Lovely craftsmanship again Sandy. You cant beat the smell of linseed oil takes me back to when my Dad used to fix a broken window (usually my football/cricket ball/airgun pellet lol)my job was to soften the putty .Looking forward to see what you produce for the knife show.

I'm actually picking up some linseed oil tomorrow mate and I 100% agree with you on carbon steel and wood. It takes a little more effort with the upkeep but that's all part of pride of ownership, and it has so much more character. Nice one Sandy

+Redpath Knife and Tool Thanks Dell,
Cactus juice is great stuff but it is not the answer for every knife. I finished an Oak scaled knife a couple of months back and the oil has hardened nicely now. It really is a beauty.

The effort you put into producing top quality Knives Sandy is, in my opinion, unsurpassed mate, many proud owners across the globe would agree, as I use Oak for my scales I'm going to look into and try boiled Linseed, at the moment I use Danish oil, and I like your ethos on producing some more natural/organic and traditional knives, some more lovely works of art for some excited buyers I see and the Tracker is a lovely smaller knife, oh and Google can be a wonderful thing for searching iff people used their common sense haha, EUROS ! no way, cheers mate, atb,.

Very informative especially re using linseed oil... I am just starting off and I am doing 6 months theory watching all your videos and others, gathering hand tools and bits before taking my first step of putting Oak scales on a ready made blade, finishing it to a good standard and making a sheath. Then one day make one from a piece of 01 to completion. Great you take the time to share your experiences and knowledge....Thank you!

Great knives as always Sandy - world class.
My knife was treated with linseed oil (before the advent of your resin process) and it's as good as new - I love it.
The other point about folk asking for a US dollar price is that from the time you quote it to the time the knife is built and the balance is paid the exchange rate could significantly alter - either way.

G'day Sandy. Thanks for another great video. Regarding your comments about Americans.. wow I need be careful here. My experience working with (mostly military) Americans is that they are, very smart, very intelligent people. They seem to be very driven by this online consumer market. The UK has a lot to be proud of but the country has become sissified. Here in America I can walk down the street with a knife or gun and protect myself, dont even try it there even if they break into your home.

did you know you can use 1 part beeswax,1 part linseed oil,1//2 part turpentine,to waterproof you boots . heat up beeswax in a pot, after its melted mix in the linseed oil and turpentine. it will turn in to a paste after cooling. apply with cloth or paint brush, the smell or turpentine will go away after a short time. this recipe is from the 1800,s .trappers used it.

Hi Sandy, very interesting about the linseed oil. Have you thought of placing finished knives in a linseed oil bath and pulling a vacuum on them, essentially stabilising them with the oil, for better penetration of oil into the wood. Something else that you could think about is dissolving some shellac into the oil and then pulling the vacuum. Should help the solidification process.
French polish is an intense polishing with a solution of linseed oil, shellac and methylated spirit. Would be a brilliant, renewable finish for the knives.
And I believe that a word you were looking for to go along with organic is "tactile". Feels better in the hand. More natural.

Have you ever tried to use the linseed oil in your stabilizing vacuum? If the linseed oil polymerizes and gets in that deep it seems it would be great at keeping moisture out. I'm guessing the epoxy wouldn't adhere to that too well so you'd have to do finished knives for this to work out, which may be prohibitive, but I'm making just couple knives for myself and it may be feasible for me. I've really been enjoying, and learning from, and applying all the information you have in your videos by the way. Soon enough I'll be tempering a couple knives I've made and putting the scales on and I'm sure they're quality is orders of magnitude better quality than I could have made without your help. Thanks.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but would there be any benefit of putting a finished knife with a non-stabilised oak handle in your vacuum tube along with the linseed oil? Just to get good penetration of the oil.
I don't know if it would work, or if it would deform the fitted scales.
Maybe if it was only in there for a few minutes or something.
    Just an idea!

    • @Jackloreknives
      @Jackloreknives  8 лет назад

+magicdrshoon Thanks I have tried that but not sure such a thorough penetration is required. A 16 hour soak seems sufficient.

Just a thought Sandy (or anyone else)..... any thoughts on stabilising the Oak using your vacuum system using Linseed oil rather than Cactus Juice? I would think this could only be done on a completed knife as the glue may not work well on oily Oak. Maybe just a short period rather than 24hrs?

+Jackloreknives Rule of thumb from old loggers on linseed oil for axe handles is.... once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month for a year.

Sandy, how do you finish your Cocobolo handles. Do you soak in or use Linseed Oil, Tung Oil or do you simply polish the handles given the wood is already oily. I read somewhere that cocobolo also doesn't require stabilisation due to its inherent dense properties. Have you had any success with stabilsing this wood.

U make really nice knifes. It’s sad that u can’t translate currency for your friends across the pond. We have excellent knife makers in the USA and we’ll spend our money here.

It's also sad that some folk from other parts of the world can't translate currency themselves by using google currency converter. It's called "self help". There are people not just from across the pond but elsewhere in the world and it is not feasible for me to do the conversions for all.
You buy your knives from US makers if you want. There are some awesome makers over there.

Agree completely with the stabilisation it's a good thing but it does feel that 01 and wood that is just oiled go together . Do u think your old way of stabilising with wood hardener would have a better result with oak or pulling a vacuum with the oil ? I love looking after my jacklore oiling the blade after use its part of buying a one of a kind knife .made me laugh at the end of the vid very dry atb scott

+Scott Fisher Hi Scott. I have pulled a vacuum on the oil in the past but dont think it is really needed. Like you say, caring for your knife is part of the fun of it.:)
