- In this Bodhrán Bootcamp I'll give you a super effective pattern to improve your sound on bodhrán, and to make your strokes clear and articulate - with no scratching sound!
I’m Ruairi Glasheen, and I’m a percussionist, composer and filmmaker based in London. I’ve been playing bodhrán since I was 4 years old and I simply love this instrument! Hi from Australia, I started learning the Bodhran a few years ago after seeing a demo at a big Scottish festival in Bundanoon NSW, but sadly a new neighbour in our flats hated my playing and complained vigorously. Fast forward 10 years (in my own home on a larger block of land) I came across your channel here on RUclips a few weeks ago and I felt a strange compulsion to dig my drum out of its hiding place and start my learning journey again. Thank you, Ruairi for sharing your talent and enthusiasm for this instrument. PS, I'm loving your Hidden Drum series.

Hi Sian! So glad to know you have picked it up again! I’m in Darwin and started playing the bodhran about 3 months ago. I have 2 bodhrans (16" & 18") and play them every day - I am fortunately blessed to have very tolerant neighbours hahaha! Ruairi’s videos are just the best - he’s a very talented teacher and makes it look so easy. His teaching style makes you feel like you CAN do ANYTHING if you put your mind to it. So glad to know there are other Aussies playing this amazing instrument. It so deserves to be recognised Down Under! 😁

I'm Australian, grew up in the folk music scene with my Irish immigrant mob - I never got to master an instrument and session with people because I was so devoted to my studies, but now that I'm graduating and my old folks are getting on, I'm getting back to basics. I'll finally be able to join everyone in a reel some day soon! Thanks for facilitating a gal's reconnection with her fam and soul.

Newbie from the US..This excercise should help me work out a problem i have noticed with accidently bouncing in unwanted beats that throw me off. I just finished my first week with the Bodhran. I've tried to play winds and strings without avail,but i think your technique might make a percussionist of me. Thank you!

Thanks Ruairi! This makes so much sense to me - I’ve often wondered why some tippers seem to be more "scratchy" than others. The angle of attack definitely makes all the difference! Looking forward to more Bootcamp! 😁

This is great :) Every time I do this exercise, there are fewer ugly scrapes and less 'missed' beats. It really highlighted that the up stroke is the real culprit so I can work on correcting that. Thank you so much!

I've been getting lessons with Colm Phelan, and I use an Eamon Murry tipper. I definitely find I can play clearer and faster with the tipper held at a 45 or 30 degree angle
How's it going, I'm new to the bodhán and I've watched a load of related content and just want to say thanks man, between yourself and Sifu Ó Snodaigh I don't need to look any further.
I've watched through all of both of ye're stuff but I'm not allowed play the bodhrán until Christmas so I'm using a pencil and copybook for now, just getting the feel of the jist like, and then in the new year I'll be rewatching them, working through them on the goat. I've had a bit of a fear of numbers my whole life, which kind of equated to a fear of percussion, just a kind of lostness with a touch of mild panic. Anyway, I can feel the fog of the fear lifting already, so, arís, go raibh míle mhaith agat.

Thank you for this. I am just starting to learn, and as soon as I began practicing I kept getting a lot of those scratchy strokes. This exercise is already making it sound better.

Hey, if can just try going to Mayapur (in Nadia, West Bengal, India), there is a traditional drum know as Mridanga / Sri Khol.
It blows off your mind. Give it a try.

Thank you so much for these nice exercices and for all this great content that you create on your RUclips Channel. I started practicing the bodhrán about a month ago, I didn't know how I could learn to play this beautiful instrument and then I found your wonderful and complete videos for beginners. I've been playing drums since last year but the bodhrán is a little bit different technique-wise. Plus, I have a Meinl Tipper with large ends and I feel sometimes that it's not really appropriate to begin with. Should I buy one like those you use with a straight end ? Ahh, so glad to hear the videos are a help and your enjoying your bodhrán playing! More on the way too, so keep an eye on my RUclips channel! For sure, the tippers with chunky ends can be a little bit clunky sound wise. Maybe try a few different types if budget allows, thinner tippers usually are the ones I prefer as you can get a cleaner stroke and play faster too! All the best, and have fun with the drum! Ruairi

Ruairi you rock, Your videos are fun and very informative. I do see see that you do not tape you bodhrans. My teacher suggested I tape mine to get rid of the too deep sound. Is there an alternative or have just going with the natural sound of the drum? Thank you

Hi ruairi! I was wondering if you had any tips for practicing bodhran in a house with roommates, or an apartment. Or really anywhere you need to be relatively quiet. Love the videos and documentaries. Thanks!
Try cutting a foam ring to slot inside the bodhrán to mute off the sound. Also, a regular drum practice pad with aa bit of shuffling around can work. You could also wrap your tipper with something to make a softer sound. Final thing you can do- listening practice! Listen to loads of traditional Irish music and focus in on the rhythm/backers - see if you can identify the type of dance pattern, and what pattern might be most suitable! Let me know how it goes!

Would an 18" tunable Roosebeck Middle Eastern frame drum be suitable for playing and getting this type of sound? I ordered one that hasn't shipped yet and I'm thinking I might be disappointed if it's too tinny and not rich-sounding enough. Love your videos! I'm looking forward to revisiting them when I'm ready to get playing! Thanks!
Great lessons! Thank you! I currently have a small, inexpensive bodhran and would like to get a deeper tone. Looking at the Brendan White models, would you recommend the 16 or 17", single skin, 5.5" deep model? Also, why get a double(or triple) skin? I plan to use primarily in the studio, where I record Celtic(and some cinematic) pieces. I play primarily Octave Mandolin. Thanks

I do make my own! I'm just finishing a batch for my website, which should go live next week. Exciting news about you Brendan drum, I just got another on Friday and LOVE it!
what about the dryness of the skin?should it be treated first? mine is as dry as a digestive thats been lying in an iraqi sand dune..45 degrees centigrade .. not angle.

Thanks for such great free lessons. Quick question .. you say set the metronome to 70 bps, but you are clearly playing faster than that .. are you playing four strokes beat ?
