Coldstream Guards are formidable guard units, possessing slightly better charge, defense, and reloading skills than Foot Guards. This puts them in between Old Guard and Foot Guards, marking them as the second best guard infantry in the game. They are, however, limited to only one regiment.
The Old Guard are the best elite infantry in the game, with unmatched stats across the board. Their ability to scare enemies in their vicinity is unique to them. This, combined with their deadly skills at both ranged and melee combat, means that they can usually rout most enemies in short order. Like all infantry, however, they are vulnerable to artillery (their status as the best infantry in the game makes them an attractive artillery target) and being attacked from the flanks or rear. Their very high cost is also an issue, particularly in multiplayer, where limited funds means that a heavy reliance on Old Guard means having to make do with an inferior army in other regards. The Old Guard are also the only default guard unit that is limited to three regiments (other factions may recruit four), though France can supplement this with other guard units such as Young Guard and Guard Seamen. The Old Guard's fear ability mean that they are at their most useful toward the end of battles, where morale penalties from casualties sustained or generals killed mean that many units have shaky morale. Though Old Guard can only be trained at staff colleges, the highest level military building, France starts the Grand Campaign with one regiment of them. This regiment can prove pivotal in the early game, when no other faction can field line infantry nearly as skilled. As staff colleges may only be built in capital regions of any faction, it is normally considerably more difficult to recruit and replace Old Guards that are lost far from France.

British are extremely op in this game. They have both the best infantry and best navy.
Sure I know that their units are very costly, but still, I doubt a normal british musketeers, historically being a drunkard that was kidnaped from a pub and forced to serve, is better than standing army of Frenchmen that consist of battle hardened soldiers
@@hannibalburgers477 pretty sure during that time the french battle hardened soldiers are replace by newer less experience ones. Due to all the losses they suffered.

@@hannibalburgers477 actually, the British Army didn't do that and relied on volunteers. They navy however, did that quite a lot. After Napoleon's retreat from Russia, he summoned 200,000 Teenage Conscripts to fight since he lost +400,000 veterans of La Grande Armee.
Fun fact: both of them really faced each other at waterloo, except that the coldstream were actually hiding

@@capablemachine I thought they were the highlanders. And I heard that the terrain already made them hard to get hit by the artillery, they were hiding to encourage the old guard to attack a supposedly weak point.

That's why Napoleon is my favorite total war, elite units flee when peasants would in other total wars, just makes the game more realistic

The Coldstream guards are only (were as of the anniversary edition) available through DLC.
Ironically I played with Great Britain most of my hours, only to realize I had in the game's box a code that unlocked them. I could have used them all along.

@Avan Thats why you had to be clever and not just throw units against each other 1v1. the defenders always have the advantage especially in that era but simplifying it is not the way to do it IMO, which is why i don't really like the newer Total wars.

The Dutch invented platoon firing using three ranks which meant one rank knelt while firing and the third rank fired between the shoulders of the second rank. All three ranks fired simultaneously and then reloaded before firing by platoon.
The British adopted and perfected the method by removing the kneeling rank and instead having the famous 'Thin Red Line'. Two ranks of men, drawn up into platoons, each platoon firing after the one of their right so that the battalion was always giving fire. The two ranks gave the men more space to reload and also meant they took fewer casualties from artillery. It did however make them even more vulnerable to cavalry than a three rank line.
The French meanwhile had trouble with the method and so their standard drill was fire by rank throughout the 18th century; one rank firing, kneeling and reloading while the next rank fired over their heads and so on. This drastically slowed their rate of fire as loading a musket while kneeling is awkward, even more so as French troops rarely practiced with live ammunition.
Fire by rank was commonly used while in square formation against cavalry as a means of ensuring there was always at least one rank of men loaded and able to give fire.
Volley fire and fire by rank drills are rarely portrayed accurately in films and on TV.
Don't mess with the Old guard.

@@betterthanyou877 I cannot test them in melee combat because I cannot control the AI's behavior. It always opens fire when in firing range.

A little unbalanced, old guard got their shots off before the coldstreams so truth is it was rigged from the start…
I'd say the impact of that was marginal. The deciding factor here was the morale rating.

Que avance la vieja guardia y que la de colstein este quieta y con unos árboles haciendo de cobertura aver cual gana, ahí k reconocer k está toda la unidad al descubierto pero tiene el lateral derecho metido en unos arbustos y arbol y eso para las balas en campo abierto y avanzando los franceses creo k tendría otro resultado la batalla
Normalmente la unidad que avanza es la que recibe más bajas por ello la de colstein está en desventaja

Cũng không có ích gì vì đội tấn công chỉ hạ được 89 lính, còn lại chết 103 lính. Đội kia bắn trước vẫn thiệt.
I believe coldstream guards still exists today. They were in Gulf war, Iraq war, Bosnia war.
