I used to work at an exotic animal rescue center that had a lot of birds that never shut up. One time when I was working I started singing some pop and Beatles songs. Something felt weird about 10min later and I realized that for the first time in my life, the room was dead silent. All the birds had been listening to me sing. Just hope it was silence of approval! XD

    • @composing-chaos
      @composing-chaos 2 года назад +62

That’s because school boards and school administrations are peopled by those who don’t understand the importance of the arts in whole brain learning. They are mostly sports minded and don’t realize how true education for community is academic, athletic, and the aesthetic. We can’t teach kids to be nurturing humans with kindness without including what makes us human though the creative and performing arts. It takes more than just humanities teachers. School boards and administrators need to read a book on truly diversified learning.

The beluga pressing its head against the glass of the tank when the guy was playing the fiddle is clear intent to listen on the part of the beluga. They don't hear quite in the same way we do, and sound doesn't translate from one medium to another very well, like air to water or air to solid. Pressing its head against the glass would help it pick up the sound better.
Belugas are actually incredibly sound-oriented. As much as, if not more so, than dolphins (which they actually are not, belugas are more closely related to narwhals)
Their hearing range is a bit higher pitched than ours, so violin/fiddle was a good choice. From the looks of it this one it was very interested in the sounds the man was making!

I'm pretty sure something that would really impress them would be to have a live small a capella group. And not only doing cute pop, jazz or folk numbers, but complex polyphonic music...something by Josquin de Prez or Thomas Tallis (Renaissance), or a Baroque choral fugue...most people have no idea how sophisticated their hearing life actually is. Most cetacean right brain hemispheres are substantially bigger than their left; they use, perceive and process sound on MULTIPLE bandwidths.

It shouldn't surprise me but it does to the point where my jaw dropped several times at some of the reactions. Shades of antiquity when if you heard music it had to be live. I work one summer (I was 46 years old) as a tour guide for a tourist attraction in north central Arkansas. Part of my job was to feed the animals living at the mini farm, including the geese. Once they had eaten their fill, I would begin walking down to the pond in their enclosure. As the geese waddled toward me, I would begin singing “OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING.” By the time I had sung the chorus and two verses twice, the geese all had their heads tucked under their wings, and were sound asleep. I always felt empowered that I could make the noisy geese go to sleep by singing to them!🪽🪿

This really demonstrates that the statement which says music is a language is true. We thought that would only apply to humans but it’s a universal language. All animals certainly can hear and enjoy it. Incredible ❤

Animals of all kinds respond to music. I worked in animal rescue at the SPCA and was a foster parent for exotic animals in need of temporary shelter and care. I had a 10 foot Burmese Python for a few years and my girlfriend was deathly afraid of him. (At first)
After work I’d open the snake’s huge terrarium and he was free to cruise around the apartment as he wished. I was always in my “music corner” practicing electric guitar in headphones while my girlfriend was always on the couch watching her prerecorded soap operas.
The snake would always go to her and curl up in her lap. (She’s calm and warm, snakes love that) Her fear long gone, she thought of the snake as her buddy. And he was.
But when I’d put down the electric guitar and headphones and pick up the acoustic, the snake would look right at me. Abandon the warm lap he was in to investigate the sound. He really seemed to like Eagles songs and he’d crawl across the floor to listen. Rear up his formidable upper body and touch his head to the guitar. I wondered if he was more interested in my hand movements but that wasn’t it, since my hands did the same movements on the electric guitar he couldn’t possibly hear, so it was the sound he was interested in.
I did a little experiment. Let’s see if he likes heavy metal played on acoustic guitar? He immediately turned away at the sound of Black Sabbath and went crawling back to my girlfriend. So it wasn’t just the vibration of the guitar, he could tell the difference between something soothing and something negative or harsh. So, I started playing some old James Taylor songs and he came right back to me and rested his head on the guitar. Amazing. This reptile knows which kind of music he likes and it’s definitely not metal.
One time, the snake was cruising around the apartment and just disappeared somewhere. We looked everywhere and couldn’t find him.
He’s 10 feet long, there’s only so many places he could hide, so it has to be someplace warm. That’s where snakes go. My girlfriend was in tears worried about him. “Where is he?! Find him Sean!” I think she loves this snake more than me now. That’s so cool.
In a last desperate hope, I rolled the refrigerator away from the wall and saw just part of his tail hanging out and he’s hissing at me. He’s all curled up in the compressor works where it’s warm and he’s in a foul mood because he’s shedding. Snakes are always in a crappy mood when they are shedding because their eyes turn opaque and they can’t see. He’s all tangled up in the refrigerator works and there’s no getting him out. I’d have to take the whole refrigerator apart and still he’d resist being freed from his warm lair. Super strong, you can’t just move him if he doesn’t want to move.
My girlfriend came up with a brilliant plan. “Get your guitar and start playing the music he likes. Hotel California I think is his favorite.”
I sat down and started playing Hotel California. My girlfriend is watching the snake in the fridge, “He’s moving, he hears it. Keep playing.”
The 10 foot Python crawled out of the fridge and over to me and rested his head against the guitar. “Hey buddy? We were worried about you.” (I blocked off the back of the fridge with wire mesh so he couldn’t get in there again)
The moral of the story though is that music really does tame the savage beast and when I’ve gone on animal rescues, whether it be a pack of wolves or a pool of alligators, I bring my guitar with me just in case.

All that said, I’d like to issue a warning about keeping large constrictor snakes as pets. I’m a professional and know what they are capable of. They aren’t mean in a human kind of thinking but they’re instinctive. They can kill you without any intent in doing so.
Major rule with large constrictors: You can’t sleep with them. They belong in their cage at night.
They can wiggle through even what you think is a secure door and they’ll find your warm body and want to cuddle. All that seems kind of cool, but just hanging out with my snake in the evening he’d wrap himself around my arm. And squeeze. It’s just natural to them but because it’s so gradual in pressure, I’d be like, “Hey! Naga! Wake up! You’re hurting me.” I’d tap him on the nose and he’d wake up and his muscles relaxed. He was dreaming of killing a rat or something. Didn’t know my arm wasn’t a rat. Now imagine sleeping with this snake all comfortable and cuddly and he takes a wrap on your neck? He doesn’t mean to kill you, but stupid people have died this way.
On the Bay Bridge in San Francisco a strange person was driving across the bridge and crashed into the guardrail. Turns out, his wonderful and beautiful boa constrictor had strangled him. The snake is not at fault, a constrictor’s hold is very gentle to start with. Then the pressure increases and you better be awake as that happens. Otherwise, you’re a dead idiot like this guy was.
My girlfriend really loved our snake and knew he’d never hurt her. (Not intentionally anyway), but snakes dream like all animals, so they aren’t to be trusted in that subconscious state. “Yeah, Naga is very gentle and won’t hurt you while he’s awake but watch out when he’s asleep. He has snake-dreams and he doesn’t know where he is just like you don’t while you’re in your dreams. The difference is, his dreams are about killing. Period. He dreams about rodents and he’ll involuntary act out these dreams on anything he’s wrapped around.”
Another “experiment” involved Dawn letting the snake wrap on her arm while watching TV late at night. So cute. I was wide awake. She seemed disconnected from reality here. Loving her cuddly snake. Naga was asleep. That’s when he’s most dangerous. I could see him constricting on her arm but she didn’t notice it. “Babe, look at your hand. All the blood vessels are swelled. Naga is squeezing you.”
She looked at her hand, and said “Oh shit!” I tapped Naga on the head and he woke up. Relaxed his muscles and probably wondered why I disrupted his peaceful snooze.
Dawn was like, “Why would he do that?” I nodded, “He’s a f*cking snake. He was asleep and dreaming. He’ll never bite you because you’re his mother but he’s still a snake when he’s asleep and has no clue who you are. Your warm arm in his dreams feels like a rat to him. That’s why he tried to squeeze the life out of it. Nothing personal, he’s dreaming. You get it yet how you can’t cuddle with a constrictor while you’re both asleep? Why he needs to be securely locked in his cage at night?”
Dawn feared the snake when he was awake and cruising around. That’s not when to be afraid because they’re basically harmless then. It’s when you relax with them and not know the danger they pose at night.
Again, because they’re asleep and dream of killing not you, but the warm thing they are wrapped around in their dreams.
Dawn gained a greater respect for this huge snake and realized “befriending” him wasn’t all there was going on here.
Sure, Naga loves Dawn but now she sees the threat. Don’t sleep with a constrictor and never feed him in his cage.
The thing about never feeding a reptile in his “home” has to do with his association with the cage door opening meaning food. You can’t make that connection with them. Otherwise, you’ll get bit when you open the door. Snakes can’t see very well but they hear the door opening and if that’s what they think is food coming, they’ll bite your hand. Lots of beginners in snake handling have learned this the hard way. So, Dawn wondered why I always fed Naga in the bathroom. In the tub full of water. For one, snakes love water and it’s nowhere near his cage. I have to be honest, it’s pretty gross watching a snake eat a rat in your bath tub but that’s just the way it’s done. I’ve had rats as pets before and I like them. Wish I didn’t have to do this but I’m looking out for this snake. Something has to give.
So now, when I open Naga’s cage, he doesn’t think food and crawls around looking for Dawn’s warm lap. If he’s hungry, he goes into the bathroom. Sometimes, he’s not hungry but just wants to swim in the tub. I know this because when he’s hungry he climbs up on me and says so. When he just wants to swim he crawls into the tub waiting for me to run the warm water for him. Then he’s happily swimming in the water. Dawn would be here for these moments but couldn’t stomach feeding time. That’s okay, I’ll deal with the gross stuff, but Naga is happy now just swimming in his tub. Dawn is smiling. “He’s so cute!”
Then Naga would relax on the bottom of the tub underwater. I wonder how long he can hold his breath? It’s been ten minutes and Dawn is worried he’s going to drown. “This is ridiculous! Please save him!”
I’d reach in and touch his head and he’d come to the surface and flick his tongue at us and wonder why we bothered him and go right back underwater where he was comfortable. It truly was maddening to think how long he would do this and not drown? I guess snakes know what they’re doing and us humans will never get it. We retire to the living room to let the snake do his thing. Maybe an hour went by and here comes Naga all shiny and wet and crawls up on the couch and as usual, picks Dawn’s lap to curl up in. She’s ready with a towel to dry him off even though he doesn’t think he needs drying off. He was fine completely wet and doesn’t understand why we’d prefer him dry.
He tolerates our odd behavior so unlike a snake. He does like the towel though. He really does like being babied. He relaxes completely as Dawn dries him off and then gets playful like a child. He’s slithering between us back and forth and sticking his tongue in our faces, he’s obviously very happy. Like a puppy but this is a huge snake. Same difference.
Anyway, I get on a writing tangent and don’t know when to quit. So I’ll quit now. Long day on boats tomorrow. Wish it wasn’t so f*cking cold. Take care and be safe everyone.
