Thanks, Father, for great enlightenment. You may need to do a part 2 regarding toll houses and what happens between death and the 40th day - and beyond.
Anyone familiar with the basics of Orthodox theology understands that such a teaching should not be taken literally, but rather symbolically or figuratively. This is especially based on the patristic principle summarized by St. John of Damascus: "After death there is no repentance." Another principle states that "every soul will be judged based on the state it is in at the moment of death." And finally, nowhere in the Christian tradition does it say that demons will judge souls after death, nor angels, but it is God who is "the judge of all the earth." Toll house literalists usually believe these doctrines, but the more detailed toll house visions contradict these teachings if taken literally. Demons do not only accuse in these visions, as many assert, but they pronounce the judgment as well. And sometimes the defending angel will try to convince the demon that the soul has repented. But if the soul had repented, it would not have been accused, therefore it is teaching that either the soul can repent after death, or the angel and demon are play-acting. Clearly such visions, if true, have another meaning besides a literal meaning.
God's will is that you embrace the doctrines of grace....based on the word of God. Find a Reformed church true to the scriptures...... not the accretions and made up traditions that distort the pure gospel of Christ.
You are on the right track if you are entering the Orthodox Church. Pray for further illumination and you will receive it. It takes a while to deprogram ourselves from our former way of thinking.
was dat you not so long back, on da Irish telly news channel running out of a broken Argos window carrying dat 50 inch flat screen tv on ya back.??. yeh, very well done.. and next time can u get me one.??..
Thank you for talking about this, Father. I heard just 2 weeks ago a parishioner that watches your channel say the Orthodox view of the Soul After Death is gnostic.
At around 17 minutes into the video, Fr. relates story about St Anthony the Great's experience learning about the soul after death. Father you did a good job, except for one important point: 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 that says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
I would love to know more. In this video you have addressed the scriptures often used to support "immediacy" and explained how immediacy is not present in them. You also indicated that these scriptures don't negate the concept of the soul's journey. But are there scriptures that directly support the soul's journey? Is the concept purely a product of tradition? I don't mean to be critical here--I ask out of a genuine desire to know more... :)
Jude comes to mind, where it discusses the "dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses". This is an extremely mysterious text outside of Patristic teaching. But within Patristics we know it refers to this assault by the demons at the moment of death. A good resource is Fr. Seraphim Rose's "The soul after death". There's an audiobook version on youtube for free.
Excellent comment. I’m in the same place as you. There was some good content in the video but a few loose ends. Father Josiah could have spoken more about the 40 days (I don’t know any Scriptural basis for that) and the toll houses (again, not from Scripture). If one depends on patristics for “the truth” one ends up all over the place. I often think there is a danger of mythologising the Faith by adding to it doctrines of men. I so nearly became an orthodox Christian but have been put off by a number of (what are to me) unscriptural practices such as the veneration of the Theotokos, relics, etc and the insistence by some that there is no salvation outside the Orthodox Church. Yet I also see the inventions of the Protestant reformation (e.g. the Eucharist as merely symbolic) as equally troubling.
The forty days are biological, so doesn’t have to have a passage in scripture. It’s written in the human body. The grieving family is greatly helped by the forty days as well as the transforming soul. It also takes forty days for the mother and baby to recover from childbirth.(also part of Chinese tradition) Forty days for a simple fracture to join. Forty days of prayer fasting once a year is a very successful spiritual program mostly lost to the West. There are most likely more illiterate people in Heaven than scholars, so Sola Scriptura can’t be true.
@@malindsellThe traditions of the Church as held in the same regard as scripture itself. That’s a big point of contention between Protestants and Orthodox. We view Holy Tradition as every bit as holy as Holy Scripture. After all, who do you think put the scriptures in a uniform canon? The Bible didn’t fall out of the sky. It was put together by the Church through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And it isn’t “traditions of men”. It’s traditions given to us by God through the apostles themselves unto the present day.

Hebrews 9:27 says, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”Hebrews 9:27 says, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”
I need more clarity on the topic you've presented Father. I have recently found your youtube channel and have been edified spiritually. While you did mention verses that are misinterpreted on what happens when we die, you however didn't mention verse that supports the teaching of praying for the dead. Can you assist me with actual scripture from the bible that supports that teaching?
I heard Father Josiah mention that baptism had not been established yet when the thief on the cross died. Was baptism with John the Baptist different than baptism after Pentecost? I’ve had trouble understanding the meaning of baptism and always wondered if the nature of it changed pre and post Pentecost. Anybody know?
After death, do we enter eternity, that is, are we outside time? So, yes, there is a process toward/into Christ, but perhaps not in the linear timeline way we understand?
Agreed but I have a question. I have people saying that people who are cremated that it’s ok because of the verse Ashes to ashes and dust to dust. Please explain that verse
It’s like a journey but he didn’t say as to where the non believers or fake Christians end up? Do they just remain in ground or in the earthly realm awaiting judgment? Do the believers go to heaven? What does he mean by Journey? I thought the whole point of the earthly life WAS the journey.
Fr. with all due respect and forgive my ignorance, but it seems you are arguing from silence just because the word “immediately” isn’t included in the verses you brought up. I heard no argument for a long journey of the soul either. Even the description of St. Anthony’s vision. The souls moving past the Satan with no anxiety or concern, moving upwards doesn’t describe this long journey. On the contrary, seems what Paul is describing. Where does this tradition come from? Thank you.
Just as it is not proper to add the word "immediately" to the various Scriptures cited, neither is it appropriate to expand those verses into an indeterminate journey. Something happens, that much is assured from the story of the rich man and Lazarus, but whether that happens in a moment or in a longer period of time is not revealed there. It also needs to be noted that the Orthodox funeral service does not speak of a journey but simply describes the one who has died as "departed this life." We would be wise to be as equally reserved in what we say regarding one who has died.
I am a bit confused. You said that the thief who repented entered heaven without needed baptism because baptism did not exist yet, however we see Jesus getting baptized along with others. Can you elaborate some more on this?
Hold on a minute, Father. With all due respect, I have a question. You said we pray for the people who are in Hades, but during Pascha, we exclaimed that Christ went into and destroyed Hades. Now which is it.?
6:36 I cannot subscribe to that interpretation in good conscience, for I would feel dishonest reading those words of St Paul in this way. It seems obvious to me that St Paul believes he would be immediately with Christ if he departed from this life when he says: "But I am straitened between two: having a desire to be dissolved and to be with Christ, a thing by far the better. But to abide still in the flesh, is needful for you."
Interesting opinions. A little challenging for me. He dismisses other opinions because they were based on Scripture's silence and other people's opinions. Then he presents his own opinions based on Scripture's silence and other people's opinions. Very definitely worth the 20 minutes, but not something I wish to build my faith on in any degree.
The state of the dead according to the word of God. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof *thou shalt surely die* {Genesis 2:17} Man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? ... So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their *sleep* O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, *until thy wrath be past* that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, 👉till my change come. ... His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. {Job 14:10, 12-14 & 21} And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my *flesh* shall I see God. {Job 19:26} Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. {The Preacher 9:10} Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. {Psalm 146:3-4} Then said his disciples, Lord, if he *sleep* he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, "Lazarus is dead." {John 11:12-14} ... Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection 👉at the last day. Jesus said unto her, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet *shall* he live:" {John 11:24-25} But go thou thy way till the end be: for *thou shalt rest* and stand in thy lot *at the end of the days* {Daniel 12:13} For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him *should not perish* but have everlasting life. {John 3:16} And *the serpent said* unto the woman, *Ye shall not surely die* {Genesis 3:4} Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down *in the midst of the stones of fire* {Isaiah 28:14} ^ (satan always turns the tables on God, for he is the father of lies.) The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; {Isaiah 33:14-15} If anyone errors in their understanding of this doctrine of the dead, then they will in no way be led to the understanding of the truth, for it will be a stumblingblock unto the decernment of spiritual things, including soilterology and eschatology.
Your explanation of Christ's words to the thief on the cross was poor. "Today, you will be with me in Paradise" is very clear and deserves far better explanation. You can't just brush off what Christ said like that.
I wonder what the interpolation of Lazarus being carried to Abraham's bosom would be? And, interesting that when it comes to proving the journey of the soul, so-called, no references to the Sacred Scripture is offered.
Buy and read the book "The Departure of the Soul: According to the Teaching of the Orthodox Church". It will show that the vision by St. Anthony is attested to by Scripture, Christian liturgical hymns and worship, and writings of the Church Fathers.
According to the Orthodox Church, Christ’s baptism was A) a prefigurement of His death and resurrection, ie., the defeat of hell and B) a revelation of the Trinity-the Father spoke from Heaven, the Son was baptized, the Spirit descended in the form of a dove. Christ was not baptized for the dead according to Orthodox teaching. St. John’s baptism was for repentance according to the New Testament. Christian Baptism-Baptism “into Christ”-into His death and Resurrection-did not exist prior to Christ’s establishment of His Church. Christian water Baptism in the Name of Father, Son & Holy Spirit is what unites us to Christ in His Church.
The apostles received the holy Spirit before being baptized. You are quoting someone "Saint Anthony" who seems to have had a dream and you take it at face value not knowing if it's just a regular dream like everyone else's and we are suppose to think that is real and should become doctrine????? That's why there is so many today claiming to dream while in heaven or hell and are making tons of money. I'm shocked that the church would follow someone's dream. Oh you might say it's a Saint, well let me remind you that the Bible calls all believers saints and it's not up to a church or pastor to make it ordain someone to be a Saint. Bible is clear and makes distinction from a believer and a non believer and the believers are called saints and there many examples on this in the Bible. I would much rather listen to Paul when he says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord just like the Bible tells us, the blinking of an eye. I agree with many of the Orthodox doctrines but there are some that are unbiblical.
Thank you Martin Luther - Sola scriptura!!! God’s word is sooooo much more reliable. Man / Saint is not infallable. I’ll place my trust in the word of God, thank you!

I am a bit confused. You said that the thief who repented entered heaven without needed baptism because baptism did not exist yet, however we see Jesus getting baptized along with others. Can you elaborate some more on this?
Where do we get the merch?
Rad hat man .... I mean Father. 0:-)
But the Saints, Mary etc. are now in Heaven? How do we know that? No disrespect.
Nice hat father
Interesting opinions. A little challenging for me. He dismisses other opinions because they were based on Scripture's silence and other people's opinions. Then he presents his own opinions based on Scripture's silence and other people's opinions. Very definitely worth the 20 minutes, but not something I wish to build my faith on in any degree.
3rd or forth time re listening to you Its difficult trying to follow what you're saying
So what about the the thief on the cross journey of his soul when Christ says to him “today you will be with me in paradise”?
He addresses this within the first 5 min of the video
And fails
"How to be Christian" has a good video titled "thief on cross"
Turned off by the advertising
But jesus went and baptised , wasnt the holy spirit involved ?
The state of the dead according to the word of God.
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof *thou shalt surely die*
{Genesis 2:17}
Man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their *sleep*
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, *until thy wrath be past* that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait,

{Job 14:10, 12-14 & 21}
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my *flesh* shall I see God.
{Job 19:26}
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.
{Psalm 146:3-4}
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he *sleep* he shall do well.
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, "Lazarus is dead."

(satan always turns the tables on God, for he is the father of lies.)
The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
{Isaiah 33:14-15}
If anyone errors in their understanding of this doctrine of the dead, then they will in no way be led to the understanding of the truth, for it will be a stumblingblock unto the decernment of spiritual things, including soilterology and eschatology.
Your explanation of Christ's words to the thief on the cross was poor. "Today, you will be with me in Paradise" is very clear and deserves far better explanation. You can't just brush off what Christ said like that.
So, Jesus plundered Hades and took all previous sinners with him?! Even the sinners from Sodom?
I'm thinking it's those who were at Abraham's bosom not the other side of the chasm
I wonder what the interpolation of Lazarus being carried to Abraham's bosom would be? And, interesting that when it comes to proving the journey of the soul, so-called, no references to the Sacred Scripture is offered.
oh hes dripped out
So is this theory on the soul's travel after death based entirely off one vision by St. Anthony?
Buy and read the book "The Departure of the Soul: According to the Teaching of the Orthodox Church". It will show that the vision by St. Anthony is attested to by Scripture, Christian liturgical hymns and worship, and writings of the Church Fathers.
@@davidroutledge6314 So…yes?
@@Deadline247 There have been other saints as well, like Saint Theodora
@@Deadline247 Yes.
@Deadline247 To clarify, there are multiple Orthodox saints who have seen and have attested to these things.
My dude had a hat on. 😂
the spirit, not the soul
Very funny, Father.
The catholic church accepts cremation now
Nice tease Father 😂😂
What an opening 😂
Lazar puhalo
I want a hat !
Baptism did exist. That is why Jesus received baptism from John, He took baptism for the unbaptized.
Are you perchance assuming baptism is no linger a prerequisite to be a member of the body , perchance?. Forgive me pls.
@@simplyapleb9027 not at all! Just saying the Lord and judge has figured all things beyond our comprehension

I need that hat!!! 🤔☦️
🙏 PLEASE be serious 🙏 We are EXTREMELY tired of protestant pastors joking 🙏 Please don't start acting like the Protestants 🙏

Make up stories about how it's going to be easy? You just based your entire theology of the after life upon a dream.
Practice humility if you don't know what you speak of.
