also for Thais, it's - and perhaps I'm only speaking for myself here - it's both endearing and flattering to meet or encounter someone who puts forth so much effort into understanding Thai cultures, traditions and language.
I was born in the US to first-generation parents who met here; they instilled in me a strong sense of Thai culture and speaking the language was second nature to me - yet oddly enough, the Thai-American kids I grew up around were mostly disinterested in that part of their heritage. With that in mind, I think that's one of the things about your videos that's quite inspiring to witness - your dedication and passion for the language and culture so sharply contrasts with the friends or community I grew up around or with. I mean, we were all afforded the same opportunities to be or become fluent in their mother tongue, but almost *none* of them were interested in it. Years later, the same children or families seem to have suddenly take an interest in the culture & or language, either for themselves or for their children. The most common complaint I hear regarding this endeavor is that they find it surprisingly difficult (which oughtn't really come as a surprise because with any language, the later you start in life, the more difficult it becomes - as opposed to early immersion from childhood) and often give up for a while or even for good.
The reason I brought these things up was to help me make a point regarding your language skill - your speech patters and intonations are very often near perfect and sometimes indistinguishable from native speakers, with the exception of a handful of words here or there - so your interviewees weren't lying when they confirmed note only that your speech is fluent but that it is also very, very good. At any rate, I do hope you continue to make these videos. They're truly well thought out and just darn good content.
One other thing - I don't know if this has been brought up anywhere else, but one of the reasons I think your Thai is so good is because it is technically correct - in the past decade or so, the younger generation's speech patterns have changed. It's a bit more slangy, and sometimes even (technically) wrong or lazy pronunciation! And although language does change and evolve, perhaps take comfort in the fact that, compared to some of the (native speakers) kids who speak in this new way, your Thai is, in general, *better* than theirs.
(So sorry for the comment-turned-short-essay length...)

As a Thai learner, this was a great video, thanks Paddy. I would also say that you are definitely seem 'fluent' to me.
I know there is a debate about what fluency means, but it absolutely does not mean 'perfect' or 'native', but the ability to communicate and be understood, and understand responses, in most every day situations. I look forward to getting to that stage, but I know that improving and learning never ends, and is a life-long endeavour.
100%! I always say the word "fluent" is related to "fluid" and means a language flows smoothly. Yeah some people might argue etymological fallacy but there's already words like "competence" and "ability" for the other nuances of how good a person is at a language so it makes sense to keep "fluent" for this specific nuance, otherwise we don't have a word to describe it and everybody mixes it all up.
God I miss Thailand now. People are just so nice. Very approachable and friendly. Not all, but most of them for sure. 👌🏼

This is great! I’ve just started making an effort to learn Thai after having visited there around 20 times already (I know, shame on me for not trying sooner).

Let’s be honest…. This channel is a fantastic opportunity to chat with lots of cute Thais!!!! When I speak Thai only my wife understands…. After 28 yrs of her never correcting my mistakes we now have our own language!!! Great content …. Idea….. maybe you could introduce one phrase every few videos? Not turn this show into language channel but introduce the language and get more people speaking ….. also …… you could host trips to Thai town to local businesses …. I’ll buy a seat !!! Cheers.

It’s really subtle, but adding a slight tone swing does help quite a bit if you want to perfect the accent. Also some of the timing between syllables are just a tad off. I’m pretty certain if you adjust and nail those two minor details you would sound like a native speaker. Love the content btw! Consider me added to your subscription list 😉

Good onya mate...thats what its about..i've spoken Bangkok/Thai and Southern Thai(Samui) for 35 years. I just love the language...i think its about being humble in your approach which i think you genuinely are.. I always try to learn new sub dialect stuff along the way. It just makes people happy when they know you take the time to learn.....like In Samui....how you going/ gidday/ good morning? kin khao laow?(have you eaten)
Answer Kin laow (ive eaten all good) or really local like.....kin khao kap nam choop (ive eaten rice with spicy dipping sauce, im all good).i think i correct...if im not good correct me so i can be right....
Keep learning bro and to everyone else learn....my next language to learn a bit is Punjabi(why not). Again a few phrases in another or many language gives people joy and shows your not some arrogant one language English only pompous joke.

I'm glad you expressed this openly and honestly. I get the same comments from friends. It puts me in a predicament of pressure that I don't welcome.
I communicate I don't speak native. Communication is absolutely spot on in any language. To try and speak like a native is impossible. It's like the Chinese restaurant back home. Perfect vocabulary but poor grammar, accent and pronunciation.
I am Scottish and cope well with Isaan Thai as it's rough drooling accented. Some say 80% but never scored more.
Communication is important, that's what counts, we can ask a dog to sit without barking.

Thanks for another interesting video Paddy. Everyone talks about how hard it is to learn the 44 Thai consonants compared to the 26 English letters. But if you think about it, there's no upper and lower case in Thai, so in English you still have to learn 52 characters all together, Aa, Bb....

When I speak in Japanese I'm always worried about my accent and then I get discouraged from speaking. For me who works as a EN-TH translator right now, I think English is more difficult, especially grammar part.
Thai doesn't have "Tense" rules like in EN. And the sentence structure of EN is more complicated, like S+V.to be+N, S+V.to be+V3, S+V.to be+V.ing, etc.
Well, coming from a french guy, English tenses are really easy x).
