From my experience with fig trees, figs get better every year and they continue improving in flavor qualiy until the tree is like 15 years old. Probably the first years your smith didn´t taste so well... For that reason you can't really judge a fig until the tree is fully grown. Specially when the weather is sunny and dry, the figs are incredible. That´s why they work so well in the Mediterranean.
Store bought fruits aren’t even worth it once u have tasted the amazing quality of home grown fruits, I’ve really gotta try to get a persimmon tree, I’m ready to dive into the persimmons
i have 15 trees of smith and totally agree ..and it keeps well in the refig which i think is really important...
Hello Ross 👋 so good to hear that you are spreading you beautiful figs all over ! Can't wait to check it out !
Agree! Even out here in SoCal where we are lucky to pretty much be able to grow any of the top varieties, Smith consistently is one of the best. Caprified or un-caprified. A must have.
Thanks to your recommendations I have one of these growing in ground this year.
It is really taking off now. Should get a dozen figs or so. It sees full sun from sunrise until sunset.
The only two other trees I put into the ground were Italian 258 and Peters Honey.
My other 25 trees are in large containers on drip but deeply mulched so I rarely water
The vid sold me, I purchased one of your Smith trees. Looking forward to the new addition.
Thank you!
I think the flavor of smith resembles star apple, not the texture but the flavor. 🤤
How long do you keep your trees in those black pots?
Smith is my wildcard here in the PNW. Very vigorous growth and healthy looking in ground.
What zone in PNW? I ask because my son is in Seattle
@@flash_flood_area 8b puget sound region but ive got 9a plants surviving our winters which convinced me to give smith a good spot in the line up and hope the gods share the fruit.
@@alwyzDTF Interesting. Thank you! Good luck 🌱
Someone in your comments recommended Smith for zone 9b (low desert in AZ). Would you agree?
It's well adapted.
Grate video, I have a first year smith. is it uncommon for it to not produce figs the first year? Thanks
Mine didn’t produce the first year or two but now it’s producing heavily.
@@ronnie5151 thanks!
Typically doesn't produce right away.
Is there a fruit on your salavatski pomegranate or did i see wrong?
You saw right. I'll update everyone when it ripens.
Is it possible to buy this fig in Europe? I live in the Netherlands and have never seen Smith at any of the nursery's.
That's the problem. There's 3 figs commonly found in the US that are incredible and almost impossible to find anywhere else. Smith, black Celeste, hative d'argenteuil.
Smith is available in Europe. I have it. Best bet is to get on the European Figs Facebook page, plenty of sellers there.
Is this fig good for zone 6?
In a container.
Smif do be good doe
I bought a Celeste from a local nursery, it’s not specific on the label, is Celeste and black Celeste the same?
It's not.
Thanks
@@RossRaddi Hi Ross, My question & answer got deleted that you answered already if you could only choose 2 dark figs which would they be I remember only black Celeste, I live in North New Jersey
@@hamitfusha710 Black Celeste, Azores Dark, Rossellino, Moro de Caneva.
@@RossRaddi Ross I’m very new to this where can I buy these fig’s ?
I’ve checked the internet , all I see is out of stock on anything than common figs.
