4:12 I know the intention is to hear it in its entirety, but God, Maynard's voice here is in total singularity with the track, it's a shame it doesn't last longer, it should last longer :(
In my opinion most of his best lyrics are in A Perfect Circle songs, but yes he does offer some very insightful words in his Tool work. He is a master wordsmith
10,000 Days is incredible. The groove on this track is insane. I’ve seen people say “oh the pot is just the radio song.” Who cares if it was a little more radio ready, this stuff rocks all the way to the bank. And in 2006-2007 Vicarious, The Pot, and Jambi were the best things on the radio at the time and I’ll never not think that. And yes I have a personal connection to this album but I really do believe it to be one of their very best.
You look young. These guys popped up in the early/mid90s. I was a sophomore in college and recall someone spinning OPIATE -- before the song "Sober" came out and helped the band become popular. OPIATE is still my favorite of all of their albums and really captures their energy. They definitely evolved and their music became more complex and to me, they are arguably one of the most overall talented bands of all time. The guitar and bass (or vocals) don't get as much credit as deserved because Danny Carey is a fucking ROBOT. The best part? MJK was a stand-up comedian before rising to popularity as a singer. Check out some of the early episodes of MR SHOW (starring Bob Odenkirk and David Cross). =-)
@@jasonwilliams7454 I'm 50. I just discover Tool a couple of years ago and feel some kind of hangry aganist myself to not have heard about them in the 90's (in France).
I'm 37 and have listened to Tool since kindergarten so not too far off from birth. Lol I love that I am 22 years older than you and yet we've both been raised with this incredible band. 😊 And Maynard isn't slowing down anytime soon so if you consider the length between albums, they might drop one more in my lifetime. 😂
Insane musicality. The way the guitar comes in and erupts in such a way when the verse fully opens up. It's not just the notes, it's a full on understanding of the emotional power/effect sound and the instrument can have.

This may sound dramatic and the members of Tool will most likely never read this but I just want to say that Tool has helped me get through a lot of personal struggles in my life. Their music, the aggression, the tempo changes, the harmonics and lyrics helped save me from my dark shadows through out my later life. To see everyone in the comments in unity sharing their love for this band and expressing raw emotion is why Tool remain in my top 3. Thank you Maynard, Justin, Danny and Adam for everything. May you all continue to be successful, and make more amazing music for newer generations ❤️
You're far from alone. I had a friend who was an absolute disaster after high school. Extreme fall into drugs and hanging with the wrong kind of people. He was always a TOOL fan but, he got into a real deep listening phase, and started reading about MJK and his beliefs and thought process, and credits that connection with a recovery, and return to Christianity. He's a happy, sober person now, with good relationships and a nice wife.
As a metalhead for years now, i never truly understood the Tool hype. I could never really get into it and i lost my focus on it pretty quickly. Today i gave them another shot and put on a Tool playlist, maybe it's because i'm older, but i believe things have changed just now and i finally "get it". This song was awesome!!

The guitar riff that starts around 0:48. That low chug into the long bend that feedbacks is so simple, but it's just such a cool sound. It's crazy how Adam is able to sound so unique with so little.

Thanks, because it's impossible to understand most of what he is singing, not just on this song but in general. Im not trying to flame but to me it just sounds like lots of nasally tones put together into a melody.
Reverend Maynard once said, "use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve". So we went worshipping giant snails, Until copyright showed up. Now we have the creepy purple fractal face, which is nice, But it ain't the giant snails.
Absolutely love that dedication you have to the sound. My daddy; God rest His soul as if 10-15-2015. Getting close and whether he hears it in the flesh or through the grave- I am everso and more than proud to be his one and only daughter.
Tool’s musical genius and flawless performance is easier to digest when you accept the fact that sometime in the early 90’s a spacecraft delivered them to us.
I hear what you saying… true. That could be a different song all into itself. Simply put though, that’s the bridge…or one of them. It seems there’s like two bridges in this song. Anyway, Most good rock songs all have them.
I come back to this song just for those few seconds and that one sentence. It's just such a perfect dialog between all musicians. But what makes Tool so great is that they're not trying to milk it. That leaves it into a hem for everybody to discover.
"Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. Got lemon juice up in your eye." One of my favourite lyrics of all time. Unbelievably powerful and intelligent. It's up there with "Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion." Everything about The Pot is fantastic. The guitar, the drums, percussion, THAT bass, and the incredibly intelligent and profound lyrics that are bitter without coming across as bitter.
@@akeustis "Weeping shades of cozened indigo." Cozen means fake and indigo is a dark purple, the colour of bruises. So Maynard is accusing the person of wearing fake injuries. "Got lemon juice up in your eye." The cause of the weeping. But on the other hand by squeezing lemon juice into your eye you'll hurt yourself. So in a nutshell Maynard is telling the person that in wearing fake injuries to appear to be a victim, they will only inflict pain unto themselves when the truth comes out. But in true Maynard style he doesn't just come out with it, he uses this amazing example of descriptive language to convey the same message in an amazingly intelligent way. It fits in with the whole theme of The Pot. Crying Wolf. Lies. Hypocrisy.
@@philyates7670 This always throws me about this song and it's one of my favorite songs of all time. I get the meaning of the lyrics but I can never hear it in the song. EVERYONE says the lyric is Cozened but It sounds to me like he is saying chosen. The word Cozen is supposed to be pronounced like the word Cousin, am I the only one hearing the long O or did he intentionally pronounce it this way for some reason. It's the only thing that bothers me about this song.
I'm in Africa ,in my hut , living a simple and beautiful life .... I just discovered this .... and I've witnessed another kind of beauty I've never experienced before.

Haha that's awesome! Tool is amazing! Check out Forty Six and Two, hell the whole Aenema album is amazing! Also check out A Perfect Circle. It's a different band but with the same singer and I'm not sure if there's other band members from Tool or not. It is kinda the same sound but a little less "hard".
Everyone's talking about snails, but can we talk about how Maynard is able to sing so high and hold it well while still making it sound grungy and big?
@@bksniperguy I don't think that's accurate either. I play the guitar, and I love playing tool songs. They are very consistent with their tuning for the vast majority of their songs. I don't think the pitch was shifted.
I've been a fan for yrs..but it wasnt until the concerts from this yr .that I realized how insanely talented they are. Each one of the band members are above and beyond. 🤘
This was actually the first TOOL song I had ever listened to. For a long time, the only genre I really listened to was grunge and hard rock (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, etc.) One day this song was randomly suggested to me on Spotify and I gave it a listen. It took me a while but I was able to adjust to this different sound of music I had never known and I fell in love with it. Now I’ve been listening to TOOL for a good year and have also recently discovered A Perfect Circle and let me just saw Maynard is an absolute genius. The composition and lyrics in his pieces are just so astonishing and surreal. Adam and Justin’s bass and guitar just add an amazing touch to the flow of the song while Danny’s drums just help gain a sort of importance to it while Maynard’s vocals emphasize the overall uncanny lyrics and emotions of each song and help to create a band called TOOL. TOOL has meant so much to me and has helped me with my anxiety and depression and I just wish I knew about them sooner.
Check out his third band Pucifer, and if you like a perfect circle im sure you have herd "the nurse who loved me" its a cover of Failure and they are an amazing underrated 90s band.
SAME. Ahh deftones and tool have opened my mind to other bands. I used to only listen to grunge rock as well thinking that’s the only rock I can tolerate. As good as grunge is it’s more like a angsty teenage feel. The real deep rock music has opened my mind on different things throughout my personality and aesthetic and perspective of life😁

I seriously NEVER get tired of this song. It’s perfect in every way. I literally listen to it on repeat when I jog in the mornings.
Same here. I keep thinking sooner or later I'll get tired of it. But sooner or later never comes.
A genuine masterpiece

Insane musicality. The way the guitar comes in and erupts in such a way when the verse fully opens up. It's not just the notes, it's a full on understanding of the emotional power/effect sound and the instrument can have.

Their music, the aggression, the tempo changes, the harmonics and lyrics helped save me from my dark shadows through out my later life.
I think anyone who can't say this isn't paying attention. Great post, thanks.
If anyone expects to feel good or get off the to shallow end of Tool, they are missing the true bliss, horror, and delirium of what it is to be human.

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
Then burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass so
Don't go tossin' your stones around

Foot in mouth and head up ass so
Whatcha talkin' 'bout?
Difficult to dance 'round this one
'Til you pull it out, boy

Got lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle

Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent
Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo
Got lemon juice up in your eye, eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind
Weepin' shades of indigo
Trapped without a reason
Weepin' shades of indigo
Liar, lawyer; mirror, voyeur, what's the difference?

Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo

"Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo. Got lemon juice up in your eye."
One of my favourite lyrics of all time. Unbelievably powerful and intelligent.
It's up there with "Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusion."
Everything about The Pot is fantastic. The guitar, the drums, percussion, THAT bass, and the incredibly intelligent and profound lyrics that are bitter without coming across as bitter.
OK I'll admit, I think I got the gist of the song but this particular line went way over my head. Help?
