Excellent update Ashley! This really gives me some direction on what I want to do with my existing cabinets - many blessings to you!! Thank you for the update :)
Glad to help! ( :
Thank you for the Update Video, nice to see after 2 years on this process and product. Thank you
You're welcome!
Yay, loved the update and I'm really looking forward to seeing the new white finish.
Thanks! I'm working on the white ones as we speak! ( :
yeah I am so glad you did an update for us........ Thank you
You bet!
They look awesome! I've always loved the darker cabinets.
( : Thanks!
That's so exciting. I can't wait to see how you repaint your painted cabinets
Thanks!
Thank you for this post, it saved me so much time!
Good advice. Thanks. I have seen some people having problems going dark to light with this product
I just finished my kitchen cabinets last night.. thank you so much for your help and tips..
You're welcome! ( :
Wow I can't believe 2 years have passed since you posted that video! It inspired me to work on my kitchen's look.
Best wishes
I know right? Mila was just a couple of months old when I posted it, can't believe it! ( :
thank you for this update video. this is suoer useful in deciding if i want to use this product. I started off using a gel stain for my table and cabinets. i like the kit you used though so i still need to decide! :-)
You bet!
nice. i was a painter for over 12 years and still do side jobs now but for a more durability finish you would want to sand all wood and put at minimum of 3 coats of polyurethane still really cheap a quart is around 8 to 10 dollars
That's for sharing! ( :
King Mario RF Reviews Should you sand between coats?
For projects such as this, sometimes an oil based primer will help things adhere and stay better. You can paint non-oil based over the oil based. And, perhaps that kit included that; I haven't really read up on it. Thanks for ssharing, though!
I have had all the types of cabinets light oak, espresso and white. The white are by fare the easiest to keep clean. We are a military family and move every 3 years (I know not very green) so I get a lot of experience and find out what works and what doesn't.
Hey no worries about not being green, you've got enough other things going on ( : Thank you to your family for their service. I'm sure the frequent moving does give you a bit of everything when it comes to home decor/style. ( :
great work......love Rustoleum products
Thanks! I do love their products too. ( :
Great tips! Can't wait to see the white! You are so ambitious! =)
Ha ha thanks! Yes, I just get cabin fever in the summer when I'm off from teaching so I have to do some projects! ( :
If you go over it with a satin finish heavy use or traffic polyurethane or varathane product when you’re done painting you’ll see significantly less wear and tear because it would have a hard coating on it to prevent that. It would also be more washable.
Thanks Ashley.
You're welcome!
Good for you.
thanks I didn't think of the "after time". I was talking with a contractor friend and I said hey try painting and if you still don't like it then buy. I saw your first video which sold me on this cause I couldn't find someone I trusted to do resurfacing.i have excellent cabinets I just want them darker. going to home Depot to do research. the color espresso dark is what I want too. best to you and your new color.
Hope it can help you out! ( :
Thank you thank you 🙏
You are so welcome
I recommend an eggshell finish. Not a top coat. Touch up would be easier. Try Durapox. I admire you. That's a lot of work. My husband is the Painting Contractor and I know that isn't easy.
Interesting, thanks for sharing!
I did my cabinets in espresso a few years back too. They are looking worn. I'm going to use a gel stain on them to revibe then. Did you do apply the new countertop before or after you painted the cabinets? I am changing my counter tops also. Great video
New countertops came after I painted the cabinets ( :
Hi there, did you seal it with top coat?
Hi Ashley. Thank you for this video
Question: when u applied the top coat on the entire piece, after the touch UP's, did u just add the top coat on top of the existing?
Yes just on top of the existing. ( :
They look beautiful!! :) Did you know exactly what paint you used before so you could get the same color for touch ups or did you just eye ball it and try one? Thank you for sharing! :)
Thanks! I just kept some from the first time I did the kit that way I didn't have to try and match it at the store ( :
I used one of the Rustoleum kits on a bathroom. It scratched. I used Sherwin Williams on the rest of the bathrooms and kitchen. DID NOT SCRATCH.
Interesting...what type of paint from Sherwin Williams did you use and how did you prep the cabinets? I've always wondered about using other types of paints. ( :
used Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Smooth Enamel on the kitchen cabinets. We sanded them down, lightly, then primed them and painted. I used a fine-sponge roller. The color was an off-white, very soft color. Just didn't want that stark difference. We had black granite installed and I love it. The've been done for about 1.5 years and have held up REMARKABLY well, we did not top coat (or glaze) them at all. Our local S/W said it was not necessary. The paint is about $70 a gallon, but well worth it, IMHO. One bathroom was done in DARK brown about 6 years ago. I forget which kind of SW Paint. Prep was the same, sand, prime and paint. I also used a glaze on these. While the color was extremely dark, I didn't like the one-dimensional look. My local SW suggested I have them tint a quart of glaze. It was just dry-brushed on to create a little depth to the color. It has not chipped at all. I'm really happy with those cabinets.
I used Behr satin impervo in my kitchen 6 yrs ago and just recently had to touch it up on 2 lower doors, cleaned, primed with a tinted primer then painted them black. Great paint!
I just wanted to let you know that I used two coats of the protective top coat and I still got scratches. In the process of using an oil based clear coat now to see if that will work...fingers crossed.
Have you had trouble with your white cabinets as well? More or less than the dark? I just purchased the pure white kit, now I'm nervous!
lovely job, such a shame I can't get the kits here in the UK
Oh that's a bummer ) :
I did the exact same espresso color on my cabinets 3 years ago. They have some wear and tear as well. And I am too wanting to paint them white lol! I've wondered if you could just go over with another kit?? Looking forward to seeing how it works for you 😉
I'm going over them right now, word of caution it's taking more coats of paint to cover the dark espresso. Buy a large kit or 2 smaller ones. I thought a small kit would be enough but it's not (you'll run out of base coat with just one kit). Loving the results so far! ( :
+AshleysGreenLife perfect! Thanks for the tip! I don't have very few cabinets to do but I will keep this in mind. I can always take one back if I don't need it I guess. Can't wait to see your results!
+AshleysGreenLife hey Ashley! How did it go with painting the white over the dark brown coli? I am getting ready to do mine and just wondering how yours turned out? xoxo Cristina
I hope you show us the white!
Painting and filming it all right now! ( :
It sounds to me like this Rustoleum product isn't all it's cracked up to be. I painted my old dark kitchen cabinets white 14 years ago using Behr high gloss white paint. I made sure to properly prep by cleaning, sanding, and priming and the cabinets still look terrific. I recently did a few small touch ups, but have not seen the kind of wear and tear you seem to have had.
That's cool you found something that worked for you!
I wonder if the decorative glaze would have added protection
Good question...
It does not. The glaze goes into the grooves and offers no protection even if a thick coat is left.
Hi Ashley's Green Life! My question is how did the hinges hold up? We are thinking of doing that in our home but going deep gold for richness. But was hoping you'd have some help on how they hold up in kitchen usage. Thank you in advance!!
Unfortunately not super well. In the most commonly used spots they have worn off a bit. Not enough for someone to notice who's not specifically looking at them, but when I painted my cabinets white, I seriously considered just buying new hinges...but I ended up just sticking with the spray painted one for convenience sake. Wondering if other people have had more success with the spray paint holding up? Or if there's a protective coat I could have sprayed on them to make it last longer? Best of luck with your kitchen project!
Ashley's Green Life Thank you, so much for the quick reply and honesty! Also, good points! When you originally went to a dark kitchen, did you also do the baseboards and door frames and the doors themselves to match?
You bet! I did do the baseboards under the cabinets. When it comes to door frames and doors themselves are you referring to the ones in my house (like doors to rooms) and the trim around them? Or doors and frames on the cabinets? Just want to make sure I answer your question right. ( :
Ashley's Green Life Doors in and out of the room. I'm so glad two tone is in now, if I decide to stay with the med brown of them as they currently are. I figured your doors and baseboards around the walls would have matched the original cabinets.
Okay gotcha. Mine were all oak when we moved in (doors and trim) and I painted them all white. Before doing this project and have kept them the same. But I can see how a change in the wood darkness of the cabinets would be a little different for wood doors. ( :
can't wait to see the dark bamboo floors. we have the light color and it's so hard to get colors to go with it. They're about the same color of the light oak. They do dent very easily even thought bamboo is very hard flooring. See if the is a way to not use the method of glueing it down. I want to replace our bedroom bamboo and the cost to have some remove them because of being glued down is about 1k for 240 Sq ft.
I do plan on doing a hardwood floor video for sure. Our's were nailed down, and they are the "strand" bamboo so they are supposed to be more sturdy. We do have a few little marks already though, but so far so good. ( :
when we put ours down we glued them. I've dropped stuff on the bedroom floor and things don't break like they would tile but they sure to dent the bamboo lol. I can't wait to see your floors. I want to sand our bamboo and restain them a darker color. I had a big bedroom set before I bought this house and didn't know interior design, so my bed set is all a light color accented with dark but the floor is just too light to look good. I can't find a good wall color to compliment both. I should send you a pic and get your thoughts
Can you stain bamboo floors? I didn't know that, that's probably a way cheaper idea than replacing it all to look dark. You might just google the look you have/want. I did that tons of times this summer when working on these projects. For example, mine is dark floors + gray walls it helped me decide I wanted to paint my furniture (entertainment center and end table) white, which I'll share in a video to come. Not sure if that makes sense, but pinterest and google are my interior designer friends-lol ( :
Some bamboo floors you can. it depends on the type it is. Like yours it may be able to be stained. my kind may not. I have to have a flooring guy look at it. That's what color I want to go with, the grays. We have to redo all the stucco on our house. I'm hoping that because we are doing it ourselves we can save money and use some of the money for some interior things needed.
i have seen that a gel stain last longer than these cabinet kits
5:15 It is easier to remove the hardware than to paint around it, and the result is better too.
Of course, I just was lazy when touching it up. ( :
When cabinets are painted, there's nothing like spraying them. Prime, 2 coats of finished and clear coat.
hey is your white kitchen done yet ?when r u showing us the video?
Just posted it! ( : ruclips.net/video/svJfrtErnIE/видео.html
would an extra coat of the color give it a little more sturdiness?
I just painted them with the white paint and it took 3 coats (instead of 2) and I did 2 coats (instead of 1) of the top finishing coat so we'll see if it holds up better. ( :
Was the white paint a primer paint or just interior flat, shiny paint?
It was the same kit, just in white the second time around. ( :
Thank you! Have a great day!
maybe sanding first would have made the paint stick better??
It's possible? But the kit said it's not required. Interesting idea though...
can you please do another "vegan what i ate in a day?"
Yes it has been awhile hasn't it? ( : I'll add it to the list!
Ashley WE HAVE THE SAME DRESSER
The rustoleum cabinet kit is garbage. I painted it white but the protective coat turned it yellow. I ended up sanding this crap off and painting with an oil based paint
Oh bummer!
OMG, what a terrible terrible look after 2 years. I would hate that it looks so cheap.
you spent 75$ to destroy $2800 worth of cabinets. should have stained them. now you have no choice but to replace them or strip them. Or you could just keep a can of paint in the kitchen. thanks for the update. this hopefully will turn more people away from cheap alternatives.
Too much work to restain. You have to take the cabinets completely apart, EVERY panel within a door, the reglue or screw. AND the sanding has to be complete (a mess if you don't run or own a shop).
pretty rough after two years. I wouldn't recommend this.
Works if you don't mind touching up once a yer
Kitchen cabinets having to be retouched every year is not ideal...at all
This looks like shit. Painted cabinets are garbage. When you go on websites like houzz people lie through their teeth about how well they hold up and there is almost no maintenance. When you buy new white cabinets, good ones are usually laminate which is much more durable. But I would much rather have the supposedly "outdated" look rather then having my cabinets look like dog shit. It look like a slum from the projects. The more you touch it up the more paint gets caked on. Its gonna look even worse with layers of paint.
I'm not the one looking at makeup videos. Your face has that shit caked on so bad you can scrape it off with a shovel. Thats probably why your face looks like it got hit by a shovel. Yes I live in a 5,200 square foot 1.5 acre slum, your right.
Tony Montana sure u do bahaha it's easy to make up lies on the internet about wonderful your life and how awesome your house is haha. honestly we can see how crappy your life is by your attitude it's all good. 😁 someone is u just makes me laugh 😂
Sure u have a nice big house or a wonderful life I said I'm sureeeee u do that's me sarcastic 😂😂😂t😂 no I don't believe u or your house story and no I don't believe you have a wonderful life because if u did U wouldn't be on here bashing this girls video like this u obviously have a crappy life that's very apparent with your attitude 😁 have a nice day i gots to go to work or maybe I'll watch more make u videos 😘
I just stated the obvious. Painted cabinets are trash. Your the one that came on here and started calling me names. Now you wanna twist it around? I feel so bad for your hubby.
Tony Montana this is one of the most childish and immature comments i have seen on a youtube video in quite a long time. to each their own - some people prefer stained cabinets, others painted. sometimes, kitchens are too small for dark wood, thereby necessitating a painted finish. Also, many people aren't lucky enough to live in a 5200 square foot house, and have to make do with what they can afford. i find it very sad that a supposed adult has nothing better to do than watch/badmouth others - i also am curious why you were even watching this video in the first place if you hate painted cabinets so much?
