I think when they say it will break or damage his soul, they mean his mental or simply his brain, like when he was kinda in a vegetative state in s1e15, since the physical aspect gets healed with RBD he should be able to bounce back ... in theory.

Well... if the WN post episode 13 witches tea party chapter had been adapted into the LN and anime, we would have learned that Echidna never intended to make a contract with Subaru, and essentially groomed him onto the path she desired. She used the other witches to accomplish this, and the other witches had agreed beforehand to this. Basically the entire last tea party was a spectacle orchestrated by Echidna. Additionally, the chapter questioned the «reality» of the other witches' existence. Their bodies were created by Echidna using their souls as a foundation, drawing out their reactions and personalities based on Echidna's endless knowledge. Echidna had a monologue in her head: «Are these witches, my friends, even real? Or are they just puppets and I'm simply playing dolls?» There was also pointed out the fact that these witches share Echidna's knowledge. So, if Echidna truly wanted to forge a contract with Subaru, she would not have instructed Carmilla to save his soul from shattering due to the 2nd tiral. It would have been easy for her to convince him to enter into the contract if he was mind broken. Moreover, she would not permit any other witches to disrupt her efforts to bind Subaru with a contract. Since she is the sole owner of this realm, and this world is fashioned from her soul.
