"You're the Dread Wolf, Solas!" - Hagrid
A good character is a character that can makes you feel a range of emotions.... Solas >_>
Solas is great because you can almost believe, maybe totally believe what he believes in so strongly, even though he's pretty much the villain. That's a great villain character.
Solas is a fun character but to me personally I found others who I cared more for in the entire series like Morrigan, Cullen, Allistair, Cassandra, Sten, Oghren, Shale and many more. There are people like Vivienne or Wynn that do nothing for me, in wich I mean I don't care for them since they don't bond with you like the rest.
I played both the entire series of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, with every DLC and every thing I could do since Bioware makes the best series when it comes to RPG. You can argue that a game like Skyrim offers more exploration and a bigger world and it's true, but when it comes to companions, romance and the like, no one can do it better then Bioware.
I also love the way you have so many choices regarding almost anything and that they have their own consequences both in the game you are playing as others that come after it. Lastly, the humor in the game is top notch. Can't wait for Mass Effect Adromeda but most of all I want a next Dragon Age!
I totaly agree!
I wanna join him no matter what! we have to let the current thedas burn? OK let us do it! I am with you!
I hated him, such a boring and lame as character. He obviously has a secret agenda but I didnt give a single shit. Alistair, Morgan, Wrex and Garrus are another story though
I completely agree. I personally fell in love with his character from my first play-though as a human warrior. He made me laugh, he made me sad and he made me pissed off. Yes, he got few thorns here and there but that's what made his character so memorable for me. I feel like he have a strong personality that some people will dislike, just like Sera. ( I avoided Sera. She was funny, but because our opinions would clash I didn't take her with me through the main story. I surprisingly found myself sensitive to the magic topic. ) The fact that there were so many clues and details about his true identity was also pretty cool. I ended up screaming hysterically at the screen "I knew it!" at the end of the credits, and it was totally worth it.
This reminds me.
Never before have I been more proud of a character in any franchise than I was that moment in Trespasser, when Dorian announced that he would leave for the Imperium. To see him choose proactive involvement and a position of which he used to speak with such disdain, over a chance for blissful complacency and mutual domesticity by his Inquisitor's side... I was heartbroken, but so, SO proud.
I may have cried. A little. Or a lot. Once. Or maybe four times.
No one can make more compelling characters than Bioware. i have cried so many different times it's not even funny i still think the 2 moments that i will always remember is after the citadel dlc if you romance Thane, man i freaking bawled my eyes out. and the other was a small moment which i most people would shrug off. i was doing an Assquisitor (literally be a dick to everyone) so i sacrificed the Chargers, then i was talking to Cole and he relived Krems last moments, "Don't worry boys the chief is coming. He'll save us. Horns up!" I freaking lost it. I cried checked if i could load back and change it. couldn't it had been done fore awhile. Deleted that Inquisitor and haven't been mean since.
Agree wholeheartedly. The actual plots / story of their games are so-so, but good grief do the characters in their games make their games immensely memorable and cause me to be invested in it in ways few games ever achieve.
the Witcher devs cdproject red make amazing characters
The best and worst moment in ME for me. Fixed ME3 ending.
Shepard: I want you to go back to your home.
Tali: I have a home.
Me: ;_;
Then you ain't Strong Hearted, you weak hearted.. you care too much about people.
i agree the witcher 3 is very much like a bioware game very emotional characters!
Solus and Solas. I see what you did there.
Patrick, is that a glass of fan tears I see? The ruler of feels.
Man the Solas feels are inevitable. By far one of the best characters ever made by Bioware
My favorite characters in Bioware games are Garrus, Tali, Liara, Legion, Miranda, Iron Bull and Dorian.
What about Wrex and Grunt, those guys are great.
Legendary15 I really love Wrex and Grunt but they aren't my top favorites.
+Jaguar550 Fair enough I personally didn't much care for any of Dragon Age Inquisition's characters tbh, did like Origins and Dragon age 2's though.
Yeah she nice too bad she wasn't in DA:I, I just don't like how you pretty much only get one game to play with most of the characters, where as ME you can meet up with all of them pretty much, I hope ME Andromeda is no different and this character is you're character throughout, like 1-3.
As for ME ... Garrus is the ultimate Bro, Liara the ultimate Waifu, Mordin's singing was amazing and Grunt, who is basically Shepards adopted son. So cute.
In DA ... I love Cullen way more than Iron Bull and Dorian. The way he changes during the three DA games is just amazing. Also: Varric. Varric is awesome. Nuff said.
YOU made people kill Mordin?
I'll remember your face.
i loved the fact you had all the choices
Out of curiosity I killed off Mordin.
NOPE. Nooooooope. Never again.
Never forget 😭
Me too :'( That's why I usually play a renegade with a soft side. :'D
Even during my renegade run, I couldn't bring myself to kill Mordin. I'm just glad I was able to convince him to lay low so that I could get the Salarians and Krogan on my side.
it's true that no matter how much games I play, bioware characters has always an special place in my heart,
Thank you for all those feels
In my recent playthrough, I discovered that, by being silent with Eve, I was able to make Shepard confront Mordin about his stance on genophage and then he yelled "IT WAS A MISTAKE!". I cried as it was the first time I really saw him being transparent about his guilt and inner conflict. It wasn't a cute singing scene as the paragon path or a horrible murder scene as the renegade path, but its a neutral scene where he was more upfront about wanting to fix his mistakes and accept his responsibility over his actions. So much depth and desperation in one short scene.
It saddens me that David Gaider won't be writing the next Dragon Age game, but I think the series has been left in good hands. Solas is one of my favorite characters of all time, not just in video games, and I'm glad the one who created him will be lead writer on the next game. Also, anyone wanting to get a good sense of Weekes' storytelling should check out Dragon Age: The Masked Empire.
I love all the Dragon Age characters so much. I myself really love writing for characters and I really feel that idea of agency. That even if you aren't explicit about every aspect of a character, you're able to piece together what they must be like, and it feels so fleshed out, like you've truly befriended them in a way. It's so rewarding and Bioware does such a good job of it, unlike other companies that focus more on story and setting than character and don't give their characters enough focus. A setting doesn't feel truly alive until it's populated. I wish you guys took on intern character writers because I would devour that opportunity.
Some choices in the game still hurts, damn it. But there is one killer moment that stands out to me, you keep ruining my mascara with the music, "Once we were" is so painfully perfect as I walk through the Skyhold to say goodbye to my friends and encourage them to do their own thing, fullfill their dreams and live their life as they see fit. And what kills me the most, later, is that they still come when I need them. One final time, what is it he says Dorian "Let's make it a good one, shall we?" with just a hint of fear. God damnit you're good. I kinda hate you right now, but in time I think I'll love you guys.
"...someone else might have gotten it wrong."
Aaaaand that's when I start choking up. Damnit.
I wish other game developers KNEW this stuff! (Lookin' at you Bethesda.)
yes the same user review who gives bloodrayne, a movie made by uwe boll a 7,7 out of 10, despite being a movie worst than catwoman : www.metacritic.com/movie/bloodrayne
As you can see, we can totally trust the metacritic user review...
Samantha Maggs: I don't 'wish' anything like you said, I have no idea how what you said relates to what I said. I wish other game developers knew how to make characters with their own life/needs/interests etc and gave us reasons to care about those characters and believed they live lives outside what they mean to us as the main protagonist in the game. I pinpointed Bethesda as a developer who doesn't do this with most of their NPCs and don't seem to know how to do it with most of their NPCs. If you want to assume I was singling out CDPR that's up to you, but I didn't mention them or even hint that they might learn a thing from Bioware, that was your manipulative logic, not my intent.
Bethesda is getting better with characters, but their strengths are in other areas. Like open world, freedom, immersion, world design, etc. Its not that Bethesda is incapable of it (as clearly evidenced by Fallout 4, they can make good characters if they really want to). It was just never a priority for them up until somewhat recently because a lot of fans were talking a bout it. As I said before, Bethesda's strength lies in other things.
Well this aged poorly
A powerful sentiment about Mordin. He did this terrible thing-for the good of the galaxy-and he was right-it worked, but at a very high cost-then he turned around and did it again. This time, he was able to see all the consequences- and changes his mind, thus sacrificing his own life to put it right. But to put it right was within his own character, his own decision, obviously not everyone agreed with it. He went against-the Dalatrass and the Salarians in general to clear his conscious. That right there is mindblowing, and makes for an unforgettable character, and strengthens the entire story that much more.
I love Sola's so much :'( if he dies in the next game I'm going to be very sad and depressed.
Solas is certainly a character...... Seriously though, my all time favorite character from any Bioware series is either Tali or Garrus with Varric as a solid third place in the line up of what are absolutely amazing characters.
When I first saw Solas I thought he looked really weird and lame. Now it's 8 years since I completely fell in love with him and I have never gotten over it.
Very insightful! I love these interviews/behind the scenes video. And touching on both Mordin and Solas just tugs at my heart strings. ❤ Bioware make you care about the characters so much.
This is why I think Alistair was the best character he was the most Human while everyone els had their personalities of either being good or bad Alistair's was a blend of both Good and bad he sometimes gave into revenge or refused to show mercy but you still knew he was good guy
Solas is a freaking shocker Patrick. When I saw his official art, I thought absolutely nothing besides 'oh look a bald elf haha'. I'm eating myself, Solas turned out to be my favourite video game character. I love surprises, give me more in DA4
To me, the great thing about Mordin is that his story arc is tragic and we so seldom see personal tragedy in games. Oh sure, there might be a razed village or something to demonstrate why the bad guy is the bad guy, but it doesn't strike close to home the way that Mordin does. Players are used to more or less steady increases in power and ability, losing Mordin is huge blow. Fans are like "Whyyyyyyy did you kill him?" *sob* and I'm like, what you are feeling is exactly why and why tragedy is part of drama.
According the the thumbnail. Patrick Weekes . I approve.
what makes a good character? when someone says let's talk about Sola's and you're like "let's not."
This was the highlight of my day ;)
I wish the video was longer D:
A good character is one that can make the audience not see them as plot devices.
I loved every character that Bioware has created. I sort of warmed up to iron bull. Not much for rough sexuality or off the cuff roundly jokes but sera and iron bull had layers worth cringing through those jokes like some people in real life. They put so much effort into squad characters and such that my protagonist was left on the burner. Id like to see a more of my character develope in the games. I' liked the trespasser dlc because my inquisitor finally had A moment. Most of the time I was conducting interviews. Perhaps a system where other characters in the story ask you about yourself and the game actually developers your background and remembers it. I don't mean vague where you from and all you get is a vague answer with which you can respond . I was playing a male qunari. What a great way to give information about the Vasoth is by having your character fill everyone in. It would have given me more ownership over my character.
Let me guess... you guys are intoducing a ME Gwent at release, right?
I honestly would not be surprised to see a Wicked Grace virtual card game between now and a DA4 release (2018+?).
For me, Bioware games aren't really about the game or the overarching plot, they're about the characters I'm getting to know. It all started with Minsc and Boo, and it's never really stopped. You guys make really great fictional people, please never stop!
Oh hell nah! Solus gets 3 minutes (they were really good 3 minutes, mind you, and I really like Mordin), and Solas gets 1? I would've loved for Solas to get 3 minutes, too! Then again, if they talked anymore, they may've spoiled something... BUT STILL!
These people wrote character like Flemeth, Morrigan, Fenris, Merril, Ashle, Kaidan and Tali. They are geniuses. Period.
I have always hated the decision between Ashley and Kaiden, but it's actually a very beautiful, compelling choice. It wasn't always true but now I wish that we had more time to invest in a relationship with both of them before the death of whichever one you chose. My reason for that is that I want games to emulate life. I think most of us do at least in some way, and that's the way life is. Sometimes choices matter. Sometimes everything depends on what you do. But sometimes you can do everything right but still be so wrong that someone is going to suffer and/or die.
Every time I play ME3 I MUST cure the Genophage. I do it for Wrex & Mordin and have tears every time.
What Makes a Good Character? Not being Jacob, Ashley, Kaidan, Vega or shitty fucking Kai Leng.
Or Diana Allers.
or Donel Udina.
to be fair, Kai Leng is on a whole separate level of shit from the rest. Space Kanye & Vega are meh, but ash & kaidan are decent characters. They're one of the few squadmates who actually question what the hell shepard's doing rather than blindly follow him/her like most other squaddies.
Vega was cool.
You disliking them doesn't make them bad characters. Except for Kai Leng. And Jacob. And Allers. Fuck them. And Kaidan is pretty cool in a dorky way, he's a bit vanilla, but he's in no way a bad character.
I didn't quite get the Solas part, what were they talking about? Still, Mordin > Solas :P
Having Solas in the thumbnail for ' what makes a good character ' PFFT pfft I say! (Although I loved to hate him.)
solas!!!!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!
I hope we see some old companions from Dragon Age: Origins and DA II in the next game. xD Especially Origins, it's like the first game never mattered. I miss Oghren...
And I can't wait for ME: Andromeda to get here. :D
All the people on the Citadel near the end of MA3! Seriously, it only takes one moment to make a character sympathetic or relatable for greatness. Most side NPC's turn out to be the most memorable. Khalisah al-Jilani is an example of someone who came out of the blue, with paragon interactions, as someone I actually liked when she was just annoying for 95% of the game.
You monster! Why did you make me kill Mordin?
MASS EFFECT IS LIFE!
What makes a good character? a Bioware character.
KOTOR is still the best Bioware game I have ever played. I would kill for a KOTOR Remaster on current gen platforms.
LOL, I never realized Solas looks like Voldemort!
Solas reminds me of Crowley. Fleming used him as a model in Casino Royal.
MASS EFFECT RULES!
if I could post a picture here,I would post a picture of Cullen here.
Great characters I think are the ones who are merged into part of the story and go beyond just daddy issues.
there are so many amazing characters in your games (Morigan, Solas, legion, Mordin and more) but I can't think of a single character that is really greatly written in andromeda.
I have confidence that Bioware will remain masters for the characters creation. The genophage part is by far my ME3 favorite. Although they've learned a great lesson of not letting a unknown character closing a awesome trilogy..sorry but this is known as bad writing...but we can wait no more for Andromeda O_O
My favorite characters in Mass Effect are Garrus and Mordin
That's super interesting. Where were these guys when Andromeda was being created?
Good question, Bioware.
We're both lost on this.
What game is this?
BioWare needs to remaster Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age ll. Who's with me?
I wouldn't say Solas was poking fun or blaming me at all. In my save he was just sorry he had to do this and explained his point of view and i totally get it. He's my mate and i love him. We'll laugh about this later. Unless in DA4 i have to kill him.......
Then i refuse to save Thedas.
0:40 tell that to David Cage. Abomination of a game that Beyond: Two Souls is.
My fvorite characters are Mordin, Wrex, Legion (i killed these three in the same gameplay once and still feel like the worse person ever), Varric, Anders, Garrus & Solas (and i always end up romancing the last three dammit) ;-;)
nothing beats allistair and anders and capt. janeway
I saved Mordin, yes I killed Wrex and everything... And not because I like him or anything, I just think he was right so I did not fix the genophage and saved him. That is usefull to hate Krogans it seems =)
When you sell out the guy who killed Mordin
can we get a last update to me3 mp, give higher chance of URs
lol I was browsing the whole comment section to see if people were still asking about ME3MP
+Rina F. R someone told me about Warframe, tried it loved it, not going back too ME3, will check out ME:A but that's not til next year, right?
Rauliont Zennfaegrin
Yes, you're right. We're supposed to expect an early 2017 release, according to lolEA. There are still a lot of people playing MP. Still, would suggest the application of space magic to obtain a shamefully large amount of credits for maxing your manifest.

They're gonna kill off the Inquisitor in DA4, aren't they?
Why are NTP characters always the best written? Maybe Weekes is just Bioware's best character writer? Not sure.
lol Oh man these two I love it 😁👍.
What makes a good character? the one that tells you he's gonna destroy your world but u still love him anyway lmao
The best characters thay made in games are Dawn Star,Silk Fox and Black werlwind!
Dammit Anders!
Bastilla or this Twi'lek women from SWTOR in Sith Inquisitor story.
What Twi*lek in the Inquisitor story? are you thinking og Vette from the Sith Warrior story?
+Lord Chrispo Or missing the difference between Togruta and Twi'leks. Inquisitor gets Togruta companion, Ashara
Aries yeah
cried when Mondin died …
they dont die.
What makes a good character is long hairstyles
I love BioWare 💜🐺
Am I the only guy who wants a romancable Female Dwarf in DA:4 ? someone like Sigrune from awakening.
Yeah, not being able to romance Scout Harding properly was. . a really bad call. She was awesome, and say you play as a dwarf - you don't have a dwarf to romance, just other races who're two feet taller than you? It's just daft. Particularly considering that dwarves are a fairly insular race.
I miss Mordin ;-;
Short answer: a good story, a good narrative and a coherent plot...
Dragon age inquisiton do not gave attention to side quest as witcher 3,
The Romance was also not good and trespasser DLC should have been with main game.
Please rectify these issues and the next game will be a masterpiece.
Please add cinematic camera during conversation.
Sorry,it just i felt,Josephine ,Cullen and Solace romance did not have Intimate moments. While Cassandra,Blackwell,Sera and Dorian were ok.
Ironbull was great.
Okay maybe I am too much into physical bit of romance : )
idk man i never felt close to a character in DA:I like i did in mass effect and DA:O :(
So, what evil wizard erased everything discussed in this video from your minds while ME Andromeda was being made?
Hmmm... For me ?? Garrus, Garrus AAAANDD Garrus all the way xDDD
Simple answer: Flemeth.
You had a good thing with Nireen until you killed her off you bastards! ;_; never forget!!!
Obviously bioware have the best games ever made with the best characters & stories ever made(same with bethesda & blizzard)weeaboo games s*ck in everything, these are facts.
people think solas is a good character? FUCKING LOL
Game of thrones thinks differently...
A good character has personality and an interesting backstory, as much as I like Garrus he's got only one of these and Ashley neither so I don't really get why all the new amazing characters introduced in ME2 got pretty much trashed in 3. ME3 is a shitty game tbh not at all deserving of a perfect score, more like a 6.5/10 game at best, even the combat is worse than it was in ME2 which leaves me with little to no hopes for Andromeda.
DA:I is full of drama queen... Luckily there was Dorian, otherwise I would have thrown aside the game immediately. I prefered way more DAO with Alistair and the development of Liara and Garrus in ME. Sera was so annoying, Solas was such a cliché, I don't even know why Blackwall was there, Ironbull was so dull, a caricature, the Arishok of DAII was much better. A real disappointment. The biggest one though is the main character, the inquisitor, I didn't feel any attachment to her. She was no one to me and it was a big mistake to put a character with no past in the last chapter.
The thing is the inquisitor needs a lot of choice on the player's part of what kind of character you want them to be. My inquisitors are all interesting to me because I play them differently from each other and take serious consideration on what kind of person they are. Like, I've got a mage who heavily supports templars, is self-loathing, and very religious. It's cool to see how that meshes with the other characters. He's basically best friends with Vivienne. lol
But yeah it's different than Hawke, because I can tell they really wanted to implement that roleplaying aspect and not everyone does that.
I was refering more to the first Dragon Age, where I felt close to the cause of the elf because I had the intro to explain me what was going on and who I was. Hawke had a good, solid story but in the end it was pointless.. like me3 endings... DAII was just a filler mainly, the only important thing was in a dlc.I don't understand what you mean with the "roleplaying aspect", I did that too but I never felt as immersed as in the others title. At least in DAO I had the ORIGINS to choose but in DAI I'm just a clueless elf that gets random requests of help from his far far away clan :/ Once I had Skyhold my clan could have at least come there to help me or send someone to say "Hi, glad you are alive".. I can weave a whole story background in my mind but it doesn't have any relevance in game.
What makes a good character? Start by not making them look like Danny Devito in Asari form. *cough* ME:A trailer Asari *cough*
Omfg Danny Devito.... now I can't un-see that. Fuck you very much. :D
;)
Patrick Weekes allowed the killing of Mordin? Un-liking. Unsubscribing. You monster.
god I miss the old Bioware 😢
While I love all Bioware characters, Garrus has to THE most overrated one of them all.
Bioware and good characters? Don't make me laugh.
Fuck off.
Too bad they can't make good characters any more. I'll stick with CDPR on this one. ;)
This also aged rather poorly
@@madhouse2594 Nah.
> video abour good characters
> with Solas on the preview
seriously?
SJW destroyed Mass Effect series
Isn’t being a SJW a good thing?
Bioware forgot how to make interesting characters. DA:I offered maybe one interesting charater and in ME:A, the most interesting characters in my opinion are SAM and Jaal. I could give to shits less about the rest of the crew. I can't stand Liam, never use him, Cora is about as dead as a rock, Peebee is kind-of interesting, Drack is just not Grunt or Wrex, Vetra might as well not exist (I don't really like her either). The story is weak and can't even stand in the shadow of it's predecessors. I also think the devs put the game in the Andromeda universe to be lazy. Fuck Andromeda, I'd rather be in the Milky Way because the universe Bioware created there is tremendous. On another note, DA:I is crap. It was okay through the first playthrough, offers no replay-ability, the multiplayer is boring as hell and the DLC is straight bullshit without a season pass. ME:A is crap, worth one playthrough, the multiplayer is a reskinned ME3 and offers no PVP for some unfathomable reason (why the hell would anyone keep playing it?). It gets boring doing the same shit over and over in an endless grind just to unlock the characters you want through their bullshit crate system that no one likes. WTF is happening to Bioware and why do I feel like you all have been going downhill since joining up with EA?
