My first tree removal!

- I'm not a professional arborist, but was asked if I was willing to take down this pine tree that was stretching over my friends' summer house on an island in the Finnish archipelago. How could I say no! My first complete removal and the second time on spurs. There are things that I could do better next time, but also things that I'm super proud of that I managed to pull off! Please leave a comment if (when) you spot obvious mistakes / places to improve.

I picked a small, straight spruce as my first tree. This is a lot more difficult so good job! Keep at it and you'll be a pro. Just hang around experienced people and you will learn fast. Greetings from Sweden!

I’m quite happy if I can get some small pruning jobs from friends and neighbours every once in a while. Can’t really charge for them either. Doing it as a hobby and excercise 😅

Wow, you did great! Have you been climbing without spurs for a while? When I was in my 30s, I climbed and took down a few trees. Lots of fun, would have liked to do it for a career. I just turned 60, and my son started a tree service a little over a year ago. I've climbed quite a few since then, having the time of my life. My only suggestion would be to not rush for any reason. Generally, mistakes happen when you rush.

Best advice is to rewatch how you work and critique your work. When I began doing that I improved all of my techniques.
Thanks! I have already re-evaluated some of my practices after watching the footage: I need more separation between my lanyard and climbing line when working on a spar. I also need to give more attention to the lean of the top and also the possible wind factor.
Using your srt choke as you climb up, i can feel the fear. Been there as well, you are doing a good and safe job as a side hustle. Good work.

Choking off as you climb up a small diameter stem like that is not a bad idea fear or no fear.

@Matej Kubis - My Tree Life that used to be me until I gaffed out and dislocated my shoulder causing fractures and tearing up the inside of my shoulder.
@@facelesspsycho8252 good point! definitely a good idea on smaller and slippery bark trees. Cut my forearm a few days ago, I wear anti-cut sleeves now on my arms. Wish you best of luck

Great work man! One thing for next time, I would consider tying a finishing knot on the bowline you use for your srt, when you were choking up the tree near the beginning you can see the bowline loosening off. The finishing knot will just keep it nice and snug. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Yeah, you’re right. The bowline doesn’t like cyclic loading and this Xstatic rope in particular seems to be pretty slippery and stiff.
Now, I don’t show it very well in the video, but you can actually spot me doing a Yosemite backup when I reach my high tie in.
I do also have a Quickie so I don’t know why I wasn’t using that. 😅
Congratulations great effort remember go slow and double check your gear also good idea to have some one to back you up.

Right! That would be great to have someone more experienced show me how to properly do stuff and point the mistakes as I’m going to make them. Unfortunately people like that don’t grow on every branch! (Pun intended)

Haha! I know. I’ve acquired it over many years, but most of the arborist specific stuff I have bought during last year or so. I would love to be able to do it as a side job, but sadly don’t really have the time for the proper education. So, I climb trees on my own yard and sometimes help friends with theirs.

On skinny trees like that try to put your gaffs more into the side of the tree... spreading your feet apart more will be more comfortable for you.
