    After the last video I bought Ten Bells, I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it looks great. The fact that you've already put out a game that has had a good reception I think will help when it comes time to do a kickstarter later. Even if Ten Bells wasn't commercially successful I feel comfortable backing a kickstarter just because you've shown you can complete a product.

    Hey man! This looks very cool!
    The mixture of cuteness and lighting mood is awesome.
    The motion blur effect on your animations makes them very attractive.
    Personally, I like zombies, but I have a hard time watching these dark-toned zombie dramas! They affect my mood too much!
    But this kind of style is very sweet for me.
    If you have to choose between mainstream popular ideas that work for big games and weird, original ideas, go with the weirdness. It always works! So far, this looks amazing!

    I am so happy to have found your channel. I hope that this channel and Twitch can grow more to give you some income to breathe a little better in this awful situation. I saw Ten Bells from Alpha Beta Gamer, and knowing all you are going through and the fact that it wasn't a success is sad. I'm going to buy it and follow your journey on Twitch when I can. Also, I saw that you have a Patreon, and I am going to support you on that platform as fast as I can. In the meantime, good luck with everything. Raising the price of Ten Bells to at least $9.99, if not $14.99, could be a strategic move. A higher price not only signals quality but also makes discounts more appealing-for instance, $4.99 during a sale would feel like a great deal while still reflecting the game's true value. There's a reason why premium products like $1,000 iPhones sell: the price communicates worth. With an already very positive rating, you can leverage that reputation to justify a higher price point. Remember, the game's success isn't solely tied to matching a low price-it’s also about projecting confidence in its quality. Undervaluing your work can hurt not only your own profitability but also the indie scene by setting unrealistic expectations. Value your work and let the price reflect it.

    • @hillfortgames
      @hillfortgames  3 дня назад +5

      It was $10 to start with, every other game in our genre is $4 on average so we’re above value by double on anomaly games which was likely the original issue we had. We’ve had a lot of exposure and 11k of wishlists but people weren’t pulling the trigger which is why it’s been knocked down to $5 to try it out. Ultimately the issue we had on Bells was not having enough wishlists pre-launch.

    Indie dev favours a few people generally out of luck. The industry is in a bad place due to oversaturation and even great games fly under the radar. Rick Rubin's idea of creating without monetary incentive is all you can do to ensure the best product but the reality is if you need to survive you may need to find a job to support your endeavour and just accept that is the reality. No amount of stress or worry translates to a better product so for your best chance at survival is to create for the love of it and if you need a job to supplement that, that's all you can do. We create art for the sake of art, once it is out of our control we can't determine its success and it shouldn't dictate our happiness. Knowing you've done all you can is all that matters.
    It's easy to say this as I am not in your situation but I have been. And when I was going through it I did not keep my cool but if I could do it again I would try my best.

    • @hillfortgames
      @hillfortgames  3 дня назад +4

      I agree, the work needs to be done without the threat of income in which ever way. can you guys give me some tips on how to make this kind of pixel style?

    • @hillfortgames
      @hillfortgames  2 дня назад +1

      Absolutely: I use Aseprite to animate, but i usually make silhouettes of my character first, once you have a silhouette then you can mask a new layer onto it and paint in all your base colours. Once you have that base, then flatten down the sihuette and the colour mask and then start adding details.
      Too many people try to start with details and it gets a little messy. If all this fails, then do it like they used to do it in the 90's and rotoscope it. You can film yourself doing an action then import those video frames into aseprite and draw over the top of them to get a fluid look.
      Hope this helps!

    As far as I know:
    Most gamers don't care about visuals so much. Some do, sure, but it's a very small %. You can sell to this niche % and make lots of money, but for that you need a genius marketing strategy.
    For indie games, this is a good formula to spend your limited time if you want to make money:
    Visuals 5%, sound 5%, controls, gameplay, game feel 90%.
    Larger studios can afford great visuals but indies just can't...
    If you spend more than 5% of your time on graphics, you're wasting your time, unless you only do this for your own enjoyment.
    Also, you're competing with everything else a player can be doing, like browsing their phone, etc. So don't make them wait for anything, like cuscenes or having to read text on the screen, or you'll lose them. In 2024, nobody has patience.
    Hope it helps. I've applied this to app development and I've made some good money. But I learned time management the hard way...

    • @hillfortgames
      @hillfortgames  2 дня назад +1

      I have a mantra that ive always worked with while making games which is "It has to work before it looks pretty, then it has be pretty before It sells". Gameplay feel is the most important once the player gets the game into their hands but you do need to get the game controller there for them to feel it which is where the visuals come in. Marketing is usually done through how a game looks which is testament to how Long Gone is doing, nobody has played it but its gotten 27k wishlists. This actually makes me nervous *because* people havnt played it. I agree with your sentiment in that gameplay is and should always be the most important part of a game.

    Wait... 20 million views and only 150 reviews on Steam? How is that possible? I always thought that if your game is picked up by RUclipsrs/streamers you're all set and rich. That is kinda depressing considering I'm almost finished with my game...

    I’m a full stack corporate web developer trying to transition to doing game development on my own and I have to say after watching you in this video, I have taken so many notes. 🔥
    I’m also curious on what type of software are you using to create the pixel art and character animations for the game?

      That's awesome! I wish you good luck on your journey!
      I use Aseprite to animate pixel art. Im transitioning over to BlockBench for 3D this month but ive been working in blender so far. :)

    Really cool! Although it’s giving major TLOU vibes. The setting, music, logo, character (Joel).

      Hi, thanks for checking out the video. The devlog isn’t to promote the game but document the process. You can check out the previous episode for a full intro to the game for a better idea of what long gone is :)
