This is a man with invaluable experience and the quality of everything he does is amazing. His forklift operator had a good touch too, but you can see the builder signaling everyone that works with him calmly and with great perception to the work being done. I couldn’t agree anymore. This is great! Gives me some hope knowing I’m not far off my building my own. I wanna do this on a 20 foot long, 13 1/2 foot high, 8 1/2 foot wide tiny house on wheels. It might be too heavy, but you just can’t beat having a nice cabin.
Those are jealous haters who don’t appreciate good knowledge and hard work like this. Those type of people will never see the light.
That's some beautiful work, I love the way those tenons fell into place...you worked those beautiful, like a fine painting. Mesmerizing- beautiful joinery!! I wanted to get my hands in there, on that sledge. 🤗 That's one stout floor 😲; would make an awesome floor for a woodshop/workshop. It should hold quite a bit of weight without any issues. I wouldn't be afraid to park any type of heavy shop tooling on that floor. I plan on doing just this for my future workshop. Thanks for inspiring. I've always been familiar with the log cabin flooring but just watching you walk through everything leading up to this has sent me over the edge. 😂😂

I was going to use the cabin for a small workshop for using my old hand tools but I think it’s gonna end up being a bunkhouse instead. Lol. When the whole family is here we could use the extra room. I've had a small workshop for decades but something similar happened to the plans of my larger one. 🤕 However, good is on the horizon, a build should be coming into view soon. Looking forward to it, past due, it'll give me more working space...I plan on beefing up the floor like this if I can. You could park just about anything on that floor.

Virginia Reid Howdy Virginia- I don’t normally put in round joists. I was showing how to do round joists and to save a little bit of money on the cabin. I normally frame with 2x10’s or2x12’s. I really enjoyed doing the round logs for joists. God bless you

Iam following the cabin build with close scrutiny. An excellent way to escape debt. Iam debating whether to build one, but unsure of choice of wood in a high rainfall country like Ireland, and dreaded shrinkage and expansion problems since timbers are very long, especially around windows. Your design and methodology are superior to log cabin builds in Finland etc. By installIng the floor before walls, you have a more stable structure to build upon. Concrete foundations and above ground build are also great ideas. Ensure roof overhangs the structure to keep rain off exterior walls.
DRJMF1 Howdy- thank you so much for watching our videos. Hopefully, I will share something that will be of help to you. With the style l do l allow for the settling that takes place. Not knowing what species of wood that is available to you l would say that keeping the foundation high enough off the ground and a roof overhang that is long enough to keep as much rain off the log walls would be a must. Wrap around porches are also good to protect your walls and the extra space is a bonus. Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with. Thank you. God bless you
It’s great that I know a skilled gentleman at hand for advice. I am in a research phase and gathering tools and skills. I use the viking riving method soon to split a storm damage oak tree trunk in Uk which I will share with you soon. And also the method of cutting boards free hand by swinging a chainsaw tip into a chiseled channel.
You serious gotta be a damn fool to 👎 this video. The guy’s busting his ass over here and teaching us how to build our own dovetail log cabin. I’m greatful for channels like this! Good job, sir! You got my seriously thinking about doing this for a 20 foot tiny house on a flatbed. I’m not a big fan of chinking. I like the fully scribed saddle notch, but that takes a long more time to build, and probably more experience that I don’t have.

I thought of doing my floor this way on my cabin I plan to build in Alaska. After seeing this video, I know it's how I'll do it, although my cabin will be full round logs with scarfed saddle notches instead of dovetails.

I used to use boiled linseed oil a lot on my tool handles, etc. myself until I learned about something that works better (for myself anyway). Now I use a 50/50 mixture of pine tar and turpentine. You can get the pine tar from any place that sells equestrian supplies. It's used a lot on horse hoofs.
Russel Stewart Howdy Russel- thanks for the great tip. I ‘ll have to try that. I rolled the linseed on the subfloor with a paint roller after the wood was screwed down. Some people have used old motor oil and deisel fuel. But I like the smell of linseed oil much better. Take care and God bless you

Hello, impressive work. Planning to build my log sauna very similar way. I wanted to build it without nails, or screws, live roof. Is bolts in floor joists nessecary or i could use blind dovetail or even same protruding dovetail as in the corners, but in place of joists?

@@TheBeardedCarpenter Oh good! Yes those lag bolts worked great! I just wanted to make sure pegs could of been used. Pegs are a bit of a new tech for me. Not sure how to best use them, but I have an old barn pushed off its foundation by silver maples and that damn barn is still standing despite the wind and weather we get here. Some is just gravity notches and the main timbers are all pegged with old black walnut.

The plan now is to take it down with an escavator and try to salvage what I can once it is on the ground. The rest will be charcoal.

Would you have any thoughts about using fresh cut hardwoods - various oaks for the floor joists/ sills? I know powder post beetles can be a problem with Oaks. Wondering what your thoughts may be. I know some use Boracare for the hardwoods for other type projects but not certain about large beams for joists. Musing over obtaining the proper penetration. I hate the thought of even cutting a hardwood, but if there are substantially more of those than there are conifers at my new place, I may be pressed to. Any thoughts? Thank you
Howdy Chris- getting all the cambium layer off as soon as possible sure helps. There are people who are mixing Borax and warm water and spraying there logs. Borax is supposed to get rid of bugs and their eggs. I think if you sprayed them soon after cutting it would take care of any infestation problems. God bless
Just in case , maybe later on you could put a barn door on the front and use it to park your trunk in , right , nice and stout !

Sir, thank you for the video. When you said that you had made a light handsaw pass on the shoulder where the first log sat on the Sill, did you mean you scraped out a shallow pocket for the first Log to sit on the Sill? Was this pocket on the first log or the Sill? Thanks in advance.
AS Howdy, when l cut the notch out when it’s on my sawhorses l undercut the shoulders with the chainsaw so I can make the handsaw pass between the log resting on the sill log and the sill log itself. The saw is actually cutting the shoulder on the sill log. Then, I just tap the log over tight against the sill log.
AS I had to look and see which video it was but if you watch episode 22 I show how l do the shoulder cuts and the little folding saw l use. God bless you
Just wondering if the lag bolts were necessary in the floor joists, considering that the dovetails, and the weight of the structure should keep the joists locked in? Just wondering
Howdy Gary- in the old days they probably would have pegged the joists. I have a tendency to go the extra length on what I’m doing. I probably could have gotten by without anchoring the joists but I didn’t want any bounce from a tenon shrinking and being a little loose in the mortice. Thank you for the comment. Quick question: Why did you feel that you needed the lug bolts? Did you not think the dovetails would not be sufficient to hold the joists in place? Thanks.
James Kniskern Howdy James- it’s kinda my nature to just lock things down. I have a tendency to do more than is absolutely necessary. I have all the confidence in the half dovetail joints to stay together. You have a good point and I appreciate you commenting. Take care and may God bless you

How did you manage to get the tops of the floor joists flat and all at the same elevation ?

Love the mix of old and new, I’ve been watching a lot of wooden boat building and was wondering if a tar bedding of the floor joints mortise would be a good idea ?
Robert Hawthorne Howdy- I’m sure it would be ok to do that. I’ve just used Anchorseal for this. When the roof is on there won’t be any water get on them. I also caulked around them. You got a real good idea, though. Old wood ships are really interesting. God bless y’all

Tod Davis Howdy. I made those joists just to show how it could be done and to save some money. It’s a good place to do something like that to get some experience for doing exposed joists for a second floor if someone wanted to use round joists. God bless y’all

Your work is with no standard and wasting a lot of time,see the first bin resting on the main bin position,the big dead knot,and small remaining of the main bin is so little to end,it serve no purpose at all so the rest of the bins,why don't you just lay the bins on the main bin without cutting the main bin.it will be more lasting and stronger.

The instructions contained in your videos would cost thousands of dollars if taken at a technical college. I guess you could call it the "Beared Carpenter Technical College" or BCTC.🏛🪓
Howdy Lowell- yeah, I would imagine it would. I’m just trying to keep some of the old skills alive by sharing some of what I’ve been fortunate enough to learn.
