I really like his approach to this subject.
"Here's what this glass is traditionally used for and why. "
" Here's my opinion on what might be better for the type of wine you're serving. "
" None of these are essential to enjoying a good glass of wine. "

IIRC a Chinese team did scientific research into different glass shapes. I think they included thermal imaging into that. One important aspect they report is that alcohol vapor sticks to the glass's wall, so the shape and diameter of a glass with the diameter of the opening influence what we smell (=80% of what we call "taste").

I worked in a winery in an relatively unknown region for a while, and I could always tell that when a “pretentious wine person” came they wouldn’t like our wine simply because they already made up our their mind. But our wine was pretty objectively excellent (as much as wine can be objective), competing with many well known regions. Wine people like Andre get so much more out of wine because they’re willing to explore and leave behind the BS.

Needless to say, we were both pretty excited by the idea of drinking wine out of a glass with no stem and what he said was spot on. For some psychological reason, drinking wine out of those glasses do feel more casual and its a go-to for me now. If you drink wine on the reg, you should get yourself a set! Loved this video! And love the freedom and idea that sometimes the best glass to drink out of is the one that you enjoy the most! I drink all my wine out of various shapes of funky handblown glassware made by my friends company and whether its a $15 bottle of $80 bottle of wine it still feels luxurious and enjoyable either way because of that.

I love stemless glass for the same reason you mentioned. Riedel's "O" Glass is just perfect.

Great video good information. We love the casual stemless quality glasses. My wife tends to tip over the stemware. We call those the big girl glasses. She’s only allowed those on special occasions.

Love how he subtly pointed out how almost no wine pros use champagne flutes for actual champagne. Use it for other bubbles, but not Champ.

Nice Andre, I totally agree about changing the glass at dinner changes the ambiance and expectations. But my goodness, I really dislike drinking bubbles out of a flute...

I had the good fortune to take a "glass" tasting glass with Herr Riedel. We poured different wine into different shaped glasses and learned that at times a good wine in the wrong glass can really ruin the flavor. I do drink pretty nice wines sometimes so I have Pinot, Bordeaux, white wine and Champagne flutes. And I agree that for the best Champagnes I get out the white wine glasses.
