  • As we continue to build we finally made it to the part where we start using wood! This may not seem like a big deal, but it means the house is going to start going together faster, and it is a medium that I have experience and am comfortable with!

    My Wife and i are starting a very similar project in Colorado this spring. Its been great watching your videos and seeing all the progress you have made. Its given me a lot of confidence in doing all this myself. You guys have done a fantastic job, well done and thank you!!!

    Thank you both for doing the videos. Not only did I learn a lot from them but it slowly gave me the courage to move forward with our build. We now have the first floor and garage framed in and are about to order the I-Joists for the top floor. Your advice to get the DeWalt books was a huge help. Enjoy your home and thank you again.

    I have seen the comments about the sill plate insulation. I think you are eventually going to regret not springing for a rubberized sill plate strip. Spray foaming the edges wont do the trick

    Use a bigger drill bit. One size larger than the bolts.

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  4 года назад +1

      I did end up using one size larger than the bolts, my holes just weren't perfectly aligned and some of the vertical rebars weren't perfectly vertical so it took a little persuasion :) . Thanks for watching, and your comment. I hope you enjoyed the video!

    Good video...just 2 observation:
    1.- Your anchor bolt are all rusted...invest a bit more on non rusted material.
    2.- I see no sealant barrier between concrete and Sill Plate.

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  3 года назад

      Thanks, we sealed the sill area later with closed cell spray foam, and they weren't rusted when we got them, but being in the weather for a while didn't help!

    There is an old statement of wisdom by Justin Bieber, "You don't go to into the music studio with the musicians that you want - you go with the ones that you have."
    Normal people with aspirations to tackle an enormous project like this have to have to look at the big picture, and not get set back by minor bumps in the road.
    I could never do what you all are doing. My wife would never let me.

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  3 года назад

      There were deffinately times where it was hard to see the big picture, but it's paying off for sure! Thanks for the kind words and watching!
      Also maybe if you build your wife a "she shed" first she'll be more open to the idea!!

    No sill seal?

    Was the shimming for your sill plates due to the concrete not being completely level?

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  4 года назад +3

      Yeah the forms were high in one spot an I had planned on finishing that spot to the correct height, but I totally forgot on the day of the pour.

      @@PootsPastures thanks for the reply. I'll be following your journey closely. Glad your ICF video was suggested while I was searching for "ICF crawl space".
      What is your total square footage of the cabin?
      Do you have a final budget in mind (house only, not land or other land improvements)?

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  4 года назад +2

      @@gabelumby8206 the total square footage is 996, the footprint is 32ft x 20ft. And as far as total budget, we should be dried in with windows, doors, siding and roofing for a little under $30,000 so I'm hoping the interior costs about the same so total around $60k for the whole thing

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  4 года назад +1

      @@BrianBriCurInTheOC if I remember correctly about a quarter inch high. I thought about grinding down the concrete to the correct height but wasn't very confident I would get it close enough and don't have the tools to do it myself

      Yes! foam in betweenn the sill and concrete to air seal, we just did it after, and didn't film it.

    No sill foam?

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  3 года назад

      Because of the shimming of the sill a normal sill seal type of foam wouldn't have worked, we did seal it it just happened off camera

    Why an ICF crawl space?

    • @PootsPastures
      @PootsPastures  4 года назад +3

      We decided on an ICF crawlspace because I did not feel comfortable making forms for a monopour out of wood myself. And I did not want to hire somone to do that/ lay block. So the ICF's were the easiest way to go for a DIYer, and it acts as the insulation for what will eventually be a conditioned crawlspace.
      Hope that answers your question! Thanks for watching!
