+Bluephantom600 Same happened with me. This is the second video she showed me which made me interested in learning. The first was a motivational video she showed us at the beginning of the year. Thank you Miss Teacher!! xD
I watched this at the pre-departure training/workshop (about three months ago) of my voluntary service under the European Solidarity corps and I thinks that it’s awesome how accurate this hero’s journey resembles the journey of a volunteer abroad. To all the volunteers out there: You are all heroes, keep going!
This is great! I’m here because of The100DayProject and I plan on using that time to write, illustrate and self-publish 3 children’s books. Big ambition, but a wonderful challenge. And this is really cool to see right now!
A hero is the one who steps up to the plate without being asked. A hero is the one who does their best to make the right decision. A hero is the one who learns to live with the wrong ones and moves on. A hero is not always the strongest, the smartest, or the bravest. But a hero is the one that will stand by your side. Through thick and thin. A hero will bring you food when you are hungry or drink when you are thirsty. When you are sick a hero will tell you you will be better soon. And when you are about to take your last breath. A hero will hold your hand and say goodbye.
Nice idea but in a zero sum game, whatever you win, someone else looses, who are you to decide who deserves to win? You can't maximise and minimise a value at the same time, and that's taking an analytical approach. In practical terms, most people can't agree on what is the right reason even less can agree on the right action.
Awsamazing Eden Heroes are our perspectives for example a doctor saves a life, to you he is a hero but beats his wife without anyone knowing. Is he good or bad?
Aries PanzerLeader89 that implies they don't face any problems. I never said they don't hurt anyone, get hurt themselves. Or that their reasons are justified. I just said to the right things for the right reasons. Doesn't mean they don't have character flaws.
A few years ago my English teacher showed this to the class for an analysis assignment. This brought back some nostalgic memories from me. Still a really good looking video.
I’ve seen many hero movies and I’ve noticed two types of heroes and journeys. First type of hero is someone having extraordinary powers which he/she uses for the good of the crowd. Second type doesn’t have anything special and struggles to find it but is extremely motivated to help others. In turn people start helping that person and with the help of others that person becomes the hero that he/she always wanted to be.
Batman is a great example to the second type, that's why he's my favourite. First type is like Spiderman or superman. The similarities between them is that they have to go through a lot of suffering to understand and have the mental capability to be a hero
This animation is amazingly DOPE! The content was great too, but the animator needs to know he made an incredibly awesome piece of art. Cheers for Kirill Yeretsky!
I'm writing my 4th book and this time I have been searching for better ways to connect to my characters, making a complex villain and a strong hero. This helped me a lot to think about my characters that are my heroes, thank you. 💕I love the message!
One of my favourite types of hero is them being less of a hero and more of a protagonist, where there actions there doing aren’t necessarily good or bad, kind of a mix of the two. I really like it when fiction blurs the line between hero and villian in order to question you or change who is the villian and who is the hero
That's what I want or avoid in my story, dead parents: Instead of getting the parents killed, they're the main motivation why my protagonist goes on a journey all around the world; to save them and also find the kidnapper and why did he do it.
but he gains the glory of destroying the Death star. EDIT: he also managed to kill off the brains of the empire: palpatine died because vader threw him down that pit which was the result of luke skywalker being shocked killing vader in the process.
This video skips a crucial part of the hero's journey: refusal of the call. The hero refuses the call to adventure initially. You might think this step is skippable but it is not. Refusal of the call is huge in making or breaking the hero. Either they fully succumb to fear and fail to go to the special world, or their mentor helps them to accept their fears and continue anyway.
That sounds a lot like premature angst before finally just getting on with the adventure. lol If it matters by character development, then its characterization. Therefore, not included in a specifically story-driven formula such as the one shown in the video.
Immersible But if its happening to the main character, isn't it an important part of the story? Sure, its a temporary situation, but every story with the hero's journey has to address the hero's anxieties at some point. We won't connect with the character as well otherwise.
Noah MacGillivray Like how other literary elements have its own categories, characterization and plot development are two completely separate concepts. Even though they might intertwine and come from the same source, they are still separate. Btw did you know, there are ways to tell a hero story without learning a single thing about the main character? ;3
Alright, I see your point. Personally I prefer to see the hero's concerns and fears because it makes the story seem realistic, but I can see where it might not be necessary. Also, do you have examples of such stories? I'd like to read them :)
A man who respects everyone, even a beggar or poor people and helps them by providing foods and clothes are real heroes, according to me they are the real heros
1. listen for your call to adventure 2. *accept the challenge* 3. conquer your fear (overcome) 4. claim the treasure you seek And then, do it all over again
"What do you have in common with Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and Frodo? You're human, just like them!" Frodo was a poor example if you're going to be talking about human heroes, lol
Me: *is acting deeply offended * *cough cough * I identify as a Demon excuse you. * cough cough * Brother: WTF is she doing? Whatever, LOVERBOYY( Yup, my boyfriend gets this...he's been adopted by my parents.) DO NOT EAT ALL THE CHIPS. NO, DON'T SHARE THEM WITH MY TWIN BROTHER! Why did I write this?
What makes a VILLAIN: Just like the hero, starts at status quo. Second, realization: an event changes the way they see their world, makes them see only the horrible things. Come to the conclusion that violence is the answer to their new found hatred. Third, preparation: He learns a new power,(he learns magic, gains followers etc.)that he will use to change the world. Fourth, reveal: he shows his new power to the world, through actions, threats, or maybe he challenges an authority figure, or protector. Fifth, demonstration: he shows the world he's no joke by destroying something, maybe he defeats the hero. The demonstration can also act as the reveal, or can come beforehand. Sixth, trials: the villain and hero constantly clash, sometimes one of them wins, but doesn't kill the other. Seventh, great battle: at this stage, the villain and hero know each other more than they know themselves. This can span anywhere from a few hours, to a few years. Final, result: he may win or lose, but one dies, and the other gets their way.
adventure starts... 1.there was a painted arrow where it leads to my school 2.enters school 3.sees an angry guy wants to beat you 4.fight until the end for the treasure 5.defeated him 6.a guy comes and you felt that the treasure has came 7.and the is...... the guy was principal and says that you are suspended from school ugh....life
Saitama: 1. Life is meaningless 2. He decides to become a hero 3. Does 100 Pushes, squads and run 10km a day until he becomes bald 4. Becomes the most powerful living thing in the universe 5. Life is meaningless
In my own opinion, the one who know fear and make a bravery choice to fight against it. No matter success or not , or what reason behind, they are heroes. Only the one face their deepest darkest fear shall be worthy to gain great strength. And they are gonna be stronger no matter how many failures they met. Those failures will be the best teachers of the heroes. What they cut down is the weaker , earlier themselves but not their enemy.
Yes and no. If you don't survive your "hero journey" then you did not try hard enough. The one who tries over and over and fails will eventually win and still gets recognized rather than the one who tries once and quits or doesn't use their everything whilst performing the task. It took Thomas Edison 1000's of tries to create a light bulb. But he did it. And now is a hero in his own way. :)
Clayton Whiteside the point of my comment is that people die all the time trying to accomplish their dreams. while fiction may have a bias toward those who lived, perhaps we should also recognize that a lot of people fail and don't get second chances. also Thomas Edison was, in many ways, a thief. A great man perhaps, but not someone I hold up as a hero
Depends how you look at it. In real life, accepting the call to adventure is often the real victory. Whether or not you actually slay whatever external dragon you face is secondary to what happens to you when you are willing to step out into "the special world".
This is sooo entertaining! Thank you for making this!! I am trying to make a story and its so exciting to create it by using this video's preference. I think long days later, my story will be even complex and entertaining as I have more experience and knowledge. Thank you so much, TED- Ed!!!
"That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero." - Stan Lee
"What myths teach us is not that dragons exist, but that they can be defeated." It's from "Le Château des Étoiles", from the french comic. Read it, it's really good.

Omg I was just reading that the other day! I love the Rick Riordan books. I'm getting bored with quarantine so I've been rereading them. They're just so amazing!!!
whenever I read a book, I always come back to this video. the hero's journey is very common although, these stages don't exactly happen in order. sometimes some stages repeat.
Percy Jackson follows this wheel more than any of the other examples that were shown in this video. I do love Harry Potter, but Percy Jackson was the perfect example.
There just aren't enough comments stating that Frodo isn't a human. If a few hundred more users could post that I'd find it really helpful. And refreshing.

A man who respects everyone, even a beggar or poor people and helps them by providing foods and clothes are real heroes, according to me they are the real heros
1. listen for your call to adventure
2. *accept the challenge*
3. conquer your fear (overcome)
4. claim the treasure you seek
And then, do it all over again
We are all heroes in our own ways. From teaching someone something to helping someone during a bad time. We are all truly heroes.

He has human characteristics though

My Oblivion character was kajit and he killed an evil death god and stopped the invasion of tamriel.
The ending motivational message was really touching. Thank you :)
What makes a VILLAIN:
Just like the hero, starts at status quo.
+Makael Conda Nice one! ^_^
+Makael Conda Not all villains resort to violence... But other than that, this is pretty good!
That's because villains are heroes too but they're the hero of the other side of the world which is the bad side :/
I've always wanted more stories to address that :) multiple perspectives make for a pretty interesting story.
+Makael Conda did you put this together or do you have it from somewhere? i like it ! :)
Every one is a hero in his life
because
Everyone is fighting with their problems
You don't know .
Some time even to live is an act of courage.
adventure starts...
1.there was a painted arrow where it leads to my school
2.enters school
3.sees an angry guy wants to beat you
4.fight until the end for the treasure
5.defeated him
6.a guy comes and you felt that the treasure has came
7.and the is......
the guy was principal
and says that you are suspended from school
ugh....life
Saitama:
1. Life is meaningless
2. He decides to become a hero
3. Does 100 Pushes, squads and run 10km a day until he becomes bald
4. Becomes the most powerful living thing in the universe
5. Life is meaningless
Ironically painful.
Be a hero just for fun
*Laughs in Minecraft*
Everything is Optional
@@user-tzzglsstle585e38 that's very true, but we are talking about one punch man here
But can't he listen to another calling in his life and then repeat, literal monsters are sometimes equal to the ordinary challenges we face
I will think about this the next time I read a book or watch a movie.
I mean there's a lot of other little steps in between these huge ones.
+Count Orlok like?
PRGME7
Like a special object and meeting with a powerful character and other stuff (Idk just look it up pls)
+Count Orlok ok
same here!
Inspiring, but not everyone survives their "hero's journey"
Good point and well said
Yeah, right!
Depends how you look at it.
In real life, accepting the call to adventure is often the real victory. Whether or not you actually slay whatever external dragon you face is secondary to what happens to you when you are willing to step out into "the special world".
And there's deadpool
+jenny crystal lol even he follows that pattern
Even Justinian, Named The Last Roman, A Byzantine Emperor, follows this pattern, up until the Born Again part.
deadpool is a anti-hero
he's an antihero, not a hero

In the Tolkien-verse, hobbits were an offshoot from humans.
