Dan can you stay in a hotel room for a month or two? Is it expensive?
Amazing content, I like the fact that you keep it real and make it relatively easy for foreigners to understand the Korean housing system better. for a temporary stay of 3 wks to a month I will most likely look into an air b&b as it may be my own option. I would like to spend 1 wk in JeJu and the rest of my time in and around Seoul, Incheon and Busan to be able to take in amazing sunsets and some sun rises along with some trails to hike and learn about the cultural history firsthand once travelling becomes less complicated from Canada.

Hey Dan! I am slowly but surely going through all your channel‘s content. I think this video is so helpful. I am not planning on living in Korea but the tips you gave here are helpful in looking for apartments elsewhere, too. I think here in Germany, people pay 2-3 months rent as deposit and is used by the owner just in case there are repairs that need to be made to the house after your stay, so you may or may not get i back, depending on how you treated the apartment. There are also sharehouses here, but not very common. I saw a documentary once about Goshiwons a couple of months back and it seems pretty claustrophobic, but it does serve its purpose if you need „inexpensive“ housing for a short period of time. Although $300 for a room like that compared to what you‘re paying for your current apartment…. (the deposit, though…) Have a great day!

This is the second video that talks good about Jeonse! I'd love to see a video explaining it in great detail; preferably with an expert on the subject or if anyone could refer me to a video please.
In fact, the deposit is very large and it is natural mainly for young people not to be able to rent a house easily. Fortunately in Greece this policy does not apply, the most common is to pay 2 rents up front. Of course the rents here also depend on the area, the square meters of the house and the facilities that it offers you (for example a house in Athens 80m² can cost 700€ while on my island it does not exceed 400€). Great video very well done and easy to follow. Your friend is so handsome also. I would be very nervous to do Jeonse because what happens if they run off with the money. You don’t have any ownership of the property to protect you. Maybe I didn’t understand how it works. I thought the rents were pretty low compared to rent in California USA.

This was super informative. Yea I heard another Korean RUclipsr said housing is so hard there and many end up living with parents longer than say like Americans right. What’s the average age Children there launch out? My daughter jokes that she’ll still be here ten more years at least. I’m like “girl, you’ll be 28!! Lol” hope not we’ll see tho.

I chose the house basedon the needs of the moment, I was studying alone so it could also be very small, I was studying in the library so I did not need a large house, now that I have a family the need are different, we are not rented because we have bought the house, is a villa with a garden where the dog Buffy can run and play and the house is large and confortable is the house to live forever. Everyone should choose the house according to the needs of that moment, of life of money....Good Christmas Eve have a nice evening.

It seems it would be wiser to go ahead and get a loan for the deposit and use that money for investment. Better returns. My daughter will be attending KU in the fall for her masters and we are looking into living options. You gave fresh information from other videos. Thank you.

lol that's why the scene in Hellbound where it shows the leader of that religion living there has a bigger impact on Koreans. it kind represents humble(even low) living and for a leader of a pseudo-religion living in such places shows that he's real about what he believe in. I’m a leasing apartment consultant in the United state the cost for rent over there is so much more then the United state . Maybe like New York Is very expensive but it sounds like Korea is more expensive.

Have you or anyone you know had trouble with getting the security deposit back? What happens in a case like this? Also have you ever stayed in an Airbnb in Korea? What's the going rate for an Airbnb in Korea for one person? What areas would be safe for a senior person to stay outside of Seoul? If I come to Korea I would want to stay outside of the city. It's probably cheaper also.
When I get ready to move to a place I usually find out where the nearest police station is, Fire Department, hospital and emergency medical transport are. Also where the nearest pharmacy is and if they are open late. Right now my building is nextdoor to the police station... The pharmacy is a five minute walk. Plus they deliver if needed. Nearest hospital is 10 minutes away. Probably less by Ambulance. Fire Department is less than half mile away. Lots of stores and restaurants around. Train station is less than a mile away and goes directly into NYC and many other places. Then there's Uber and buses. I wouldn't recommend taking a bus around here ... Not very efficient. Oh forgot to mention that security deposits here for rentals is usually a month and a half rent plus first months rent before you move in. So if your rent is $2000 a month for a one bedroom apartment... ( Most included heat and hot water) You would have to pay upfront $5000. This is just an example... Rents variety depending on where you want to live. Usually if the rent is very low for the area it means it's basically not a safe place to live.

Interesting. That's an option. I can sell my home for $500.000.00 (5 hundred thousand). I may do that an come and see what I can purchase. It's just me and no one else. I would like to stay in the countryside if possible, away from lots of people. This is so interesting. The deposits that the Realtors ask for is outrageous!!!

Sink water pressure isn't an issue, but holy hell does it bother me when toilet water pressure is so low that you have to flush more than once just for a small amount of toilet paper.
Luckily, this isn't a common issue in houses unless their old as dirt 🤣.
The toilet is the same…. so we have to flush in the middle 😂😂😂

Hey Dan, Thank you for this information. I do want to ask something though...when I was looking for possible English teaching jobs, they never told me that I needed $10,000 to rent. The school usually pays for it or covers part of it so is it different if you come to Korea with a work contract already? $10,000 I will never have so if they do require this, I guess I will never be able to live there, which is good to know in the end but I was still curious, in case you knew of course. All the other points, super good to know when it comes to looking for a place, anywhere really. :)

They have some places with lower deposits and sometimes with almost no deposits for foreigners but the rent is usually higher. If you come for work .. (from what I’ve heard) some offer aid with housing but not sure about this

I am currently in Korea and need to find housing before moving to Seoul at the end of the month. After watching your video, I have a few remaining questions.
1. How early should one start looking for housing in Korea? (In relations to when you need to move)
2. How quickly do apartments listing get taken after being posted?
3. Any advise if you do not know anyone that speaks fluent Korean to tag along? (Can I hire you as a guide? 😅)
4. Do you have to make an appointment with a realtor office or are walk-ins ok?
1. I started checking my options 1-2months before ( but I was already living in a place and if I find something I really like I could move out -just have to pay double rent) I would say 2-4 weeks in general
2. Really depends .. good deals go super fast. If something has been out on the market for a long time, you need to be suspicious
3. I think you can find translators online… Or there are useful apps like papago…haha I’m sure in certain areas where a lot of foreigners live like Itaewon, hongdae, there will be agents who speaks english.
4. you can book or walk in! you can just go and leave your info and your budget and the type of the house you are looking for and they call you back when there’s something new :)

David : no Dan: kidnaps him to his video anyway :-) Looks like tricks and traps while trying to find an apartament are universal all over the world. Here people often remodel older, bigger apartments into such things as you call goshiwon and advertise them as "ideal for students or workers in their first post-grad jobs". But usually you stay there much longer than this cause of the prices of rent and/or purchase of your own apartament. Some of them have really weird arrangement where you can't open the door fully cause they hit a cupboard or some pipe that has to be forced to run there becouse of the redevelopment from bigger place, where it was not needed there.
I know you made this video awhile ago and I’ve been debating whether to ask on here or not because of that and you made the one video saying you don’t respond to DMs anymore no matter what the nature of it is. I tried. 😂(Totally understandable though, some people can be disrespectful to you and your privacy.) But I felt it was weird to ask on your newest video because this is a house/apartment related question, lol. I’m a bit of an overthinker if you can’t tell. 😂 Anyways, I’m going to be studying abroad in Korea and I want to live in Incheon because it’s cheaper than living in Seoul. What are the best parts of Incheon to live in for solo students? Or what would you recommend?

I wouldn’t recommend getting a place in incheon just for the price… it depends on where you will study? I think you need to decide that first and consider your options! There are affordable places in Seoul also so it’s really important to set where you will study & what your vibe is first

For sharehouses you can check online. usually there are ads on facebook groups and craigslist (but there are weirdos on craigslist .. so be careful) If you google there are few websites I think!

well if you can’t get a loan you would probably have to rent it which is kind of hard to find. the rent would be somewhere around 1000-1500$ but the deposit will be expensive

Are you kidding... that's expensive when you consider needing to have nearly $10k just to get in the place. It may be cheaper rent, monthly, but not many people have $10,000 on hand and could never even get into a place if this was a thing in the US.
@@Krystal109 That's what goshiwans or parent's spare bedrooms are for. And you get the 10k back after the lease is over so once you save it once you're set. Anyone that's been working for a year or two should have that saved. I don't make a lot in america but I have more than that in the bank. Plus if you don't want a full apartment and instead want a studio, the deposit and rent could be even less. It all depends on the landlord and your negotiation skills
hmm i think houses in Korea are not affordable at all.. people give up buying houses because it’s getting more and more expensive. And same goes for rent. for a decent but tiny studio apartment paying 800-1000$ and paying 20,000-30,000$ deposit is quite lot for people who just start working…
@@ThizisDanny it seems like rent is only that much in the best areas of seoul, And even that is still cheap compared to any desirable city in america (once you have the deposit saved). I pay 1300 for a crappy apartment that is basically falling apart in texas. It’s not even in a good area. Your apartment in incheon is bigger, nicer and cheaper. I know someone in busan who lives right on gwangalli beach for $600/month in a 원룸 (with 10k deposit). That’s unimaginable in the USA.
@@WhatIsThis-zq4hk Well, yea, there are cheap places in the US too if you're willing to have a lower standard of living or live in certain areas / states like the midwest.
In the US and Korea you get what you pay for based on area. I don't live in San Francisco or the east bay in California, so the mortgage on my house is about $1000 for a 4 bedroom / 2 bath. The amount is that low because I choose to not live in a metropolitan city... and commute 2 hrs to San Francisco for college instead. If I lived in the east bay... my rent would be closer to $1800 and I'd have no equity.
Don't forget that Danny isn't actually paying $600 a month for rent. He basically got a loan to cover the cost of the lease (which was about $300k if I recall) and he's paying $600 a month on the LOAN interest. This was a cheaper option than actually renting an apartment in the same area, which is why he choose that, but loans always cost more in the long run than actually paying rent month to month.
