Oh my god finally an actual engineer who actually knows what they’re talking about. All I’ve seen so far is just tech bros talking about whether I can game or something
To be fair, if it can game, it can CAD. My aunt is a proper architect and I’m studying engineering. Her whole office is all ROG laptops. I had a surface, it isn’t cutting it (there’s no dedicated gpu) so now I’m looking at the ROG surface z13 thing. Basically a surface with a gpu, it’s just really ugly and expensive.
Gaming is pretty analogous to CAD in terms of what you need in hardware. And you can spend less on a gaming laptop that will do just as well as these "workstation" laptops in these tasks. I bought a Legion 7i for $1770, adding on 4 years of warranty to about $1850. This gave me an i9, a RTX 4070, 1TB of storage, 32GB of RAM, and a 1600p screen. More than enough for an engineering curriculum. And its covered throughout my schooling. It's solidly built with all-metal construction and a premium design. While it is a gaming laptop, it looks fairly normal in all respects except for the RGB lights in the keys (which can be set to white or turned off entirely) so it looks as if it could be in a professional environment. It nets about 5-6 hours on light tasks which is perfectly acceptable in an environment like a university with lots of outlets (should be plugging it in for intensive tasks like rendering anyways). The same RAM, storage, and display resolution in a Thinkpad P1 would have cost me over $700 more than what I got my Legion 7i for, and would have given me worse battery life, slower RAM, a worse CPU, and worse GPU. Likely, worse cooling as well. Oftentimes it does not make sense to get a "workstation" laptop as they will just greatly overcharge you and be overkill for your purposes (as will the gaming laptop). Ultimately both a gaming and workstation machine are built to render things. As for a laptop in the real Engineering workspace, you will likely get a work laptop so that choice is taken out of your hands anyways.
@@moretonesraros6703 I use it for mostly school/work related purposes (Matlab, excel, word, autocad, etc.), plus minor gaming, and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Excellent points. I’ve been a long time MacOS user and it pains me to have to switch back to Windows for CAD applications. The only work around for me has been to run Windows in Parallels virtual environment or previously to configure a dual-boot Mac using Boot Camp. While these solutions can work they can also add cost to a Mac ecosystem. In the end the virtual machine seems to be the best option as long as your CAD application supports virtual environments.

From my experience, the more balanced the team, the less gender matters and the more we can just focus on the engineering. And at school I wouldn't worry about it as long as there's a couple of other women since we tend to stick together and support each other 🙂 And finally, even if you get told otherwise, remind yourself that you belong and that you're just as capable 🔥

my concern for hp is anti-right to repair, lenovo being that the batteries wear out oddly fast, asus has some overreaching reliability issues - they seem mostly in other lines not laptops though, and then dell seems like a nice spot but I'm not sure if that's accurate. Framework is also interesting but new, and also lenovo is from an older laptop but the battery I bought could've been on a shelf a while. Haven't had a hp or asus laptop though
Nice video 👍👍😊
What do you think about the dell inspiron? Thank you
It doesnt have Dedicated Video Card that's why it is not recommended.
Does anyone know if i should get a macbook or windows laptop for software engineering? I can’t seem to find an answer to my question anywhere. Thanks!
Also great video!💛
Is Ryzen7 integrated graphics enough for mechanical engineering ?
4:32
How would I know if it’s dedicated?
You sure about 8 gigs ram ? I would think that 16 to 32 gigs with CAD
Let's gooo, thank you soo much, I am from India and i wanted all these things, no one gives a shit to mechanical engineers here, thank you very much again
Glad I could help!
hello i will be studying material and metallurgical engineering in a month
its not as intense as mechanial engineering when it comes to curriculum
i was planing on getting a mac but it doesnt seem that logical do u have any info on that (ik that im gonna need autocad if nothing else lol)
Can one go for surface laptop 3 or surface laptop 4 in place of Dell XPS 15?
What about Apple macboom 15 inch come with 6gb graphics card
For ME don't buy any apple laptops
Apple are not meant for streaming on live, many of STEM applications nor FEM analysis simulation or geared toward many mechanical engineers.
What is the best laptop for mechanical engineer in new model
Superb ✨
how do you manage to survive in a men dominant field? both while studying and working.
thanks in advance
With dad jokes and noise cancelling headphones 😉
But jokes aside, for work I would only consider joining teams that have other women in them. From my experience, the more balanced the team, the less gender matters and the more we can just focus on the engineering. And at school I wouldn't worry about it as long as there's a couple of other women since we tend to stick together and support each other 🙂
And finally, even if you get told otherwise, remind yourself that you belong and that you're just as capable 🔥
@@theannareich just started off college and I only have one other girl in my class, it feels awful. Hope it gets better with time.
good work
Hi Anna, I am a Mechanical Engineer. I will begin my masters studies in France on Erasmus+ Scholarship. I will hopefully be using Python, MATLAB and 3D modelling and simulation software but I have tight budget of around 750$. Which laptop do think would be good for me in this range. I have found a laptop (Dell Vostro 3520 i7 12th gen, 8gb ram, 512 SSd, 2 gb nvdia MX550 graphics card, 15.6" display with WVA technology). Please share your opinion on this laptop. Thanks.
Did you end up buying this laptop? I’m thinking of getting dell xps 15, but am not too sure 😊
Hey guys, I just bought a macbook pro for mechanical engineering because my old windows laptop keeps crashing. Should I return it and get xps 15 instead ? Please reply and lemme me know.
What did you end up doing?
I know this is the best but budget breaking😢!
What is the series of asus zenbook
Can Asus Vivobook 15 i5 work for engineering?
Really great video. But i want to ask more, does the screen need to be 100% srgb ?
which laptop is the best for watching movies and youtube content?
Any laptop will do 😉
Well my 4gb ram lenovo cant even open a search browser its get heated up very fast and then screen freezes so pls get a laptop over 8gb ram
@@theannareichwish
@@pie.cinnamon I've bought a second hand lenovo with 4 gb ram and it doesn't have such problems (I've only reinstalled Windows 10). Yes, it heats while watching youtube on 1080 and higher resolution, but also does my old asus with windows 7 and 6 gb ram. Maybe you'll need to clean it's cooling system and replace termal paste on the processor
@@funflevel676 no I gave it to service multiple times and they already done thess
I have an asus tuf gaming and it's been ok for me
