Parkview Ave. General Alarm Fire (Yonkers, NY) 3/12/19
YONKERS, NY - At approximately 6:15pm on March 12, 2019, the Yonkers Fire Department was dispatched to 15 Parkview Avenue for an apartment building fire. The fire which appeared to have started on the top floor of the 6-story building, quickly took control of the cockloft, and brought the fire to a 4th alarm. A general alarm was then called to bring in all off-duty firefighters. More than 150 families were displaced and a shelter was set up for them at Roosevelt High School. There are no reported injuries and the fire looks to be caused by plumbers using blowtorches to weld and sweat pipes inside a 6th floor apartment.

Hope those guys that got blasted by the hose are ok, must have been painful knowing the pressure they work the hoses at, lucky they never got blasted out the bucket, Deep respect for those guys. Stay Safe
Luckily they were all OK...
Great video, thanks.
Thank you
I have never agreed with a firefighter call back. However mutual aid is what I prefer. Calling back off duty firefighters is time consuming. In 41 years I experienced only 1 general alarm and it was a total nightmare. During my 41 years mutual aid was used twice which worked much better even for staffing the stations.
Who Is Yonkers going to get mutual aid from, Bronx or one of the villages in south Westchester? If Yonkers is busy, so is FDNY Bronx. If you're the mayor of Tuckahoe, NY, are you going to sign an agreement to send your FD to Yonkers. Fat f*cking chance.
Everyone back to station in one piece "Job well done"

Looks like the cockloft took off big time & it got ahead of the trenchcuts Excellent Clip

Just out of curiosity, why do you call the roof space cocklofts? In the UK we call them attics!

That fire is burning Hot and Heavy. Top floor and through the roof. From one side to the other. Old brick building and most likely no firewalls. How did it spread so fast from one side to the other? The fire got ahead pretty damn quick. Makes you wonder! Firemen and Firewomen have the hardest job in the world. Nothing but RESPECT for these FIRST RESPONDERS! They kick major ass!
So sad a beautiful building and too many people displaced.
Really nice coverage of this incident Fire Ground Images. As soon as I noticed the tarps hanging over the parapet wall from the roof of the fire building I immediately thought to myself the fire may have been caused by human error. Fire investigators have determined the fire was caused by plumbers using blow torches so now 150 people have lost their homes due to an act that could have been prevented.
Thank you Tommy

in fires like this, would it make sense to use helicopter drops like they use for forest fires?

these old buildings don't sufishiant sprinkler systems let em burn
better to get rid these fire traps then to save them
@@stevenherrold5955 -- They just can't let it burn; too much risk of it spreading to nearby buildings.
@@stevenherrold5955 - I'm sure the people in the lower apartments would appreciate that. Yeah, their apartments will be unlivable because of all the water damage but I bet there's a lot of memories that can be saved. With many, they don't care about most of their belongings because they can be replaced but their photos, jewelry from long gone relatives etc. mean the world to them.
With the apartment building fires they get in the New York, a few departments need to invest in water cannons.
Good job
Sad, so many people lost their homes.
thats a shame.that old building.i hope no pets were left behind
Whats a General Alarm?
It was a 4th alarm, and then it went to a General Alarm where they called back all off duty members to respond to work.

Sadly to say, the lady one floor beneath me had many, many pet maggots in her fridge and bathroom..... They are still trying to revive a few of them....
No, the broasted labradoodle tasted quite fine, although red meat should never be cooked well-done. The BBQ sauce covered the overdone meat dryness, and the meat had a nice smoked flavour.

My building fire alarm went off once. I grabbed my cat, purse and car keys. And my other cat’s ashes. That was all I took. Turned out to be a burning bush at the building next to mine. Dm bass was shooting off fireworks and hadn’t brought a fire extinguisher or even a bucket of water at the ready.
No fire walls I guess? A lot of homeless people now. They left in the morning having no clue what was about to transpire.
why are the lights still on.?
Building wiring comes from the bottom up. Local fuses or breakers trip as the fire shorts out circuits, thereby isolating other circuits away from the heat and fire. Eventually the main power will be disconnected and main gas supply valve closed.
If it was a triple-decker or smaller house or apt, the power would be cut sooner, in this case, having the power assists the fire crews in being able to see easier. It use to be practice that fire command would set up two or three floors below the fire floor to better control the situation, so turning off the power hinders instead of helps. At least it use to be that way.

Really? Was it also caused by plumbers like this one was determined to be? Or aliens? Here's 25 cents for some tinfoil for your hat...
mmtallm So you think man went to the moon? 😂😂 Not everything is the truth. Seems there’s a lot of ‘Block’ fires over the past couple of years. There’s been a few in Dallas, where the poorer people live.
And what about all those in California. In all the rich areas. They were controlled by Energy Weapons. D.E.W. Go find that one.
@@MikeT-TheRetiredColonel kinda wish now you didnt wake the tin foilers 😉
Looks like the turtles and the foot clan were fighting in those apartments again
I really don't understand what Americans use as material when they are building houses. The roof of that building is burning like there is a petrol station there or a refinery. My grandfather was a firefighter so he knew exactly how to build a house and which material to put where inside the house. Unnecessary risk for those brave firefighters that are jeopardizing their life just because material that that building is made from is 90% combustible material and NOT AT ALL fireproof!
Many buildings in the USA give the impression that it is the third world! ...
I think it's a question of economics. They don't have the spare money for better and safer building material. Bit of a lottery I know but that's how it is.

What happened there? Looks like a ladder hose missed...still balls to the wall with those guys..no GUNS..more dangerous..less pay..nicer all around. Yonkers cops are mostly young dicks.
Electricity in the building wasn't turned off in the first hours, are you crazy guys? this is the first thing in those cases
Plenty of work there for the aerials.
OMG dude, 9mins in, the guys getting sprayed and yelling! I mean.... ya it sucks for them but goddamn if that wasn';t hilarious.... Edit: Sorry if I said it was funny. I do think they were ok though, it didn't look like they were hit full force. They kept going after all
It seems funny, until you realize the power of the water, I had a similar incident happen just over 2 months ago, was sprayed directly with a hose stream full blast for about 4 seconds to my leg, Ended up causing compression syndrome, a missed diagnosis from the ER then led to the CS killing the muscles and nerves in my left leg, I now have a permanent disability, am hardly able to walk with my left leg at all, and have been out of work for 2.5 months now, Not to mention I am not sure if I will ever be able to return to active duty on the department.
Water is powerful, and can severely injure others around you, that is why you should always know what your hose is doing and what it is spraying.
@@ChiefsFireman damn, sorry to hear about that. Let's hope these guys were OK...
Sorry to hear about that. Hope you end up back on the line.

Well, at least this will serve as a reminder to those who FF... As I understand it many people use these kinds of vids for training. Me, I'm just fascinated with the whole process. It's a bit thrilling to behold. Every battle is a like a real life action movie with real life and often unthought of consequences like this one. Those hoses are no joke though... I saw one get loose in another video toward the end of the porch fire and one the guys let it loose by accident while it was going and sure... you could hear the boys laughing about it afterward, but that could';ve ended badly. Luckily the guy who dropped it literally pounced on it to grab it quickly. Seems to me like fire is only half the danger faced in every situation. downed lines, falling debris, hose mishaps, car accidents en route... Yet despite all this the thrill and the satidfaction probably all make these risks worth it to save lives and frankly... be a friggin hero.
@@nodrogdivad my husband is in his 2nd year in our FD. The psi behind those hoses is absolutely no joke. A guy loses a line he better get it under control and quickly. And you are absolutely correct about the different dangers. I honestly almost worry about him more when he's responding to accidents than I do when he's responding to structure fires. It takes every ff on scene paying attention. One guy drops the ball and it all goes south very quickly. Situational awareness - location of power lines, propane tanks, adjacent exposures, etc. etc. Sorry to hear about your injury, I hope they can fix you up and get you back on the line.
Looks like another contractor screwed up. It looks like there was roof work going on with all the tarps protecting the outside edge of the roof façade. Probably was started by careless of a torch.

So glad everyone evacuated safely and all ffs returned safely!!!
IDEA!!!!! someone design a DRONE that the FIRE DEPT can fly!
This DRONE has a "GUN" that can be LOADED/RELOADED with "SMALL SHAPED CHARGE BULLETS"
This DRONE could then be flown into position where it could "remotely controlled SHOOT AT" and "blow inward" the screens and windows that can't be broken by water pressure alone.
As an example ... in this fire there aren't enough towers available in the right position due to the spread of the fire! As you can see, a water gun is
trying to break out windows that are high up, but the angle of attack is too great, consequently the water pressure doesn't break them!
Consequently they have to wait for fire to reach the windows from the inside and "burn them out"
It's sadly just a waste of valuable time, water, and property! I'm sure it's frustrating for the firemen as well.
I'm too damn old to design it or i would ! ! ! !
Or even better, put sprinklers in the building.
@@jmdelapp now we're talkin !!! that's the absolute best ... but you and i sadly know soooo many developers wont spend their money on having them installed and/or maintained. Sadly, the whole excuse for not having them is financial! I was in construction for over 30 yrs, and heard all their excuses. Even their vandalism excuse is financial based!
What ever happened to exterior fire escapes ... Interior Standpipes ... years ago they were required? Don't see them anymore!!!
2 floors destoyed by fire for sure ...but how many by water ? geh that hade to require so much water to put out. Dont tell me it all evaporate lol, yes I realize alot does.

Please tell us, WHO was living in this building? where were they employed? what do most of these types of fires have in common?
@SOUTH EAST ASIA GOING ASTRAY, as far as i can guess, people were living in that building, they probably were employed different places, and another thing that these fires have in common is that they burn things. What does it matter who was living there, and where they are employed, after all fires aren't particular about who or what they burn.

@@TonyAlessi6611 You know what they say Anthony - the camera never lies! Just review that video , and you will see the actual event - so we were both there!! ! You have to admit that you don't have to be a fully trained firefighter to see the event!
