Etta James talked of Aretha doing this song and when it got to the part where she went above an octave said “how did that b get up that high!?” She saw Sarah Vaughan later and asked her about Aretha, Sarah said “you heard her doing Skylark?” Etta said “yeah” and Sarah said “and I’m not doing that song ever again!” 💀💀💀
Wow! My first time hearing this song by Aretha. I had to listen to it twice. I'm just speechless. One of the most * BEAUTIFUL* and most influential *God Gifted* vocals I've ever heard in my life. Thanks for sharing. Rest in Paradise Queen Aretha for you are truly missed. #GoneButNeverEver4Gotten
I'm so glad that I got the chance to see her perform in person a few years ago and I will never forget that beautiful evening with her. She had a full on orchestra behind her and she sang her heart out. Always Amazing Performances!!
Skylark Have you anything to say to me? Won't you tell me where my love can be? Is there a meadow in the mist Where someone's waiting to be kissed? Oh skylark Have you seen a valley green with spring? Where my heart can go a journeying Over the shadows and the rain To a blossom covered lane And in your lonely flight Haven't you heard the music in the night? Wonderful music Faint as a will o' the wisp Crazy as a loon Sad as a gypsy serenading the moon Oh skylark I don't know if you can find these things But my heart is riding on your wings So if you see them anywhere Won't you lead me there? Oh skylark I don't know if you can find these things But my heart is riding on your wings So if you see them anywhere Won't you lead me there?
One of the best Aretha Franklin songs that no one has ever heard of. Etta James was not being disrespectful of Aretha when she first heard this song and commented on the power of her voice at 1:56 and said "Nobody can sing like this bitch!"
Aretha has always been my favorite singer. From her Chess and Columbia days. And "Skylark" has always been one of my favorites. Along with so many more.
Hauntingly beautiful track..this was my favourite Aretha era..I loved her very early jazz ballads, and her time with Columbia records. I love songs like "I can't wait until I see my baby's face", "Losing you", "Running out of Fools" , "Mockingbird"...nobody seems to appreciate these older rare tracks..everyone is for the RESPECT which is a belting track but not my favourite. Jazz Ree IS THE BEST!!
@Live Life I agree with you wholeheartedly! I can understand the desire to make Aretha commercial so that people could make money. I regret it. I love her music catalogue from her Columbia years. “Skylark” is my favorite song. But since all of the GOOD music that black people have done is slowly becoming lost in this new era of so-called music where you don’t have to play an instrument and you don’t have to be able to sing. I pray that the majesty of her voice will live on and she will not be remembered as just the lady who sang “Respect”!
Pure facts!! People forget how versatile Aretha is and these records are proof that should is a Jazz queen! Very underrated and my favorite is also Losing you, that live performance had me in chills.
I still have the original album of the very era you are speaking of.I made a collection of Aretha and Nancy Wilson. If you get the opportunity listen to Nancy song The Days Of Wine And Roses.
I miss you so much Queen Of Soul your voice was everything to me especially growing up in Detroit and doesn't help that I never got the chance to meet you while you were still here 😩💔😭
Aretha has amazed us with that anointed voice for a long time. This is what God put her on earth for, and she has truly earned her crown of life , in heaven, where she resides now.:)
Wow I'm surprised how much I like this!! I was expecting her to be wailing... cuz most of her material is much more rock/gospel. This was wonderful and really showed off her voice as capable of being quite lovely in addition to being powerful. Thumbs up!
when Aretha hits that note at 1:58, that made Dinah and Etta say "I'm never singing this song again....it's hers now." And just for reference, I'm not making this up..this is from the David Ritz biography on Aretha - except Etta used much more colorful language...LOL
@@merkjanoosterhoff1590 Yep! In fact Aretha had a chance to sing with Sarah along with Peggy lee and Roberta flack in a birthday special for Duke Ellington.
@@merkjanoosterhoff1590 I heard a few songs on that album but I don’t think I’ve heard that, I’ll have to check it out! The girl was only about 18 or 19 when she recorded that🔥🔥🔥

Somebuddy has been reading David ritz's bio of Aretha. Yeah. Aretha is still a typical industry ho who sold her soul to have "hits".
Hard to imagine SV ever being intimidated by another singer, but Aretha was an alien!
@ Right!
Etta James? I don’t think she ever recorded this song.is there any available recordings of it online?
@ Etta never recorded Skylark. I meant Sarah Vaughan. Etta was quoting Sarah, not herself.
Aretha did some wonderful recordings at Columbia and this gem of a song is an example
Very few people create this kind of beauty in their lifetime.
What a gift to leave the world.
Divine
YOU WILL NEVER GO AWAY ARETHA FRANKLIN
You are 💯% correct about that 😊.
NEVER😄
Aretha's voice was made for
this song.
What a diamond voice a legend never die
'Diamond voice' is indeed the right description!
My Gawd, what a voice...this arrangement is everything...her vocals are epic...
Sad that radio stations only play four or five of her most popular songs and NEVER delve into her masterpieces, of which this is certainly one.
I love that statement, well said!
Her five most popular songs are masterpieces. Cope
I looooove her voice and this song
Loosing Aretha Franklin was like losing a close beloved family member...her soulful songs will be forever in my heart.
Fantastic version, no one ever sang this more beautiful than Aretha...
(there is also an alternate version with just her at the piano!)
My favorite song of Arethas. The finest singer America ever produced❤️👏❤️👏❤️
Perfectly Beautiful 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
What a note!!! I'm still mesmerized...
LOVED THIS!
WHAT A VOICE, ONCE IN A LIFETIME!

She literally could sing any style of music. R.I.P.P. Great Lady Soul.

I envy you I wished all my life to see her on stage ♥️biggest singer in the world 🌎, Aretha forever .
You overwhelm my heat And sing to my soul. Forever The Queen 🌹

Nice to know. Didn't know Etta said this.❤

@ :52 min when she sang the melody 🎵Sky-y-ylark🎶smh! It went through me! So Heavenly!
Only Aretha!
21 years old when she recorded this. My God!
Beautiful song. My first time hearing this one from Aretha.
This voice is just beautiful refreshin to ny ears an smoothes my spirit
So wonderful, so precious ❤️. So Aretha. We will always love you. Even in Heaven's peace, you still bless us.

Jazz is an underappreciated music form. I love the Great American Songbook and those who record it to this day. And, the big band/swing era too.

Beautiful song and a beautiful voice!...almost magical...... I grew up listening to this music...none other like it!

She definitely sings this song most beautifully! Incomparable.
Anointed voice above all others right here
AMAZING.
Very very Good one of Her Best!!!!!!
🧡 this version of Skylark and how she made it her own!
She was not even 20 yrs old when she recorded this song. Magnificent voice, magnificent songstress.
Actually she was 21.
Aretha was 21 at the time of recording Skylark.
One of my favorites! Again Aretha at her very best!!!! She has another version of this song not quite this captivating…
Beautiful❤

This Carmichael classic never sounded better. Alongside Saunders' 'If i lose', i think are two of the lesser known gems of Franklin's work.
Aretha, your voice is only only only one .
My all time favorite along with her singing
🎤IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU.What a gem.RIH💐 Aretha Franklin
This voice is not of this planet.
A truly great singer/song. It doesn't get any better than this. Sublime. John Sivorn UK
Beautiful
SWEET

Mother music the 👑🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I just never understood the struggle she had with Columbia in those years, she sang those songs beautfly
Unfortunately, it has more to do with marketing than talent.
Happy Birthday to Hoagy Carmichael his Birth Card is Jack of Hearts 💕 Merry Christmas ⛄🎄 Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
It was always an event when I happened upon this record on the radio. Where ever, I paused to disappear into the mist. PWG
Unsurpassed.

Therapeutic music
It surely is. Resting peacefully amidst skylarks singing in the meadows.
When did this song originally come out?
1963, from her Colombia album "Laughing on the Outside" (a gem!)
@@merkjanoosterhoff1590 thank you
@@JukeboxJoeB l suggest you should listen to her "All night long" , from her first Colombia album!
Haunting very Haunting!
This might actually be better than Ella's version. (If such a thing were possible!)
This version caused the great Sarah Vaughan to stop singing it!!!
That's what Sarah told Etta James!
