  • This is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5's BIGGEST Problem... at least, according to everyone who's currently talking about Samsung's latest Foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Today, we're going to be talking about the Z Fold 5's cover display, and whether or not the outer display on the Z Fold 5 is a deal breaker.

The outer display is perfect for me. I don't buy a Fold to use the outside display the majority of the time. Narrow is great for one handed, quick scrolls and checks. I don't need/want an outer display that makes me not need to open the phone (just get a regular smartphone then...)

Exactly 💯. Folding phone is meant to be used with the main screen. Front creen is for basic usage. You should get a slab phone if you want to use the front display, duh. Feel like pixel fold is owned by Google / youtube, and a lot of people feel the need to prop that phone up even though its technology is outdated

Thank you, I get so annoyed by people comparing the Z Fold5 to the Pixel Fold and saying the Pixel is so much better because they use the outer display more. MKBHD for example said he uses the outer display on the Pixel like 90% of the time, which is just wild, considering the price. Cover display is for utility when closed, quick usage, answering calls, etc. otherwise inner display should be used 90% of the time or else it shouldn’t really be considered.
Not to say anyone is using a device wrong if you use the cover display more, but you really would be better off with a cheaper slab phone at the end of the day. Way too many tech reviewers forget that most people have to pay for these devices with their own money. Not using the main function of a device that costs twice as much as one without it makes 0 sense.

Great video. Congrats on the wedding. I was undecided. I'm been waiting for the Honor Magic V2 Global launch but think I'm going with the Z Fold 5 after watching your video. I currently have an S22 Ultra so I'm already in the Sammy ecosystem (watch, earbuds, tablet). My main concern was the "narrow" outer screen but I agree we don't buy folds for the outer screen.

  • @jamesmoodie1925
    @jamesmoodie1925 10 месяцев назад +2

    I can understand that.
For me, the cover screen is a reason for buying. I've always used a samsung note for the screen size. However, I struggle to use it in one hand and is quite a large device. However, the fold fixes this issue entirely for me. This way, I get a small, easy to use cover screen, a tablet type display, but when I need it. It's got weight and is thick but not as massive as a note.
    I do find using:
the Samsung lock / one-handed mode app is extremely helpful
    Increasing keyboard size a little
A few other settings to aid ease of use like panels and drag down for quick settings.

Agree with your points about the Fold 5- you very succinctly laid the valid points out as to why one should have the Fold. use the inner screen!
I replaced my Galaxy S22 Ultra with this phone, as the $1000 trade-in for it made it a no-brainer. The outer display is fine for what I use it for.
I also found that I do not have to use my iPad 11’ tablet as much to watch movies at night as the inner display of the Fold 5 is perfect for this!
The only real improvement I would like to see would be updated cameras and being able to use the S-Pen on the outer screen.
Maybe the next Fold will have this..
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions etc.
    Nice summarization!

One-handed use of the cover display is perfect. It's also easy to grip, which is important when you're carrying $1,500 in your hand. Bonus: most of the casual conent we consume, outside of RUclips, is scrolling/portrait-oriented which means a taller display is better than a shorter, wider display.

You brought up a solid argument for keeping such cover screen. Be that as it may, I'd still prefer that fold 6 or 7 get at least 22:9 aspect ratio for outer screen: same aspect ratio as, say, flip 5 (in essence, perfectly usable) while not sacrificing aspect ratio of the inner screen too much. It's currently at 23.1:9, so I don't think 22:9 is a too big jump for Samsung.

On waveform they were mentioning that they BARELY use the pixel fold unfolded and I think that's the folks complaining about the width of the outer display on the fold 5...and my response to that is that the whole purpose of the fold 5's design is to use the foldable aspect of it more instead of having a big screen when folded to where you don't use it...and in that case? Why even bother buying a foldable you know?

I bought the Fold 4 last year on release. For months after I always wondered whether I'd made the wrong decision given the narrow front display and very awkward to type inner display.
Had to send the Fold 4 for a repair for a day, and I was given an S23 Ultra for a day to use as a replacement.
I genuinely missed my Fold 4. The standard bigger front screens we have been used to are actually so difficult to use one handed.
And let's be honest, most of the time we use our mobile for a quick check one handed.
The Fold series does have its flaws, but in terms of usability for everyday I think they've struck the right balance.

I agree with you. The cover display is fine for me. It starts with expectations. This is a tablet first that folds down into a smartphone. So someone looking for this to be the perfect 1-to-1 smartphone replacement will be disappointed. This device is different and can't be used like a traditional slab smartphone. To your point, the inner display is the primary display for the best of what this device does. The cover display is best for quick views and responses. Closed it makes this powerful mini-computers more pocketable.
Over time it feels like the inner display is universal window for the following:
    1. Mini messaging device - The inner display is better than using a traditional smartphone using Gboard. When closed, I use dictation more. Gboard is the best on the market with dictation.
    2. Document Manager - Reviewing & editing documents and capturing signatures using the S Pen.
    3. Content consumption - Digital media and video
I agree that I would be okay with the device being wider. I would be perfectly okay with a 6.8 inch cover display. It would fix the aspect ratio of videos viewed in flex mode. One whole half of the screen would be filled by 16:9.

I agree with most of what you said. But for me this (z fold 4) is a tablet replacement. It also does a great job. Before my kids stole my tablet I basically used it to watch videos, movies, and read ebooks. This does all that in an amazing way plus I don't have to share it with anyone because it's my phone.

As a Fold4 user and currently awaiting my Fold5 to be delivered, agreed with thid video but still i still do wish slightly wider cover screen which adopts 21:9 aspect ratio. Pixel Fold design a big no go but something like Magic V2/Mix Fold 3 will be nice.
In current fold4 flex mode for watching video (e.g RUclips) the video become so cramp while if cover screen adopt 21:9, it will be more cinematic.
Having said that, still preordered Fold5 as samsung still have the best Fold UI in android.

Honestly ill make a comparison, one of my friends has the pixel fold which has the bigger outer screen and smaller unfolded screen and i have the ZFold 5 with the thinner outer screen and bigger inner screen, from the comparison me and my friend made was he finds that he used majority the Outer screen more on his Pixel fold more than the Unfolded screen, i find with my ZFold 5 i find myself opening up my phone and using it unfolded more than the Outer screen i use that more one handed and for notifications and so on. my main point i will make is do you really buy a fold only to use the phone just like you would if it wasnt a fold? or do you get a fold to use the phone with the Inner screen mostly? this is why i picked up the ZFold 5 over the Pixel Fold cos i wouldnt want to pay so much for a fold phone just to never feel the need or want to Unfold it,

I sent my Z Fold5 back. The foldable market just isn't mature yet. I was holding a bulky, heavy phone with an almost unusable outer display. Can't even use the S-Pen on it. Typing was incredibly frustrating. And I found myself preferring my computer or tablet when I was home, rather than using the phone opened. Don't get me wrong, app pairs and all the multitasking features are awesome, and Samsung probably has the best foldable out right now. But these things have to get a LOT thinner (hopefully some of the Chinese foldables are an indication that that's coming soon), the outer display wider, and the inner display more reliable long-term. The software aspect of foldables is coming along nicely though. Still several apps that aren't compatible even with the Labs feature turned on, but formfactor is the main issue at the moment. I can't see many preferring this phone over a traditional candybar unless they don't have a computer or tablet. I'm back to my S23+ now and though I never had any issues with it to begin with, I have a newfound appreciation for it. Considering upgrading to the Ultra for the built-in S-Pen and camera, though admittedly that phone borders on too large. Still the better alternative to the Z Fold5 IMO.

It's absolutely useless to watch videos on the big screen cuz of the aspect ratio there are big black bands above and below the content. A candy bar phone will actually give the same if not more screen real estate for video playback. The Z fold 5 is purely for multitasking aficionados who want 3-4 apps open at the same time and not ideal for multimedia consumption

it was a bad case, I went back to best buy and they swapped it out. New one works perfect. Pen from new one would fall out of the bad case so it was just the case being malformed from the factory.@@valismind

The simple fact is that Samsung knows how this works. They know very well that if they make the outer screen to good to use, most peoples will just barely use the inner screen for anything. And because the whole point of a foldable device like the Z Fold4 and 5 is to use the foldable inner screen as much as possible (as you said), then Samsung CAN'T compromise that.
So I don't see the outer screen as a negative point. It can be a little better ofc by making the outer screen some few mm's wider, but not so much that it takes the whole point of the inner screen away.
As long as I can do the basics on the outer screen, i'm pretty happy. And I agree on you with the points you made on the inner screen on the Z Fold5 on why it's the most optimal aspect ratio on a foldable device.
Most peoples doesn't understand this. They have to use the Z Fold4/5 over a longer period to see the whole point.

Perfectly said and agreed 🙏 I don't want to sacrifice the inner display too much. It is extremely usable. Two hand typing on it is also super comfortable.

You can always have a wide cover display and when you unfold simply rotate the phone to obtain a taller form factor.

The outer display on my Z fold 5 is exactly the same size as my iPhone 13 mini that i have been using for 2 years. The outer screen is great to use however the standard keyboard is terrible. Hence i installed the Gboard, with this keyboard i make less typing mistakes. i have been apple user from the first iPhone and this is my first andriod device i love everything about the Z Fold 5.

Obviously there is a debate but I don't understand why people don't understand why the phone has a narrow outer display. It's very it is a bit of a thicker phone when folded. If it was wider it wouldn't feel good in one hand.

I've been using a Fold for 2 years (3 and now 5). I run a small business and use the cover for 80%, including heavy typing. The other 20% is taking notes and showing customers pictures or videos. The cover is totally usable, and I actually prefer the narrow aspect. Its refreshing to see a reviewer step out and give a different (actual) opinion!

I returned by Fold 4 because I work in a FAB with gloves on. Many times, I could not type on the front display because the glove made contact with other letters. The solution would have been to use the stylus, but there is no stylus support on the front screen. When Samsung introduces a Fold with front screen stylus support, I will be one of the first to buy it.

If I opened up the phone with gloves, I was scared to drop it on the concrete floor. I did not find the outer screen narrow, just that it lacked stylus support.

I ended up going back to iPhone but the Pixel fold isn’t there yet in the foldable fight. They have the hardware down but Samsung has the software down. After narrowing down the battle between the 3 companies (Apple, Google, Samsung) I wanted to invest in a company to call home and it led me back to Apple ecosystem 🤦🏾‍♂️

Something I noticed not one of these reviewers ever mentions is the user experience during video calls. Using the slim outer display on a Meet (Duo) video call you have a very small window on top and the entire bottom half filled with all of the text and blank space that would normally be on the very lower half of the screen. It's such a waste of space and I guess Google has not optimized duo video calling to fit the outer displays aspect ratio. Those cameras used for the video calling also really suck. I mean, 4mp is like we're in the early 2000's here. C'mon Samsung you can do WAY better than that. Especially for a phone at this price point. Incentives & discounts aside! I am curious to know what that experience is like on Google's folding device. Also the lack of Spen functionality on outside screen , stinks. What is that?! 4mp grainy video calls and no true Spen functionality are for the birds. I really wanna like this phone but I think I'm returning it and going with the S23U until next years Fold. They've come a long way so perhaps next year they'll hit the mark.

Hi, I had a Fold4, lasted 8 mths before the screen developed a hairline crack at the fold, then stopped working altogether. Samsung have reviewed, have agreed it is a manufacturing fault and have agreed to a full refund. I now need to decide whether I am prepared to risk it again and get a Fold5. What is your view/experience in whether the Fold5 screen is more robust and will have a longer life than the Fold4. I have returned to my S9 which is very old, but still working, battery doesn't last long though. I have always had good experience with Samsung. Just very disappointed in the Fold4

it is like people say sport car can't carry big luggage, or big suv can't run fast. what do you really want? i want fold5,lol. i had note 10 back then, then fold3,fold4,fold5. why?
here is years of experience..... as note screen got bigger each year, the benefits are obvious, see more content, but can you catch up with fold phone? no. that is exactly where fold phone is for to give one and two hand operations. my experience tells me when i want small for convenient and quick check information.. pull out your outer display or for heavy research or RUclips watching, open the big screen. if you don't want the convenience of both sides, buy s23 then. the fold 5 is the best refining fold from past generations. (i am speaking my experience). why? better hand holding, better battery life (20% increased) due to gen 2 processor, consuming less power. you see, some reviewer said fold 4 is same as fold 5, that just shows their ignorance of technology. they look at same size, same battery, same camera etc. then it must be the same phone. No. they are not same at all. camera photos show much details, better speaker sound, brighter display. just about every categories. fold5 increases it's quality. don't judge by their appearance, but have them in your hands to campare as i did. many said don't up grade, why not? your fold4 is going depreciated too, so i traded it in. my final thoughts on the design, if you make outer bigger that means inner screen is getting even bigger and thicker. but the fold phone should be optimized to a point to both small for easy carry and large for viewing. that is what fold5 has achieved.

of course, the external display is great, if it were wider, I don't need a folding phone ... that makes sense ... it fits perfectly in the hand for basic information ... and if you need it, you can open it and have a large display ... for me it's this is the logic of folding phones, if someone wants a wider external display, let them buy a classic brick like the apple Max and it's a big impractical phone

I ranted on the outer display, about how much i disliked it and i did not even own the phone. I did eventually buy the z fold 5 and i got to say i was totally wrong. I really like the outer display and the phone is so pocketable and great for one hand use. I would not want it any bigger. I think its just perfect. Especially if your don,t have huge hands. And if you do, go buy a pixel fold or one plus open. With three different sized foldables on the usa market currently, there is something for everyone. Bigger is not always better, to me choice is.
