Hey! So, I have a '74 K20. I got it running, but it didn't have much power when I stepped on the gas. I thought I needed to adjust the timing and tweak the carburetor. I started with the HEI distributor, set it to top dead center, dropped the distributor in, and put the spark plug wires in the right order. But it's still not running right, even though I know there's spark and it's getting gas. It cranks but won't fire, and now the carb is spitting gas out the top.
Oh no. I would do standard tune up stuff like plugs and wires. I’ve had my truck run terrible and spent forever troubleshooting thinking my wires and plugs were good because I changed them a few months earlier. Once I put the new stuff on it ran great. Then get a rebuild kit for the carb before you spend a ton of money on a new carb. It should fire with spark and gas. That’s a cool truck. Good luck. sorry I’m not more help and thanks for watching!
@@TheStandOutdoors Thank you. I appreciate it. I just replaced the plugs and wires in it. Now i’m on the carb rebuild. Do you recommend taking it in to a shop or doing it myself
depends on how confident you are. Maybe ask a shop on how much they would charge you to do a rebuild your carb before you decide. Good luck@@lincolnbump5328
The power wire comes from the ignition switch when it is in the “on” position. In the old points set up that wire went from the ignition to a ballast resistor then the coil. The resistor and coil are deleted with the HEI set up and that wire goes directly to the distributor. There is a link for a pigtail in the video description for the HEI I used that I installed later. In the video I took that power wire from the ignition and ran to the “+” terminal on the HEI. Good luck with your build!
What firing order are you using - you said 1,8, etc. 351W has ALWAYS been 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8 was watching as I just switched to HEI on my 302 with Lunati cam which switched it to HO/351w order and threw me for a loop when you said that firing order.
Good catch. 18456273 is going clockwise looking at the distributor. Since the Rotor button is going counterclockwise, I should have said your way. Gonna work either way. I didn’t know 302s had the same firing order as the 351w. I guess the 302ho does according to google. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!
LMAO, I did not even realize that is what you did, I just heard you say 1,8 and was like WTF? I did see your plugs going 1,3 when you were setting it up so figured you said it or read it wrong. @@TheStandOutdoors
This whole video screams community college! 🤣🤣 I like it tho. Good job. I built full roll cage Chevy race cars 20yrs before I restored any fords, & it’s really funny to see you unbox your first hei distributor, like it’s the strangest thing in the world. lol. I really like this video.
Is this form Southwest Racing/A-team on Amazon? Ive seen that the roller pins are too weak and tend to break. I have one coming tomorrow and im going to drill it out and beef it up for prevention's sake. Just thought id ket you know.
HEI may be the greatest ignition out there (but it isn't) I would never put it on a Ford engine. Mostly because how damn big it is..... That's all that will be seen when the hood is open. My opinion.
They’re Hooker headers. Not sure the model cause it’s been 15 years. I think 6904. I did have to bash the drivers side a little for the frame. Good luck with your swap. The cheap HEI is still working good so I do recommend that unless you’re racing
It’s a comp cam don’t remember the number. A place called Carolina Machine Engines in Columbia SC did the short block back in 2006. This was the “choppy” version they offered at the time. Thanks for watching!
In the video comments there is an Amazon link to the pigtail power wire you need with the HEI distributor. It’s only $9 I think. I used 12ga wire to the pigtail. Thanks for watching!
I'm sorry, I should've been more specific. Where are you drawing your power from for the distributor? I saw to use the power wire from the coil since its not being used
Yes that’s right. The coil is deleted using the HEI. Use the hot wire that was going to the coil and run to the distributor. Also, no need to use a balast resistor on the hot wire. Good luck
Fighting with the points-type distributor over the years that’s just where the thing would drop down at. I just rotated the plug wires on the cap till the #1 wire sat where the button ended up. I realize it looks 180 degrees off tdc, but it’s not. My HEI is still doing good and seems to start quicker in the cold weather. Thanks for watching!
My truck runs best at 15 before TDC. Any less or more it starts breaking up at higher rpms with the spark advance from my old points distributer and the new HEI. I think it’s because of the choppy cam. I recommend experimenting with different offsets to see what’s best for your application. Thanks for watching!
I have not measured how many mpgs I’m getting but I assume it’s better because it runs smoother at all rpms now. It feels like it has more power whether it does or not I’m not sure.
18456273 counterclockwise on the distributor cap. Im backwards in the video because i was putting the wires on clockwise. Same either way. Thats for the 351w. A 289/302 will have a different firing order of 18736245 again counterclockwise on the cap. A 302 with a 351w cam may use the 351w firing order. If you got a small block ford try those 2 firing orders and see which one works. Thanks for watching!
I didnt know bill burr was a mechanic😂
Hahaha yeah thanks

Where did you get the power supply to the hei distributor from? I couldn't tell in the video 😢
The power wire comes from the ignition switch when it is in the “on” position. In the old points set up that wire went from the ignition to a ballast resistor then the coil. Just run a power wire to it to something that is powered on with key switch on.
As someone who has been through this before.
Offset air cleaner base!

I’m sure it’s the same Chinese company. It’s still running good. I’ll let you know if the gear falls off! Thanks for watchimg

You’re right. The distributor blocks the whole engine! Thanks for watching
I had to jb weld the gear on for some reason it came unattached
Oh no. Hope that holds up. Good luck
Have to ask, which headers did you use on that F100 chassis? I'm doing a swap to the 351w in my 78
They’re Hooker headers. Not sure the model cause it’s been 15 years. I think 6904. I did have to bash the drivers side a little for the frame. Good luck with your swap. The cheap HEI is still working good so I do recommend that unless you’re racing
@TheStandOutdoors I picked up the MSD Ready to go system, I still have to put the motor in and wait till the cab comes back from the body shop.
What kind of exhaust you running ??? And why not get HEI like on my 86 Ford F-250??? Mine looks a lot different.
Cherry bombs! I don’t know why that thing looks like that, but it’s been a few months and still working. Thanks for watching!
What cam is in that Windsor ?
It’s a comp cam don’t remember the number. A place called Carolina Machine Engines in Columbia SC did the short block back in 2006. This was the “choppy” version they offered at the time. Thanks for watching!
What part number did you order for the hei dizzy
Search the Amazon part number ASIN: B08DCF8HG9. Thanks for watching!
Im putting a 351w in a 75 4x4, what did you use for power wire for the distributor?

why is your rotor not pointed directly at the number one cylinder im curious

Worth it? Or no?
Still working after a month and seems to start easier in the cold. Thanks for watching
@@TheStandOutdoors nice, have you more mpg? And power? Or the same with breaker points?
I have not measured how many mpgs I’m getting but I assume it’s better because it runs smoother at all rpms now. It feels like it has more power whether it does or not I’m not sure.
Man I can’t find the right order for the wires for the life of me
18456273 counterclockwise on the distributor cap. Im backwards in the video because i was putting the wires on clockwise. Same either way. Thats for the 351w.
