Some of the Tamils of Sri Lanka are genetically SInhalese people who later started speaking Tamil after facing invasions from Tamil South India. Best example is the KOVIAR caste only found among Sri Lankan Tamils. They are genetically Sinhala blooded but they started speaking Tamil few generations ago and now are a part of the Sri Lankan Tamil community !

We are the same race, but culturally different. I have many family members who are Tamils due to intermarriage. Even the last batch of Tamils are still very close to us Sinhalese. Buddhist- Sanatana dharma is the same.

Tamils in SL are certainly NOT the oldest Tamil population. They were not even called Tamil until 1911. Before that they were called Malabar people in Sri Lanka. That is mentioned in colonial records as well. Malabar people were settled by Europeans by bringing them from the Malabar coast. Hence the name. In 17th century, by the time Portuguese first occupied Jaffna, it was a sparsely inhabited place. And the Portuguese referred to the Jaffna inhabitants by the name Sinhala. Also the Jaffna Portuguese agreement was written in Sinhala language.

Same happened to Sri Lanka.
