Fun fact: rust isn't just about water collection. Metal under stress corrodes faster. So you also rust selectively at stress foci like corners and joints regardless of whether they gather water. Painting that can help "sell" a rust effect
Great video! Love the use of neon orange in the rust. So many people just use brown or rely on rust effect paints. Rust comes in so many varied warm colors. Living in the rural midwest I see everything from almost black, to neon orange, red and even yellows.
13:36 I have been working on my TMM too. Really like how matt the barrels look! That's what I appreciate about the historical section at SMC as well. They have perfected the TMM look over the years and I try to get closer to that style. EDIT: for me the key is to glaze regular acrylics over the metallics (or go back and forth). That way you can simulate the pitted steel look. When the pigment breaks apart because you thinned the paint too much with water instead of adding a medium too, your glazes will look rough. For the above use case, this is a feature, not a bug. The black pits you see in old metal are too small to paint in this scale, but the broken up parts of pigment are small enough to represent that effect.
Great observation about ensuring a kind of balanced distribution of the brightest colours, can really make a difference and avoid something looking not quite right. Easy to think its the colour itself not seeming the right choice or if you've been over zealous with the brightness, but the distribution and continuity can be the real issue. Cheers
As a Death Guard player, I have tried a lot of different recipes for rust, but wow this is my new favorite! I would have never thought to try fluorescent orange.
I really like the way the more dulcet lime tones came out. It's like desaturated... But not 🤔 Had my eye on the pro acryl set from Louise for a while purely for the vibrancy... Bout time I got round to getting it. I'm sold.
great green, great contrasts, great rust. but the best is, that this incredible red is now showing its impact besides the finished rest. damn, that red looks great now, like on the rat ogors. thanks Vince. I'll see you next time
That red is just *chef's kiss* I started painting Skaventide with SCE side, going slowly, but can't wait to get to Skaven! Not sure about color scheme or level of quality I'd like to paint them to, but I really can't wait to start! Great tutorial for weathering and warp glow!
I always worry about any combination of red or green coming off as 'Christmassy'. You've done well, of course! :) And the rust and rotten wood and weathering helps, but I think this is a super convincing use of the red and green together.
Love that Kicken Red ! If I ever Get back to Kahdor I will be using that. I am painting the Darkoath box as I watch this, I was trying to put freckles on a modules skin tone. this did not go well I may need to strip the face and try again how would you do freckles in a pale skin tone ?
12:26 could that be a great time for a deep dive on pigments? Maybe even a hobby pigments versus art store pigment comparison? I know it's a lot to ask, but just a thought.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos! All the focus on realistic weathering and effects is fantastic, of course...any thoughts on a more comic-book style? Something like how to make cel shading look good on a 3-d surface? Many thanks!
Hope you don't mind but I gave you a shout out on a short I made on my channel. You gave me a shout out before when I did a rap each week . I'm thankful. All the best bro. If it's a bad thing I will take the short down . All the best. My channel is a big mix but I do have painting stuff on there . All the best . You are appreciated sir 😊
@VinceVenturella thank you very much. I very much appreciate all the tips n tricks etc. above all a great influence on the next generation plus old school heads in the game. I can't say thanks enough sir. Peace bro 💯 👌
What a video Vince! Thank you. It’s great to have skaven tech-specific painting videos…i want to ask: my warpstone in a light pink (fulgrim pink)at the highest point, but I am struggling to find a satisfying color for ‘tips & edges’ for warpstone’s ‘hottest points’ - what color do you suggest I use as the yellow replacement on a pink warpstone? I’ve been using white for now but i’m not fully satisfied with it
Now that you've dipped your toes into lacquer paints, would you be willing and interested in exploring those paint ranges further? I'm curious to hear your thoughts in Mr Hobby's metallic and clear paints, as well as their clear coats. There are also these Mecha Empire panel liners with a great range of colors that I'd love to see what you do with them. Cheers!
How come you start the glowy part from ivory instead of a dead white? Are you trying to keep it from being overly bright, or is there some advantage in the off white tone?
Hey fella. Hope all is good. Me and my daughter are just getting into painting and are loving your tatorial videos. Im going to start a skaven army in your honour. Im looking to get a paint set and was wondering what you recomend. My reserech beings up AK, Vallejo and army painter. (Fyi AP is the easiest of the sites to navigate)
You are a true gent indeed sir. Thank you for replying. I cant wait to watch your next skaven installment and trying (and failing haha) to replicate your red armour highlighting technique.
Hi Vince, another great video, thanks :) A little off topic but I was looking at getting the Lucent light that you promoted in a recent video and I cant find any information on the power recommendations. I live in Australia where the power output is 230 volts as opposed to the 120 in the US - do you know if it comes with an international adaptor or can it only be operated in countries with 120v? I did ask the people at Game Envy but they didn't get back to me. Anyway, I appreciate you time and If you don't know all good. Have a great week!
I mentioned some in the video, but the specific paints aren't too important. For the wood, I used black brown and mixed in red grey. For the green, it's Rogue Hobbies green and yellow from Pro Acryl.
hey vince i have a question for you that hopefully you can help me with. When I use my airbrush it spits water sometimes causing big problems for my paint job. I have the little light blue compressor from amazon thats about $90, it has a moisture trap, and i know to push up on the thing at the bottom of it, but it doesnt seem to do much. I was hoping you might have some insight into this issue. I've watched and found all your airbrush tutorials to be very helpful and they got me airbrushing more confidently, but this issue has been a real thorn in my side and makes me not want to use the airbrush. Help me Vince Venturella, you're my only hope. P.S. I love the MTG angels art!
Hard to say, it shouldn't spit water, as the cup should be full of paint. If you have water coming through the line, then something is messed up with the water trap you described. It could be something with a block in the nozzle or it could be you're getting too much moisture through the line. May want to try reconnecting and sealing everything.
A Hobby Cheating video without HC in the title? Heresy! Then again, the titles have gone from HC 461 to 466, to.. well, nothing now. We skipped a few lol
Just started painting about a month ago and I'm already so addicted to these videos lol
This is without a doubt one of, if not the best channel for learning everything you need to know about painting, and about AoS as well. Vince rulez.
Anything you could possibly need is in this video library 😅
This is the shit man💪
Welcome. Us addicts meet every Wednesday evening at around 9est. Depends if Tom is on time or not.
Awesome, glad to have you along on the hobby journey.

Love that glow! Also love that I have those paints! This paraphrase came to mind while you were talking: "If Skaven build it, it will rust".
Wonderful video….so much to learn….and always so much fun. Thank you, Vince!
My pleasure!

Yes, rust is a fascinating color, it can be really beautiful!

I watch your videos way more than I paint! They’re awesome! The effortless control at 1:13 is a joy to watch 🎨 🎉

Absolutely!
As a huge skaven fan, I absolutely adore your colour scheme and execution. Amazing eye-candy
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks stunning Vince! Nicely done

Loving watching your skaven army coming together. Great excuse to keep painting them 😉

The model looks fantastic!
As always, a great video. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into these productions!
My pleasure!
Thanks Vince, nice job
Another absolutely beautiful and stunning result Vince 1👍

"When wood gets really wet, it doesn't rust"
QFT!!!
I think Tom said he didn't like the red in one of your live streams, but man it looks hella good in this video.
I saw you at nashcon today. It was a real pleasure . ❤
I love the hobbying videos Vince. Thank you!
Nice! I was thinking about using those same ones for warp glow, good to see I'm not **totally** hopeless
Go for it!
gorgeous
This looks amazing. Lol Ninjon is doomed. Imagine challenging Vince to an Army paintoff, then watching this video.

Great work as always Vincey.
Thanks again!
Your joy bringing this sculpt to life was evident! Will you do the basing work with the model attached or make the bases and then attach?
I'll do a video for the bases as a stand-alone, but I will do all the bases separate.
What a nice model, it really makes me think a lot
ninjon subscriber here for airbrush videos, and now subbed for more of your videos too. Great portfolio you have put together
Awesome, glad to have you along on the hobby journey!
Also I would love to see a base for this guy! He looks amazing
Man, I need to get my hands on those Rogue hobbies paints, but noone of my shops in my country got them yet ;_;
Lovely Video as always Mr.V
Love that Kicken Red ! If I ever Get back to Kahdor I will be using that.

What metallics did you use for metal parts? They look slick
Vallejo Metal Color.
Yes yes.
Fantastic work. Im wondering why you didnt use the Pro Acryl Fluo Green for the Warpstone
I just like the tone of those two paints, but I certainly could have mixed some of that in as well.

just a white mixed with a fluo pink.
Thank you!🙏🏻
Vince how much are you thinning the yellow for the tubes?
Just a little to start, then glaze for the final parts.
@@VinceVenturella Thanks! Makes sense

In general, dead white is just boring, a little bit of warmth (as this will be warm) will be more natural.

Either Pro Acryl or AP Fantatic, both are wonderful ranges and very user friendl.

As far as I know, it's 110-240 certified, so shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks @@VinceVenturella :)
Do you have a paint list for what you used, please ?
