People seem to struggle against the side stance in MMA. It’s probably because they train against more square almost Thai stance fighters in training and matches. So when someone won’t stand and trade with them they don’t know how to close the gap.

That spinning kick by the black gloves guy at 3:22 does't look like a Muay Thai kick. As far as I know, Muay Thai doesn't have spinning kicks.

this is a great example of what we’re looking for from kung fu as evidence. Not only is this guy clearly effective, he hasn’t turned into a generic kickboxer. What he’s doing is extremely unique to TKD (so unique that you can’t even claim it’s karate). You’re not going to find a bunch of tornado kicks and double roundhouses and spinning back kicks from the K1 crowd. It’s not enough to just wear a gi or a Shaolin robe and declare yourself as an exemplar of Style X, you actually have to use the style effectively. Contrary to popular belief, not everything is just kickboxing.

Yeah, i do slightly disagree in your last statement tho.
Of course these arts (Taekwondo, Karate and many Kung fu styles for example) are not just kickboxing and they shouldn't look like it.
But one has to remember that some styles look like they do because they are the best (or close to be the best) for their respective ruleset.
I wouldn't use a lot of Wing Chun techniques or it's stance under bocing ruleset, not because Wing Chun is a bad art but because Boxers fighting in a different way for a reason!!
So, my point is that using Karate, Taekwondo or most arts that involve punching and kicking, under a kickboxing ruleset, could look very, very similar.
Traditional Karate stances (and therefore, Taekwondo ones) weren't meant for a kickboxing rulesets. They were meant for an enviroment were weapons and grappling are allowed, that's why i wouldn't use them in a kickboxing fight even if i was a Karateka.
Same things happens to using a Muay Thai stance for Boxing, or a Wing Chun set of moves for a Capoeira roda hahahaha
So, these arts are definitely not Kickboxing (karate and taekwondo were kinda turned into kickboxing, but they originally weren't) but it is fine if they look like it a lot when under certain rulesets

@jestfullgremblim8002 The Kickboxing ruleset doesn't limit you too much, especially Thai rules.. Karate and Taekwondo people fight like they fight in the tournaments, no reason for not using those styles in Kickboxing

    • @dsrguru
      @dsrguru Год назад +2

@@jestfullgremblim8002I think the main point is that rulesets inform how people train. If a judoka mainly trains for kousen rules, the skills they cultivate will be much more like those of a BJJ practitioner than of an Olympic judoka. If you have them fight in rules that discourage staying on the ground, they're going to try to adapt (e.g. not pull guard) but that doesn't mean they'll have the standup skills to win in that format. OTOH, if the art's core training methods give someone skills that do carry over for a different ruleset, e.g. if a tai chi master uses MMA forms in a cage match but has magically good takedown and strike defense from years of standing post, silk reeling, push hands, etc., then I'd definitely count that as a win for tai chi.

What I'm getting from this is that you just have to be really really good to make TKD work well in a cage. This guy's kick speed, accuracy, and volume were insane. Though it certainly helped that he was taller and his opponent had the worst strategy imaginable, or perhaps no strategy at all.

As a taekwondo red belt i disagree. If you want to learn how to tick go do taekwondo. Your kicking technique will get very good very fast. I think as a taekwondo guy you should concern the opponent with your kicks and than surprise him with your boxing (if you can box). He will focus mainly on the kicks like turning side kick or a spinning hook kick. You also have to test you kicks in sparring and look how to kick and set them up.

This is completely anecdotal, so I don't blame you for taking what I say with a grain of salt. I did Tae Kwon Do for about 6 months, then I switched to (Dutch) kickboxing. I still practice(d) a lot of my Tae Kwon Do techniques after switching over and despite not getting past yellow belt, my TKD techniques are pretty effective. It's actually funny, because people always point out that I do TKD when we do pads despite me training in Kickboxing now for about 5 years.

A big thing he’s doing is actually resetting to his stance to prepare for strikes. Most TKD guys in this kind of atmosphere wouldn’t be resetting to a stance and readying themselves to defend against strikes and infighting with a proper guard, head positioning and movement, and footwork. He understands all of the weapons he needs to deal with, and while he may not be a professional, the awareness is there. He has adapted it for the environment he intends to use it in, while keeping it distinct.

Yes, MT guy needed to be inside, but might have been trying to avoid getting a bad kick with a kick while pushing in. He would have had a better fight up close, eliminating most of the opportunities for TKD.
This is one reason TKD kicks should be coupled with heavy training on up close fighting, and it would be a tough combo to beat. Old school TKD used elbows, knees, and hand strikes as well. But still has more training on the kicks. So, take the TKD stuff and couple it with MT and boxing or kickboxing.
This video here is a good example of how TKD kicks should be part of every MMA fighter's arsenal. I see too many commenters saying "TKD doesn't work", when that's not exactly correct. It just needs to be used correctly, and mixed with other stuff. Keep the good stuff, eliminate the vulnerabilities.
Now, I was kind of expecting to see some super fast spinning back kicks or spinning hook/heel kicks, which are among TKD's more effective kicks in sanctioned fights, actually landing. Saw one miss. Will have to check again, maybe there were more that I missed. But those should be part of any complete toolkit. The trick there is to be lighting quick with them, and don't get your leg grabbed by a guy that can do a submission on your knee or something. Also, one last thing to be aware of when fighting like what was in this video... you have to have stamina or you'll gas.
    Good job, TKD guy.

Particularly i will say all that jumping and fancy kicks seem to drain lots of energy against better conditioned fighters who really, the only thing they need to do is stand back and and let the TKD fighters wear themselves out.
That being said, thus particular fighter looks like he caught on to that and he looks like hes in really good shape. Ive only made it to 2:00 so far but he looks fine. Joe Rogan would be real proud.

Reach can be an advantage, but it's not always the deciding factor. Reach can be used against you by a person who can control distance, especially when kicking. As a tall TKD competitor of 20 years, I have to be careful to manage my distance and I spent a lot of time working on breaking out of close range exchanges in order to combat this. Black gloves needed to step in during the round techniques that use the outside lanes, and use the center lane with his punches and teep if he wanted to be more effective here.

Question for the experts as most of my "knowledge" is just from watching UFC/MMA. But guys that have Karate as a base seem to have had more success than TKD guys. What I notice is they seem to manage distance better and seem to get in and out better when they start striking. GSP, Wonderboy, and Machida being examples.
TKD guys when they commit seem to throw multiple kicks and kind of over-commit, which opens them up to more counters or worse takedowns. I noticed this with Yair Rodriguez esp in his fight last night again Volk.
Is this something just inherent in the respective martial arts, or is it the way these guys utilize them?

Part of it is that in the most popular taekwondo rule format (WT), punches are really unimportant. Worth few points, hard to land without getting scored on, and oftentimes aren't scored at all by judges. Also, punches to the head aren't allowed.
Overall in kickboxing and MMA, punches are more important than kicks. So lacking punches in high level competition results in TKD athletes having a harder time transitioning into rulesets where punches are more important.
Almost every form of point karate involves a lot of punches to the head. Kyokushin does not, but it's fought bareknuckle, and fights are won via knockdown and not via a points scoring system. Hence, why karateka generally have a better time transitioning that TKD players.
The other main format of TKD fighting, ITF, actually produces more quality kickboxers. Ironically, WT is full contact and KO is a legit path to victory, whereas in ITF it's all light contact. But ITF allows punches to the face, and punches are important in the format.
Last thing, and this is speculation on my part but: competitive TKD is a much bigger scene worldwide than competitive karate. So it may be easier for top TKD practitioners to find satisfying careers solely within TKD, whereas top karateka find fewer such opportunities within their sport alone, driving a larger number of high quality karate talent into kickboxing, muay thai, and MMA. (As a side note I think that's one factor in the prominence of wrestlers, especially in 2000s era MMA. There's nowhere for world-class folkstyle, Greco, and freestyle wrestlers to go but MMA if they want to professionally compete in real fights, so that's what a ton of them do.)

tbh, this looks like a huge mismatch in terms of actual fighting skill, regardless of style. Would be interesting to see how this would play out against a grappler though will all that airtime on the kicks.

not well, but I’m not sure much different than with any pure grappler vs. pure striker matchup

@@elenchus thats true, I think in most pure grappler vs striker matchups, the advantage is to the grappler for sure. Just would be curious to see how some of these more "airborne" switch kicks would come into play under MMA rules, with the threat of the takedown and ground/pound.

@@cpa314 I think that the addition of grappling and more importantly submission fighting (lots of striking competitions allow takedowns, but just getting taken down and being allowed to stand back up by a ref is a very different story than the fight getting moved to the ground) makes strikers more risk adverse. Flashy moves, which are usually kicks, from jump kicks to spinning kicks and even to basic high kicks start to get reevaluated in a risk-reward perspective. Even the presence of blood or sweat on the floor could make a kicker slip and fall, which is relatively unlikely for, say, a boxer. It’s a bit of a side note, but people who like these high-risk kicks for self-defense should also consider the possibility of fighting in the rain or possibly ice or snow, or in slippery footwear (dress shoes), which can pretty dramatically change what they’re capable of.
But there is a sort of inverse to this. If you’re sufficiently dangerous on the ground, than you don’t actually have to fear takedowns or just falling down. Fighters, we’ve seen, will just let you stand back up in those scenarios rather than engage your guard. So, weirdly enough, the better your jiujitsu is, the more free you are as a striker.
Ryan Hall actually used to talk about that. He’s notoriously dangerous on the ground so he just started throwing crazy spinning moves because it was difficult for people to capitalize on it when he screwed up. He eventually spammed the Iminari roll too much even for him and got punished for it, but that goes more to, I think, predictability than it does jiujitsu + kicking.

Typical Taekwondo : kick as much as you can & forget about power, if you land often enough your opponent will eventually fold up

Tkd guys has ful contact experience.
You do the extended fist in order to measure the other guy would be in kicking range.
Do not let a tkd guy do his thing. The kicks will hurt and it is fast. Based on a documentary the switch kick has the highest kicking force and it is also the fastest.
You can see the other guy's fear because his forearms hurt.
If he wanted to deal with a tkd guy, fake him, then get in and knee or punch hard into the sternum
Also there's the old solution of kick the legs
