Join Stewart Faichney in the classic ABC adventure series ‘Breakaway.’
World-touring French author and motorcyclist Anne-France Dautheville takes Stewart on a 3000km motorbike ride across the top of Australia.
The pair travel from Cairns, across the Cape York Peninsula to Normanton, down to Mount Isa, across to Tennant Creek and finally north to Darwin.
While Dautheville conquers the dirt roads and relentless heat of the north for a second time, Faichney experiences sides of his home country he never imagined.
‘Breakaway - Follow That Girl’ first aired on 1 January 1978.

Anne-France is an absolute legend, and still going strong. This is a great time capsule. Thank you!
I met and photographed Anne-France for a portrait series I've been working on this past summer in Paris. She doesn't ride any longer but she is as feisty as ever. It was a privilege to spend time with her.
Just beautiful in a thousand ways.
Never gone motorcycling, but after seeing this, maybe I should give it a try...
absolutely epic!
Australia is a true motorcycle paradise!!
Free spirits in the seventies. Love it!
Looking forward to watching this clip. Thanks for making the RUclips world aware of it.
Why did I ever sell my BMW R80? The memories listening to the bikes in this video are strong.
Yes, the frame was flexy and the headstem bearings always worked themselves loose, but it was lovable.
A dab of champers as perfume, that's a new one on me. Is it a French thing? (the dab, not the champers)
Fairly aggressive tread for a big touring bike!
I remember watching this back in the seventies, thinking that I’d love to do that. Stewart sums it up well, at the end and how awesome is Anne, always another adventure to be done.
Got a blue 72’ r75/5 toaster tank myself. Loved hearing the sewing machine purr of the beemers 😊.
Awsome stuff, love the simplicity of the 70s
That was a great memory..I went right around Australia in 1984/5 and it was like they said at the end...You don't want it to end...The adventures me and my dog had in the wild were like an Outback movie...A fasicating place where you realize just how small you are...Kawasaki Z1000...
I always remember him from bellbird
Thanks Auntie, keep 'em coming.
Epic trip!
She is perfect
Epic journey with just the two of us. Plus the film crew.
BMW great smooth running driveshaft motorcycle 🏍! 😘🏍😀 Mike from Missouri
Got a 72 r75/5 toaster tank myself and my town of Joplin MO took a real bad tornado hit kinda like Darwin did.
I was able to ride there in 1975-76 but never got to Darwin due to a Typhoon.
CYCLONE! Tracy to be spacific.
is that Bill Hader riding that bmw?
Oldmate makes us look a bit soft. Sweetheart is all over it.
Thanks for this a time before BS
They collude with each other, make mischief, suppress and smear, do evil things, and people and gods are angr.
