I'd say cello, but that could get interesting on a boat. With an instrument held on the chin, your knees act as a shock absorber. Can't do that while sitting on a chair. Though come to think of it, there was a Classical piece that used a very small cello as a chin instrument... Hmmm... ruclips.net/video/wbH3JYfRjOQ/видео.html
Yes the violoncello da spalla, that came up in my feed as well. But I bet the whales would love the octobass even more! There's several videos on it, but since it's huge and you have to stand on a platform to play it, maybe not the best instrument on a boat.

I remember well a day of whale watching off Cape Cod. We went out a short distance and the captain shut down the engine. He said that some of the whales really liked to interact with tourists and that they would find us. Sure enough, a cow with calf came by to check us out. She left the calf about 50 yds. away and came along side. She rolled over on her side so that she could look at all of us leaning over the side. The captain suggested we talk to her. Everyone did. "Sometimes they will wave, if we do first." So we tried that. She slowly rolled a little farther over and waved back with her pectoral fin! Shortly thereafter, she brought the calf to us for more group interactions. What fun and what a great connection.
My uncle was 2nd violinist for a major symphony orchestra. A little over 50 years ago when I was a small child he took me on a magical balloon ride over Stellwagen Bank. It was he, the owner of the balloon and myself. For over an hour we floated about fifty feet over the water while he gave his final concert. A pod of perhaps fifty humpbacks were obviously fans of classical music. The balloonist often took tourists over the spot and he exclaimed that the whales, while frequent visitors to the spot, rarely stayed in the exact same spot for such a long period of time and never remained in a constant state of mid breach. They all just floated there with their heads sticking out of the water. It was the very first time I saw whales. After visiting the whales we continued on our journey and ended up at the Maine coast. Later that evening my uncle passed away. My uncle literally played himself out of the world and for a brief moment took me with him on that magical journey.
What a beautiful interaction. Two species listening... the curiosity and possible enjoyment? WOW. If more moments like this were shared on this planet what a truly wonderful place this would be.

Magical is the word that comes to mind. Given the acute hearing of whales, they probably picked up every note of the violin, reverberating softly through the boat's hull, but only if they held perfectly still, close in. Beautiful beyond words.
That was a very sensitive idea of the violinist. The instrument might remind the whales of their own vocalizations. It has been shown many times that people, animals as well as plants react favourably to beautiful music. (The "Mozart effect," for instance, can help you sleep, or study, depending on the choice of piece you play). I would not get too close to killer whales, but other whales have been known to come up to people diving or on boats, and are quite gentle. (Unless one frightens them or other factors come into play). Animals are much more sensitive and intelligent than we have been giving them credit for.(I wonder how the whale would have liked Schubert's "Serenade." So lovely).
Awe, so sweet! She did so well to be on the ocean in a rocky boat and salty sea air, all of which are detrimental to playing Violin! Music is indeed the universal language that scans not just nationalities but also, species! 💕 Beautiful, Thank you for sharing!.

Imagine the whale remembering the music then starts spreading the music in the group then scientist later records a "strange" frequency and finds out it's the music this person's playing...
I find it both amusing and touching how animals respond to music. This is cool. Reminds me of the video on youtube where a guy plays Beethovens Moonlight Sonata and the Elephant comes over and listens and even starts kinda swaying to the music like he's enjoying it.

That bit of whale sound that you did at the end was a stroke of Genius as well. I hope I get to see lots of you doing this sort of thing. :D It sure would be interesting to be able to record underwater sound to see if they are making sounds to sing along or responding out loud. It's pretty undeniable that they're responding are showing up and getting closer. It was beautiful thank you for sharing.
I love this clip. She's so good at her art!! vibration is how whales communicate, so it makes sense that this frequency draws them. It's beautiful that that whale is just waiting there... Watching, almost motionless... Love!
I wish we were better to these mAjestic creatures. But they have been dying by injury or starvation or pollution from plastic. Thank you for a beautiful connection for a moment.
If she's playing anything more than a $100 violin, she's taking a risk. I'd say pretty good for what she is attempting . . . which is sounds the whales will react to . . . . not YOU. I play classical, blues and jazz violin. Not an easy thing to make the music she's making with a fiddle. She is not an entry-level violinist, critics.
Yep she's playing to them, what they should understand. Btw it takes a lot of effort to actually play this. Everybody isn't all action, this is emotions, feelings, sounds whales understand.
I thought it was completely beautiful, and if people are literally taking their time to throw shade on her playing? God so many people are so lost these days 😞

One whale to the others: "Can you make out what she's saying?"
Whale 2: "Shuddup she's trying".
"I think it's something about a cat inside of a trombone"
Think she’s drunk
Absolutely, beautiful! The power of love in music!🌺
Those whales have good taste. Beautiful playing. 🥰
Whales: "umm...sorry but, can you speak slower? I can't understand that accent"
Whales that day: "Finally! An interpreter!"
You might right -if whales had a language (which I think they do) theyÄs probably use the same word for "singing" and "talking"...
So sweet to serenade these MAGNIFICENT CREATURES!!💖
This is exactly what I was looking for! I really want to go see the humpback whales and I wondered if they would enjoy hearing music!
I don’t know why they are saying she plays bad, she’s playing in a way that is more familiar for the whales, and even then it still sounds good. Picky people
It's not even a matter of whether she is quote-unquote good or not she is playing on a platform that is constantly rocking IE the boat and you can tell by the sound that the humidity is near 100% the strings and the cat got are all saturated with moisture it's going to make a different sound than if you are in an enclosed air conditioned environment in front of an audience on a stage
I mean she plays sorta slow also and one of the notes screaked a little idk if that was from the environment, i feel like i might almost be able to play this song and im sort of beginner
But i do like her playing obviously and i would like to try it out or find the song 😬
@@Colonies_Dev as somebody who's only Talent is driving ambulances very fast sticking needles in veins and trying to give CPR to people that are going to probably die anyway I am thoroughly impressed by her Talent and if you are able to play violin to then I am thoroughly impressed by your Talent also

@SigmaTauri2 You're either right, or it's not that bad after all!
What a lovely story, it's wonderful to be able to share something with another species. I often sit out on the front porch and feed the local magpies and they reward me with song. If it's been slim pickings on a day they fly in as soon as I approach my front door and warble perhaps to say Please...
Love how youtube started recommending me old treasures like this.
This is what youtube was invented for.
Her violin music struck a chord with the whales.
lol 👍🏼
Double stop that.
Booooo ;)
THIS HURTS EVEN MORE COZ IT'S A VIOLIN.
WHAT CHORD IS SHE STRIKING I DON'T UNDERSTAND.
At least she didn’t string them along for a mediocre performance
Beautiful video...thank you so much for sharing. I had a similar thing happen to me when I was playing the violin in a field in Somerset, England...when I finished playing, I looked up to find myself surrounded by cows. They were so entranced, it seemed, by the music. 💗 💗 💗
Shauna Marie Sings moosic for the bovine😉🐂🐂
That used to happen to a friend of mine and I when we'd park in a cow field to fish. They'd listen in, but I'm fairly sure they were just waiting to see if we'd feed them anything. Too long, and they'd lose interest and start licking the car that we drove in. You can't see anything in your sideview mirror after a bunch of cows lick it.
If you moved suddenly after playing, they'd probably run. "NOT FOOD!! RUN AWAY!!!".
maybe the cows thought your were their mom
Thanks for your replies...only discovered them just now...and they're most a-moo-sing! David W - that's very interesting; thanks for sharing. kaship98 - I'm a vegan. :-) eon - Hehe...I don't think so! 💗 💗 💗
Shauna Marie Sings dem cows were probably of eating you.
This is sooo incredible !!! How beautiful !
Dear God, music binds us all, TY!!
For all we know, the violin song is being interpreted as a mating call, and these whales are showing up to get some action.
"Swiped right wassup"
Boo. Boo. Boo.
😂😂
Thats what i was thinking!
this specific sound is familiar to whales.
but its usually played by Paganini
Maui needs some tranquility and happiness right now. God bless you all! ❤🤗
This was so beautiful that the whales heard the music and stayed there to listen!!🐋🐋🐳🐳🥰🥰😍😍🎼🎼🎶🎶🎵🎵❣️❣️💕💕🧡🧡💛💛😇😇🙏🙏
Indeed, although I guess most whales would love this song even better 🥰🎼🎼🎶🎵❣🥰

"What do you think she's trying to tell us, Bob?"
"I dunno, George. I think she's broken."
Magical is the word that comes to mind. Given the acute hearing of whales, they probably picked up every note of the violin, reverberating softly through the boat's hull, but only if they held perfectly still, close in. Beautiful beyond words.
How beautiful for her, the whales and those of us who see this💕💕
What a feeling of love and kinship this must feel with our fellow creatures!
Kudos to the lady for playing in Whalesong!
That was a very sensitive idea of the violinist. The instrument might remind the whales of
their own vocalizations.
I hope lovely Moon got to attend one of these violin concerts. No wonder she loved Hawaii so much! RIP lovely Moon ~The Humpback Whale ✨🌊🐋✨
This is awesome!!! Just amazing what music brings out of Gods creatures.
Awe, so sweet! She did so well to be on the ocean in a rocky boat and salty sea air, all of which are detrimental to playing Violin! Music is indeed the universal language that scans not just nationalities but also, species! 💕 Beautiful, Thank you for sharing!.
Don't show this to Japanese whaling fleet or they will use this technique to lure whales to them
Runsin Bolt hahaha soo true
Runsin Bolt 😞
Runsin Bolt that's a scary thought
Dude, you just crushed my happy thoughts!
If im not mistaken whaling (however the fuck you spell that) is illegal and they just dont care if i had my way every navy ship from other countries would follow the fleets and shove cruise missiles up their asses
Beautiful!❤
Music is sound. Something that translates to all. Bless you for creating beauty for all❤❤❤🌟🌟🌟🌟
They really seem to be sticking to the surface to hear. That's amazing!!!
Are you alive? This video is now viral after 12 years
Man , I can't believe just how critical and childish so many of these commenters are. You should be ashamed of yourself for sure.
Is it due to your lack of skills that you down this young lady?
She was trying to do something very nice and pleasant and the whales seemed to love it too.
Thank You for playing this to these wonderful whales and thank you for your interest in whales. Needs to be more like you !!
Know one asked any of you for a profile on her ability to play either. I say she plays pretty good as far as MANY are concerned. Shame on you all.
Okay, Boomer.

But is that all you got?
All I'm say in is give credit where credit is due and stop it with the over critical statements.
“ VERY BEAUTIFUL & SPLENDID… “
Simply beautiful and the whales clearly appreciated the lovely tune
Connection is what we need more of in this world... a higher level!
Respect to this wonderful Lady violinist.
What if she sent the wrong message to the whale, such as "let's play wrestling"
that would be played by oboe
I laughed for 10 min - my honey was getting concerned because I had a hard time catching my breath 😂😂😂
Lmaooo.... Spats my screen when I read this! 😂

Oh god xD
What a joy to watch, the whale must have enjoyed it or it would have left. Your audience likes your music 🎶.

This song that she’s playing is absolutely beautiful.....😍😍❤️❤️✨✨.....but this video is just extraordinary. God’s creatures are just WOWWWWW!!!!
Imagine the whale remembering the music then starts spreading the music in the group then scientist later records a "strange" frequency and finds out it's the music this person's playing...
Wow. Most beautiful thing I have seen in a long time.
I find it both amusing and touching how animals respond to music. This is cool. Reminds me of the video on youtube where a guy plays Beethovens Moonlight Sonata and the Elephant comes over and listens and even starts kinda swaying to the music like he's enjoying it.
Hi, Maui Now!
Wow!!! Look how close they came to your boat! and a mama and a calf no less!! Coming close like that is not something that the mama would do lightly with her baby in tow! Brava! That bit of whale sound that you did at the end was a stroke of Genius as well. I hope I get to see lots of you doing this sort of thing. :D
It sure would be interesting to be able to record underwater sound to see if they are making sounds to sing along or responding out loud. It's pretty undeniable that they're responding are showing up and getting closer. It was beautiful thank you for sharing.
So wonderful. Best wishes from the Caribbean
one beautiful sound maker to another.
I love this clip. She's so good at her art!! vibration is how whales communicate, so it makes sense that this frequency draws them. It's beautiful that that whale is just waiting there... Watching, almost motionless... Love!
Animals are seemingly acquiring better taste in music than some of today’s youth.

I wish we were better to these mAjestic creatures. But they have been dying by injury or starvation or pollution from plastic. Thank you for a beautiful connection for a moment.
How beautiful! What a lovely piece. They really seemed to respond! Thank you.
She's amazing, on a bumpy BOAT ,to say the least!😁😍😍😍
Amen.
@@lolawants2008 yes they're blinded.. Short sighted. You have to look at the big picture. Learn something about the whales
