    Good review (as always). As an A6 owner, it's always interesting to me to see what reviewers pick up and what they don't cover. That's not a criticism, just a reflection that it's such a feature packed device that any review that tried to be exhaustive would likely end up five hours long. One thing I would pick up on though is that, when you say the A6 can't act as a USB bridge, that's not *entirely* true. While the USB-C audio input won't provide a digital signal out via the SPDIF outputs, the USB-A OTG port does, so you can hook up a PC, CD-R drive, bluetooth dongle or similar to that port, and get a coax or toslink output to a DAC successfully should you need to.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Год назад

      That's interesting. Thanks for the tip. So, are you saying that you can run a USB-A to USB-A cable from a computer to the A6? I didn't even think to look into that

    • @portnaluinge
      @portnaluinge Год назад +2

      @@PassionforSound Ah, it turns out I may have spoken prematurely. I’d only personally used that port to connect a CD-ROM drive and confirmed that it provides a digital out of CDs to an attached DAC. The manual states you can attach a PC that way too, but when I just tried it myself it seems it only provides file access to the PC, not a direct audio connection (so the A6 sees the PC’s HD in the same way it’s see the files on an attached USB drive). My bad, sorry. Still, something else to experiment with.

    The best part of this review was the comparison between the USB DAC interface and streaming. I've run similar tests on my system and found that the sound when connecting the PC via the XMOS USB interface is definitely less pleasant. Running the same tracks (from Qobuz) via Bubble UPnP and USB highlighted the differences with Bubble sounding better. Then I swapped Bubble out for Audrivana Studio (in Kernel Mode) via UPnP and the sound had more definition and warmth.

    Thank you for such detailed and informative review. My last decision factor is the digital output. It’s been said that when using external apps like Apple Music on A6. The quality is less the using built in app. So there may be a difference in quality from both units in digital outs.
    If you ever find the time to investigate this matter it will be very much appreciated to know your findings.

      Not sure if this answer the question but I have heard in multiple reviews that using the native app, meaning the Eversolo app, gives better audio quality than using an external app via UPnP. So I stream using the integrated Tidal support from the Eversolo rather than the Tidal app using Tidal connect.

    • @PassionforSound

      That's quite likely true about the native app working better than UPnP which might be using a different transmission protocol.

    I'm actually running the A6 into a Z8 (then into a Denon preamp that yes does ADC for room correction then DAC again, don't care sounds better). You can call it a 5 percent difference, but I can't unhear it. Soundstage goes wide and detailed with the Z8 in the chain. Didn't intend to keep them both, but here we are. I hoped to make digital streaming sound as good as my vinyl getup. I'm very pleased with this arrangement.

      I'm afraid I can't as I don't have a suitable RPi setup at the moment. You'll probably find a slight improvement from the DMP-A6 due to the overall quality of its circuitry and the fact that it's optimised for audio, but that's just an informed assumption.

    It would be good to do a review against fancy expensive streamers like Lumin or Auralic, as a streamer only (so digital out, not XLR), is there any audible difference.
    Also, think A6 is streamer first, meant to be used with an external DAC, and most if not all reviews are mostly talking about its DAC sound. Eversolo has Z6/Z8 which are DAC first, so much better option.

    • @PassionforSound

      I agree that this is streamer first, but many will use it with the internal DAC so it's important to consider that way.

      Adding a Chord DAC will be a nice upgrade. How you connect it isn't particularly important as you'll get great results via any protocol. I'd base the decision on whatever cable quality you have available so a good USB or coax or optical cable will all work better than a crappier alternative.

    As I understand it, the standard DMP-A6 uses OPA1642 op-amps, while the Master version uses OPA1612. Which may or may not be a very significant upgrade? I think the clock chips are the more important upgrade?

    • @PassionforSound

    As always very very nice reviews. Just wondering, because you are a fan of chord products as wel. How does it perform using usb out / or coax out to a chord dac like the qutest/tt2 ? Is the digital out any good? You talked about a master version with better clocks? Would that matter using a external dac?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  11 месяцев назад

      The DMP-A6 is great with the TT2 & M-Scaler so should be equally good with the Qutest. I run the SPDIF coax from the DMP-A6 to the M-Scaler BNC input.
      As for any impact from the Master version's better clocks - I don't know the answer to that because I'm not certain if the clocks are involved in the handling of the incoming streamed data and its output as a different digital signal. I imagine there could be a level of improvement though.

      @@PassionforSound In a recent blind test, the Volumio Primo outperformed the A6, as reported by a RUclipsr (ruclips.net/video/tQVrZOmLLkE/видео.html). This assessment is based on group listening rather than the RUclipsr's personal opinion. When using the native control app, the Volumio Primo produced a more holographic and expansive soundstage with a three-dimensional soundscape compared to the A6. Another RUclipsr, iiwi, shared a similar observation (ruclips.net/video/IrL5trV_tJ4/видео.html). Primo has fuller body, more separation and layering but A6 is not lean or bright by any means.
      It's important to note that the comparison with the Primo involved both the digital transport and the DAC, whereas the comparison with the Rivo focused solely on the streamer. Additionally, when the Rivo was powered by an LPS (linear power supply), these differences in sound quality were even more pronounced.

    Lachland I was waiting for your review of this product and as usual, a great review . Very informative and useful to people who may be interested in the Eversolo DMP-A6 and everyone else too I’m sure.
    This past July I took the plunge and upgraded my Hi-Fi system after months of researching much equipment, following a variety of RUclips reviews for speakers, integrated amps, power amps, headphone amps, streamers, etc. I think it got to the point were I got information overload…. But finally once I settled on the speakers I needed (bookshelf DALI Menuet SE and KEF KC62 subwoofer), all the other equipment choices were easier: a NAD M10v2 integrated amplifier and streamer, a Lake People G108 headphone amplifier and the Eversolo DMP-A6 to use primarily with the Lake People G108 headphone amp and these two devices I connected through the balanced XLR connectors. I also connected the Eversolo DMP-A6 to the NAD M10v2 through the single-ended RCA connectors and also using the digital COAX connectors. I can’t hear any difference if there is any, in sound when the music is routed through either of the two outputs but then, I’m not an audiophile so who knows. The overall conclusion is that I am very happy with the quality of the sound coming out of my headphones when listening through the Eversolo DMP A6 and G108 hp amp setup (which is primarily how I intended to use the Eversolo) or when sitting in my living room and listening through the NAD M10v2 and speakers system.
    Both the Eversolo DMP-A6 and NAD M10v2 are very good streamers. I would venture to say that the very good BlueOS streamer may have more features than the Eversolo but the Eversolo DMP-A6 streaming management “skills” are superior.

I can use Amazon in 2 different ways: in the Streaming menu I can run Amazon Music clicking on the icon in the Music Services section; or I can run it by another icon in the Music Apps section. I find the user interface much better if I run Amazon Music as a Music Service, but the sampling rate is normally 44.1KHz. If I run it from the Music Apps section, the user interface is not as good as the other, but the sampling rate reaches 192 KHz and I have the impression that the audio quality is slightly better. Why this difference between the 2 modes? Is there a way to configure the device in such a way to have the highest sampling rate also running Amazon Music as a Music Service? Thank you!

      That's really interesting! My guess is that the second approach is delivering either the bit perfect version or it's being resampled in the application. The only thing I can suggest is to check the settings options in each version of the app and see if you can choose the quality level being streamed.

    Not sure I agree with ability to have multiple audio outputs enabled concurrently as a problem. Some audiophile components specifically have features to disable unused components and disable display to reduce potential interference or impact to audio.

      1. I have Plexamp installed on mine and it runs like a boss. It's not one of the whitelisted apps, but the A6 allows easy side-loading of Android apk files, which is how I installed Plexamp.
      2. It can act as a NAS using the inbuilt SSD slot, but a Synology or similar still offers better functionality for that stuff.
      3. There is indeed a USB audio output to connect to an external DAC. Works perfectly.

    I've had the DMP A6 Master Edition for 3 or 4 days at this point & I'm loving the device overall.
    ....but....
    It's SOOOOOOO picky about ripping CDs. I have a brand new $180 Pioneer external disc drive & a stack of unscratched/unflawed CDs....and the Eversolo simply will not rip about 1 in 4. I have no idea why. I have no idea how to do a "work around" for it. It just sorta is what it is.

      Sorry to hear that! I haven't played around with ripping, but that would be frustrating. Perhaps try ripping them securely on a computer first and then transfer them over. It's less convenient, but might be more efficient in the long run.

    I want to get into network streaming. I really like the idea. That being said, how quickly is a network streamer likely to become somewhat outdated or obsolete? Seems anything digital evolves at lightning speed and the next thing is just around the corner. Any insight on how to manage expectations, especially in the price range?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  9 месяцев назад +1

      That's a great question!
      The reality is that two things tend to change. Firstly, the streaming services available and the apps required to use them. Thankfully, this is firmware/software related so can be easily updated without changing the device.
      The second area is technology like DAC chips. The good news here is that the shifts in DAC tech are WAY overstated in most cases. For example, going from an ES9038Pro chip to an ES9039Pro chip doesn't really make a significant sonic difference. It might shift the specs from 0.0007% THD to 0.0006% THD, but that's all inaudible anyway. We have been lucky enough to have a couple of excellent DAC chip shifts recently with the Cirrus Logic OCTO approach in the Topping D70 Pro and the new AKM AK4499EX + AK4191EQ combo setup that's popping up everywhere, but they are the first truly meaningful shifts in many years IMO.
      What all this means for us as listeners is that you can pretty safely buy anything with a DAC inside it and know that it's not going to be superseded in a meaningful way anytime soon. However, if you want extra security, buying separates is always a good idea. This means getting a device to use purely as a streamer and a separate device to use purely as a DAC. That way, you can swap out the DAC if you ever feel the need.

      Follow-up question. For context: I have powered studio monitors, and as such would like to remove the integrated amplifier from the equation. That being said, I have a turntable that I want to continue using. Can the DMP-A6 accommodate that? My turntable has a USB-B out, and the DMP-A6 has a USB-C in. However, I read that the USB protocol on the turntable may not be compatible with the DMP's USB protocol. As such, I would require some acrobatics to get that done. Alternatively, would I somehow have to keep my integrated amplifier in the fold and use its RCA Preamp Out to one of the inputs on the DMP (coax or optical or USB)? I understand the DMP-A8 is also a preamp, but it's literally twice the price. @@PassionforSound

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  8 месяцев назад

      There's no way I can think of to integrate the turntable if the USB connection won't work. You could look at removing the integrated amp and replacing with a simple preamp with phono stage if that could work for you. (I'm not familiar with these products enough to recommend one - sorry)

      @@PassionforSound Thanks for the compliment. Is an Audioquest Carbon USB A to B from the A6 to the EF600 also ok instead of the coaxial option? I also notice that when I select USB DAC in the output port of the A6 that there still is a volume slider from 0-15 . Is there a way to turn this off in its entirety or do you always have this volume on in addition to the volume of the EF600?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  11 месяцев назад

      A USB connection will do well too. The USB out of the A6 seems pretty solid.

    • @DJTHEFONZ
      @DJTHEFONZ 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@PassionforSound You are right. You are talking about the volume passthrough mode I guess. Thing is when I set this setting to on in the setup menu the volume on the EF600 is already really loud at 20-25% in low gain. Is that a problem? I mean you have not much gain left. When using the digital volume of the Eversolo (at volume 10) you have more gain room at the EF600. The volume of the EF goes to about 50% to get loud. Do you think the digital volume will affect the end result of the sound of the EF? Last question . Would you recommend the Supra Excaliber USB cable in this set up or the Audioquest Carbon USB? Or do you always prefer the coax?

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  11 месяцев назад

      There should be no issue using the digital volume control if you need a bit more wiggle room from the EF600.
      I haven't directly compared the USB and coaxial outputs from the A6 so I don't know how they perform exactly. The USB is very good though so using it will be fine.
      As for your cable choice, both options are excellent so if it were me, I'd just go with the one you are more drawn to and/or whichever is cheaper.

      It has a really fully functioned app for remote control, which is AMAZING in cast mode. And there's also a small bluetooth remote you can buy as a (very inexpensive) add on.

      Yes, it's clearly more than a Raspberry Pi setup or similar, but the interface is a big differentiator from any of the cheaper devices I've found.

    Best ever? Of course its not, not even close. Is it good value for money, absolutely.
    I recently spent 2 weeks with one setting it up for a friend whos not to tech savy. Its a capable box, and it sounds great. However, it was a relief to return to my Auralic G1 and experience the extra naunse and detail that unit retrieves via the same dac.
    We are not even looking at the higher models available here and I suspect there are many such units that comfortably outperform the A6 as long as you are prepared to pay for it.
    Best? Not even close.

      I thought the auralic Aries g1 is rubbish for the money, so did another reviewer I know. That’s why I’d never bother with Uber pricey streamers. In fact one reviewer I know gave back the £2k ish lumin u2 mini as not as good as an old £500 Aries mini. Then the same lumin went to an establishment reviewer in the uk who said it’s fabulous. Lol. Steve Huff thought this eversolo sounded as good as the u2 mini on really good dacs in his video review. I struggle with how peoples own owning of gear sways their perceptions in hifi so as not to be an affront to their buying. The truth normally comes from people who do not care at all what is or isn’t better, who are prepared to be self critical of own gear and so have no bias or motives to rate or not rate products. That’s where I look and take proper information….rather than just ‘Jim told me’ type approaches.
      Also the idea people say not even close is a concept that just doesn’t exist in hifi in the real world. Most hifi is close even sometimes with wild price differences. It’s just where you look and who you believe

    Eversolo is a very nice looking unit but take away the fancy screen and it's no better than the new WIIM Pro Plus and with $500+ in savings you can upgrade something else in your system.

    • @PassionforSound
      @PassionforSound  Год назад +8

      That may be true - I'd have to compare their sound, but some people need the screen and the Wiim Pro can't store the files locally (AFAIK) or operate as a USB DAC, and it's not balanced (for those who care). I think there's plenty of value there for those who need it.

    • @RickyBobbyGetEm
      @RickyBobbyGetEm Год назад +5

      Balanced outputs might be important for some people, though. The day WiiM makes a balanced version of the WiiM Pro with HDMI Arc input, there will be no reason to ever look at another streamer ever again 🤣

      I think you're still oversimplifying things. The Wiim Pro would work great for me in the living room, but wouldn't suit my office because of the other lacking features.
