  • This is a reaction video to Hawkwind performing "Space Is Deep" from the "Doremi Fosol Latido" album from 1972. The song uses an acoustic guitar for the main instrument enhanced for electronic space sounds played by Lemmy. The vocals are also enhanced and phased. A very different sounding song for its era.

First flight with the Hawks was in 1970 and they have been part of my life since then. Space Ritual was a ground breaking live album recorded at two different venues. It set the standard for all live albums that have followed. The stuff that is churned out in recent years by the Hawks is not a patch on the sound produced earlier on the flight. Dik MIk and Del Dettmar added such a wonderful layer to what Brock, King, Turner and Lemmy were laying down. The Greasy Truckers recording of We were born to go and Masters of the Universe are exceptional. Added to all of this was the wonderful poetry of the departed Robert Calvert, Stacias dance and the lightshow magic created that accompanied the live sets. Something to behold for sure.

If I remember right, they had their own lighting effects company that toured with them on the "A Space Ritual" tour that were called Liquid Len and The Lens Men, eighteen months of psychedelic madness that will never be seen again!

@@BugsLivesmatter66613 Jonathon Smeeton was known as Liquid Len and he did tour with Hawkwind and designed many of the ground breaking lighting effects used by the band. The first showing of his rope light that was laid across the back of the stage and over the line of the amps stacks was ground breaking. Pure white and flowing. Nowadays they are two a penny and used as christmas lights but back in the day they were unique and spectacular.

As I understand it Lemmy played rhythm guitar. He was roadie at a gig where the bassist hadn't turned up. Somebody asked him if he could play, then shoved a bass guitar in his hand and asked him to make some noises in E. The rest as they say is history.

Todd great video. I look forward to you listening to more Hawkwind (and Space Ritual eventually).
On a completely irrelevant tangent, the other bassist that has a fairly unique sound is Peter Hook ("Hookey") of Joy Division and then New Order. Although I listen to both these bands, I'm not a massive fan, so I'm not sure I my recommendations are more than tracks I particularly like. Blue Monday, is probably New Order's most well known track. She's Lost Control, Transmission and Atrocity Exhibition are three of my favourite Joy Division songs, although Love will tear us apart is the most poignant given Ian Curtis illness and suicide.
    Happy listening :)

Hi Nick ... I did buy the Joy Division albums but felt they were a bit dark, especially Ian Curtis's voice. I always have loved "Love Will Tear Us Apart" though. With New Order, I did buy their first 4 albums but was never a big fan. "Blue Monday" definitely has a great bass hook in it. I love "Ceremony", "Everything's Gone Green" and "Temptation" as well.

@@drivingwithtodd1781 I completely understand your opinion re Joy Division. Whilst I know there is a lot of people out there who are fans, apart from their more poppy hit singles there a hard band to listen too. That said, I do think perservering is worth it as I discovered songs I really like that I wouldnt have heard otherwise. For New Order, my own experience is mostly with their hit singles, which I really like, but not enough to call myself a fan.

I think there has only one band that captured the spirit of Space Ritual and that was Gong (Daevid Allen) when he teamed up with Here and Now for the Floating Anarchy live album 77. Here and Now on their own continue the psychedelic space rock sound.

I have seen Daevid Allan a few times,he and Gilli smith played a gig at Daylesford( in Victoria Australia) at the end of the nineties, which a friend of mine organised where they played a fair bit of electric camembert, they had a great light show done by a guy called Hugh McSpedden,a legend in OZ. Spacey acid ballad with slightly dub reggae vocals? Its the lilt in Brock's voice and similar to Sandanista-era Clash. Then we have lift off! Yeh and that's a cool video too.
I think in terms of music of the time, Hawkwind are more a follow on from late 60's groups - the Who, the Beatles, Hendrix, Moody Blues, CSN, Floyd, Zep and the Velvets combined with Krautrock. There's prog there too (some of those groups are proggy of course) but also glam (Bowie, T Rex, Mott, Queen) and some other underground stuff like Broughton Band, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, Gong, Man, Pink Fairies - whose Larry Wallis went on to form the original Motorhead with Lemmy. How Lemmy started playing Bass is a cool story, I think he was only supposed to be a roadie. He was a roadie for Hendrix, who incidentally showed a lot of interest in joining the band after a smoke outside the Isle of White Festival which Hawkwind were gate-crashing (a couple of phone calls followed, but 3 weeks later Jimi OD'd). and a parallel story is that Lemmy wanted to get rid of his flatmate in 1977, this guy who couldn't play an instrument, and his friend John Lyden told him one day he was looking for a new bass player after Glen Matlock left, so he put forward the flatmate, Sid Vicious - it worked for Lemmy so why not Sid?
I really think more people need to hear Hawkwind, having the occasional song used for a Ford advert ain't gonna spread the word. If you want to stick to Lemmy-era, I'd recommend Master of the Universe (71), Urban Guerrilla (73), Paradox (74) or Motorhead (75).
