Gary Larson graduated from my high school. He was well before my time, but several of my teachers would bemoan the fact that they would send him to detention for doodling on the desks. He would be assigned to clean the desks off during detention. The teachers were always wishing they had had the foresight to swap out the desktops and tuck them away to appreciate in value rather than reporting him for it.
Suggestion: set up a couple of tables and put the dishes and cups in front. Pay your daughter and her friends to sort out the collections in sets/ cups with saucers. 💙
Why did you say that?? I just took a sip of my tea and choked in it,when you said I’ll be doing this every single day for the rest of my life…(when you showed us that you started sorting everything out for the auction…)😂🤣 You’re already finding quite some treasures!😍
Paper Book Covers: I recall making paper covers, on the first day of school, when they issued us our school books. That way we could draw on the paper and customize the book jackets. The school books were re-used back then and stayed the property of the school.
How nervous little dogs start their day. Favorite Far Side. A little dog looking out the kitchen window with a cup of coffee. I had it on my fridge for years.
I loved the far side. My favorites were the ones with cows, pigs and chickens. For some reason, farm animals talking and going to the doctors just tickled me pink! You do need your garage back as winter is coming quickly. Thanks for putting yourself through this again.
I grew up in tornado alley in Texas. When I was very small a tornado like the one that hit your area hit Honda (small town then outside San Antonio). Post WWII GI housing with no basement. I received a decent swat because I snuck away to look at the tornado as it approached. It covered half the sky. My parents put myself and my little sister in the bathtub and put mattresses and their bodies over us. It jumped our house and hit the houses behind. I asked my mother where all the children were who had lived there. She told me they were in Heaven. At the time I was so young I didn’t really understand. Oddly, had I stayed in Texas after grad school, I might been a tornado chaser. Great video! Those lithographs are gorgeous.
Oh yes, I remember making book covers from brown paper grocery bags. I liked the bags that were double layered with thinner brown paper so it was louder when opening and closing the text book. 😊
Way back in the stone age, it was normal to make a paper bag cover for your school book. In fact it was like a first day of school assignment. After all, the book belonged to the school, to be returned, hopefully in decent condition, at the end of the year. Does anybody else remember going through, for example, a math book to check for and erase pencil marks? Seems like the teacher did an inspection of each returned book.
😂 “It’s actually not so bad … yeah, it’s actually pretty bad”. “Every single day for the rest of my life”. You had me laughing out loud🤣🤣🤣🤣 We know what a hard worker you are, you’ll be done in a couple days”. Loving a look thru the boxes. Thank you
When that Disneyworld bag and box with pin rises back to the top, please keep it all together in the sale. The bag and box dates the pin (from the Italy pavilion, I'd bet) to early EPCOT. There are folks who would want the bag alone, believe or not. The image used was even restyled on new merch for the recent EPCOT anniversary.
Wow, I watched this video offering with charged anticipation, carried along in the exciting flow of your activities. I love yor Utube channel Alexander. ❤️ You're a good Canadian family man! 🇨🇦🙂 Cheers from Parksville B.C.
We used to put paper covers on books like that when I was at school. You could buy them in different themes with all kinds of patterns and cartoon characters etc. We borrowed all our textbooks etc from the school and they wanted the books to last for a while so the covers would protect them 🙂
We used to use wallpaper to cover our school books, but when I was 15 I had the genius idea of using my old Jackie magazines and cutting out cartoons and pictures of my pop idols then covering it with transparent film. Before I knew it all my friends were copying me. It put me off the idea as I wanted to be different.
It would be my dream to go through all those boxes and discover treasures. On the other hand I wouldn't know how to deal with all this stuff. I don't have any connections to buy the stuff, nor any storage place. I'm so glad to be able to watch you unboxing so may boxes and showing us all the things you discover. And explaining to us their history and what you are going to do with it. I can learn so much. Thank you for all the information, the entertainment and good luck with the sales! You deserve a very good deal! Greetings from Germany. 🙋🏼♀️
Glad you are home again doing the sorting. The environment is clean and comfortable and the discoveries are more pleasurable. You can breathe easy! That in itself will make the mountain disappear quickly. And of course, your fans are enjoying the show!
Thank you, I enjoyed this so much, you're a person that follows through on what they say and you make it happen,I have such respect for the amazing Father and Husband you are, adore your wife and the perfect Soulmates you are together.
You might do well to consign some of the soapstone carvings (eg. The Timothy Appatok) to a specialty auction house. Check what Appatok's carvings go for!
Sadly I am watching this 5 months after the fact. There are so many things that I remember from my childhood and I may have even bid on them. I will say it also gives me a lesson on how to breakdown a huge collection and get it ready for sale. Thank you for entertaining us and also for teaching me how to tackle a huge job.
Sorry about my earlier suggestion of a GoPro. Should have known you would have already tried that. I’m amazed by the breadth of your knowledge of antiques and collectibles. Keep unboxing and I’ll keep avidly watching.
You are so knowledgeable on so many things; you are the right person for this task. I am learning so much because I google whatever you unbox that I don't know about. I never knew what soapstone was even though my mom had carved a small "The Thinker" out of soapstone about 80 years ago. It's fascinating to see all these treasures.😊
I can help with the sauce pronunciation! The town of Worcester is pronounced “Wooster”, rhymes with “rooster”, and the “shire” at the end of a word is pronounced “shur”, almost like “sure”. So the sauce is “Wooster-shur”….so much easier than I tried to make it most of my life!
There were some great finds ; let`s hope that continues as you go through the boxes. It`s amazing how many treasures are turning up, and I can`t wait to see what was in the safe! Imagine how much money those people must`ve spent!
Sold it immediately upon clearing out the hoard. My friend Alexander Archibald you were taken to the cleaners. You should have charged them 20K instead of the other way around. I guess the Predator was too much to resist. That and the thrill of the hunt. God Bless Us All
Hello from Winnipeg! I am the same age as you and remember visiting my uncle in Edmonton a couple of weeks after that tornado. I remember seeing all of the destruction that it left behind. Needless to say it scared the heck out of me.
I love Gary Larsen’s sense of humour. Love to watch this “reward” portion of your posts Alex. You (and we) get to see what you’ve got in those boxes which hopefully, in addition to all the furniture, will get you all of that money back! Best wishes on that happening.
French ivory, isn't that Belgian Bakelite, just like the white, ivory telephone? Imagine that that truck is actually yours, and someone bought it back then, repaired it, and you bought it years later without knowing. I like this kind of thoughts, just like two people sitting in trains passing by each other without the individuals knowing, but the viewer of the movie knows. A couple of weeks ago this happened between my mom and I, the first time in my life I am certain to have experienced this in real life.
this going to be great for you and a fresh breath when this is over you'll be able to relax with family for the coming holidays I'm glad your getting that stuff out Kudos to you
Yes, the notifications do work :) The House sold? Nice. yes, just fill your garage :) I like the *Gulp* expression everytime Alex looking at the box pile :) Id just walk to it with a coffee and DIVE IT
Far Side is awesome, your kids will love it. I bought a collection of Far Side Christmas cards they’re warped. A card reading “ Not a creature was moving not even a mouse “ Santa was looking down at the mouse on the bottom of his boot. I have a couple books , still funny.
He said in his live video a couple days ago that he would be doing a separate video on just the safes, he did indicate that there was definitely something of great interest in them ... hence they get their own video :)
Ya know Alex, It might be to your benefit to build a cute shed with a loading dock for your yard, just to do this type of thing in. You are definitely focused enough to not let it go crazy, but it would be nice to have a place to load and unload boxes. Maybe with a table and elevated rolling ramp, to move them towards the dock, where your truck is waiting. I think you may have a few of these houses in your future??? I’m so happy for you and your family to be doing what you love. 🤟🏼🤍
The problem is, as soon as you have a designated place for it, it can stay there for longer, cause it doesn't disturb you. I bet that is, what Alex tries to avoid by doing it in his garage, so he has the pressure to get it sorted and auctioned off as soon as possible to get his garage back 😉
When I was at school in the Sixties you had to put a cover on each notebook we received. You were in big trouble if you did not make that in time! Of course we had to do that with our books as well. Those books were the property of the school and you had to return them after finishing the year.
Keep up the good work Alex. Some of the items you are finding are very interesting. Treasures in their own right. A job like that can get pretty boring but the discoveries will keep your interest fresh. Plus the goal. PROFIT!
Ahh the far side comics... takes me back! I used to get the desk calendars. One of my favourites was Moses standing in front of the bathroom mirror, arms outstretched, parting his hair - still kills me 😆💀
What you’re calling a little girls dress, could it be a dressing gown for maternity. Mother needs to cover while in the hospital. Just based off the pamphlet in the box. It might be something that Swishy fashion would like.
Love the Far Side books.Tantar the elephant comes to mind. Your videos make me smile. You have a wonderful sense of humour. Thank you for the videos its always an adventure!!!!
The amoeba comics were some of my favorites, lol! I had all the UFO ones cut out and stuck inside my locker in high school. The best comic was Calvin & Hobbes, though.
the Dion girls were born in North Bay Ontario and their birth home is still here in North Bay . Their home is now a museum at the lake front. They maybe interested in that picture. One sister is still alive.
18:59 Not catalin Alex, celluloid. Jadite glass shade. I'd get it sold soonest, so if the effin' celluloid gets "celluloid disease" and falls apart, it won't fall apart before you sell it. It goes bad at random.
I woke up so sick this morning and seeing this really perked me up and warmed my heart. So calming watching Alex sort through things and hearing his voice is familiar and reassuring. Dad voice? 😆 Idk.
Could just run a live over your shoulder or time lapse over some of your sorting. You don’t even need to talk. Would love to just see things just appear and disappear into a box and go off to auction. Just put it on a tripod and see what happens. Try it once and see how it goes
We had a pair of swag lamps in our house when we bought it, similar glass, but longer. Threw them out in the trash when we replaced them with something newer.
Your butchery of English tickled me. I hadn't heard of those sisters; I wonder if they were very famous outside of North America? Amazing what interesting tales I learn about while watching you rummage through stuff.
They were popular even in the USA. My grandma had a couple of pictures of them. They were a miracle back then. You just don't hear much about 5 babies being born and all were alive. Unlike today with lab grown kids.
Gary Larson graduated from my high school. He was well before my time, but several of my teachers would bemoan the fact that they would send him to detention for doodling on the desks. He would be assigned to clean the desks off during detention. That's interesting.
@@patim5953 Also shows the ridiculousness of disciplinarianism.
That’s such a great story!
🤣🤣🤣🤣Great Story.
Oh, wow, thank you for sharing!
Edit: You should put this on his Wikipedia page!
If you make sorting videos every day in November, I will watch them every day! I am here for it!
So will i!
Me three!
Fourth 😆
I'll give that a 5th! 😁
6th here!!! 😅
Suggestion: set up a couple of tables and put the dishes and cups in front. Pay your daughter and her friends to sort out the collections in sets/ cups with saucers. 💙
I would display the amethyst quartz in one of the niches on the stairs, it is beautiful
Even without the “metal vein”, that Amethyst crystal is a very nice piece!
We grew up reading The Far Side comics. Our favorite was the kid pushing on the pull door at "Midvale - School for the Gifted" 🤣
Literally used that comment about my failed exit from a store today
@@SewGurl58 My favorite also!
My husband was a teacher for Gifted and Talented kids. He has that cartoon in a T-shirt. One of his favorites!
My former husband loved far side comics, and I think we had that exact book! How cool!
We get a “Far Side” calendar every year.🤗
I wouldn't worry about the pile taking too long. You have an endless amount of unboxing videos that people will definitely watch. Score!
Why did you say that?? I just took a sip of my tea and choked in it,when you said I’ll be doing this every single day for the rest of my life…(when you showed us that you started sorting everything out for the auction…)😂🤣
You’re already finding quite some treasures!😍
If he did that every day for the rest of his life and made a video of it every day, I would watch it every day! :D
I too laughed out loud by myself when he said that. Alex is quite the comic.
I had a good chuckle too!!!!
First the Ambulance.. then the Shop.. and now goodbye to Hans .. in the intro
I noticed that, too. Hope there wasn’t a falling out. Bring that rascal back!
Paper Book Covers: I recall making paper covers, on the first day of school, when they issued us our school books. That way we could draw on the paper and customize the book jackets. The school books were re-used back then and stayed the property of the school.

Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.
Just wanted to comment on the paper covering the books back when we were in school we covered our books with brown paper bags
Hooray! I’m waiting for these episodes like the old Dallas series in the 70’s and 80’s😂!
Then it turns out it was all a dream!
I loved the far side. My favorites were the ones with cows, pigs and chickens. For some reason, farm animals talking and going to the doctors just tickled me pink! You do need your garage back as winter is coming quickly. Thanks for putting yourself through this again.
The green lamp is amazing. It looks like your pile is growing the more you dig through boxes. Can’t wait to see what else you have!🎉
The shade looks like uranium glass.
I bet that shade glows under a black light!🤗
I thought that too
@@eloisebates7827 That's what I was thinking!
I was just thinking jadite but I'm no expert. I do collect it tho.
I admire how you break your projects down to items per day. Good way to manage this project and not get overwhelmed. You're the Master!
And here we thought you built a garage! Who knew it was a warehouse?!
I'm from Worcestershire & we say 'Wuss ter sha' But I love the way Alex says it 😁

If you think we wouldn’t be interested in watching the big china pattern sort, you’re wrong…😁
Oh yes, I remember making book covers from brown paper grocery bags. I liked the bags that were double layered with thinner brown paper so it was louder when opening and closing the text book. 😊
Your capacity to work with discipline over extended periods is awe inspiring. Chomp chomp.
Time spent sorting.... is $ earned. 🙂 That thought keeps resellers motivated.

The Alice in Wonderland book is Edwardian , circa 1911 ! And, Timothy Apatok was a carver known in the 30's. But, you have researched this by now :)
It's great that you have the room to sort things at your home.
That's why he designed it to be so large
That and so the cars could still be inside while he piddles around with the old cars he finds. 😉🤷♀️
Ahhh yes, swag lamps. Back in the 70s, even the lamps were swingers. 😆
Catelin and Jadite lamp looks like a marriage to me.....perhaps.
couldn’t help laughing when you said you were going to be sorting for the rest of your life! it must feel like that but you will manage ❤🏴

So much AWESOME vintage treasures 🤑 💰 😍 ♥️
The Dionne Quintuplets! Wow... Their story is so sad. Fascinating, but incredibly sad.

Well this is going to be fun ! Thanks Alex for the video, first of many I hope !!
Oh good Lord I grew up with a swag lamp in my bathroom. I can’t believe they are coming back.
At least you have the space to put everything until sorted.
One of me and my dad’s favorite comics to read together was The Far Side!
I've read the far side like FOREVER! I'm 63! And still like to read them.
Did anyone else see the blank check in the box of 45's?
💯
yep!
I don’t envy you this task its mammoth but hope the auctions go well for you can’t wait to see the safe openings
