Immutable systems bring back old memories. In the late 70-thies I designed an operating system to run Air Traffic Control systems on 1 to 250 mini-computers (16 bits). With the exception of a small portion of code (assembler), that had to run in physical memory, all OS software and all ATC programs did run in read-only pages and were written in RTL/2 (comparable to C). As a consequence all operational data, message queues and the stacks were initialized dynamically in r/w memory pages. Because we had max 64KB of memory space all interprocess communication was done by messaging, where the message had to be delivered in the queue of the receiver in its address space on the same processor or on another processor over the network :)
Couldn't agree with you more on using Flatpak. Keeping a lean core is one of the reasons I moved all the programs I could to Flatpak. I'd like to think that was one of the reasons my recent upgrade to Kubuntu 23.04 went as smoothly as it did.
I’m rebuilding my main laptop with fedora kiniote with ublue right now. Btw, you don’t need to use sudo with rpm-ostree unless you are using fedora core os server.
I would be delighted if you could do a piece about Fedora CoreOS. To me it appears to be the perfect platform for a docker host. But I'm still struggling to get my head around all the concepts involved (rpm-ostree, layering, ...).
I'm exploring Fedora SilverBlue 38. It's promising but I'm facing issues regarding Brother USB scanner use. After Installing Vendor RPM in Toolbox additional configuration is required. I guess I have to understand more about Podman & USB devices permission in Podman/Toolbox ...
well, I wouldn't use the word "supports" as the Silverblue team clearly documents they do NOT support it nor do they recommend doing it...here is the quote from their documents "Fedora Silverblue does not provide a fully functional experience for dual booting or manual partitioning. It is possible to make Fedora Silverblue work for both dual boot and manual partitioning, and some guidance is provided on manual partitioning below. However, there are hazards involved in both cases, and you should only attempt to use these features if you have done the necessary research, and are confident that you can overcome any issues that you might encounter."
So, I moved from Ubuntu recently because I wanted to get rid of those "spins". And now that I am finally happy using Fedora, they push me again to containers.
I don't go and make postings for help with linux I'd rather do the research into my problem and learn why I got it what it actually is and how to go about fixing it on my own it helps me have a better understanding and I learn more then just asking on fourms
True, and those are lessons you remember. The problem is in the corporate world, most Project Managers would be throwing a fit after an hour or more of troubleshooting...they have short memories and little patience...:)
I've had nothing but problems with fedora 38 workstation (non silverblue)... Even on a totally clean install I get greated with crash warnings... My sony headset just keeps going back tp the phone function and only plays mono and I can't select the normal headset to play. Errors, crashes, slowness... Just horrible.... 5800x3d, 64gigs DDR4/4000, 3060ti, 980 pro, etc... I've done several installs, also the cinnemon version which for whatever reason doesn't even include the store.... but still very unstable and very slow. So went mack to mint which is stable and works fine. Flatpak is nice if only it didn't have so many outdated ones.
It sounds as cumbersome as the iOS way. I still have no idea how to create a symlink at the root. Please make a video about iOS. On iOS, changing passwords is also somehow related to 2FA. But checking the email for that 2FA is yet another 2FA.

“Fedora silverblue is based” You heard the Man

That's because the silverblue/Kinoite installer adds your user to wheel and wheel users can run rpm-ostree without sudo (see /etc/sudoers.d IIRC)

Really nice👍

Fedora Silverblue supports dual booting OOB. I using Silverblue alongside windows and other Linux distros with no issues.

But even the os-probe utility it's embedded into the immutable image.
But indeed it's in the documentation, but why?
Does dual boot work with the guided installation or does it need specific settings in the manual partitioning?
wonder how this compares to MicroOS
Replace OSTree with btrfs snapshots and you’re close. Silverblue is a bit more mature I gather just from having more people working on it.
This guy talks about it:

He also has a personal blog called ypsidanger.

So just use standard Fedora Workstation if you don't want to run Silverblue. What's the issue?
I'm more looking forward to the Fedora 39 Ostree releases, myself.
Whats special about the 39?
Using a safer, stricter setting to build images, as well as providing the next phase of native ostree container booting.
1:33 I am a silverblue dualbooter actually

@CyberGizmo apparently people don't like me saying that on reddit in a Ubuntu posting lol
