Floored me too. I've always believed that people would get on with each other if left to themselves without the powerful "infuencers" like the media and politics skewing our view.
This quote stopped me in my tracks. This is what I've experienced time and time again from my own travels, and what I hear from those travellers who have gone further afield than myself. Don't focus on the media, don't worry about what your Mother tells you (even though she loves you), get out there and ride, get out there and meet the world.
That is what a lot of the worldtraveling riders here on youtube experience. Even the woman seem to have no problems in 3rd world states they cross by bike (channels Itchy Boots or onherbike for example). I don't dare do ride around the planet, but If I had a problem with my bike anywhere away from home, there came always people who wanted to help me. Thats a good lesson.
Nathan's adventure was the main inspiration for my solo motorcycle trip to Russia 2 years ago. During my trip I only met amazing people, that were willing to help, talk (even when we couldn't understand eachother) and be helpful. I had strangers paying for my gas, my ferry toll, offering me tea, inviting me in. Definitely go out there and enjoy.

True for a lot people that do distance hiking. After six months of walking through nature go back to living in a city, watching TV, staring at a cellphone, etc seems very soul crush. And, to be clear, it is soul crushing.
I never thought he would have to go trough this. I remember following him on advrider that was years ago. I mean after all that journey, people he meet, places he visit which I could only dream of. Glad he can manage it.

Im 63 and about to do the same trip. These videos helped me a lot preparing. Already rode in the Himalaya. His headache was due to insufficient adjustment to the height. It takes a couple of days with total relaxation before ascending...

This is awesome! One of my dreams too. I’m from Italy and in the 70s my dad went to India with his 125cc Vespa! One of his friends married an Indian girl and the marriage was there with a traditional ceremony. My dad was invited but couldn’t afford the flight so he packed his Vespa and ride it all the way to and from India. It took weeks. Notice that in those years you couldn’t go straight there from Europe because of Cold War! He had to pass through Greece, Turkey, Iran...
@@djsangre One day by ferry from Italy to Greece is not a big problem. I don't see the reason why would one want to ride over all former Yugoslavian countries and Albania to get to Greece when the final destination is India?
@@motolover5697 Because if you live in northern Italy, very close to the Alps, the road to the south to board the ferry is almost the same through the Balcans. In those days you couldn't depart from Venice (and I suppose today too)...you have to go south to a town called Brindisi to embark to Greece. By a 125cc Vespa is 2-3 days to get to the South. 125cc are not allowed to use highways or interstates here.

If there's someone out there who struggles with depression, feeling of I can't or I'm a nobody! I strongly encourage you to buy , rent or borrow a motorcycle and just go! I know it will be scary as hell at first because your going to worry about breaking down, running out of money or not knowing where your going to sleep but I can assure you that if any of those things happen you will figure it out and you would be surprised how many people are out there that will lean a hand when they see a person in need... It is the ultimate antidepressant.. You may just find that your not alone! Great video my friend..
Mate, stop planning, and start riding! plan your trip one day in advance. Have an end-goal in mind (Perth) and travel towards that goal but don't plan the entire trip waypoint to waypoint style.Travel from sun-up until you reach your kilometer goal, which I would set at a respectable 300 OR LESS per day. Grab your hygiene, tool, sleeping, and cooking kit. Grab yourself some spare oil + filters (oil/air), some spare gasoline, 5 days worth of water and food. Throw in a few tubes (for the tires)and a patch kit even if you have tubeless. Get yourself a hand pump or a compressor and GO. (If you bent a rim open, throw in a tube to keep air and hammer that cunt back in form) Bon voyage!
I have ridden motorcycles for 42 of my 54 years. It is one of the most therapeutic things I know of. There is also a connection that you get with people when you travel by motorcycle that seems magical. They all want to meet you, to talk to you, to share a story or an idea or a meal or a drink. @Carbon Fiber Weiner I have a friend who rode a 916 from Holland down to South Africa, so it can be done on anything. There are others; Nick Sanders, Bruce Smart, Sjaac Lucassen who have all used sports bike to go around the world on. Crazy people!
Why do you always have to label, split and categorize. We all ride bikes, End of story. I don't fucking care what you ride as long as you are loving it. A 1290 KTM, a 1200 GS or a flippin scooter. Who gives a shit? Go out and enjoy the ride.
Brilliant video Nathan, I bought your book and loved it, I could not put it down until I got to the end. I have a 1974 Honda CB 125cc and love it, I have owned it for 45 years I’m now 73 years old. Motorcycles keep you young and fit. I also own CBF 500 cc and 1973 Triumph Bonneville T 120R. Safe travels. 👍🇬🇧

I backpacked around the world for almost 4 years in the early to mid 90's and this is such an inspirational journey. Looking back and now being a biker myself I wished I had made some of my trips via a motorcycle. And yes it's completely true what you said about the government's injecting fear into the hearts of their own people. We are all brothers and sisters of this beautiful planet. After the sudden end of a relationship a few years ago, I packed an overnight bag and set off on my 650. I came home 8 days later... Calmer, happier and still recall just how good it felt to just ride... Top work Matt.
I've just watched this sat at home on lockdown feeling a bit flat. I found it truly inspirational. Made me feel a lot better, your absolutely right your average Joe just wants to get on with life. It's not about material possessions or money. The world can be a beautiful place we just don't appreciate it enough were too busy half the time messing it up. Made me want to get my bike out and do a massive expedition. Great work love to see more.

I rode across Australia twice on an old 250cc single cylinder single carby bike, and everyone said I would die doing it. I'd be flattened by a truck or hit a roo and that was it, but we went anyway and had an Adventure. Everything he said was true, there were moments when you hate it but you just keep on keeping on because what other choice do you have, and in the end you love it. The feeling at the end is also true, and its painful. You just spent all this time alone, having this amazing adventure, and you get home and life just has to go on and its awful, you just want to get on the bike and go back to a simpler place where you feel like the main chracter of your own story. You meet so many amazing people and every day is so special because you are alive, and you get home and its so mediocre and awful and you fall back into the routine of day to day life and you're just another cog in the machine. It truly is an awful feeling. He should be so proud of this journey he has undertaken, few have the courage to taste such freedom.

How did I miss this video? Amazing trip and lots of true words. I've gone through similar experiences and totally understand it all, the excitement, the enjoyment and the depression. Ewan McGregor said it really well in Long Way Round when he said that the wonderful thing about travel is that you're just in the moment: You don't think about bills, insurances, jobs. All you worry about is potholes and when you get to eat dinner. (I know it's not an exact quote). Iit's so human being in the moment. The struggle about coming back into a normal living is one that not many talk about, but I think almost all travellers experience. Almost the saddest stories are those of relationships that have survived this hardship ,but very often fall apart after the trips. Travel is such a wonderful thing, one that even with the possible low after, is one that everyone should experience. It's a beautiful world.
I truly agree on your viewpoint.. and to tell why you & I missed this one because not many people cares about this kind off stuff. People generally thinks them about stupid crazy types and hence views are less and youtube algorithm works that way

I motorcycle (125cc to max 220cc) / bicycle / public transport the globe about 40% of the year these days.... i feel super comfortable on the road.. I sometimes feel a little lost in life but i have learnt to embrace that feeling as i recognise its what drives me forward looking for adventure...

Hat off to you Sir.. For your bravery (or blind stupidity ha ha) in undertaking a trip like that with next-to-no prep' and for baring your soul as you did.. I've travelled a lot (but always very well prepared!) and have found myself contemplating the Prudoe-TDF trip a few times but then it occurred to me that I might just be trying to distract myself from my, then present, reality - that being of unhappiness and often depression.. I wonder how many undertake trips like this thinking it's what we need, that it will fix us when all we're doing is running away from the problem rather than face it.. and sometimes the answer to that problem is simply, as you point out, to learn to be grateful for what we have.. or, in some cases, to allow ourselves the time and attention to REALLY grieve the loss of whatever it was that is making us unhappy, not brush it under the carpet and pretend we're ok.. Like you I rejected medication but found counseling useful.. Often depression is simply caused by stories you tell yourself - counseling can help you see that, nearly always, those stories are just that - fictions.. I still hope to do that ride some day but for the right reason - to get somewhere rather than get away from 'myself'.. As they say "Wherever you go, there you are"..

My focus was just on doing the trip not filming it. Many do it now just for filming, which is fine if you want to make a feature film of it

Goes to show you don't need a KTM 1290 Adventure to tour. You can use any bike.

@Carbon Fiber Weiner I have a friend who rode a 916 from Holland down to South Africa, so it can be done on anything. There are others; Nick Sanders, Bruce Smart, Sjaac Lucassen who have all used sports bike to go around the world on. Crazy people!
Why do you always have to label, split and categorize. We all ride bikes, End of story. I don't fucking care what you ride as long as you are loving it. A 1290 KTM, a 1200 GS or a flippin scooter. Who gives a shit? Go out and enjoy the ride.

Brilliant video Nathan, I bought your book and loved it, I could not put it down until I got to the end. I have a 1974 Honda CB 125cc and love it, I have owned it for 45 years I’m now 73 years old. Motorcycles keep you young and fit. I also own CBF 500 cc and 1973 Triumph Bonneville T 120R. Safe travels. 👍🇬🇧

johnybrokeit Hi Johnny, yes was getting out twice a week on my bikes until the lockdown, I can’t wait for it to be over. It rained most of winter, and we have had 5 weeks lovely weather in lockdown, Dodd law.

BTW, with RUclips full of touring videos where huge amounts of money is spent on bikes and gear and gadgets and what not, it’s so refreshing & relatable to all us broke bikers who just make do with what we have, which is often not a lot. Keeping it real. Keeping it simple. Love it.

I backpacked around the world for almost 4 years in the early to mid 90's and this is such an inspirational journey. Looking back and now being a biker myself I wished I had made some of my trips via a motorcycle. And yes it's completely true what you said about the government's injecting fear into the hearts of their own people. We are all brothers and sisters of this beautiful planet.

I've just watched this sat at home on lockdown feeling a bit flat. I found it truly inspirational.
Made me feel a lot better, your absolutely right your average Joe just wants to get on with life. It's not about material possessions or money. The world can be a beautiful place we just don't appreciate it enough were too busy half the time messing it up. Made me want to get my bike out and do a massive expedition. Great work love to see more.

I rode across Australia twice on an old 250cc single cylinder single carby bike, and everyone said I would die doing it. I'd be flattened by a truck or hit a roo and that was it, but we went anyway and had an Adventure. Everything he said was true, there were moments when you hate it but you just keep on keeping on because what other choice do you have, and in the end you love it. The feeling at the end is also true, and its painful. You just spent all this time alone, having this amazing adventure, and you get home and life just has to go on and its awful, you just want to get on the bike and go back to a simpler place where you feel like the main chracter of your own story. You meet so many amazing people and every day is so special because you are alive, and you get home and its so mediocre and awful and you fall back into the routine of day to day life and you're just another cog in the machine. It truly is an awful feeling. He should be so proud of this journey he has undertaken, few have the courage to taste such freedom.

Amazing trip and lots of true words.
I've gone through similar experiences and totally understand it all, the excitement, the enjoyment and the depression.
Ewan McGregor said it really well in Long Way Round when he said that the wonderful thing about travel is that you're just in the moment: You don't think about bills, insurances, jobs. All you worry about is potholes and when you get to eat dinner. (I know it's not an exact quote).
Iit's so human being in the moment. The struggle about coming back into a normal living is one that not many talk about, but I think almost all travellers experience. Almost the saddest stories are those of relationships that have survived this hardship ,but very often fall apart after the trips.
Travel is such a wonderful thing, one that even with the possible low after, is one that everyone should experience. It's a beautiful world.

Travel light, travel small ,no need to carry a big bag of ego .
If you drop a bike like this you can pick it up again unaided. Try that with a BMW Boxer Twin. Well that's true for the majority of us anyway.

Great adventure and story and thanks for being very open in it.. I motorcycle (125cc to max 220cc) / bicycle / public transport the globe about 40% of the year these days.... i feel super comfortable on the road.. I sometimes feel a little lost in life but i have learnt to embrace that feeling as i recognise its what drives me forward looking for adventure...

Hat off to you Sir.. For your bravery (or blind stupidity ha ha) in undertaking a trip like that with next-to-no prep' and for baring your soul as you did.. I've travelled a lot (but always very well prepared!) and have found myself contemplating the Prudoe-TDF trip a few times but then it occurred to me that I might just be trying to distract myself from my, then present, reality - that being of unhappiness and often depression.. I wonder how many undertake trips like this thinking it's what we need, that it will fix us when all we're doing is running away from the problem rather than face it.. and sometimes the answer to that problem is simply, as you point out, to learn to be grateful for what we have.. or, in some cases, to allow ourselves the time and attention to REALLY grieve the loss of whatever it was that is making us unhappy, not brush it under the carpet and pretend we're ok.. Like you I rejected medication but found counseling useful.. Often depression is simply caused by stories you tell yourself - counseling can help you see that, nearly always, those stories are just that - fictions.. I still hope to do that ride some day but for the right reason - to get somewhere rather than get away from 'myself'.. As they say "Wherever you go, there you are"..

Really enjoyed it. And identified with it. I rode Singapore to London in 1973. It was the best couple of years ever. I’ve always loved the travelling life and motorcycle is the only way to go for me.
