This game brings back memories. I played this and Gran Turismo 2 at the time, and wondered why the cars would control as they would. I guess I didn't know how arcade racing games worked, haha.

The drifting mechanic was great, when you got the hang of it!

@2:10:18 Feet Per Second was a thing long before Frames Per Second.

I'm a little miffed that I missed this stream. Ridge Racer 1 was right in my wheelhouse. I loved it and the music and mastered every mode and car. Revolution was good, but I never got great at it as the physics slightly changed. I did get a NegGcon at an import store, but never got used to it. I kinda hated it because it seemed way less responsive to me than tapping the d-pad.
Rage Racer was a bit of a letdown and I kind of fell off of the series at that point and never actually played R4 and moved on to Gran Turismo.
Flash forward a few decades and discovered Rave Racer on MAME. Playing with an actual steering wheel with the force feedback plugin enabled was a game changer. The Rave Racer soundtrack is even better than RR and RR2, and that's saying a lot. I keep all 3 on my phone with a VGM player app and listen to them all the time.
So for me, I do love the arcade fun of RR, RR2, and Rave Racer, and also had a blast with RR7 because the driving physics just kind of click with me. Rage, and RR4 & 5, not so much.
If you have a force feedback wheel and a decent PC, do yourself a favor and grab MAME, the FFB plugin, and all those great racing games from the 90's like Daytona, RR2, Rave, Cruisin', SF Rush, etc.. They're AMAZING with a G27 and the shifter.

I feel like in the nes snes era we wanted better graphics but we didn't know about better picture. In the ganecube xbox era, I definitely got the component cables

That's accurate to my experience, it wasn't until the ps2 era that I started the journey of figuring out superior/inferior cables, displays etc.

@1:53:40 Sounds like you guys need to do a video on how this frankenstein PS3 thing works. I've got a literal pile of dead PS3s that I can let you test it on so long as I get at least one working backward compatible PS3 back when you're done with them.
