TuneD sure is a useful tool for quickly optimizing machines for particular workloads, nice to see they're using it as the default for power profile management now. The speed and performance improvements of DNF5 have been impressive especially, a great release from the Fedora Project.
Hi DJ Ware, since you mentioned Fedora as being one of your favorite distributions, do you also use other rpm distributions such as CentOS Stream and RHEL for any particular use cases?
Honestly expected more changes, but hey less changes required means the platform works good as is, i've been happy on kde plasma but will definitely try cosmic just cause i would love the option for tilling builtin when i want it
NVIDIA driver issues on gnome and KDE, need to download maximize and minimize buttons to minimize things, bugs just the usual. Oh and you can watch porn more privately now which is good step up in the right direction.
"It will keep nagging you [to upgrade the release] though." Sometimes I think the best kept secret of Linux is that the best desktop distro would be a yearly Fedora clone that's simply that one release behind with a few setup options for desktop hardening. SUSE Slowroll is the next best thing, but it's still Alpha. (I admit I ignore Canonical completely.)
Yep, then the driver issue, or kernel issues start occuring, then its like "oh shit". *loads up google and types how to fix nvidia driver issue* or that noveua crap can't spell it.
He mentioned in his recent AMA stream that's he's been moving more and more machines over to BTRFS lately due to improvements to the filesystem, particularly speed
Dont underestimate weak machines! Dual core with 4 Gb Ram is just fine for simple usage scenarios. I test regularly on my 2012 MacbookAir, distros with LXQT use less than 1 Gb Ram when idle. I write letters and do light internet researches on it without issues (since i love that machine).
I'm upgrading an older desktop to have 16gb ram for use with Fedora Kinoite. With 20-30 tabs in a browser 6 gb is used up pretty quickly. My "recommended" ram is 16gb. Memory is cheap.
Hey, I'd LOVE to hear your ramblings on kernel 6-12 vs the legacy RT-patched kernels which are for example currently available in Debian. Will there be any need for separate availability of RT patched kernels in the future?
I still get surprised by this sentiment that many Linux veterans seem to have. "It's not something you'd want to use as a daily drive, but it's always fun to play with". If I'm installing an OS it's because I have work to do and the previous install was somehow a burden - It's wild to me. I think there are so many distros, because - at least in part, people think it's fun to distro.
If they switched out the partition tool from anaconda it would be fantastic. I deleted the usb drive's partition again. Switching to a tty, next time and using fdisk or cfdisk instead.
I wait until eol before I upgrade, so I'll hopefully try this version out in November 2025. Can't wait for dnf to finally get a speedup. it's so painfully slow, especially if you force refresh each time.
Fedora is a good distro, I switch to newer released about 5th or so. Flathub will keep updating for several years. I say the new Fedora take takes a cpu with 20+mb of cache, w 4 cores assigned, 8gb+ ram assigned, use it with a 4+gb gpu is a good base. When compared doing the same thing on windows it uses half the resources needed and does it faster and of course without the adds distracting you. Linux is in the last few years has taken off massively form .001of a percent to 5%+ in recent years. Importantly its does not rely on a activation server, you can easily move your os and data to a new machine at anytime and to another type of cpu too.
I noticed Cosmic prefers a GPU as well, and completely agree with you and the best thing of all, you can install a single version of linux on as many computers as you like all for the low low price of $0.00
While true Cosmic is developed by System76, it is not a distro, it is a Desktop Environment, so yeah it works on Fedora as well. Hope that helps untangle the title for you.
I'm happy with it too, great distro, NVIDIA driver issues on gnome and KDE, need to download maximize and minimize buttons to minimize things, bugs just the usual. Oh and you can watch porn more privately now which is good step up in the right direction. Way better than Ubuntu LTS which has the option to upgrade to pro for free, which enables you to have security updates automatically, with real time performance, pre shipped with NVIDIA drivers and automatically downloads drivers based on the GPU you have, doesn't require you to do much research, very user friendly. Runs very smoothly and looks and feels like it can compete with windows. Definitely beginner friendly. Oh and has the maximize and minimize buttons by default. But who wants that!
CPU performance is less interesting to me these days. The metric to watch is power consumption which talks to battery life on a full charge. That's where ARM and Qualcomm are ahead of good ole Intel/AMD.
Oh sure I've seen people on YT try and do that, I've only seen one get close to doing it right, the rest have no idea what they are doing. In my experience that takes some very specialized (read very expensive) lab instruments to do the job properly. If I was making chips and or motherboards and could afford such machines, I wouldnt be doing a YT channel that's for sure. So probably not going to see that here unless the price for the equipment comes down, and so far it hasn't.
I have Ubuntu installed. I have my home directory on a separate hard drive, I tried to replace Ubuntu with Fedora. Unfortunately ,I was not able to get Fedora to properly recognize my preexisting home partition,. Has anyone been able to get this done successfully? I have also tried the new Fedora 42 installer. but still No luck, Has anyone had success doing this ?---- Well after trying again I figured it out. I needed to specify the location for /home rather than just /
I hate Linux as a desktop, I cannot stand it but windows 11 is forcing me to move, telementry is unstoppable now and the spying was already out of control, ive tried Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xbuntu, Kubuntu, Debian, OpenSuse, POP!_OS, Alma Linux I mean is there ONE linux distro that has a desktop that just works good with decent scaling etc I mean its bad, linux desktop is for masochist
You have 12 different Desktop Environments to choose from on Linux and if that doesn't work you could roll your own using Window Managers there's almost and here is a list of those: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_window_managers. And here is a list of Wayland WMs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_display_servers#Wayland. You can also check out reddit r/unixporn, its not porn, its people showing off what they did with their window managers. .Edit: Yeah the art of customizing Linux WIndow Managers is called "ricing". Slackware! OMG, that was my first linux distro ever!
@@SIackware how does tuneD compare to auto-cpufreq?
Happy with Fedora. Upgrade was smooth with no issues.
Same!
keep telling yourself that. :D
The new terminal and the update to DNF are very good. DNF got decent performance for searching and installing now.
But man, the package amount of a workstation basic instalation. I get the point but...
what what new terminal huh?
@@chargen7224 A new terminal is supposedly there when you upgrade but I think most people did´t get the new deafault
its only for Gnome, my KDE version of fedora still uses the konsole app
Hi DJ Ware, since you mentioned Fedora as being one of your favorite distributions, do you also use other rpm distributions such as CentOS Stream and RHEL for any particular use cases?
I used to have a RedHat Server, but their developers licensing (free) became so cumbersom, I moved the code over to Debian and purged it.
Honestly expected more changes, but hey less changes required means the platform works good as is, i've been happy on kde plasma but will definitely try cosmic just cause i would love the option for tilling builtin when i want it
They typically do the big stuff in the spring and the tweak stuff in the fall
A video of you detailing features or parts that would improve Fedora further, would be fun to be watch.

Hi DJ!
Do you use BTRFS on your main systems?
He mentioned in his recent AMA stream that's he's been moving more and more machines over to BTRFS lately due to improvements to the filesystem, particularly speed
👍Thanks DJ!
After months of hopping I finally settled on Fedora KDE
You gonna regret it soon. :)
Great Video, Thanx! But what is the difference between choosing Workstation + Cosmic Software on the right or choosing Cosmic DE on the left?
Choosing the Left Cosmic you get Cosmic + Supplemental Tools for Cosmic, choosing the right you decide if you want the supplemental tools or not
Upgrade to it a few days ago. Worked out fine, but it took some time.Runs with KDE Plasma on my box.
I am also using KDE Plasma on my laptop, I didnt install it right away, did it over the weekend and so far no issues

I'm a long time KDE fan but I'm *really* interested in COSMIC. (by the way, I don't use Fedora)
KDE is great but I think Cosmic is in my future

Haven't turned my laptop on for a while, upgrade time when I get home I guess.
the linux world would be a better place if fedora was the distro that first came to mind for new users instead of ubuntu
Fedora is not the best distro to start with Linux, I would say. I usually install Mint to newcomers.
Hey, I'd LOVE to hear your ramblings on kernel 6-12 vs the legacy RT-patched kernels which are for example currently available in Debian. Will there be any need for separate availability of RT patched kernels in the future?
Perhaps something to think about for a future video, not sure how many people would be interested in this. Think I'll put a community poll up and see

Funny, after one year with Fedora and Gnome I have the same feelings with the Windows Desktop and Workflow... Sooo old school...
Surely, it is the Windows desktop experience that is lacking. Linux has some fantastic desktop environments
