      as it should be. especially macbooks and ipads or shit like that are so reliable fr. I bought a used ipad air 4 from 2020 two years ago and I'm sure that I will be able to use it at least for another 3 - 4 years on a daily basis. Same goes for my macbook, I wish I could find some high quality headphones that would last similarly long. Moral of the story: buy and keep your old high quality tech, it's more reliable than you think. And it's also not that bad for the environment. and your wallet.

      Having that is great, but iPads/other writing tablets are very practical. For one, having infinite page allows you to never worry about page space or linear organization (which is just not how the human mind works). It also allows easy color switching and highlighting. You can open multiple apps at once, so you could have gpt open on the side with a note app on the other. It really becomes next level for note hierarchy, where you can easily go to any year of schooling notes in a matter of seconds. You can use it as a second screen when not note taking and reorganize/erase stuff in a way that isn’t possible on paper. I could go on and on about the use cases of an iPad but those are the ones on the top of my head. Paper and pencil will never die, but since tablets have such a large learning curve [and thus higher potential] you can essentially evolve to learn more efficiently.

    What sort of engineering softwares do you use on your Mac as a Mech Eng. student? The industry standard softwares (like Solidworks for CAD and Ansys for simulation) are mostly available on Windows only. Do you find yourself restricted with your MacBook when it comes to those engineering softwares?

    • @ukimenustah7932
      @ukimenustah7932 Год назад +4

      he said he "rarely used my laptop for engineering applications anyway (even though my laptop could handle it). Most of the time I went to the computer labs on campus and worked on projects or homework where these softwares were needed with my friends. We were together most of the time and this was the easiest for us since they had any software we could need already installed on it. If I had to use my laptop though, I had to go though an online portal set up by my college to access the softwares such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, or ANSYS. Very few classes actually used SolidWorks, but many of them needed MATLAB which my friend with a 2016 MacBook Air could run perfectly fine on. "
      I definitely wouldn't recommend it though, computers may not always be available and the software and virtual machines universities provide are generally not as smooth and reliable.

I'm using Fusion + some kind of CFD software everyday and being able to do that everywhere I am is a gamechanger (as I'm often away from home on campus/workshop) - you literary can't do that on anything this guy showed here. Yeah, there are a ton of programs that just don't run on macs. The computer labs are filled with people who can't do the work on their macbooks.
      We were specifically told if you want to use the exact same software (which they teach on) get a Windows laptop, otherwise here are some mac alternatives, but you have to figure out yourself. Still most of our classes most people had macs, but complained they weren't teaching them correctly.... they told them at the beginning!!!
      And at end of year the computer labs are all taken.

    • @NathanLemoine
      @NathanLemoine  Год назад +9

      Hey Jose! From my perspective, I actually went into college with the same mindset you seem to have. I was worried as an engineering major that if I got a MacBook it would not be able to run or handle to softwares so I did not get one and instead I got a Windows Surface Book 2. But, from my experience and going through 5 years of college, I rarely used my laptop for engineering applications anyway (even though my laptop could handle it).
      I personally recommend just getting a MacBook which can handle all school work and MATLAB very well, and for other more intensive softwares such as 3D modeling to just use to computers on campus where they are already installed!
      Hope this helped :)

    • @IWantYourNachos
      @IWantYourNachos Год назад

      Personally I wouldn't get a Mac book it's too limiting on software, unless the bulk of your profession uses just adobe software apple is just not used nor supported enough. Just get a good quality laptop, spring for one with a graphics card if possible. I hear framework has some cool stuff with upgradability but I have never owned one.
      Or what I prefer and wish I would have done.
      Build a good desktop and use a Chromebook for daily bullshit when out and about.
      Chromebooks are cheap and great for basic internet surfing/ word processing/ decent excel (sheets in Google land) usage( not as good as excel but more than enough for most students).
      Using the Google apps was AMAZING for group projects! Very easy to share and work on documents at the same time. I never felt like office (even now when I use it daily for work) was as good/seamless as Google when sharing/collaborating files.

      I have not because many of the engineering softwares I needed to use for school work, I would 95% of the time utilize the computers in the engineering labs. These computers had all of the applications I would need such as MATLAB, ANSYS, SolidWorks (etc) pre-installed on them. Whereas for me to use my own personal laptop it was always a headache to try to get a school license to download the softwares for free, or to essentially screen share from a computer in the lab. Plus, my friends and I would usually meet up to work on huge projects / assignments together and it was always easiest to just meet in a computer lab so they were always available to us. And for all other types of assignments you can easily utilize google workspace or microsoft office applications on the MBP.

    Okay so one question about one detail that every engineering student does, why do yall use the TI calculators instead of the HP prime its cheaper and absolutely destroys it in performance, currently in my 2nd year of EE and thinking of buying the prime so am just wondering is there something fundementally wrong with it that everyone uses TI ? Great video btw really enjoy this one and the ipad review

      I got mine back in highschool about 7-8 years ago and just didn't want to get a new one 😭 I've actually never heard of the prime, and I don't think they really matter all that much. Casio, TI, and other graphing calculators all do the same things just slightly different

      You’ve got this. I was in the same position and went to a school where I didn’t know anyone. There are usually very good orientation programs that help you meet a bunch of people really early on. As for the school work it’s essentially just high school but with more work but you also have more free time. It’s an adjustment for sure but if you know engineering is what you want then it’ll all work out in the end. Best of luck 😁

    • @NathanLemoine
      @NathanLemoine  9 месяцев назад

      Hey, I use too but once it got worn out from writing on it so much I took it off and haven't replaced it since. I do reccomend any matte screen protector from amazon. I was using a generic one that came in a 3 pack for about $10. They're just as good as a PaperLike but cost so much less. The matte protectors reduce overhead glares which is especially useful in class so you can see the screen better, and they give your ipad a more paper-and-pencil feel while writing on it. I highly recommend getting one! :)

    • @aditraj4259
      @aditraj4259 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@NathanLemoine so you just use the naked iPad screen right?? A recommendation - you should try the mothca matte screen protector for your iPad it isn't as rough as a paper and provides the protection similar to a tempered glass and probably create a short about your experience with it after a couple of weeks or so.

    Ive decided to go into mechanical engineering and i want to get an i pad for notes and stuff because i see how convenient it is, but i worry about softwares like solidworks. Will there ever be an instant in class where i would need it? Any advice would be amazingly appreciated!

    • @Atlas_
      @Atlas_ Год назад +2

      Potentially.... every school's ME program will look different so it is impossible to say for sure.
      I currently daily drive a windows pc with dedicated gpu for CAD (and other pc only software) and a pen-enabled device for notetaking.
      Thus far (going into 3rd year), the vast majority of my classes have been lecture type courses where I only took notes. I have also taken a handful of design courses (labs) where I heavily used CAD programs for projects and coursework (mostly outside of the classroom). I also participate on an extracurricular competitive design team that heavily uses solidworks. Having a personal laptop is very beneficial for me because I am able to do CAD work and use engineering software anywhere and anytime I want, not just in a computer lab when it is open. Also, there are many "industry-standard" software packages students can get free licenses for that are pc only (many are windows only). Getting experience with such software while in school is helpful when applying for internships and jobs. A personal laptop makes this all of this more convenient.
      In regard to taking notes on a tablet, I like it because it is easy to erase mistakes, easy to add screenshots and images, and a tablet is a little nicer to read my digital textbooks on than a laptop. I will also say that it is possible to take handwritten notes on a laptop using a usb/bluetooth pad & stylus although not as convenient.
      If I had to choose between a laptop and a tablet, I would choose laptop. Access to pc only engineering software is more important to me than taking notes on a tablet. Access to engineering software has been an extremely important part of my education and development as an engineer. I can give up the "nice to have" digital notes and take paper notes instead.
      Everybody's experience is different, and this is only one opinion.
      Hope this helps!

    • @themadchris666
      @themadchris666 Год назад +1

      @@Atlas_ yeah wow! Thank you so much that really does help clear up a lot for me, see im going into my first year and i doubt im going to get thrown right into the engineering software my first year. So i think imma buy a tablet type device(Such as the surface pro, and the ipad) and just keep the money saved for a more powerful type laptop with a dedicated gpu. I should also mention that i have a great desktop at home and i was hoping with a good laptop/tablet hybrid and my strong desktop at home id be okay.
      The specs of the desktop is
      I-7 intel cpu 11th gen
      16gigs ram
      3060
      Do you think id be okay with my desktop at home, and use a surface pro 9 in class?

    • @Atlas_
      @Atlas_ Год назад

      @themadchris666 i would recommend looking into the specific engineering degree program you are interested in to see what the school recommends you have. Many schools give recommendations for laptops/device specs, though your pc is more than powerful enough.
      I won't give specific recommendations for tablet devices, but i do have classmates who use surface pros and others who use ipads.
      Though, in the end, it's up to you to figure out what works best for you. I would highly recommend doing research into what you want (i.e., price, size, battery life, etc.) and what you don't want (device quirks etc.) That way you can make an informed decision.
      Hope this helps!
