- If you’ve had the privilege of tasting one you already know - a properly aged wine transforms not unlike how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. On this edition of World Of Wine expert sommelier André Hueston Mack tastes a Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon at 5 different ages, from a recent 2016 vintage all the way back to a 1978, commenting on how and why the aging process affects every aspect of enjoying a wine.

Sommelier Tastes the Same Wine at 5 Ages (1978-2016) | World Of Wine | Bon Appétit - Развлечения
"were not wine snobs, just nerds" i absolutely love that.
Unlike Frasier and Niles with their wine club and running for Cork Master 🤣😂😂
I love this way of thinking. Why be called a snob when you're just passionate?
@@braxave Social construct. Just like when people think "elevating" their palet to enjoy red wines is an achievement. You are born with a preference, dry or sweet. I tell people on a daily basis that they should never be ashamed of liking a sweet wine. After all, the most prestigious wines for hundreds of years were sweet wines.
It's always a perception thing. I think knowledge and appreciation at a high level can only resonate with people who have a similar passion for whatever. Whether you are a car guy, guitar player, wine connoisseur... It doesn't matter. That passion can be interpreted as snobbery by people who just don't get it.
At the end of the day, all of us have a thing that we love and pursue, and that's pretty cool.
Wine nerd is good. Beer nerd is obnoxious.
Give André his own show, this is top notch content.
Do you mean in addition to this show, which is already his own show?
@@expertmusicmedia2140 Yes, like a dedicated weekly show like Rie
Is this not what that is
this is his own show. it's called "world of wine"
Give my man the big Netflix bucks!!!
He was really bummed about that 94. That’s a true nerd right there.
i just started to get into wine and i was super bummed i didn't get to see him try it, real shame it was corked.
The color of that 94 was absolutely gorgeous.
@@bobbyhempel1513 Yeah! That’s the one I was looking forward to the most.
@@HonJazzz It's a perfect YT Short idea- finally tasting the '94.
It's excellent exposure for your series, since ppl find new channels through browsing YT Shorts content all the time.
@@bodyofhope Yeah, good idea 👍🏻
I like the fact he really did come around like a nerd rather than a snob, very personable, loved the video!
What’s wrong with being a snob? What does that even mean?
@@gaving9463 generally its a term for being pretentious and douchey, it was a compliment dudes really fun to watch, go find something else dumb to be mad about lmfao
@@gaving9463 a snob is obnoxious and condescending when explaining anything
@@dannuman6510 ya I don’t know why wine people have that connotation around them. It’s annoying
@@gaving9463 pretentious
I could listen to Andre for hours, he needs his own series or show where he travels around the world and visits wineries!
Look up a show called Three Sheets
I love him too!!!
Definitely
I’d be first in line to subscribe
Yea Andre’
You could hear the devastation in his voice after finding out the '94 bottle is cork tainted.
Right? I felt so bad! I was almost hoping they could get another bottle for him to try
I love the teacher in him where he encourages everyone at the very end to smell it and learn what it means for a wine to be corked.
I once opened four BV George de la Tour 1994's in a row all were tainted
Unfortunately I know how it tastes as well.
Andrew Waterhouse, professor of wine chemistry at University of California, Davis, says you can remove cork taint by pouring the wine into a bowl with a sheet of polyethylene plastic wrap. The 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (responsible for cork taint) will stick to the plastic. The process is effective within a few minutes!
Andre seems like a kind of "down to earth" kind of guy, rather than a "wine snob." He tells you to drink what you like. I like him.
Drink him!
I haven't seen a wine snob in my entire life instead of a cartoon once and Frankly you probably haven't also seen one, why do wine lovers have connotation with them?
I think most sommeliers are just certified nerds, the snobs are random people who think they’re professionals and try to compensate for the fact they’re not by pretending to be better/ one upping others
I don't drink wine, but I found this very enjoyable and interesting. Can definitely tell he's very passionate about his wines. The sadness in his voice after finding out the '94 wine was spoiled was definitely palpable.
I wasn't a wine drinker either, but after trying many different wines I developed a love for it. I'd suggest trying a variety of different cheap wines before saying you're not a wine drinker. Even cheap wines of different varieties can provide interesting flavors and experiences.
@@yunggoosbumps215 I lack the stomach for the pretentious aspect of it.
bruh PAIN
@@TheSuperRatt You don't have to be pretentious to enjoy something buddy, I don't enjoy that aspect either but you don't have to see it.
I don't earn that much, just enough to get by, and it took me a while to get into wine, because there is cheap wine, and there is CHEAP wine. Even at the same price ranges you can find some disgusting artificial grape flavored juice with some alcohol in it, and other wines that actually taste like wine, even if it ain't anything elegant.
Took me a while to find not only the brands, but the types of wine of specific brands I like, and It really became something I really enjoy to drink.
My favorites are malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvingon, and petite syrah guy if anyone's wondering!
André: look at the color and hue difference
Me: *pretending to see what he's talking about*
Dont worry, some people don't have the eye for color, I don't
“Ah, yes. Brickish indeed!”
I can easily see the brick color of aged wine in real life, but it was hard to see in the video. I think the light and/or color grading of the production made it less obvious.
It literally looked like the same thing lmfaooo😭😭😭
@@jacob2338 Nah, they didn't, the aged one had an orange tint, like brandy.
I learned about wines getting "corked" the hard way. Back in the early 1990's, I was gifted two bottles of very nice Barolo (Pia Cesare I think). When we finally decided to drink them 20 years later the first one we opened was awful. Definitely corked and smelled like moldy shoes. The second one, however, was perfect and one of the best bottles of wine we've ever had.
It's interesting that the 1994, which was "corked," was the bottle with the wax top, and also the bottle whose cork broke when being removed. It also shows up (at 1:54) as the least expensive of the older wines. I wonder if that means that it's known to have multiple corked bottles. Andre said it was the greatest vintage of his lifetime for Napa wines (how disappointing he didn't get to taste it!), so it's surprising it should be less expensive than the other older wines. Anyone know why that is?
@@TomD67 Of course it's a person thing. When you have a look at vintage charts you notice that all of the vintages in this video are exceptional. Maybe this specific wine is known for bad corks in 1994 and therefore you need to buy 2 bottles to get one that isn't corked?
@@TomD67 I don't think that corked 94 is indicative of its pricing; just bad luck.
Although 94 was a very nice growing year in Napa Valley, 2007 was even better. Interestingly, 1985's season wasn't nearly as good as 94 or 07 but its wines are still youthful and evolving and can be aged longer. The 94 on the other hand is an early maturing wine and ready to drink now, if not passed its peak. All of these aspects along with scarcity will factor in to its pricing.
Good thing you got 2 bottles then!
I would love to try Barolo. Keep hearing about it a bit fromall the connoseurs
His reaction to the '78 is priceless. It hit him like a ton of bricks and was almost overcome with emotion. Would love to see much much more of this content!
Best part is how happy and excited he gets. I demand retribution for 1994 though, he was so bummed it was corked. We need a best vintage year series.
I love him . He’s unpretentious.
As he put it, a "nerd" not a "snob!"
Exactly. He strikes a good balance between educating those new-ish to wine and talking to the wine nerds.
He just loves wine. It's as simple as that.
You know he's a pro when he's doing a five red wine taste test wearing a white shirt!
Yes, because everyone else will always spill their food or drink down their clothing like some kind of toddler 🙄
@@mydogeatspuke it's literally alcohol and alcohol makes people sloppy and clumsy so yeah
@@BlazRa well it certainly isn't figuratively alcohol, is it? And 4 sips is not enough to get so sloppy that you spill on yourself. Don't be so absurd.
You’ve completely missed the joke, gg
@@danj.p5657 there is no joke to miss....
Love when he gives 80 precise descriptions of flavor then says the experience is "good shit" 😂
unfortunate abt the corked wine, but i really did enjoy how he described it & how he could immediately tell what happened; that's an expert in his craft right there. love this guy, would love to see more of him!

I love Andre's approach. He should have his own show. I've been a sommelier for over 20 years and his insights are spot on and very comprehensible. Great job!
Forgive my ignorance but is that a full time job or just something you do part time?
@@paawan3764 usually it’s a full-time job, you might be working, for example, for a restaurant and not only serving the clients, but making a menu, purchasing wine etc

Andre is absolutely the best addition to he channel in a long time. That isn't to put the others down, he is just great. He is a wine guy who isn't pretentious and douchey.
He really is just the "nerd" he talked about and not at all as hard to listen to about so many wine people. He really gets me interested in wine.
This guy is the best wine expert I have ever heard, hands down.
Wait until you hear about Konstantin Baum 😁 he's on RUclips and his content is educational and high quality.
Always impressed how they can reach a point where they can taste and describe the different smells and tastes in the wine.
I am now retired 40+ years at retail and distribution. I would have loved to call on this guy. Knows his stuff, pragmatic, professional and a damned good palate. Moreover he's a dude you'd like to sit down and have a glass of wine with. As with all of his videos - well done. Cheers 🍷
Heitz must be thrilled that you're showcasing them with such a phenomenal flight! What a pity about the '94 - what a heartbreaker. Thanks for walking us through this vertical tasting. There are so many good single vintage wineries in Napa - you've picked a legacy brand as far as that goes! Nicely done.
1994 was probably a bit too young.
I will stop everything to watch André talk about wine. Love Heitz. Their Port is a requirement during the holidays.
Love the richness of Andre's observations and guidance! Thank you!
I learned so much watching this, thank you so much! And 100% agree that Andre needs his own show!
Me sitting here watching Sommelier videos while drinking grape kool aid:
Mm, yes, quite.
I learn so much from everyone of of his videos! Also, the way my heart broke for him when he sniffed the 1994🥺😢
The sincerity and passion make this so much fun to watch!
This guy is just amazing. Calm, clear, knowledgeable, funny, and just a great advocate for wine in general.
I really like that you included the failing bits - first the cork and then the taste. Everybody always touts the wins, but understanding what can go wrong even for the experts calms me down!
The difference between a pro and an amateur is that the pro has failed dozens of times to get where he or she is. His "it happens" was so calm and so natural because he's telling the truth. Sometimes it happens and that's okay.
They could have easily just cut it or replaced it but I’m glad they kept it in, also love how this guy encouraged the crew to take a smell to the tainted one too.
I cannot believe he is older than 1978! He looks incredible

Love Andre, love his chill vibe towards wine. Very refreshing!
This series has made me actually like and appreciate wine! Was a beer person strictly before
Yea i still am a beer person and tried to tap into the wine experience but i just didn’t know too much about it. But ill give it a second go
I watched a masterclass on wine (on Masterclass lol) but this 20 min video is 100% better: for once, I actually understand what we mean about the color, taste, acidity etc! And what a trip watching him opening these "time capsules" and getting excited about it! PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE WITH HIM OR GIVE THIS MAN A SERIES!!
Second day watching the blog, I’m already in love with the way he speaks and how he passes his knowledge is amazing.
This host is amazing and knows his stuff! What a great series. Learned so much. Cheers.
So compelling to watch someone at the top of their game, with so much natural warmth too. Would love to see him do pairings/flights with BA recipes.
the fact the 94 bottle was cheaper than the 2007 bottle, while he's also claiming 94 was the best vintage ever for Napa, makes me think the seller knew something was up.
No - because the price not only depends on the age and the rating, but also on the rarity. It could be, that in 2007 Heitz just produced much less wine. And if it is a reasonable good vintage, it means, that it might be rarer than a great vintage. Also: maybe the 94 has been directly considered amazing - that means, the price might have been directly excessively expensive. And so on.
The seller can not possibly know, that a wine has corkage. Sometimes the microorganism is introduced in the production - but for a top winery like Heitz the issue is definitely limited to the individual cork!
No way that 2007 napa valley is that pricey. This is a $65, not the martha's vineyard. Would expect maybe $100
@@abcdefghijkl5408 I was thinking the same thing. Heitz sells their regular NV CS for under $75. Not even the Martha's Vineyard would be over $300, not for that vintage anyway.
I absolutely loved this video, especially the use of technical terms with definitions and practical application. Cheers!
Andre is the man. He loves what he does and makes it accessible rather than being an arrogant tweeb. I love people who can share their passions respectfully. I'm a fancy beer person but he makes me want to try more wines
I just want to thank this guy for the education he is giving...what a treasure! He needs his own series , btw.

I loved this video, thanks for posting this! Would LOVE more of Andre 🥰 well rounded, knowledgeable, precise and articulate instructor 🧡
A winery here in Niagara, Ontario called Flat Rock Cellars offered a wine nerd pair of bottles this year. Pinot noir is their specialty and they produced a set that was harvested on the same day from the same field, processed and fermented exactly the same except one used wild yeast from the area and one was innoculated with a yeast curated for Pinot Noir.
It was a fascinating tasting experience!
