The fact that Ricky also has a bit where he mentions what he calls his "eating years" where he felt sick after eating 11 sausages and how he worked out a lot just to enjoy wine and cheese tells us that he's not just observing it, but has lived through it too. And since my weight has gone through huge fluctuations as well, it just makes it funnier for me.

The problem is when ppl with depression eat up their emotions. It is not something you should do, but it is better than not eating and for example sleeping at all. I lost 20 kg in one month and I know that now when I get depressed and eat excessively I at least do not get more depressed just because my brain has not enough nutrients. I try to change that as well, but it is hard

John Pinnet was a large fellow and funny. He made jokes about his size. Even after he lost some weight, he still made jokes about it. Sadly he has passed. Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias is also a large guy. He has made jokes about his weigh and his love for food. Yes he has also lost weight but continues to make jokes about his size and food as well as his zany antics. He incorporates element of his life into bis comedy and the best comedy is relatable comedy. I the content in to esoteric or leaning toward one viewpoint only, it ceases to have that universally relatable quality to make a wide, diverse audience laugh. Just look at the truly successful comedians out there. The ones that create relatable humor continue and the ones that don't are only funny to their niche market and that's it.

6:30 Agreed!!! I've always been a pretty fit person. I've always lifted weights, done cardio, gotten outdoors, etc... However, the last three years, I've been struggling with a health issue that's prevented me from doing most of that, and for the first time I have a gut. For all of my trips to my doctor, not once has he tried to encourage me to be doing a little more to stop the weight gain, even though he knows three years ago I had a six pack. He's afraid to mention it because of our current culture. It's very unfair to medical professionals to make them walk on egg shells like that around people and make them afraid to point out weight gain, when it's their job to keep their patients healthy. 🙂

I'm about 173 cm, and at one point I weighed almost 18 stone. Sure, there seems to be a genetic component, but, I'll admit that what I ate played a huge part.
When folks asked, "How are you doing?" I'd respond, "I'm fat." No excuses, just the truth. 😁
Being a guy, I really wasn't concerned about it until I had a stroke and was diagnosed with diabetes. And, even now, weight can fluctuate. Still tend to put on "winter weight" due to lower exercise then, for example.
What can I do about it? To lose weight, I'd have to eat a dangerously low amount of calories, according to the "nutrition experts." (And the diabetes "health professionals" are generally promoting harmful diets for a diabetic...) So, I try to eat as sensibly as I can, and try to avoid eating beyond starting to feel full.
Those who felt challenged or offended by Ricky Gervaise need to realise a rule of comedy: they deal in generalities and the ridiculous. Don't take everything to heart. 😉

Ricky Gervais is a comedian, and he has the attitude that if you are easily offended by jokes, stay home or leave. Going to a comedy show is not for the light hearted. Comedians are going to offend someone. Because someone goes there to be offended and to complain. Well, they got what they wanted. His new Netflix special Super Nature, is hysterical and very offensive to a specific group and life style. He makes no bones about it either. but, you have a choice, Netflix has a lot of other shows you can watch, like Dave Chappelle and the Closer. Sorry not that one, that one was considered offensive to the same group of people, Surprisingly, Netflix has come out in support of both comedians for their shows and will not cancel them. Netflix told their employees, a very small minority by the way, that if they do not like the content of the shows being posted on Netflix, they can leave if they like. But if you stay you will work diligently and professionally on the production of those shows.

My personal opinion is that 95% of fat people are fat because they are lazy. I have an obese mother and I, myself wake up every morning and workout on top of keeping track of my calorie intake everyday to stay in shape. I don't enjoy it, but I do it to stay in the shape I want to be in. My mother complains about her weight, but won't commit to taking care of herself, to stay in weight. She doesn't want to eat right or workout and I see this from a lot from others I know that are overweight. They would rather try to guilt everyone else into accepting them as they are, than to actually put forth the effort to change what they don't like about themselves. I believe that, if you want to feel better about yourself, it's up to you to make the change, not society

Religion has only started being an "offensive" subject in this century for the most part, and even then, mostly just in crazy woke, PC circles. Wasn´t long ago when Hitchens and the rest whooped those crazies(religious) all over the place. But now thanx to overfeminization of our society, "be nice, conform, obey" has become the prevailing mantra of the so called culture. As if the world was one big kindergarten.

But if you fat, you fat. The word is an adjective that has a precise meaning, used to qualify something. Now the way one perceives it might be negative but it's an objectively neutral word. Just like saying you are thin, tall, short, small, pretty, ugly, funny, grumpy... People putting waaaay too much thought into this. It's either you feel good the way you are and then what do you care if people call you fat? Or you don't feel good about yourself and need people to take your perception of the word into account and so YOU need to come to term with your situation and that's that.
Now we are obviously not talking about diseases here, just normal fat people

I'm not under some false notion that my fatness is a result of anything other than bad life choices and Ricky's comedy just points that out and it's hilarious.
Frankly, all this PC tip-toeing that people do does not help me do better about my health. Obviously people shouldn't be rude and tell you you're fat unless you bring it up. But, for example, I always say it about myself and my family is always "you're not fat". Like how does that help me?

Funnier than I thought it'd be. Good delivery. He mentioned at the beginning that he used to be fat, and I think his material stemmed from his mentality that he had when losing weight, as if being hard on himself may have been what motivated him, and now he feels comfortable making fun of the topic. You know what I mean?
I mean, he made a lot of generalizations like not mentioning any other factors like age, metabolism, sugar, medicine, lifestyle, economics, etc. He talks as if everybody can put in the same effort and eat the same things and get the same results, or even have the time. That's not true. For example, I have always had a fast metabolism and pretty terrible diet while staying the same weight. Also the food available to Americans is much less healthy due to the whole industry itself.
I'll also add that there seems to be extremes of fat and skinny, as if society is compensating by glorifying being skinny, or that skinniness is inherently more attractive. I don't see any issue with having fat until it becomes too unhealthy. And in my opinion, it may actually be mentally healthier for some people to have a particular diet as long as it's not gluttonous. The opposite extreme of being too health conscious and appearance obsessed is certainly not mentally healthy.

I rather think making jokes that are offensive to many and funny to some is fairly lazy. You will never make everyone happy, but that shouldn't mean you don't bother to try to be a bit nicer, better, at all.

Those things will NEVER happen for me. It isn't my fault and I don't feel bad about it. Fat people on the other hand, if their weight is within their control (as it most often is) their excuses don't hold up. If they continue to eat unhealthily and refuse to improve their physical activity they'll remain fat.

Personally I don’t think the words fat or obese are offensive, if someone does then it’s probably because they themselves are fat or obese. So even if you were to invent new terms to describe these conditions eventually we’d come to the same point were fat or obese people would be offended by them, then we’re just back to square one so what’s the point in changing them.

Ricky, despite saying “I’m not having a go”, can’t help letting real meanness slip into his routines. There’s so much wrong with this one, not the least of which is the economic cost of healthy eating, the genetic role that plays into metabolic rates and disabilities, and the possibility that obesity is a famine survival response. Just so much we don’t understand which makes fat shaming just another form of verbal abuse. Oh, let’s not even touch how the corporate urge for profits at all costs includes are mortality and waistlines. Why is corn syrup used as a sweetener again?

Personally, I don't find it particularly offensive to call someone "fat" - it's just a physical descriptor, as are "thin", "tall", "cut", "red-haired", or "black". I find dancing around the terms to be fairly offensive, honestly. Someone with red hair knows that his hair is red, as does someone who is overweight, especially morbidly so, knows it. It's pretty insulting to presume that that person is either ignorant or emotionally fragile.
