  • There are so many iconic JDM cars from the 90's. It was the heyday of sports cars for every major Japanese auto manufacturer. One car that seems to get less love than the rest is the Z32 300zx. This specific model is a Turbo version from 1991, however they were produced from 1990 to 1996. Today we find out if the Z32 is good enough to be talked about with the best of the rest of iconic 90's JDM cars.

Good video except that facts are wrong. The z not only out sold it's competitors, it won more championships. They delayed the Supra just so they could make sure they had a car to really compete with the z. Motor week gave it the best sports car award every year it was sold in the United States. Hands down the 300zx is still the best amongst the rest.

Hit the nail on the head Kerby. Love this quote from Automobile magazine in the early 90's:
"The 300ZX has strong competition these days, notably from the sharp-edged Mazda RX-7 and the supernaturally fast Toyota Supra Turbo. But only the 300ZX always makes us feel as if we where a better driver than Danny Sullivan - and twice as pretty." -- Automobile Magazine

I'd agree that it's the best well rounded for sure. Unfortunately it's not all that quick in a straight line when stock, but it'd far from slow also.
The Mk4 Supra trapped 108-109mph depending on year/condition in the quarter mile and was definitely the fastest one in the US.
The 1994-1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 did 0-60 in 4.8-5.0 and the quarter in 13.2-13.6@101-105mph depending on year/conditions. Though heavy and not as engaging to drive as the Z, it's definitely the faster car stock.
I witnessed a race between a 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo "slicktop" and a 1998 3000GT VR-4, they went from 0-150 on a backroad. It was a very long straight road, I was in the Z. The Mitsubishi immediately pulled 3 car lengths from a dead stop. Around 120mph the Z had gained a car length and a half but was still more than a car length in front of us. It stayed that way until the Z hit its limiter with the VR-4 having a car length or more on the Z. Says more about the Z imo considering it has less power/torque, no AWD launch, and a 5 speed.

I think this car is legendary - it's styling, sound and handling were amazing. In bone stock form, the 300ZX TT isn't as fast as the '94-'99 Mitsubishi 3000T VR-4 or Supra TT, but it doesn't matter when it easily wins overall best. It takes parts from each of the 4 and combined it into something we will never see again.

@TwinTurbo Ray I think they're different cars, the 3KGT is faster on paper, in dig races from 0-top speed (the Z was limited to 155mph in the US) as well. I'm talking about the second gen models in the US and GTO MR's from Japan. Links are provided below, the commentary is NOT mine nor is it my opinion.
      *Japan*
Best Motoring is a famous Japanese television show that’s focuses on Japanese performance cars. They’re drivers are actual race car drivers that have WON AWARDS They tested all the performance cars of the era. In 1994 Mitsubishis 3000GT VR4 beat the R32 Skyline GTR a car that weighs 3100 lbs and dynos 270@whp ruclips.net/video/fwps3TVcJMM/видео.html ! And then in 1996, the GTO MR, which is identical to the 2G VR4, with 67 less pounds, bested an R33 Skyline GTR pulling a 12.8 quarter mile ruclips.net/video/ukVsqR66ldE/видео.html The 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo got 14.1 to the 1/4m for a TT 2+0 Slicktop, the lightest year ruclips.net/video/EWd70mdVfao/видео.html
The Skyline GTR was the fastest model Nissan made, their Halo car. The J spec VR4 is identical to the USDM version, how would it lose to a 300ZX Twin Turbo which is a much less powerful and heavier car than the Skyline GTRs above? These videos alone prove how much faster the VR4 is

3000GT VR4 0 - 60 in 4.9 and the quarter mile in 13.5@103mph. MW couldn't get the Z faster than 13.7@103, so the VR4 is 3 to 4 car lengths ahead at the same trap speed

      300ZX Twin Turbo - 13.9@102.0mph
      3000GT VR4 - 13.5@101.6 mph
The Z is 4-6 car lengths away and moving .4s mph faster - it physically cannot pass up that much ET difference.

Stock 1999 3000GT VR4 quarter mile of 13.2@102.7 This is a thoroughly stock car. It took him over a month to get the launch down.
      5. www.motortrend.com/news/mitsubishi-3000gt-vr4/ -
The launch was bad for both the Supra TT and VR4, yet the VR4 did 0-60 in 4.8s and tied the Supra TT in the 1/4m @ 13.6s, with the Supra trapping substantially higher (Obviously).

      1999 3000GT VR-4 - 0 to 60 in 5.00s, 1/4m in 13.44s @ 101.79mph
They could have had a better launch, but who cares, no 300ZX Twin Turbo is pulling a 13.4 ET without bolt ons and definitely slick rubber.
      7. Seems the Z32 isn't all it's shaped up to be, it lost to a 250HP Corvette by a SECOND around a track and ran identical numbers. QUOTE: When all was said and done, the Cor¬vette turned laps in the one-minute 38-second range, at an average speed of 64 mph, while the Nissan was almost a second per lap slower. "No big deal," you're saying? On the contrary. It is a big deal in a two-hour race. Far more important, the Corvette-with its hip-hugging seats, smooth power delivery, and neutral handling-is far easier to drive for long peri¬ods at those speeds. To put the Cor¬vette's racetrack prowess into per¬spective, remember that the big V-8 produces 50 fewer horsepower than the twin-turbo terror (LOL) www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison-test/a15112003/1991-chevrolet-corvette-z51-fx3-vs-nissan-300zx-archived-comparison-test/ www.300zx.cl/ga2/300zx/images/cvsg4.jpg - 300ZX Twin Turbo - 0 to 60mph 5.6, 0 to 100mph 16.3, quarter mile in 14.6@96mph

I owned both, so I guess I'm a double fanboy?
The 3000GT was a vastly different vehicle. The first gens were packed with tech and weight and still ran similar times as the Z and FD3. I'm not a huge fan of this gen, but some people love them.
After 1994 (second gen) when it got a 6 speed and less weight/more HP&TQ it out accelerated the Z TT and the RX7 TT easily. Even in the US where they couldn't launch it correctly testers got 60mph in 4.8-5.1s and the quarter mile in 13.4-13.6@101-105mph. In Japan the GTO MR, a model that weighed just 67lbs less, beat the R32 Skyline GTR over a mile and ran a 400m of 12.888 beating out the R33 GTR. The R33 V spec beat the GTO, but for awhile the GTO TT and Skyline GTR were the fastest production cars in Japan.
Owners have gotten as low as 13.2@102.7mph for stock cars - ruclips.net/video/vFEYkgOZdC4/видео.html - mine was a stock 1997 VR4 with just a KN drop in and I was able to run 13.3-13.5@101-103mph reliably. With better clutch abuse I probably could have hit 13.2 ET.

The 3000GT VR4 did not translate well to the US market imo - even though, surprisingly, the 3000GT platform sold more that all of its competition - and testers put it up against true sports cars like the FD3 and Z32 TT. Although it was faster than those two, it couldn't handle nearly as well, didn't sound as good, and was generally more bland to drive than those two.
The VR4 is truly a GT car, meant to be driven at high speeds in all weather conditions.
It should have been marketed against the Porsche 928, BMW 8 series, MB S/CL/CLK coupes, etc.
The Z32 is one of my all time favorite platforms. I don't think we need to go over why, but I'm going to anyways. It was the best looking, best balanced, and imo handles the best - I found the FD3 to be a bit squirrelly. Stock they're fast enough to hit high 13s, but minor mods change the whole car. The VG is not only beautiful but also takes well to mods.
I miss my Z more. I really want a 2+2 TT. But the VR4 was a misunderstood car. I liked it a lot, especially the acceleration, but it lacked personality.

The Z32 is an icon. It alone started the trend of high end Japanese performance vehicles. It's looks are timeless.
The driving experience is pretty damn good. It's great in corners, HICAS actually does make a difference, the twins have a nice little linear push when you get on the throttle. Great point and squirt car, and can be nodded for the strip or a road course. Does 0-60 in 5.2-5.6 and the quarter mile in 13.7-14.0@99-104mph which isn't blistering but still enough shove to have fun in a straight line.
Compared to the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and Toyota Supra Twin Turbo the Z32 was a tad slower in a straight line. The Mitsubishi does 0-60 in 4.8-5.0s and the quarter mile in 13.2-13.5@101-105mph and the Toyota does 60 in 5.0-5.2 and the quarter in 13.5-13.7@105-109mph. The Mazda FD3 RX-7 was a rare car, but it ran about the same times as the Z32 with less of top end.

This vid is from 3 years ago. Not sure how many look at it these days. I would gather the bulk of the people looking at this vid are present, current or hopeful future owners. I have a 90 2+2 which is now a swapped out tt with stick. For info purpose only, I purchased this car off lease from a police officer. I know this because I pulled the glove box out 6 months after owning it and found a old insurance card. Looked in the phone book and found him. Called him and found out that my car was "babied". Pearl white with Tan gut. I love the tweed. 30 years later, I can tell you some more "FACTS" as to why people think this car is not as "respected" as others.
I purchased the car from a dealer. I negotiated till they gave up. We settled on the car price and new tires. They asked if I wanted a sales job at their dealership. I said no. 3 weeks later I was laid off from a union job in NYC. I called and for the next 7 years I was their manager of finance and sales. It was a mall and I took Toyota as my store. We had Nissan, Toyota, GM.
I loved this car. Why? because it looked like the nicest, meanest, beautiful(you can fill in the rest________) I ever saw. And it was cheaper. A win win. Numbers matter. For z32 production run for US. 82,912, That number is not exact as demo's and corp cars, and every corporate and manager took one, messed with this number. It is close. For Supra 13000 with the same demo and corp car issue.
Why the difference? Money. Supra was way more in cash terms. I had 5 on the lot and I could not get rid of. 3 Anthrosite Brown, I red and 1 Black. I would not give up the black for a dealer swap unless I got a black in return. I did and it was TT that had a 54k sticker. In 1994 dollars. It was nice and the looked good but nothing like the Z32. I am biased and I could have purchase a used Supra also but I wanted the Z. The factory rebates on the Supra got as high as $5000 customer money back and low (wait for it.....) for 60 months. To the dealer there was another $5000 back. That's 10k! And it got worse for the dealer. There was a limit on how long you could keep it as it just killed your floorplan. Floorplan is the interest the dealer pays the bank to hold the car. So some old school dealer talk. My store would take any offer that was NET NET of tissue and deep into the hold back and flat $500 to the salesman. We made money on the first 6 or so as the enthusiast pre orders were moved out and for the rest of them, if I could it to another dealer to swap it, it was cash or another car other than a Previa or Supra..
Now you know why this car is "undervalued". Supply and demand. And guess what? The enthusiast are back. Both cars are great. Both cars are Japanese and built to the 9's. I liked the Supra. My daily driver since 2003 is a 2001 Lexus IS-300 with of course a 2jz. Never a problem 384k with it.Yes normal maintenance done and some leaks in seals and hundreds of o2 sensors but it's my best car I ever own. Will take me to work tomorrow. My Z is the love of my car life. This is my My z. copy and paste

Am I the only one that hates most Z32 mods? To me the Z32 was almost literal perfection in stock form. Maybe a wheel-upgrade to a larger size but that’s about it for me. I just hate the typical mods you see on these iconic cars (like the cheesy A-pillar gauges, the aftermarket taillights, the over-styled body kits etc) which, granted, are all cosmetic mods, but even mechanical mods (to me) are largely unnecessary on the Z32 because the stock car was already perfectly capable as-is. I could see a brake upgrade and perhaps coil overs and a tasteful exhaust upgrade for better looks and sound (the stock tips are pretty weak and small tbh). That said, a bone-stock Z32 will still get my attention today every single time, even after 30+ years! It really is my favorite 90’s Japanese sports car, and that’s saying something considering the fact that basically EVERY 90’s Japanese sports car was iconic IMO in their own way (The 91 300ZX TT, 93 Supra Turbo, 93 RX-7, 90 Acura NSX, 94 3000GT VR4, and even the 91 MR2 Turbo). Just keep these classic icons stock IMO…

I have owned both the 300zx TT 2 + 2 manual & a 2004 Skyline 350 gt manual Track version with deadly breaks. ha-ha & fully loaded with all the bells & whistles. The 300 zx was more fun to drive with it's bigger interior & it's hatchback configuration ....... driving felt better on average roads. Personally I thought the 300zx was faster but can't vouch for that. I will admit that my Skyline was very quick to spin tires.
Suffice to say that I still miss my 300zx TT & would consider buying another one while I feel that I have had my turn with the Skyline 350 GT & don't want to own another one. ha-ha

The credits for Supra, RX7, Skylines, EVO 8 etc. came mostly with the Fast & Furious movies. Before that movies, somehow only Gran Turismo 1 (PS1) players knew all these JDM sports cars exists.

I don't see its interior as I remember, like a long extension from armrest but still a great good looking car

These seats aren't factory, so that could be why you don't recognize it.

I think you forgot how much of an impact The Fast & The Furious had on car culture. The 300zx is highly renowned as it was banned from the GT racing class it originally competed in and also won at 24hr at Le Mans!

I've not seen that these cars get any less love. I think that they were much more expensive than most of the other offerings from Japan at the time and the repairs and maintenance were out of the reach of most enthusiasts, both when new, and used. Kind of like the 944, lusted after when new, but the rumored cost of ownership just put people off of buying used. IMO, of course.

      @wingspantt 2 года назад +1

I always thought the 944 maintenance costs were overstated. Then Everyday Driver did that challenge where they bought a bunch of sub-$8k cars, all in comparable shape, and looked at costs to bring them up to completely normal condition.
The $300zx cost about $3k to bring up to normal condition. The 944 cost almost FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.

@@wingspantt I wonder how much of that $40K was just deferred maintenance and how much was correcting lousy repairs from previous owners. Interior/exterior trim and parts are much more expensive for the car from Stuttgart.

I'm confused. The Z32 has always gotten a ton of love. The problem is what a pain in the ass they are to work on.

you can tell you were too young to know this car new. It was NOT underappreciated, it was considered better looking than the Supra, and the RX7 was considered the "bare bones" model compared to the Supra and Z32. The Supra was considered a slightly better performer if you didn't mind the lumpy look. The 3000GT and Stealth did not get the respect back then (for whatever reason).

I never knew a single person that had a Skyline, and only 1 that had a Supra. Maybe it's just what area you're in. The 300ZX wasn't exactly common, but many more of them than the Supra. I didn't even think the Skyline was legal in those days, or in the USA?? It was the Nissan 300ZX and the Mazda RX-7 with the inline 4 cylinder.

I don't agree that Z32 don't handle well or feel like GT cars. About the only GT thing is the excellent stock seats. The rest of the car from the steering ratio to the high stock spring rates to the short wheelbase is pure sports car.
They feel very nimble and have very quick steering, even compared to modern cars
