      I agree 100%. Remember, though, that the guy in this song is a loser. "...some day he'd be a star (a superstar, but he didn't get far)" Dude couldn't even drive back because he had to sell his car, hence the train. If this song was autobiographical, what a loss it would have been for all of us.
      That being said, I LOVE this song.

    My dad said that this was his moms song, and she would always play it. So whenever my dad listens to this song it always brings a tear to his eye. I never got to meet her because she died when she was 50, before I was born. But whenever I play this song, I can always feel a presence that comes into the room. I wish I met you Grandma Betty ❤

    My grandpa, who raised my siblings and I, passed away to this song as he was being taken off of life support due to complications from esophageal cancer. This was one of his favorite songs, and it is one of mine now. I’m forever grateful for him and I’ll always remember and cherish the music he showed me growing up.

    My dad loved Gladys Knight & the Pips when I was growing up, we played this at his funeral then afterwards we went for food and the same track started playing as we all sat down, pure coincidence but I'm taking it as a sign. A beautiful sign.

      I’m 21, and I grew up listening to old school, and it brings back so many nice memories with my Aunt that passed back in 2016. It’s sentimental, wayyy better than the music being made now, and just so artistic in the sense you can feel the emotion more so in my opinion, in this sort of music. It’s captured in an authentic and stunning way you can’t help but you smile and listen

      I'm 26 and feel like I was born in the wrong era. I love motown and soul music like Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, etc. You don't find that kind of soulful songs these days it's rare.

      It does but it's no longer about the words, it's about depth. I mean rap was basically people talking to the beat.
      But now we have rappers talking about their pain or trying to push genres to their limits.
      If you need some music to check out I suggest: Thundercat, Denzel Curry, Break bot as some starters.

      Well thats one of the reasons it's called soul music...just listen to modern soul music...but its still gonna be hard to match the Empress of Soul.
      For me the duet of Alicia Keys and John Mayer had soooo much emotion in it...John Mayer sings with such emotion, but its Alicia who kills it in that duet

    A song that holds a very special place in my heart. When I was a kid and me and my dad would go on long drives together, we would always sing this song together. Me singing gladys knight and my dad singing the pips. He passed away 2 weeks ago and it now makes me cry to hear this song but it will always be a special memory to me 💖

    I Remember it playing on the radio. My mother wd listen to music when she was cleaning..saturdays. She stopped with broom in her hand and sent me to go buy this record..they were called 45"s .cost $1:00..anybody else remember the 45's records

    I used to love watching the various groups perform on the Ed Sullivan show. Gladys Knight and the Pips were one of my favorites.
    As an adult, I would have dance parties in my living room with my besties. This was ALWAYS one of songs we'd re-enact. I was always The Pips. I know every lyric.

    WoooWooooo! This is on my playlist for work (at a small liquor store). We have speakers outside too and when this song is playing, EVERYONE comes dancing across the parking lot and dance in the store! Happy people and great music make the world go round ❤
