Lol, I love Conan. He's so good at self-deprecating humor, it's been his brand for decades. I'm sure he was 100% aware that he was annoying those elderly ladies, and they may have been in on the joke as well.

There's significant inbreeding in the human race in general. But especially among small ethnic groups like the old Irish clans. I'm not exempt. My mother's, father's, and several cousin's family names are all indigenous to within less than a 100 miles of where I was born and raised. But so what. According to Scientific American, third cousins produce the healthiest offspring. Bottom line, it would be impossible for humanity to reproduce endlessly without some level of inbreeding.

Actually, I'm hearing 'Paddy' when Conan repeated your man's name. Conan is from Boston, where about half the population will joyfully expound on Paddy v. Patty whenever someone gets it wrong, so I think he's aware of it.
I don't know how much research you've done into Mr. O'Brien, but it's worth knowing that before he got into the chat-host gig, he was a writer for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. He's developed this awkward, almost-creepy fool persona, but he knows his funny.

Throw in the fact that everyone from the UK and Ireland say Americans say their Ts like Ds. Yet somehow according to Irish people every American says informal version of Patrick wrong makes me think they hear a American accent and just assume we're saying it wrong without actually listening.

I am a huge fan of your channel. Conan is my favorite human being and one of the smartest minds to ever live. He graduated from Harvard University. He’s incredible for many reasons, but one of the main ones is because he knows that he is an awkward and lanky man and he 100% leans into that. He makes fun of himself so often and loves when people laugh, even if it’s at him.
The thing is, he KNOWS that what he’s a lot more about the stuff he acts like he doesn’t. He purposely looks stupid in order to look absurd.
If you listen to some of his talks he’s given at various places (schools, academic conventions, etc) and his podcast, you can really tell just how much of a mastermind he is. He’s such a cool and wholesome man.

Conan's always been good at doing these "remotes" when he just goes out and is improvising. Towards the end there, and by end I mean last year when he finally stopped doing his late night show after it's few incarnations that lasted 28 years, he actually started doing a show called "Conan Without Borders" where they'd be special episodes of him visiting different countries, and it sounds like they would show it to a local audience of people from that culture. The last handful of years, some of his best stuff would just be bits he did in their office amongst his staff. Bits with his assistant Sona are great. Maybe my favorite though was the long running Jordan Schlansky series.
I think that started during the writers strike in 2008, when they were just looking for stuff to do without their writers. Jordan was an associate producer on the show, I think since the 90s, but the running bit, which I don't even think is a joke, is that legitimately no one seems to really know what it is that Jordan actually does on the show. Whenever Conan legitimately asks, he can never get a straight answer that explains it. He's an odd guy, and I'm guessing that he must be on the autism spectrum. He's very in to certain things, which in themselves are things I'm generally in to also, but he's very pretentious about it. The main one is that he loves Italy, and though he's a Polish Jew from Buffalo, New York, he basically acts as if he is Italian, and is very condescending about Americans, which he 100% is. On one of the travel shows, they actually went to Italy together! He's very informative about these things, and will monotonously drone on about them in an emotionless way that's very robotic, that's always a stark contrast to Conan's wacky sense of humor, and there's a strong tension of love and hate between them that's hilarious. You just have to see it for yourself to understand what I mean.
Oh! And WikiBear! I love WikiBear! This was a bit for a couple weeks a few years back when there was news about a new toy that was a stuffed bear that could connect to the internet and answer children's questions. So, they had their own WikiBear that they would test out by asking it innocent questions, and somehow the bear would always end up shifting the conversation to dark topics that were inappropriate for children. It's right up your alley!

I can sympathize with people who ask those broad questions about their ancestors. In 1980, my Canadian grandmother passed away while my eldest sister was visiting our Irish grandfather's home town of Graiguenamanagh-Tinnahinch. I placed a call to try and get in touch with my sister, and the lady who was the local operator at the time had to send someone out to the old family farm to fetch her back to town.
While I was waiting on the line, the operator asked me a bunch of questions and finally determined that of course she knew who I was, and didn't she know my great-uncle who I am named for, and wasn't he a fine man to do what he did for my grandfather and on and on.
I'm afraid there are too many generations separating most folks ancestors and most people alive in Ireland today.

I gave up on tracing my Irish roots when I got back to my great-great-grandfather and -grandmother. They are the ones that emigrated to Canada directly from Ireland. I have a fairly common Irish surname, and these two's first names were Patrick and Mary. I decided there would be a couple with those names in half the parishes on the Emerald Isle during the right time period, so it would be impossible to figure out who they were before they took the trip. By the way, their son moved to the US, so we weren't Canadian for long.
Luckily, my brother had more persistence, and has managed to trace things a good ways back past where I threw in the towel.

I visited O’Brien’s Tower the same year he did, but the weather was MUCH nicer for my visit. So calm, we could easily hear the waves far below, and the calls of one upset cow rapidly walking along the edge of the next cliff to the south, trying to catch up to its companions. I remember watching that segment of his video when it originally aired, and laughing at him trying to deal with those gale-force winds.
And yes, people were SO welcoming, gracious, helpful and generous. Especially in the small towns, in which we spent a lot more time than in any cities. We agreed that if we hadn’t just bought a house, we might have tried to relocate there, at least for half (the warmer half) of the year. Sadly, my wife passed away before we were able to return even for a second visit.

That paint in the pubs you referred to is high gloss/high test and probably isn’t cheap. It’s designed for durability; that’s why it’s so commonly used.

Someone asked my friend Vinny one time "Hey, do you know Joe?!", his response was "... I'm Italian and this is New Jersey, you are going to have to be more specific!" LOL Thought of that when Conan asked the man if he knew anyone named "O'Brien'.

I am not of Irish decent. I am, however, Welsh. I would like to visit Wales someday to find my roots there. And I would also like to visit Ireland as well when I do decide to visit that neck of the woods.

This American with Irish ancestry (it's way too long ago for me to claim to be 'Irish-American') has been over many times, researching my ancestors. Dillon, O'Flynn, McDowell (Ulster), and FitzGeralds. I know some are Anglo-Irish, but I still honor them.

Patty is probably just the easier way to pronounce the word because of the way the accents are formed. The way the vowels are in certain dialects shifts the way the consonants sounds for example

I wonder if the musical aspect is why so many different genres were birthed in the American south. Certain areas, especially Appalachia, have a rich musical history that other regions were inspired by & adapted.

Dylan Moran says that when an American asks him whether he knew his grandmother he tells him that all of the men in town knew her very well.
