Corny talks territories. And I am here for it. 🍿
Agreed
No one is better than Cornette when talking about the good old days. His memory and attention to detail is inspiring.
Cornette is really the best wrestling historian going today...
@@troylowe814I wonder if he's one of those guys where you can ask him where were you on Aug 2 1987 and he'd actually know...just a pinpoint encyclopedia memory
My notification for this vid stopped at "Jim Cornette on Local Medi..." and my first thought was "medical facility, pal!"
In St.Louis Sam Muchnick was so respected the daily papers always reported the wrestling results the next morning, and when the NWA title changed hands in KC (Dusty to Flair) the NBC affiliate ran a breaking news crawler on the bottom of the screen. The station, KSDK, just happend to be the first station to ever broadcast a wrestling world title match on an experimental broadcast in the 40's.
Sam's promotional style probably helped too, he was even more sports based than Verne Gagne's style was.
But not the same muchnick from cornettes RAW promos, right? 🤣
@@SWAYZEKOBAIN No, that was Phil. Completely unrelated.
@@maxxdahl6062 thanks i knew he was different but i did forget his first name, lmao, for the life of me i couldnt think of his first name. 😂😅
@@SWAYZEKOBAIN PHIL MUSHNICK not SAM MUCHNICK
I love when Jim drops history!
Me too!
Harold Johnson is the WSOC TV sports anchor who rode with Flair in the helicopter.
When Cornette mentioned L.A. news wrestling coverage, it reminded me of WWE’s first show at Staples Center in Nov. 1999. It was the RAW featuring Stephanie and Test’s wedding. The 4PM KNBC sports report ended with clips of the almost wedding and the HHH Vegas wedding reveal. While the anchor, Fred Roggin, talked over the clips, the other anchors were hysterically laughing.
Just over a year later, Roggin would be the sideline reporter for the nationally televised XFL on NBC games.
The same guy that used to do the “Roggin’s Heroes” sports blooper spots?
@@patrickdaly5068 Yup. He’s the founder of the Hall of Shame.
During the Backlund era Warner Wolf would cover the matches from Madison Square Garden on the TV. If memory serves me right, he had some fun with it without being too disrespectful.
My Opinion: By this point in the game everybody already know what it is.. people need to lighten the f___ up and enjoy things... I bet that Reporter was probably happy to be there and talk to the wrestlers without being a disrespectful prick.. I like that..
Having been raised in Cincy, I attended many events in Cincy. Crockett was always at the Cincinnati Gardens and WWF was always at Riverfront Coliseum (sorry if this was already covered in a prior comment)
There was a Tiger Jeet Singh interview where the woman pointed out someone cowereing when the punch clearly missed. He said "Let. Ask you something. Have you ever been in a street fight? I have.". She coldly says "No..." And he just shuts her down with "Okay then. There we go."
Go up to 1980s David Schultz and "pressure" him into "admitting" that wrestling is "fake" and see how that works out for ya, lol.
I hate when people try to be smart asses.. You don't have to like Pro Wrestling and that's okay but respect the people that's in it.. We all know what it is at this point but the disrespectful stuff is stupid..
Christine Jarrett sounds like she was an amazing woman.
We have a sports guy in Chicago (WGN Ch9) who is a wrestling fan. He has some of guys on when they're here.
AEW's ALWAYS there!
Nat Mason I have start watch WGN Channel 9, I also live in Chicago
@@bradpaton3927 I watch AEW, it's lot better than WWE, I like NWA, and MLW.
@@jamesrichardson3322
It's Pat Tomasulo the morning guy.
@@bradpaton3927
He has WWE's people on too. They are in town quite often as well. 🤷🏽♂️😂
I wonder if Brian FINALLY watched “The Ghost & Mr. Chicken” last night (July 16, 2022) on Svengoolie so we can once and for all hear his take on this comedy classic.
Let me clarify....
If so...Atta boy, Brian.
Which clip did they talk about that in? I need to hear it!
@@patrickdaly5068 ruclips.net/video/fz28PgJgNJw/видео.html
@@patrickdaly5068 It was at least twice Jim has talked about it. I'll try to jog my memory on which clip.
Ricky Gibson was a terrific wrestler in his day. He and his brother Robert were a great tag team.
John Stossel found out how fake wrestling is
"I've got the tape from the TV station... I've got the 3/4 inch tape"
at this point, I'd be more surprised if Jim didn't have it lol
Warner Wolf in NYC did interviews with Andre, and showed clips on the monthly MSG shows. When Piper and Hogan met in February 1985, WNBC interviewed Piper at 5 pm News before the match
In my over 30 year tv news career, some of my favorite stories have been on/with/about pro wrestling. In Salisbury MD, Richmond VA and Greensboro NC...we always loved some pro wrestling in our newscasts.
That was Harold Johnson who rode with Flair.
Early '80's Cincinnati was probably Georgia Championship Wrestling. I lived near Dayton at that time. We were all about GCW. WWF was an afterthought...
My favorite interview moment was still Bill Maher calling wrestling fake, so Piper showed him his ass on ABC, while one of the girls told him to put it away.
Harold Johnson was the sports guy at ch9 I'm Charlotte
KING 5 in Seattle had Tony Ventella’s wrestling hold of the week.
Hey, Jim. Thanks for answering my question (and on my birthday, no less). Maybe "pressure you" wasn't the right term to use. I should have said, "Did you ever have to deal with any obnoxious TV reporters who looked down on pro wrestling?" P.S. The Cincinnati Gardens matches of the early 1980s were most likely NWA matches. I remember seeing Tommy "Wildfire" Rich on one of the wrestling reports.
The Philadelphia Bulletin used to run a blurb on Mondays after Saturday shows at the old Philadelphia Arena this was back in the 70s when Bruno was the WWWF champion
Hundreds of years ago when I was a teenager, Huntsville, AL was blessed with a marvelous columnist, a fellow named Bill Easterling. Bill once told a story about how in his early journalism days (mid-to-late-60s, I think), he was sitting in the office of the Huntsville Times on a Friday afternoon, an hour or two before the publishing deadline, and Nick Gulas walked in and handed him the results of Saturday's card at the Madison County Coliseum, to be printed in the Sunday morning paper. Bill looked at the sheet Nick had handed him and asked Nick how he could be bringing him results of matches that hadn't happened yet. Nick just looked at him funny, cracked up laughing, and walked out.
In the 80s because kayfabe was so protected they were treated like a sport
Until they asked vince to pay a sporting license and he killed the business by inventing sports entertainment
It's kinda ironic , having the picture of Ricky Gibson on this topic, back in the early 80s a local sports reporter Ron Golnick , had a piece saying Ricly Gibson threw "Blood" on his shirt , he said he had it analyzed and said it was not human blood , blah blah , but the same sports reporter ended up being the local "indie show/outlaw show" promoter, it was funny that he was a big mark for the local wrestlers
I remember Big Jack Eaton on the news. I didn’t know he was affiliated. Lance Russell and Dave Brown were my favorite.
I remember in my territory they had a big battle royale with the winner getting a lincoln town car, a few days before the show they said on the air (radio) that Rick Martel had just bought the said car at a local ford dealership, he of course won it anyway and they did the heel(michaels hayes) breaking the windshield angleto set up for a match for the next card
In Alexandria, radio station KRRV had this Ford car painted up THE NEWS TEAM and amber security lights driving around the Coliseum filming the crowd going in for their TV affiliate and sometimes interviewing wrestlers and fans.
Good for Christine Jarrett! I remember in the Washington D.C. area on channel 4 I believe Michael was his name he would put wrestling highlights in his sportscasts I felt for a cheap pop and ratings of course
George Michael and The Sports Machine
I was watching WCCW in the eighties when David died and before. I used to check the Dallas Morning News sports section for the outcomes of Friday matches at the Sportatorium. They started having more respect for wrestling being a sport.
I just love the history hearing from Cornette and reading the comments.
In Memphis the 10pm News always gave the results of the Monday night card..I hated when the main event went long lol
I like travis antenna tv complete with that plain 70’s-80’s Vintage Yellow Graphic
Great detail and fond memories!!!
What a Great Way to explain how important LOCAL TV AND RADIO IS 🤠
Keep the product respectable, maybe use a local guy in a prominent position, and you can still have some local business co promotion.
Pretty sure the sports guy at WSOC was Harold Johnson.
Here in the DFW area the teenage girls were gaga for the Von Ehrich brothers in the early '80s. Pop radio and country stations had alot to do with that. Sometimes at the shows it sounded like a Beatles concert!
Imagine if they did AEW Style Media Scrums Back in the Territories and how Jim Cornette would have Lost the Plot …
He would've lost his tennis racquet in the promoter's head, more like!
5:45 Hes talking about Harold Johnson the sportscaster on channel 9, I got to talked to him one of the nights I bowled 300 in 1996 because the center called the station to report it and they did actually did a piece on it that evening, I was a TA at uncc at the time, was pretty cool.
Corny should do a classic wrestling (not sports entertainment) watchalong. Maybe like Lou Thesz vs Gagne or something?
London Kentucky loves ya
I wonder if the Bob Mooney Jim talks about is related to the well-known Bill Moody AKA Paul Bearer AKA Percy Pringle the Third
"We got to big for our own good" - Jim Cornette
Too
Buddy Nichols was the head of sports programming in Alexandria, Louisiana for KALB tv
I miss these
Never ask Dave Shultz is wrestling fake
Nobody did
@@chrischar9428 I can't tell if this is an A+ burn on John Stossel (calling him a nobody) or just you didn't know, but yeah, Stossel infamously got his dumbass slapped silly for not just asking him, but when Schultz basically dared him to repeat it he just flat out said it to him.
@@inarar5334 its on people that don't know what was said
It's always baffling when Jim talks about these guys who were allegedly heartthrobs for the young girls. The Rock and Roll Express, for example, are hideous and look 50 years old when they're 25, but Jim describes them like One Direction.
Different times and standards.....also the south.
I thought this was going to be about the northwest terrritories
interesting that at 9:20 Jim insinuates that the Sheik killed Ohio as a territory. Over the pandemic I did some research on Columbus as a wrestling town and it does seem like something happened in the mid 60s that killed the city dead until 1977 when cable came out and Crockett started running the area again.
The Sheik killed off the whole Big Time territory not just Ohio. Search Big Time Memories on You Tube. It's a wealth of information!!!!
GCW as Booked by Ole Anderson ran Shows in Columbus, Georgia and Columbus, Ohio years before JCP.🤔🎤🐴💎👔👞👞🤼♂️B.W.
Just listened to all of Jim's RAW shoots... And goddamnit... Cornette & ________ 2024 for POTUS???
Warner Wolf at wcbs in New York treated it as a legitimate sport
It would have been something if the babies started turning up themselves to watch!
Seems like it boils down to location and demographics in the south and the mid west they took it serious the West coast and East Coast not really at all except in Spanish language media in both places
I known WWWF/WWF ran shows in Cincinnati but I didn't know and I'm a kinda surprised that Crockett Promotions ran shows in Cincinnati as well.. Damn.. Great piece of history there.. Jim Cornette is a Pro wrestling historian for real..
Edited: Most News Reporters from the South respected Pro Wrestling cause they were fans, If they didn't know if it was kayfabe or not is up to debate but yeah whenever a known Pro Wrestling Event take place in a city more than likely the News will pick it up.. Yeah New York and Los Angeles reporters would take shots at Pro Wrestling and that's when you send the heels and let them do the damage.. Now we have legit fighters in Pro Wrestling so it's far from fake and yes it's predetermined but it's far from fake cause people can still get hurt if anything goes wrong..
I grew up in Louisiana from 1 to 13. Pro Wrestling and I have met. Lol
Jimi. Hendrix how cool is that
Ice cream headache
Tomorrow's National Ice Cream Day, apparently....
@@bradpaton3927 Rad. I will keep that in mind
Ricky Gibson. Is that the love child of Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson?
Robert's older brother
You should really research Ricky Gibson, WHAT A GREAT TALENT. He won a ton of territorial championships
Wildkat sports is the best promotion in the south
Cornette obviously misses the old kayfabe days. But imagine he never got into the business and remained just a fan.
How would he have felt when he realised that wrestling was predetermined? I can't imagine he would have been pleased. It's not so cool when you're not in on the secret.
Huh?
Cornette would have known long before he got into the business. After the age of 10, if you think wrestling is real, you would have to be pretty stupid.
@@ithinkaboutthings9052 I think the guys inside the old wrestling industry underestimated how many people knew, but were happy to suspend disbelief for a couple of hours a week.
I was an early 90s WWF fan(from the UK) and in my house, it was always acknowledged that wrestling was entertainment. We loved the o.t.t ridiculousness of the WWF, Especially compared to British wrestling, which got was stuck in the 70s and got taken off its regular tv slot on 86 and removed completely in 88.
If I found out MMA was scripted and predetermined after all the money I spent on ppv, all the time I’ve invested into it. I do my part and support anybody trying to expose that business.
And I could be wrong here cause theres an audio clip of him finding out at 9 years old that it was booked
Ultimate kayfabe tv
