What I appreciated most about Nicky was that he wasnt an elitist or thought himself better than anyone else. He greeted everyone with a smile and treated anyone who came into the shop the same, whether you were a famous dj, producer or punter. Respect.
Had breakfast with Nicky at Macy Ds after one nation United colours pt2 2000, I was off my rocker chewing he’s ear off asking him the name of every tune I couldn’t find at the time as social media was next to non existent, great fella even as a 40 year old man now I still look back at them years n feel blessed how lucky I was to love jungle raving… 💎✊♥️
The Hyper D and Blackmarket sets are legendary
Roast 4th birthday bash him and Nicky!! Best set ever and if you want another good set dj hype and hyper d one nation payback 1998!
Believe
1994 i was 12 I met the promoter of Teenrage and he asked me .. if you could have anyone play at the next event who would it be? Black market Stevie H D I said! … Brentford fountain leisure centre 5 weeks later we got our wish!!!!! 💥💥💥😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥 it was a carbon copy of the Telepathy , Roast or Jungle fever sets we had on tapes 💯
It was so difficult hearing about Stevie Hyper D's passing from Nicky's account. Skiba is now with you up there. They'll never be forgotten!!
Spent so many hours in black market (and unity) in the early 90’s. Such a lovely bloke 👍🏻
The social history in this interview is immense. Incredible discussion. I can't stop bigging you up!! Thank you guys!!
Always remember Nicky being a nice guy. 13 buying tunes. 17 years old dropping off flyers for our party. He took a few mins to chat about what we were doing, even offered to do a set. Most other shops ignored us.
That’s what you call proper customer service. 💯
@@LondonSomething1994 It’s missing from DnB / Music these days
Always have time for Nicky and the whole BM crew. Ray, Ash, Clive, Clarkee and Roger always looked after me. Family vibes in the store. Nicky is the nicest man in dnb
True ambassador of the scene. Nicky was hard DJ to play after because his selection was always the second to none. Black Market Records was a big part of my youth growing up I wanna take time to thank Nicky, Ash-a-Tack, Ray, Crazy Legs, Profile, Sarah and all the crew that used to work there. I miss that era and get sad how the record shops slowly started to disappear from our community. BM Records was a community hub!! Glad to see Nicky championing the new sound!!
I've met Nicky a few times great guy always happy. Glad to of gone to Blackmarket records back in the late ninetys. ❤legendary 🙌
Man, i used to love it back in the day when Blackmarket used to mix Original nutter into The Chopper tune! Whenever he would do that at a rave the place would go absolutely insane!
Will always give you props Nicky, thanks for the love you showed me at black market records and raves ❤️ RIP Skibadee RIP Stevie Hyper D
What I miss about buying records is that I loved the sleeves in them. It was like a package with a lot of information, pictures and so on. Buying a mp3 is not the same to put it mildly!
To true. Even the buzz of going into a record shop, handeling the vinyl and the needle arm of the deck.
I miss the smell that vinyl and the sleeves had when you took the vinyl out
Hear you there mate , loved the art on the sleeves and was nice having an object instead of thin air, and was great visiting the record shop with friends, picking up flyers, rave tickets, also record sales etc went back into the industry helping them host events etc ..stopping vinyl is killed the scene
And going there and snagging test presses meeting other music lovers
@@roostaraver Vinyl has had a resurgence over the last few years. I don't think it's the lack of vinyl that's killing the scene. I cant deny that record shops were a massive part of the scene in the early years, but its not sustainable with the streaming services. People don't buy music in the same way anymore. People don't shop for anything in the same way.
Bandcamp is changing the landscape thankfully but it costs a lot of money to press records. Back in the day you could test press a few thousand records and pretty much guarantee getting your money back so you could press some more. It was never about making money really, but you mostly didn't lose money in the hey day of vinyl in the 90s. The sheer quantity of record shops to distribute your music through was incredible. These days with business rates and competition through online shops it's impossible to have that number of record shops open. It's a combination of things that lead to where we are at in the scene. Not just vinly sales or record shops.
Listening to these interviews has been bitter sweet. I just wanna take this space to say what so many have failed to do and thats say a massive THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the most important people in the scene. The people that dedicated their time and their hard earned over the years to attending and supporting the events. The people with the energy and vibe that made being in events, on the dance floor and raves such an 'INCREDIBLE' experience. You people who always lived by the code of Love, Respect & Unity and always exuded that, for me personally that was what always bought me home (tho i havent been home for a long while now) Its those experiences, those meetings with people whom i shared encounters with inside and outside the raves that made me laugh and feel loved, that represented what it means to be 'ONE FAMILY'. It has been the most outstanding experience of my life to have been part of that and been accepted into that, its that very very special experience that has formed much of who i am as a person and remains much of what i live by and for. So to all you Original Nuttahs out there that kept the faith, where ever you are, much love and respect from me .K.❤
Thanks K. Indeed if not for the faithful, that being everyone who turned out week after week, to submerge themselves in the culture, there would't be one. Thank you every single one of you. 🙏🏾
Love your viewpoint raves.
I feel it was more an interrogation than interview
Just a great bloke.
I grew up in Birmingham as a teen so would always go to Tempest records basement but once I was old enough would get the train down to London just to go to Blackmarket, stock up on white labels to impress my mates. He was always down that basement grinning away, what a positive guy. Great DJ too.
I used to shop in Tempest too
@@pablogdjuk I miss that place
And swordfish and get ready for a rave at qué club or hit medicine bar
@@pablogdjukTempest, HTFR and Music Exchange by Chineese quarter were places to go :)
I have such a fond memory of getting the train up from Basingstoke at 15 to visit Blackmarket Records. Walking down those stairs and seeing Nicky and Ray was so cool as a kid.
I spent many many many hours in the basement of Blackmarket Records in my teens. Respect to The Kennington Crew. Arfa G, Clarkee, Roachman. Also respect to TNT and Madmix, and Kenny Charles.
Big up Ron and Nicky Blackmarket. Was emotional when he was talking about Stevie Hyper D, then finding out about Skibadee later that day. Rip Skibadee
Thank you as this challenging time in our scenes history bares down on us.
Bullseye the target, sound of the Nicky Blackmarket! Spam for ya mam!
I remember going to record shops just for the flyers for my bedroom. Age 14 before i even got my 1st set of decks. Ha
RIP Skiba and Hyper D - never forgotten legends
Never ever ever forgotten ✨🙏🏾✨
Always remember going to bm soho on weekends particularly on Sundays and could just chat to nicky about anything and everything for hours including his love of qpr.Proper down to earth bloke without any air of arrogance about him. Will aways be a legend in the dnb/jungle scene
I love these vids boys as someone who was juuuuust that bit too young to be out and about in the late 80s early 90s.....Born in 79 so by the time all the eclipse and amnesia and stuff was going off i was heavy into all the tape packs...It wasn't til much later when dreamscape and stuff we started to go out but i remember 91 92 just hoarding tapes from all the early raves...Beautiful times...Childhood was most def way different in the 80s we would be out in the morning be miles from home doing allsorts.....when you think back it's crazy the dangerous shit we were doing as little kids....Beautiful times.
BIG up from Toronto
Love nicky and ray Keith my collection definitely prospered long term, miss going to record shops meeting people and connecting 😩
Record shopping days were a day trip 😆
Black Market was centrally the most important record shop in London if not the England for Jungle and DNB. Don't get me wrong there were other great outlets but I am sorry nobody got the selection and variety of tunes like them. Also the way they treated customers. Nicky would give me exclusive tracks when most records shops would sell me those kinda tunes because I was kid and nobody in the music world but he showed us respect and love. The few times I played out alongside him he was a right bubble always happy and smiling like he is here. Nothing but love for what he's done and continues to do. Another inspirational figurehead.
@@TakeMeBackPirateRadio how i wish i could’ve stepped foot in there :( i remember the time i searched it up n finding it to be shut forever haha alas. it’s great to read about

How does this channel not have more subs? you'd think way more Jungle heads would be all over this kind of content.
He's bang-on about sweating it out in a dance🤭😅😂
I remember being in Wonderland (Lea Bridge rd) pre-Jungle. Hardcore was playing mostly and i would be jumping about before 'bosching bumbles' for 7 hours desperate to hear "Way in my brain" or some other tune with a Ragga B-line❣️
Watching this with mixed emotions after hearing the sad news about Skibba . This is exactly what I need though to keep me of social media as it’s so upsetting. Massive loss to the scene ….RIP Skibba aka dnb legend . Ron please do a podcast telling his legacy x
Yes it’s been one of the hardest time for our scene. Would love to do a piece on Skibba but it would be a totally different format to the podcasts.
“This is the untold story of Jungle.” 💯💪💥💥💥
These interviews are top class
I have not binged watched them all at once like I normally do with new discoveries
They are too good for that
One-at-a-time
Wow that is amazing. So pleased the episodes are having such an impression on you. Thanks ever so much for your support.
Respect Nicky, i always remember coming to see you, once in 97 you had the first test presses of my tune Reminiscence on Mix n Blen, i was only 17 and you gave me the time for a good chat, told me not to watch the politics in the scene and do my own thing, then gave me a few white labels to take away. Great days sir. Mace.
Before that in 95 i was 15 and came down from Worthing to buy Pulp Fiction, i wanted Ray to autograph the label for me but was too shy at that age, my old man went back in and asked Ray, who happily signed it for me. Still got that copy to this day..
I bet that £70 worth of records is worth £570 in discogs right now! :) Great interview by the way.
Big up Nicky for always helping the younger generation. I know you and Ron brought through the youth when a lot people kept their doors firmly shut on people. Big up the Kartoons Records crew!!!
Thanks and really pleased you enjoyed this episode.
@@LondonSomething1994 I really did enjoy it and those within our circle did too. Just really cut up about Skibadee's death. I was wondering if you could get a few people to talk about his work, character and life. Maybe Ash-A-Tack, Shabba D, Eastman and Harry Shotta. Since Tenor Fly's passing I have never felt such a big loss in our scene. We are still in shock.
Stevie smashed it in Toronto the week before he died. The set is on RUclips.
Top form.
Another legend! I'll never forget the first time I listened to Helter Skelter Energy 1997 ft Stevie hyper D. Crazy energy. Thanks for these amazing talks.
Wicked!!!
🙏🏾
Another great watch! good work guys. I remember my weekly commute into London from Bedford every Saturday at the age of 16 on my own just to buy vinyl, and the lust of flicking through my record bag of shiny vinyl on the train back home. Happy days indeed :)
Great memories of the record shopping day trip
These interviews are absolute gold. Big up Ron…. Sterling work. Look forward to many many more.
RIP Skibs
Brilliant show! I remember a few nervous visits to Blackmarket Records, walking down the stairs and getting blown away! What a place and what a lovely bloke!
i love thes d&b interviews ive wondered for 25 years what these folk lives were like
Legend Nicky Blackmarket Come from Kennington Fun times. Love Nicky's story of going up.
What a story.
Has growing up
Brilliant watch this, used to love going blackmarket records on a Saturday get me tape pack and rave ticket. Man they were good ol days, RIP SKIBA 🙏🏻
What a lovely bloke Nicky is & great dynamic between the two
Love these interviews 🔥
Ron, Nicky 💪💪🙏
RIP Stevie Hyper D🐐
Nicky is one of a kind allways so happy we was at atomics Maidstone
The night stevie hyper D passed away
Glad we got to experience the best mc of all time ❤ big up Dj ron another great podcast
Can't get enough of Nickys laugh... 🤣 Great show guys!
Glad you enjoyed it Rachel and his laugh is infectious isn’t it 🤣😆😂
when Ron mentions about how Nicky used to sell us tunes that would be shit when we got em home - I used to go there 5 days a week and I remember to this day I walked in and who ever it was on the decks was scratching HEAR THE DRUMMER GET WICKED - CHAD JACKSON - I had to have that tune just because of that scratch - to this day its one that sticks in my mind every time I hear it :)
bought so many records off this guy. top lad.
Lovely interview Nicky is so humble and down to earth. I never was a DJ although i did a couple of house gigs; but when i went to Blackmarket, if Nicky was there he would tell me," I don't think we have anything for you, or have a listen to this. I would often buy tunes cos he had the time for me (and everyone else) I was just a face but he knew what I was into.
Not gonna lie these podcasts have been insightful big up yourself Ron 💯💯👊🏾 and RIP SKIBBA 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thanks for the support. Yes RIP Skibba ✨🙏🏾✨
What an incredibly honest and descent chap, many hours spent record shopping around soho. Interviews are on point every time.
loved this. this whole interview series is so special. Nicky is such a genuine person. always loved when he would come play in Toronto.
also Blackmarket records used to sort out a lot of Toronto DJs with tunes that we would've never gotten with more conventional north american distribution at the time
Big up Ron!!
You can tell Nicky blackmarket, his character is like how he plays, 100% on it.
Legend.
Another legend on the show mate. Alongside yourself :). I have to big up your channel Ron. It is really great.
Thanks a bunch. Really hope you enjoy it and if you're about in the morning Nicky and I will be watching along with you. have great evening or a great whatever the time is where you are.
RIP Skibadee
Big up to DJ Ron the Sassparilla Kid truly an innovator and humble dude met him in Miami years ago 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the kind words and support bro. Miami…wow I miss it 💯
Yo Ron pullin up Nicky on false advertising!!!! Gwaan Nicky!
43:20 this culture was one of the mainstay memories of my youth.
I was buying all my hardcore records from mainly two shops, Music Power on Green Lanes, and Blackmarket.
Absolutely spent my days there, digging the crates for what I'd heard on radio and wanted, and then just hanging out listening to the owners/DJ playing the new stuff just coming in that day and everyone in the shop would be reaching their arms out saying they want a copy of that 😄
In Blackmarket I used to walk past the House music section, grab my set of flyers out back, then downstairs to listen and buy the new Jungle
Good Times
Blackmarket on a Saturday was staple. Had to be done.
Loved this one Ron.
I know that he wasn’t, strictly speaking, predominantly Jungle scene but Maurice (MC MC) would be a great guest. Was definitely part of the beginnings…all his bookings seemed to go up North while the Jungle movement was gaining weight. Know he’s stateside these days but…
This guy is the nicest guy in the business hands down. Always got time for everybody, yet he is the hardest working and busy guy but so humble. He is to jungle what Kante is to football and more! Legend! Thankyou Nicky.
Yes yes 👍
Glad I have just found this series of podcasts to catch up on.
Nicky Blackmarket is absolutely a cornerstone in the scene.
And one of the earliest DJs which stood out to me from about 1990 or 1991 when I used to listen to his sets off Pulse FM recorded on tape and played back on my Walkman doing my paper round. Then visiting the shop to buy most of my jungle records back in 90s.
Appreciate the music, from both Nicky and Ron, and all the original junglists.
And thanks for the podcast 👍
Pulse FM 90.6., chilling FM, eruption, centreforce radio, sunrise, music power records, lots of D90 TDK tapes and lots of RF cable hanging out my window to get a good signal. Awesome memories. Respect to you.
I did the same thing in St.louis back in the day with deep grooves records loving this interview
Went to the shop 93-95 Nicky was always welcoming as was Ray & ash attack, great blokes, miss them days
Love this interview, what a nice chap, even though I bought a few dodgy tunes in Blackmarket thinking they were something else in the shop 😁 Sorry to hear about your mum, I lost my mum the same way, and not a day goes by where I don't miss her dearly x
I remember coming across a tape called Nicky Blackmarket and some guy called Stevie Hyper D from 1995 at an event called Roast. It completely blew my mind rinsed out the tape so much had to repair it at least 5 times
Ron wells Jack smooth be a good interview don of the jungle techno , him and top buzz made some blazers !!!
Excited!
Ron another great show. Big up
Thank you.
When Nicky started talking about Stevie I started crying
Great Interview. Nicky such a humble and nice dude. What a career he's had. Jungle & D&B certainly would have been a different entity without him.
Respect to DJ Ron and all the legends. Early to mid 90s Jungle changed a brothers life. RIP to the Original Kool FM 94.5.
Shout out Nicky Blackmarket Kartoonz for that Ray Keith joint Dreamz Of The Future. 💣
Subscribed. 🔥✊🏽🇺🇸
Another good convo! Looking forward to seeing your "untold story of Jungle".... There's a lot of mis information out there.
Just finished watching this and the first thing popping up next is that Skibadee’s passed away. Strange seeings as the conversation covered Stevie Hyper. I was just listening to an Andy C set I hadn’t heard the other night with those two and Det on it, thinking how tight Skibadee’s vocals are. I actually hadn’t heard a set with with Skiba & Hyper D together ever either.
There wasnt many! But a few are about! ruclips.net/video/lMok7oeYUK4/видео.html
Nicky Nicky Nicky Blackmarket! Still have a tape from 1993! Cornerstone of the scene is 100% correct. Spent many an afternoon bunking of school down in the basement listening to Nicky rinse out!
Another magic interveiw, with the legend nicky blackmarket. Keep it up.
Another great interview, thank you Ron and Nicky.🏆👊🏻🙏
These chats are bringing up soo much emotion right now.wow😢😂
❤ what a bloody lovely bloke❤
Humble in the Jungle😂
I love the way he embraces the digital decks ect.
Ron..whose idea were these podcasts??
Hey sometimes episodes even have me having to check myself as my emotions take over. I love it though ❤️. Also funny enough it was my former radio producer who suggested the idea to me and I embellished it with it being a filmed production so our audience could have the visual experience as well as audio.
@LondonSomething1994 The emotion is great and so is that idea..I hope more n more stories n truth come out ..The time is now I reckon😍
Back in the day i was on a bus with some mates and overheard two girls who were going to see Nicky Blackmarket in Long Eaton Nottinghamshire, to cut a long story short, I ended up going on my own best night I've ever had, Nicky played a wicked set and I think Darren Jay was there too 🏅
What a gentleman he is ! Great interview
Big up Nicky mate long long time wicked London something for getting Nicky on here
he is big big part of my life when it comes to drum and bass from my days
at practically living in Black market records him Clarke ray Keith ash attack Sophie
definitely one of the nicest person in d nb you could ever meet not talking now
im talking 30 years so really really nice to hear you Nicky miss you shop rest of crew to
oh do i miss them days mate.. you still look the same bro and laugh the same to
Still got a couple of Nicky’s ‘on the go techno’ mixtapes that I bought in Black Market back in 1991.
Blinding hardcore sets with that bloody mental Nicky Blackmarket sample 😂
Such an insightful interview with Nicky on the origins of the early hardcore/jungle scene. Big up Ron for bringing these, please keep these legendary interviews coming 👍🏻
Another top interview Ron. Loved the bit about how he could flog a tune and make you think it was the nuts. To then go home and it be a load of turd! Would love to see you have Moose on or Shy Fx in the future. Big up
first time I was in the Blackmarket Record shop was in 2002 and I was asking him for oldskool hardcore records :D As he said the last 20 years went by quickly...
Just top notch quality entertainment. I've had different fave dj's at points but if you take the whole period of say94 to present day Nicky Has to be my favourite. His ability to play modern upfront, classic jungle and all in between sets makes him for me the best all rounder DJ in the scene. If I could book a personal set for my own party id get him and Fearless down , or him and Flinty and Demon and its job done. Hope we have many more years to come from Blackmarket. Thanks again to Ron -
Buying records would give me that sense of community black market was a amazing experience.much respect to Ron and Nicky 🤘
Very true Tim, it was a great community space.
I live in Cornwall which is miles away from London but I felt I had to make it there circa 92/93. I used to get copies of the Nicky Blackmarket mix tapes in the early 90s which were the best. Psychotropic 'only for the headstrong'....that era, great tapes which helped for m my musical taste.
great interview.. and insightful.
I LIKE HOW THEY HUG AT THE END LIFE IS SHORT R.I.P MC SKIKBADEE
Big up Ron. Love these interviews.
Rip skibadee 🙏😢
Absolutely gutted rip🙏
