  • Toronto in the 1980s was a big, clean and safe city. Although the development of the skyline wasn't as dramatic as the decade before, other signs around the city (like new streetcars and the SkyDome) were indicators of a growing city. This is what Toronto looked like 40 years ago.

I miss those days - Toronto actually functioned then and there were no ugly cookie-cutter condos going up on every vacant piece of land!

As long as all major landmarks and historic buildings are kept, I'm fine with new high risers of condo buildings.

I don't mind the condos too much. They're better than the old rundown apartment buildings that used to be the norm. I do miss the arcades downtown and some of the niche stores that used to be around the Eaton Center which are now replaced by high-end clothing and cannabis stores.

@@keironforbes9512But is it really "forward" when most of us can't afford either the apartments or the wares in the stores?

People who never lived through the 80s and 90s of Toronto really missed out on a wild fun colourful time.
So many great stores on Yonge St., arcades, record stores, World's Biggest Bookstore, headshops, stores for clothing, food, it just went on and on.
Now it's clinical, gray and boring.
Don't get me started on the amount of clubs downtown Toronto had, nevermind the suburbs.
We had the most clubs per capita in North America, a club on every corner, always somewhere to go every night and thankfully no phones and social media.
There was attitude back then, just not as bad as it is today.

I remember riding my bike in the pit that was to become the skydome when I was a teenager. I got a flat tire and had to walk back to Don Mills.

no. come on. Describe this experience further please. You walked your flat-tired bike from Waaaay Downtown to the burbs because umm... That's like a 3 hour walk. Not a great day.

Back when toronto had character, it was affordable. You could actually go into a mall and buy something, now all the malls are full of high end stores selling overpriced crap!

I don't see much change from then to now except how people dressed back in 1980s. More condo towers and more cars today, seemingly. All rest major landmarks were kept the same from the 1980s which I'm quite happy to see. Keep it up Toronto
