And 50 years later Free Bird is still the Rock Anthem gold standard!
R I P Gary Rossington…the band is back together.
Heaven's rockin right now! The greatest band that ever lived. Ronnie's songs are the soundtrack of my life, then and now.
~ Lesa on my husband's account
I can only imagine how awesome that reunion was.
God bless em all
The triple threat of guitars-Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Stevie Gaines. RIP to some bad ass southern rock legends!
he was so talented... but after that crash.... he was messed up. physically and mentally. I was 13 when this concert took place... I never got to see them. My Uncle got me a tee shirt from one of there last concerts.... I was at a party and someone stole it out of my bag.
Amen 🙌
Please don't forget the guitar contributions from bassist Leon Wilkeson. That 30-second passage near the end of this song he's practically breaking his fingers on those cables (heavier bass strings) during the speed-up of the tempo.
@@artbagley1406 he was definitely holding his own! Everyone was hitting on all cylinders that day and we got it on tape. Artimus really impressed me, that's some heavy drumming! They were the real deal.
@@artbagley1406 His look was super cool too. That sure was a long-necked Bass he was playing so expertly.
How about that... No auto tune anywhere no computer generated music. JUST PURE TALENT!!
and the best song of a movie ending ever... thats exactly the way i wanna die once like in "devils reject"...^^^^^^
And drugs.....pure drugs, lol
Right on!!!!! This is REAL music!!!!
There is a reason why this band has remained popular all these years. The music they made is absolutely fantastic. It has been said "they didn't write hit songs, they wrote hit ALBUMS" every song on every album is good.
when America was America every race creed color religion and everyone got along bring America back nothing but good times
The confederate flag shown not so cool but realize its southern and all the tragedy history
I was there...about 40 feet from the stage. I always look for me, my brother and his friend in the fan shots - but we are buried in the crowd. What a show. Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton....all for less than $20!
I was there to passing out joints then acdc and zepplin oakland colliseum
🤩
I still say the 1976 performance of Free Bird at Knebworth is the GOAT of their live performances! They were opening for the Rolling Stones who was promoting a new album called Hot Licks. Mick had a tongue shaped catwalk added to the front of the stage and he ordered all the other bands to stay off it! Well, that didn't go over well with lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and for the Free Bird solo, he pulled his guitar army out onto the tongue. It ticked Mick off big time, plus LS had the crowd in such a frenzy, that the Stones refused to come out for hours till the crowd settled down. You can see the performers so much better in that performance. You guys have become my favorite channel! Keep up the great job! And thanks! ruclips.net/video/vm7bkVxBXdA/видео.html
Yes, a great watch.
I agree, Oakland was good but Knebworth was GREAT!
Oakland by far blows that concert away.
Those beautiful ladies are 65-70 years old now. I bet they're still rocking
Can you imagine a band today nailing like this live😅✌️RIP Gary R. Just wanted to add that all 3 guitar players were masters of the strings. You had 3 lead players on stage
It always cracks me up when young reacters say “it sounds familiar” when reacting to a tune like this. No disrespect it’s just that us old 70’s people have heard it 100s maybe 1000s of times. Love it guys!
It's also the final song of "Guitar Hero." That game was everywhere for a few minutes. Did none of you really play?
The guy in all white who jumps around a lot is Alan Collins. He wrote the solo when he was 16 years old. His story of survival/death is the most amazing tragedy of the whole group.
he had it so rough after the crash....not just physically but mentally too... I was 13 around this time but a couple months later I turned 14... I remember getting the soul survivor album for Christmas
The reason there was so many women is because PETER. FRAMPTON was the headliner, he came out after Skynyrd and played a killer 2 + hour set . I was there July 2, 1977 .
We left on Framptons 2nd song... We had a bit of a drive, we were blown away by Skynyrd, and Frampton was playing stuff from "I'm in you". Probably right about the women though.
Was Santana and the Outlaws also there?
@@bella-xp7qd yes, it was "a day on the green" that they used to have in Oakland... Two shows over the 4th of July weekend.
True, Peter Frampton, as awesome as he was got blown off the stage by Lynyrd Skynyrd. They blew away every single app they opened up for, including the Rolling Stones.
Frampton rocks in concert!!!!🎶🎼🎵🤘🤘🤘
Allen Collins killing that solo! Skynyrd was different.
Don't forget "mind control" ....this song just takes over your brain!! Lots of guys...that's who's shoulders the girls are sitting on!!🤣🤣🤣🎶🎼🎵🥁🎸🎹🎤🎙🎧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
As a southern kid raised on a North Florida beach, I graduated from high school in 1977 so we of course chose Freebird to be our senior class song. My oldest son graduated in 2002 and his senior class also chose Freebird for their class song, Pretty Cool!!
This is THE rock anthem.
Free Bird is ALWAYS their last song. LEGENDS OF SOUTHERN ROCK
This video is my evidence that humankind peaked in the 70s. Look how much f*cking fun those people are having!
This may be one of the greatest live performances ever. How many artists can touch this today? Masters of southern rock.
From personal experience, Tool and Twenty One Pilots. All different, but every bit as amazing.
Knebworth 76 is right up there with the best
I would hope this particular performance was one of their worst. I would hope they could at least blame the quality of this performance on them being too drunk or too many drugs to play decently. Watch some live Allman Brothers if you want to see what really good blues rock musicians sound like.
@@rossjoseph3844 TLSB was not a blues rock band and the Allman brothers are great I saw them in concert. But bad mouthing them to promote your choice is childish . LS was one of the tightest playing bands ever
@Mark Hopkins , mostly, I was speaking about this particular performance, which was not good. I know Skynerd has done better performances than this, but this one was out of sync and sloppy. Because Skynerd is considered "Southern Rock" and the ABB are considered to be the band that started the genre, it's a fair comparison. The comparison I was making was that I have never seen the Allmans play a live show and perform this sloppily. And yes, the Allmans are more blues based, but the point is Skynerd did not do a very good job of performing what is a quality song.
I watch this over and over. I was a high school senior is 1977 and this song and the audience takes me right back there.
Allen Collins shreds the guitar like no other before him or after🙌❤️
The GREATEST "redneck orchestra" to ever grace a rock stage, period, bar none. RIP to the late, great Gary Rossington, the guitarist tearing up that melodic, soulful slide on the red Gibson SG. The last of the original members that formed the band back in 1964. Sadly lost on March 5th, 2023. Fly high proud bird, your free at last!
If I could go back in time to any era it would be this one. Great bands, summertime stadium concerts, pretty girls, cheap weed. Those were the days
Yeah they were. The 70s and 80s were unbelievable.
Yes they were! So lucky to have experienced it all!
I saw ac/dc and UFO for $6.50 . You could go to concerts they were cheap and plentiful. Now you have to plan if you want to go. The eagles started the $100 plus tickets.
@@guystephens2881 even getting into local shows at small bars for no named bands is 10-20 dollars when my band and I played a show at a small bar with 3 others bands with maybe 100 people max it was 15 to get in.
And to be in my teens again through all that!
All the legendary concerts yet to be, instead of memories!
''You guys like this slide, I'm gonna show you somethin' else''.......I couldn't have said it better!
The gold standard of rocknroll !
Just pure, raw talent. I think it's tied neck & neck with "Dream On". Oh, Lord...listened again... soaring through the clouds!
The slide guitarist featured in the first half of the song is Gary Rossington who she lost earlier this month and represented the lat remaining OG band member. Gary not only survived the plane crash but also survived the car crash a year earlier that gave birth to the hit "That Smell"... RIP to them all. They are reunited giving a hell of a concert in heaven right now.
This is what the term rock star really means. In my opinion, there are no real rock stars today unless the band is still performing from this era. No auto tune, no social media and the stadium is packed.
coming home By the band Lynyrd Skynyrd
T for Texas T for Tennessee live is another great Skynyrd long guitar solo epic. Also Saturday night special, Needle and a spoon and Gimme back my bullets are classic rock favourites.
Queen’s Freddie Mercury was a master at crowd control, check out Queen’s show stealing performance at the Wembley live aid concert
Great reaction. I saw them in August 1976 at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium. I was 15 years old. The bill included The J. Giles Band, Dicky Betts & Great Southern (Allman Bros. guitarist), Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton was the headliner. I was about 30 feet from the stage. I will never forget that day.
😂😂 LMAO when u said “why am I here”, the brother looked lost. Loved it.
I had seen Lynyrd Skynyrd after they regrouped in 1987 in Ohio in a outdoor concert they were very good but I sure wished I could have seen the original group with Ronnie Van Zant 90% of their songs are just top-notch! A lot of talent lost at a too early of an age
Thank you so much for this reaction. You guys got it goin' on.
Sweet Billy Powell on keys! Such a great guy. Listen to his interview after the crash, so good.
I was there. They called it Day on the Green concerts. On the grass yes, infield no. No cameras, sunscreen or cell phones. We came, we listened, we partied, enjoyed ourselves and made memories that have lasted my entire life...and then the plane crash. We were lucky to have had the band!
Legend goes, this solo is still playing.
LS is timeless greatness. I miss these days.
RIP- Lynyrd Skynyrd all the band members. The music lives on.
Maybe the best American rock and roll band of all time in my opinion. Ronnie Van Zant great front man and that triple Axe attack was awesome
Oakland coliseum... The stage was set in the centerfield fence line to the bleachers. Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter once stood on that pitchers mound, lol. My mom let me go with other 14 year old kids across the bay on BART to see this show. Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and The Outlaws all played sets. No adult supervision, No questions asked, No cellphones.... My 14 year old daughters never has that much unsupervised freedom. Times have changed.
Charlie Finley used to own the A's. One night at a game he noticed a very young man doing a rather odd dance. He asked him if it had a name & the kid said "The Hammer" & he had invented it. He went to work for the A's, his name: M.C.Hammer.
I was there with my brother...it was incredible! One of the famous "Day On The Green" concerts at the Oakland Coliseum. This day had the Outlaws, Carlos Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Sadly the plane crash was just about 3 months later that killed Ronnie, Stephen Gaines and his sister Cassie, one of the backup singers. Very tragic. Was also licky enough to see The Who and the Greateful Dead there as well. Fun times!
"Free Bird!" has been yelled out in venues from coast to coast - and probably in foreign lands.
@10:09 Bass player absolutely KILLIN IT!!! 🤘🏻
Great reaction. Love how you appreciate the song. Sort of surprised you didn't mention the flag in the background....
MCA wanted that flag to market and brand them as southern rock but they were more hippie than redneck. Saturday Night special is a song about gun control which Ronnie was a firm believer in and the drummer Artimus Pyle is a lifelong liberal Democrat. I love the band but it's a shame that flag was used because of what it stood for and the way it misrepresented and stereotyped the band. This is discussed in the documentary by Artimus Pyle and other surviving members iirc...
They are great pure heart felt southern rock
I Always Enjoy these Gentlemans Takes... Another Insightful One... I Cant Imagine seeing that Hideous Confederate Flag... and still having... The Discipline of just ...Listening to The Music... Amazing!!!!!
Greatest Band Ever!! Florida's own Lynyrd Skynyrd WOOOOOOOOOOO We love them so much !!! R.I.P. To the Freebirds that have past.
They may be from FL but muscle shoals has got the swampers…LS and muscle shoals are synonymous with great music! Sweet home Alabama!
@@keelsmac01 Just seen a doc called "Muscle Shoals" (The River that Sings) good stuff. They talked some about S.L. Seems like the best music comes from or in rivers and swamps. As you may know L.S. Hell House/ a little barn looking studio was next to a river and half of FL. is swamp. Hell House is no longer there ,but the old dock where they wrote some ,fishing and drank/had fun is . A new one was built over it to save it. Can go to it ,but would talk to someone who lives by it to let them know why your there as it is in the backwoods. That's for anyone reading this. Thanks for the drop.
Gives me the creeps when Ronnie says If I leave here tomorrow. In about 2 months from this show we would lose Ronnie, Steve (guitarist in red pants) Cassie (Steve's sister and backup singer), road manager and pilots to a plane crash. Gary the last original member passed away a few weeks ago. Billy Powell was a roadie for the band. He sat down one day and started playing the piano, Ronnie said your in the band from now on. Day on the Green concerts played from 1973 to 1999. Revival 2015, 2016
The documentary is titled “If I Leave Here Tomorrow“ It was on Netflix but, no longer. I believe it’s on RUclips TV and Apple TV now… WELL worth the watch!
I will take that good ol Southern Rock and Roll all day everyday and twice on Sunday... Ohhh and the Southern blues mixed in is always good .. lol Great Reaction... RIP to One if not the Great Southern band ever
Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) Gary Rossington(lead and slide the guy making bird sounds) Allen Collins (Lead and slide in all white center stage) Steve Gains( Lead and slide left side of the stage as you watch it) Leon Wilkeson(Bass) Billy Powell( Piano) Artimus Pyle( Drums) Cassie Gaines,JoJo Billingsley,Leslie Hawkins back up singers called the Honkettes,Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gains, Cassie Gains (brother and sister)and manger Ron Kilpatrick and both pilots died in the crash
When life was just so good,im glad im the age iam,i experienced all this and more, and dont regret it either! ❤️
Last time I saw them was August 1977 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Hearing about the plane crash in October 1977 hit me hard. I knew the band personally. They played at venues I worked at in NYC. Artimus Pyle the drummer is the only member of the band still alive and touring as The Artimus Pyle Band and doing LS songs. Now that Gary Rossington has passed away I now consider the group using the name a tribute band.
I saw the Rossington Collins band, what survived the crash in 81…, those were magical days of rock concerts.
I saw Skynyrd the weekend after this show in Chicago at soldier Field.
That's gotta be one of the prettiest piano solos I've ever heard. Then the guitar solo lights up and sends lightening through everyone in that stadium. Wait I almost forgot to mention the beautiful and mournful slide guitar at the beginning. This song wears you emotionally and physically in the best way.
"Play it pretty for Anaheim" is what Ronnie said the night I saw them at Angel Stadium this same year, this same tour... I managed to get about 10 ft from center stage, right in front of Ronnie and the boys..
I watch this every time it pops up on recommended. Ohhh, I miss the clothes, the hair, everyone natural. Got RUclips for the music 🎶. I enjoy your reactions.
Just an added tidbit…..the piano player, Billy Powell, was a roadie for LS. He played the piano and the rest is history!!
Those were great times!
Live is always best!❤
Ronnie Van Zant is considered one of the greatest frontmen of all time. He controlled the crowd like you said the group everything most of the time. We hardly even moved arounduran but he had a presence that drew everybody in
Singer Ronnie was taken from us. His brother, Johnny took over.
You guys are far and away the best !!
4:12 “Play it pretty for Oakland”. Both have A’s hats on. God Bless Lynyrd Skynyrd, Real Music & the OAKLAND A’s.
To be Allen Collins on lead guitar during that solo is what being a rock star is all about. He had the whole stadium rockin. R.I.P.
I love your reaction to this! You dig the music! And that's what it's really all about! We are all together in this! We love so many black artists. The music brings us together! Even though the media and politicians try to divide us! We are all Americans and need to to stand together!
I remember when you guys did this reaction originally, so good! Your comments always crack me up. I believe it's this video when played to the end where you will see three guys passing around a joint. Classic times. Thanks for posting this again.🧡
WAS AT THAT SHOW ALSO!!!! FIRST SHOW!!!! 8th GRADE GRADUATION PREZ.
OUTLAWS, SANTANA, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, AND PETER FRAMPTON!!!! JULY 2, 1977!!!!!
OMG!!!!! 'nuff said.
I was there. Class of '77. It was a bitchin' summer too!! DAYS ON THE GREEN, and the women were allowed access to the (guarded) front during a Cattle Call. A lot of them are 16 y/o's.
Guy's, Frampton was also on the bill at this concert if you haven't already, check out his live album Frampton come's Alive. By the way those chicks you were looking at, most are now Grandmothers just saying.
Once Ronnie passed the Band was never the same not even close
Knebworth shows more of the band, especially Collins going off.
One of the greatest live bands I've ever seen in over 40 plus years of going to concerts. What you're seeing here is years of practice starting out as 14 year olds and putting in years of heavy, heavy practice in a sweltering ,no air-conditioned shack in the middle of a Florida swamp. 8-10 hours a day, every day. They played together literally telepathically, thats how tight and in the zone these guys were. Everyone raves about the triple lead guitar prowess but Leon on bass and Billy on piano elevated them to unmatched levels. Yes they are a guitar band but Billy's talent on piano put their sound over the top!!! Leon layed down the bottom end and his bass playing is superb!! I've seen all the greats from Frank Sinatra ,to Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, The Eagles,Santana and Bad Company, just a few out of all the best 60s ,70s and 80s artists.Very few bands could reproduce the energy, precision playing and near flawless execution like Skynyrd did playing live. The best I've personally seen as far as live shows go would be Santana, The Allman Bros, Eric Clapton,The Eagles ,Electric Light Orchestra and the best of the best , Lynyrd Skynyrd! No exaggeration ,these guys live were nearly flawless in every aspect one can list. Simply incredible and I don't think anyone can touch them still ,46 years after this performance and I'm still waiting to see who can come close in the stellar quality of live musicianship!! I don't think I'll live to see better, that's no exaggeration!! Hundreds of concerts I've seen and to me they're still the measuring stick for live shows!!! This performance was no gimmicks,no auto tune,no ear monitors, playing in an outdoor baseball stadium, all a detriment to sound reproduction compared to todays technology. Yet they destroyed it, an epic, explosive finale!!! Dare tell me of anyone better live!!!
Peter Frampton was the "headliner" for this concert and he was a hot commodity in those days AND very popular with the ladies (but Skynyrd stole the show)...that's Neil Young on this shirt
The non movement was Ronnie’s thing he was a man’s man who didn’t believe in all that dancing and movement and that was Peter framptons show he invented skynard hence the lady’s lol ❤️🔥❤️🔥
Hey man...I'm an old dude and even I've seen Bruno Mars. OK, OK, it was halftime at the Super Bowl. But still, I could tell from my seat in the nosebleeds the man is an entertainer. He put on a good show from where I sat, given the stage he had.
I saw Skynyrd well after the crash, in the 90s. Grew up on that shit. Devastated to learn of the crash, of course. I wasn't old enough to go, but my brothers had tickets to a show that was never held, about 2 weeks after the crash. :(
I was devastated when I learned of their passing btw I'm 71.
The Oakland A's hats are a nice touch😂
In all fairness, this concert was called A Day On The Green and there were several acts that day. Skynyrd was the 2nd to last act that day. Many of the women were there to see a rising heart throb named Peter Frampton. Now I will say I would of gone just for Skynyrd.
The plane crash 3 months later took Ronnie Van Zant who was the bands leader and heart and soul, and Steve Gaines in the red pants and his sister Cassie who sang back up vocals. They were the only 3 stage performers who passed in the crash.
If you want more live Skynyrd there is a whole set from Asbury Park NJ just 10 days or so after this and there are some other live recordings as well from the Knebworth show in England where they opened for the Rollling Stones in 1976.
There are several documentaries on this band, not sure which one you have seen, but the documentary called "If I Leave Here Tomorrow" is the best of them in my humble opinion. If you have not seen it, it is well worth the watch.
Freebird was always the encore as I far as I know. Another song I'm sure you will know is "Sweet Home Alabama" and it was actually the song they played before Free Bird that day. It is excellent as well with several good solos.
Of course you guys are just scratching the surface with Skynyrd and i truly appreciate you both helping to keep their music alive. Looking forward to your next reaction and thank you both for this one.
We visited the crash site last year. There’s an absolutely beautiful monument there. It’s amazing anyone survived the crash into that piney woods forest. Had they not been out of fuel, it surely would have caught fire and killed them all. Still, losing RVZ and the others sucked the life out of them. So sad. They were unique in Southern Rock history.
In my opinion, Allen Collins was one of , if not THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER
Saw a interview Slide player Gary Rossington said he was channeling Duane Allman in his slide playing. The song was written to honor Duane" Skydog "Allman . Who the song is dedicated to.
Yes, it was often dedicated to Duane (and sometimes Berry Oakley as well), it was NOT written to honor Duane Allman. The song was written in 1970, before Allman died.
This is up there with "Stairway To Heaven" and "Hotel California"...
Check out their "brother" band 38 Special ~ "Wild Eyed Southern Boys", "Chain Lightning", "Rockin in to the Night",
"Fantasy Girl", and "Caught Up in You"....
A walk back to a time when being a true musician was a prerequisite to be part of bands of the likes of Leonard Skynard, no posers wanna be allowed. One's genuine skillset was the most valued requirement. They will be missed but never forgotten.
This is Skynyrd.
The Ronnie Van Zant Band
I lived next to a Skynyrd roadie for 8 years. His thoughts? "Steve Gaines....Man..... Could have been one of the greats."
Peter Framton was headlining and the chicks love him.
Love that long shot of Allen Collins standing there with his hair in his face rippin' out that lead.....still give me chills. All THREE guys play lead...haa. By the way, pretty sure this was recorded at "Day on the Green" 1977 up in Oakland. The Line up that day was:
-Peter Frampton
-Skynyrd
-Santana
-The Outlaws...not bad!
After the plane crash, brother Johny took over for Ronnie. For a while he could not bring himself to sing this song- so it was played only instrumentally. WAS too heart breaking too soon after losing his brother, but he eventually was able to sing it in Honor of his Bro. Great band- this song is an anthem for MANY FREEBIRDS!!!
🤘☮️👍🏻 Love your reaction.
It's a beautiful, sunny Friday morning and I'm sitting here enjoying one of the great rock anthems with the crew at Airplay Beats - life is good 😀. Making my day as always, peace and much love from Canada.
**Oh, that isn't John Lennon on Ronnie's shirt, that's Neil Young from the cover of his 'Tonight's The Night' album. Despite the line about Neil in 'Sweet Home Alabama', the guys in Skynyrd were huge fans of Neil, as Neil was of them.
Looks like we might have to react to Neil Young.
@@AirplayBeats Oh man, you definitely should, an absolute legend, the only question is whether to start with acoustic Neil or badass electric Neil and Crazy Horse. I say go for electric Neil first and start with 'Down By The River', it's a slow-burning, wicked tune that really captures his unique guitar style.
I love Young’s “Heart of Gold” live. Also, the Crosby, Stills and Nash days that later included Young. I love “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by them.
Definitely do some Neil Young. He’s among the greatest songwriters of all time
Yes, Netflix if I leave here, tomorrow is the name of it
There is another live video of them doing this song and they were opening for the Stones and they were told not to go out on a certain part of the stage. The stage was the lips 👄 and tongue the Stones trademark and halfway thru the song they all were out on the tongue 👅 part of the stage led by Ronnie Van zany and supposedly he told mick jagger you don’t like it I’ll kick your ass! And the stones backed right down because they heard these guys not only brawled with each other but they would brawl with anyone! Lol
It is fitting that you guys were wearing A’s hats being that this was in the Oakland coliseum. Lol it was called “a day on the green”
LIVE! nuff said.
Morning!
Good Morning!!
So, I was there that Day On the Green, I remember it very well, and since you know the area, my favorite part of this video is that the Oakland Coliseum is still old school……
Day on the Greens were such an event back then and this video shows exactly why… where else would you rather be?
Greaaaaaat guitar solo of the world, because i play a Gibson les Paul model iced tea, guitarplayer know that special gibson model. Very rare at the moment. Jimmy Page plays my model. I payd 3000 Franken. Now you know, i am from switzerland. I am happy to born in adliswil 10 minutes from Zürich. I had a Tumor, when i am born. I am very lucky to be on earth! More later
That triple guitar wave just blows back your hair and melts your mind. MC’s fo sho…✌️☮️
