Joss Whedon actually told an interviewer that it had been his plan from the outset to have one of Buffy's friends be gay. This is why he had the interaction between Larry and Xander that he did, as well as why Willow made the observation she did about her vampire self, which led to Buffy shushing Angel.

So, there's this really famous movie that I'm not sure if you've seen yet so I won't say the name, but the first half focuses on a woman who you *think* is going to be the main character throughout, but then she gets killed by the *real* monster of the movie, and then *he* becomes the focus. That's sort of what this season of Buffy is like, with Maggie being the focus for the first half, but then Adam kills her and becomes the true "big bad". That mixed with the Frankenstein story makes for a...pretty interesting storyline.

Text T's were like a fashion thing at the time and the show kinda made a bit of a joke about throwing the most random ones they could find on people.
I think a lot of people really don't think about Riley's trauma this season very much, and granted part of that is we have such a limited perspective on it, but it's insane how much he goes through in such a short time. This guy was just some normal dude, pledged his life to military service out of a desire to do good and ends up fighting against literal horror movie monsters. Then in the span of like a couple weeks he learns he was violated in mind and body by the person he trusted, had his entire lifes work called into question and simultaneously now has to cope with the idea that there could be literal demons that are not actually evil. If you pulled the Doom Slayer aside and told him that some of those demons he's butchering are actually good he'd think you were insane, especially when he's literally never met one that hasn't actually killed people and hasn't tried to kill him or his friends.

One of the strengths of Buffy are the very satisfying kick ass scenes. Buffy on the monitor telling Walsh…” you really don’t know what a Slayer is”. All time great moment . Many episodes are elevated because of how 1 scene can make episodes , years, and plots all worth the struggle. All I have to do is tell a Buffy fan…. The Prom.. and memories go back to a speech and a simple little umbrella. That final 10 minutes make The Prom a favorite. Same in this episode. Start the scene with Walsh talking with Riley and every fan moves their eyes to the background, waits, sees the picture on the monitor slightly move… and then we all smile when we see Buffy and wait to hear her say… “ Professor Walsh”. Then it’s a great episode

  • @Buffy8Fan

Calling the 314 monster Adam is not reference to Adam and Eve. At least not directly. It is a reference to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Frankenstein's creation turns to Frankenstein and says "I aught to be your Adam." That Frankenstein has made himself into god by creating life. Prof. Walsh has done the same thing, she played god by creating Adam. Even Adam killing the child in this episode is a reference to Frankenstein.

Forrest wasn't mad about Buffy being Riley's second in command because he wanted power: if that's what he wanted he'd be happy about it, since when they split into two teams he was put in command of his unit. Instead he was jealous: "*I* am Riley's sidekick! It's always been that way! Who's this newcomer coming between us?" He was perfectly happy for Riley to have a girlfriend-- it's not *that* kind of jealousy-- but when she gets into their team that's another thing. You could kinda sorta say that Forrest sees himself as Sam and Riley as Frodo, which makes Buffy Gollum.

@@lahalhalhabecause it’s fine to make your own head canon in these types of situations. If you think it’s not romantic, cool. Me personally, I think it’s a neat concept that Forest is on the DL and secretly loves Riley more than a friend but Riley as a mid western boy next door would never notice and only sees him as a good friend. It’s tragic for Forest in that way and kinda gives him more character. Again, in head canon only. Yes bros can love each other without one or both being gay but sometimes it’s just that. One of them is gay but is too afraid to come out and ruin the bond. Especially in the late 90s/early 2000s military.

either interpretation is entirely consistent with the text. being able to publicly perform an attraction to women was an important part of "passing". buffy joins the team *because* she's gotten much closer to riley. the show doesn't portray any in-between state where buffy and riley are definitely an item but he hasn't yet brought her in. so there's nothing in the text to make any easy distinction about the nature of forrest's jealousy.

Another excellent reaction. Glad you saw so much with Willow and Tara on your edit. There was a lot going on in Episode 13 and it’s easy to overlook subtleties. That’s classic Buffy. Many things are happening and the focus is on one thing and other critical events are happening.
Do not be surprised how your views on this show are and will change. Many people ( including reactors) have started this show with little expectations and with the understandable idea it’s just a teen Vampire show. For some the change is after a specific episode, some about a story line, and for most it’s a slow build that you suddenly realize how much a show and its characters matter Glad you are getting there and welcome . Hate to tell you but the journey is just getting revved up and the next 74 episodes are going to be a ride like no other. A reference to Frankenstein using science to make himself into god by creating life. Some confuse this to mean that the creation is named Adam, but it is not. It should be noted that in the story, the creation is not the monster in the story, rather Frankenstein himself is the monster. Another thing that gets confused in pop culture.

Adams true human identity is never confirmed in the show. However there have been comments by show creators and writers that Adam was supposed to be the remains of Dr. Walsh's biological son, who was a military soldier killed in action, as a result of a possible demon attack or discovery. @@davepicardo1605yes, agreed, I get the bros before hos energy from Forest. The misogyny is strong with that one. Not saying it's impossible he's gay, but I don't think that's what's being depicted.

@@davepicardo1605sometimes what the writer intends on the page is different from what comes out on the screen. And we can enjoy it on both levels.

So far it’s only open to what the viewer feels. BTVS is very good at believing the audience is smart and is able to follow and create logical and plausible explanations and conclusions. Not everything has to be tied up and concluded instantly .

It's not ordinary nostalgia, it's a true case of 'everything was better in the past'. Good writing stands the test of time and on current shows, one can find decent special effects, but only pretty one dimensional characteres and predictable storylines. The content quality goes south, since while the quantity exploded in the streaming era, the number of talented writers and/or the will to take a risk by the services didn't increase. There other factors as well, but i think one can get the idea from the stuff above.

14:08 - 14:17 I've watched enough episodes of"Law&Order-SVU"to know that different weapons leave different marks and different materials on the victim and I'm 100% *sure* a wooden stake wouldn't leave the same mark of a polgara's stake and it would leave wooden traces, which I'm sure a polgara's stake wouldn't leave. So what I'm trying to say is...fuck you,Forrest, you're an incompetent idiot!😤
    16:18 - 16:45 *YES!* 😠 16:46 - 16:57 😄🤍❤ 21:05 - 21:31 😶 22:12 - 22:15 *HEY!!!>:-O* DON'T TOUCH MY WILLOW!!!!
26:34 - 26:53 Oh,so _that's_ why he stuck with the Scoobies instead of just keep fighting random demons for fun. I didn't remember that. Still...why didn't he leave Sunnydale to look for someone who could take the chip out of him?🤔

These last few episodes is where I'm like, "Why is Buffy not killing Spike?"
I know all the meta reasons why, but story wise it makes zero sense. They don't need him for intel, he's still openly hostile to the group, and even with the chip he is still a highly dangerous and evil monster, yet here he is just hanging out at Giles' place being a snarky ass, like he's one of the gang. I do like the character but his role in the show at this point is beyond dumb.

21:29 You’ll find out why Tara did that… much later lol. They really played the long game with that one which is so cool. I love it when the Buffy people do that. It’s yet another reason it’s the best TV show ever.

Forrest is definitely a Misogynist. Which is why he didn't like Buffy. We see this is other parts too. He objectified Buffy before Riley started to date her, he laughed at Parkers toilet joke about women. Feeling replaced by a woman despite it meaning he got his own command...
