Ocasek was a really great songwriter, Ben had a wonderful voice, the harmonies were soo seductive and the band were brilliant. They were near perfect.
You guys are so cool. I’m 65; it’s always fun to hear your reactions to music from my time. Love the Cars.
I was so glad I got to see the Cars back in the early days before Ben passed away
Rik Ocasek was an unpretentious Genius
Wife Speaking... The Cars were such an awesome "New Wave" "Synth" Rock Band..That Guitar is pure 🔥 along with that Basss pushing the entire song..All the layers of Guitar ..Awesome!!!..Great Reaction!!!
You guys are so funny!
Just FYI, it's pronounced, "okay-sik"
🤗🥃
He was brilliant and married to then super-model Paulina Poritzkova.
Actually it's O kay sik
It's actually O ka sik. That's how Ric himself pronounced it. Not o kay sik
@@bmak3337 Richard Otcasek became Ric Ocasek.
Rick Oh-KAY-sik
It’s actually oh-cah-sic y’all. Short ay sound. Like AH.
"Moving In Stereo", "Let's Go", "Just What I Needed", "You Might Think". A list of bangers!!
I was always a big fan of heart beat city. Mostly because I used to have a supervisor named Jacquie who was always late
Shake it up
Elliot Easton's guitar solo in "Just What I Needed" is one of the best 37 seconds ever
Brief explanation about the 80's. There was a completely new generation of kids and musicians who were so tired of the old burnt out classic Rock sound that dominated up until about the time this record came out; this actually one of the first "New Wave" (which would become Alternative Rock the following decade of the 90's) records to hit and set the trend in 1978. It sounded so different from everything else at the time except 'Punk' which is where it all originated; everyone wanted to sound completely different from anything and everything everyone else was doing and all those synths and electronics, and computers came around right at the perfect time.
Ryan..the "synth" or moog synthesizer is definitely an instrument. Its a keyboard instrument played by many great keyboard artists.Rock on..lol
I'm glad some people are figuring out that a good said of headphones makes a difference.
Maybe someday the young generation old figure out that music is much better when you don't listen to it in a deluded digital format.
This whole generation has been deprived and lied to about quality sound.
I was 21 when this song came out,so cool! So different!!
Yeah, boys! One slight thing, Ric's last name is pronounced "oh-CASS-ick"! Just for future reference! Do "Drive" next!
Their song "Candy-O" is the perfect mix of New Wave and hard rock.
ShooBeDoo seguing into Candy-O reminds me a lot of Suicide, which perfectly exemplifies your comment. x
Drummer David Robinson had been in another Boston band called The Modern Lovers who were led by Jonathan Richman.
Jerry Harrison, a Harvard student from Wisconsin, was a Modern Lover and later joined a trio of RISD students who called themselves Talking Heads.
"That guitar" is Elliot Easton. The guy is amazing (as you have duly noted), but, really underrated as many have previously stated. I say, underrate at your own risk.
The Cars were my jam back in the 70s. My daughter loves this song. They have so many good songs but my fav is Let's Go and also Dangerous Type.
Welcome to Gen X fellas 🤟🤟. Best decades of music ever ❤️. I enjoy watching you guys reacting to this incredible music & really appreciate it 🎵🎵
the entire album is AWESOME. Lead guitar player is amazing
Rick Okay Sick, that's how his name sounds.
Thanks for clarifying! I (Ty) was not sure on the pronunciation of Ric’s name!
Wrong. Ric pronounced it O-cass-ic. Not Kay-sic
Elliot Easton has a kick ass solo in almost every song.
That was just what I needed.
It has been a year, time to listen to them again, how about their best song "Bye Bye Love"!
The best of the Cars is Drive and Moving in Stereo!❤
Moving in Stereo/All Mixed Up sounds like it could have been done yesterday. Some more great Cars.
Agreed! My fav by them
🎯
The 70's were epic. Music now days is nothing like my rocking days.
I really like "Bye Bye Love ," and think you guys would ,as well .Didn't see any other suggestions for it..Trust me on this one. All the hooks ,melodies , synths , bass ,all of it .
Favourite song on this album
Bye Bye Love is still my favorite Cars tune.
The Cars were at the forefront of the merger of 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synthesizer-oriented pop that became popular in the early 1980s
The synthesizer just gives an amazing unique sound. It takes music to another level.
Loved these guys since the late 70's. Love them! Unique and amazing!
RIP Ben RIP Ric 🎸🎶🎵🌹
Listening to this on the radio driving to school, ahhh, those were the days!
I recall being in the back room at work in 2000 and hearing the announcement of the death of Benjamin Orr on the radio, and it was pretty damn depressing. RIP.
The entire debut album from The Cars is incredible, all classic songs.
In the 80s, we thought we were becoming science fiction and this sound made us travel. The drugs probably helped.
The Cars had lots of hits, and half of them ended-up on this album.
I can listen to The Cars' first two albums anytime. The group's sound is a perfect mix of oldtime basic guitar-driven rock sound and new wave synth. Add in Ric Ocasek's quirky but memorable lyrics and you have a unique sound. Elliot Easton is such an underrated guitarist. The self-titled debut album is an all-time classic. Let The Good Times Roll is probably the most basic song on the LP. Please listen to Best Friend's Girl and then the rest of the album. Candy-O is also a great album.
Totally agree, those first two albums are fantastic !
Elliott Easton is a "very" under-rated guitarist...
My 1st purchase of vinyl. Lets give love
Candy-O i need you?....
This aint that, but maybe yall will find my religion
Hey guys, they were very big here in Australia in the 70's and 80's. Cheers from Melbs, oz.
I grew up with this stuff! Try bye bye love. Thats my favorite. Here in Boston we had The Cars, Boston the band, Aerosmith, and J. Geils Band in the 70's. This was ahead of their time when disco and soft rock was out. It was a whole new sound.
best pop rock writers all time
The mixing. That’s why. Headphones.
Not just great music and musicians, but incredible production
Drive is another banger by The Cars that I absolutely love!
Love the Cars! Great reaction. If you ever react to "Drive", by the Cars, do the video. Trust me.
Gosh, I love the Cars!!!!
My Best Friend’s Girl was their first hit on the radio and everyone bought the album.
Second greatest debut album ever after Boston’s debut.
Listening back to this album now it's a greatest hits record unto itself... so good...
Might be the most underrated band to be in the rock and roll hall of fame!! Definitely one of them.
facts
The cars are drinking music every time I hear him I want to start drinking lol
Dangerous Type....favorite Cars song
Early synths were analog. By the mid to late 80's digital started to kick in....clear but cold. Analog is warm. As a keyboardist, always preferred analog over digital.
I saw the cars on their first tour and they were awesome.
Great music in those days , now there's so many groups of bands , the songs are just , I don't know , not the same , songs were longer in those days , I used to listen to the cars when I was a kid in the back garage fixing my bike , great musix
Live from the US festival 1983 is epic.
Greg Hawkes is a keyboard master👍👍👍👍🇦🇺
Great band I cruised to this music in my car back in the eighty’s and still do today!
Their first album can be considered a greatest hits album. That's why it's one of the greatest albums of all time it had a unique sound
Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up - two songs I still listen to over and over because they are such great songs!
The cars are great!!! Nice pic
I love me some Cars ❤️❤️❤️
Pretty much any song of theirs is great.
So Ryan likes sax, let's give the man some sax! I have a couple of suggestions--
- Tenth Avenue Freeze Out by Springsteen
It is just so bomb 💥💥💥
- Emotional Rescue by the Stones
It's the Stones, you'll love it. 🔥🔥🔥
Drive is my favorite song by them.
OH-KAA-SEKK (Ocasek) : - ) Thanks, guys!
Finally a reaction channel doing a Cars tune.
As Gregg Allman once said, to truly listen to music you need headphones. It's so true.
« Deceivingly great » - nice one.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, Ty, but Rick's last name is pronounced with the accent on the 2nd syllable, so it's oh-KAY-sic, not AH-ka-sic.
Hell yeah! Birchwood pool music. Sun, shades, and hot babes. Wooo!
Ric "0-K sick" Awesome band!
Thanks!
About the sound of the Synths. This recording was from 1978, when synths were still all Analog (as opposed to digital synthesis and sampling which came in the 80's). Analog synths have a warmer, organic sound.
I had a VHS tape of videos of all these songs. Gotvit in Japan. No longer have it and I'm sad.
I remember when the cars broke on the scene. They were a new sound versus the rock or disco songs popular at that time.
Another great upbeat synthesizer song from 3-4 years earlier is Loralei by Styx.👍
SYNTHESIZERS STARTED IN THE MID 70s ,,, NOT THE 80s
Lorelei is outstanding
I remember this summer well… 😁❤️
Brilliant assessment
Best first album, ever. Every track.
Another Group you guys might like from that era was Quarterflash. ~ Harden My Heart ......Ryan , they have a sax and Synth check them out
That's my favorite song by The Cars. I believe the lead singers last name is pronounced "O-Case-Ick". If you like 80's music, check out The Fixx "One Thing Leads to Another"
This WAS NOT the 80s though lol
You wanna hear something mind blowing Peter Frampton live only... Do you feel like we do!❤
Loving the SOAD tshirt! Grant band!
One of my favorite bands.
Love when you guys hit the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. In the name of everything holy, get yourselves some Steely Dan! Maybe start with “Black Cow” or “Peg.” You’ll love it.
Just for kicks, "Moving in Stereo" in headphones
80s synth was played by fingers on a keyboard. Modern synth is programmed into a computer.
80s synths were analog synths, nowadays they are mostly digital synths (except for Moogs)
Genius Roy Thomas Baker produced this album of genius musicians. That’s why the vocal harmonies sound like those of Queen, also produced by Roy.
I agree that I’m not sure why I like this song but I do 🙃
One thing different about The Cars is, though they produced music targeted at the young people of the time, both Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr were old for a band debuting their first album in June of 1978. Orr was a few months shy of 31 and Ocasek was 34 years old. Compare them to Def Leppard, who's debut album came out in 1980. The average age of the band members was 19. You guys should try "You might think" next. It won the MTV music video award in 1984.
Excellent choice. Lots of memories
The whole album is a classic🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🇦🇺🇦🇺👍
The Cars have a great library of tunes to choose from. I would love to see
I love you guys! Nick can you lay off the pause. 😬 i do love that you roll it back. You guys are my new favorites in reactionary videos, you guys really enjoy music. All individual in the best way yet you vibe together so well. You make me laugh. Your like happy bauble heads..love!! Keep it coming, your going to have a lot of subscribers.
I remember going to see them in Detroit in 1979....fourth row. Rick Ocasek had such an odd (but great) voice.
LOVE what you guys do...BUT...I have to do this...does Ty's grandmother know he made a shirt out of her best curtains? LOL
Saw them on this album tour, they opened for Foreigner
Like Andy & Alex say, this is one of those orange slice songs.
you've got to do The Dangerous Type and the Panorama/Candy-o combo, the songs fit together. This band blended so many good sounds together in each song only headphones can make you appreciate their great music.
Great song! I have this album on vinyl that I bought in the 80's!
the CARS and BLONDIE are side by each in late 70s /80s also DEVO and TALKING HEADS
First Cars song I heard was “Just What I Needed”. It’s on this same album and received most of the airplay at the time.
Pronounced Rick "oh-KAY-sick".
Saw them on this album tour at the Yale Bowel in New Haven CT.
Ric pronounced it Cass-ic
Good times Roll.. OK SICK
