Thank you for your excellent training content! I’m a lifelong drummer, recently commissioned to record lots of specific world percussion that I’ve never played, and your videos have really helped me get started.
So excited to find this video. I was given a Bodhran as a gift a few years ago because I love the sound of it so much. I finally got motivated to pick it up. I was able to get some decent sound out of it but when I went to look at how it was actually being played I was disappointed to find I was doing it wrong! Now, I realise that the videos I watched were the top end style you mentioned and what I was in doing was the Kerry style. It came quite naturally actually and I am thrilled. I hope that I will get comfortable enough to play it when I next travel to spend time with my Ceilidh loving family in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. At 67 years old it just goes to show you can teach an old dog some new tricks!
I picked this up accidentally when I first started learning - I found that if I held the tipper loosely in the middle, holding like a pencil, it’ll bounce itself into a triplet. Similarly to the end demonstration but without the whole hand gripping. In fact there’s fair distance between the palm and the tipper with my approach. I found you can do a really fast roll with this approach. I do use one of the classic tippers with a ball in each end (I think this one comes with lots of beginner bodhrans). Very much appreciate your videos! The photographic/cinematic quality is excellent too.
Really appreciate these videos Ruairi. I started bodhran this year, and you have been a really big help. 🎶💕 Playing along (well, trying to) to music I love has been keeping me sane through the lockdown. 😀
This has done a great job of breaking down the movements for using the back of the tipper! Feels a lot less unnatural to me now. Very informative and excellently presented video as always! Big thanks
Thanks Ruairi! Really loving the Bootcamp videos! Triplets were my Nemesis up until a short while ago, and this video has really cemented the technicalities for me. I really struggled with triplets/rolls for a while, but now things have just "clicked". Once I understood the movements, I found it very helpful to close my eyes and really feel what my hand/tipper are doing. Now I can crank triplets out really fast and find myself automatically adding them here and there when I play! Your videos have opened so many doors for me - and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that! 😁
Excellent stuff! I only started to learn a week ago, but your 'feel it out' approach had me 'playing' triplets in no time at all! I found that bringing the stick parallel, and allowing the stick to have it's own way was the answer. Great videos, thanks for sharing!
Thanks again, Ruairi, for another excellent tutorial. I think the second approach will work better for me. I've been following your lessons and returning to them since July. I have also been playing along to playlists I have put together on the three formats of jigs, reels and hornpipes. On another topic, I would have liked to see you drum longer on the Wellerman song.Your part finished too early. Best wishes, John
Clear and helpful (as usual) I can do this but I never knew how I was doing it. The parallel 'instinct' approach means that I might be better at controlling it :-)
Thanks for the video Ruairi, I would love to hear your opinion about traditional bodhrans vs modern bodhrans. I can't find any videos about this. I love the deeper sound of a more traditional drum.
Thanks Colm - for sure. Ultimately I think it comes down to individual taste, and I tend to prefer more traditional untaped drums myself. Each to their own, and I always encourage my students to try as many different instruments as possible and follow their ear ( and heart!) to choose which sound they prefer.
Im a string folky. Me and my partner have just started learning the bodhran. Really enjoy your video and style mate. You have a website or any online courses ? Many thanks Tom

Awesome, thank you! Yes, I do a 6 week online course and all the details are over on my website - happy practice! Ruairi
What is the best size to start with ?
The feel out approach seems to work! just hit it until something happens is my style 😄
Awesome! Usually one of the two approached does the trick 😉
Is there a way to do a triplet on the upstroke?
Cool
Hi Ruairi from Jamie Victoria Australia
Awesome! Thanks Kylie !
this is witchcraft! LOL another few weeks before I'll be even attempting this!
those fast triplets are like a helicopter
an-mhaith, go raibh míle maith agat
Tá fáilte romhat Gearóid 🙌
I want to see you go nuts on that tonbak behind you.
Thankyou ❤
