    There are no bad seasons of Buffy. Even season one with its campiness is so good and special. Season 4 isnt specifically higher in fans ranking just because it is placed between the old fan fav iconic first 3 seasons and the last more mature and deeper seasons. The meta narrative of all the characters trying to find themselves after high school while the show literally tries to find itself after the high school setting is very well done, imo. That’s one of the points. They are no longer in high school and all are facing life. It would be great going to class, trading barbs with Cordy, and fighting with good versus evil. Life does not present easy answers or questions. Your reactions are entertaining but please remember that the show at its core is the journey and attempt of Buffy to become a strong, independent, confident woman that has the capacity to give love , understand true forgiveness, and learn to love herself. That is the real struggle and keep that in mind when thinking about the story afterwards.

      Buffy does that all the time, there is in S2 when she claims to never having played doctor (and Cordy says "oh right.."), then in S3 there are two instances, once with Ford where she claims that she listened to "when I touch myself" when moping over Ford but didn't know what the lyrics was about, then Faith with hungry and horny, here in S4 when talking to Eddie she pretends to "not watch porn" and changes it to "cutting way down on it". All that happened to him was a result of his planned intent. So not a victim. Do you mean the monster that he created? That was not a victim, either, as it demonstrated volition and was therefore responsible for the consequences of its actions. Adam is not a victim, either. Walsh was supposed to be the big bad of the season but like Seth Green, Lindsay Crouse wanted to be released early because she had been offered a role. Joss Whedon agreed but it meant last minute rewrites, which is why the season suddenly changes direction as seen in this story. It would have been interesting to see what their original intentions were.

    Note that the stitched-together guy in camo on the table may not have originally been a human named Adam. Given that name's association with Genesis, it might instead indicate that Walsh sees him as the first of a new breed (and perhaps herself as God).

    The problem with Season4, and this isn't really a spoiler at this point since you literally just saw Walsh die. But the actress playing Walsh needed out of her contract for personal reasons. So that necessitated very late-stage writing changes for the rest of the season. She was intended to be the big bad. In the same way in Season2 "The Anointed One" was supposed to be the villain but then the actor hit puberty and they needed to pivot to Spike/Angelus.

    • @Henrik_Holst
      @Henrik_Holst 2 месяца назад +2

      no that is just a fan myth, Walsh was written to die in this episode once casting was done. There might have been an early draft of the script where she lived for a bit longer but it all changed when they cast Lindsay Crouse, when they got her they knew that they would only be able to have her in very few episodes so the script was rewritten at this early during production.
      *** spoliers ***
      remember that she comes back in episode 20 and 21, that would not have happened if she had "gotten out of her contract" or left in anger (another popular myth is that she clashed with Joss). The truth is simply that they got a famous actress with limited access to her time.

    Season 5 is my #1, season 4 is #2 for the high quality of the individual episodes. All that happened in this one should have been drawn out longer (same with the Oz story line) but Lindsay Crouse (Prof. Walsh) decided to exit the show early. The overall season arc was affected but it's still great. For a different view of the actress check out the "Columbo" episode 'Sex and the Married Detective' from 1989.

      I believe the last scene in Hush where Reilly came to Buffy's dorm was an extended shot of them just sitting that was tacked on as a post credit scene. I'm not even really a dog person, but the way your beautiful pooch communicated with you at the end of that video was just adorable - but that's off-topic! I have always found season 4 to be quite underrated, as we really see the characters grow into their new adult lives and how this affects the group dynamic. Seasons 2 and 3 are my absolute favourites, because they still have a darker vibe. Season 5 is the last "good" season, in my humble view, though it is uneven throughout. After that, the tonal shift kind of ruins the show for me, despite some decent standalone episodes. It just doesn't feel like the same series any longer and comic relief element becomes too prevalent.

    The thing you are missing with Willow is just the context of when this show was airing. It was a different time.
    Walsh was intended to be the seasons big bad but the actress quit for another gig forcing them to write her out here, which also changed the course of the season arc. The season arc really suffers for that which is why it's not generally peoples favorite. But there are a lot of great stand alone episodes in 4.

      Also remember that Green was going to stay longer but his movie commitment changed just before filming started and that caused changes to the original story boarding. • @OldManFerdiad
      @OldManFerdiad 2 месяца назад

      I really also think that this episode is a bit of a character assassination of Walsh that heavily implies that, instead of being the previously established highly intelligent if somewhat ruthlessly pragmatic leader of a top secret military science team, she's a creepy voyeur who is possessively jealous of Riley to the extend of attempting to murder his superpowered girlfriend in a really sloppily executed plan. JW also kills her mid-monologue which is by now his favourite way to smack down characters he wants the audience to think less of (Spike, Ethan, now Walsh).
      The best villains believe they are right, Walsh would have been so much better if she'd been written as steadfastly calculating to the end, using her world-renowned psychological acumen to test the Scoobies to their limit. Instead we get this.

      The story that Walsh's actress had to leave early, forcing a rewrite of the season, circulates frequently around the fandom, but I've never heard an authoritative source (and the actress herself has denied it when asked, saying she did exactly as many episodes as she contracted for). There could be a source out there I haven't encountered, if so I'd be interested to hear more. But I suspect instead that the reason fans believe the story is that season 4's arc is generally less liked, so they're eager to believe something better was planned. Having Walsh survive seems plausible for that, since in a Frankenstein story you'd normally have the creator around to be tormented by the creature's rebellion, and with Walsh gone it feels like a piece is missing.

    Seven or eight apocalypses thwarted(so far), scores of vamps and demons slain in nightly mortal combat for years...by a lone 5'4" 120 pound teenage girly girl who fights in heels and halter tops.
    As opposed to squads of strapping, 6 feet plus, drug enhanced special operations commandos armed with state of the art ranged weaponry..the top gun of whom has killed 17 "HSTs".
    So you send a couple of non -descript demons to murder her and blithely assume she's dead?
