  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S3 Ep25, Installing new handlebars and risers on the DR650.
    In this episode, I will show you all the steps I took to install a new set of fat bars on my DR650. This is an easy project for most home mechanics but there are a few things to keep in mind if you tackle this project. Overall, I try my best to take you though the entire project so you can see what is involved before you tackle it yourself.
    Please keep in mind I am not a mechanic myself but just a guy who likes to tinker so please check with the manufacturer of any parts you put on your bike before you begin to ensure you are doing it right.
    As always, I have included chapters below so you can skip around, I realize I am bit long winded, so I do my best to let you skip though my jabbering.

      Thank you for the comment and the feedback, I am so happy you enjoy the content and you are spot on, I make my videos with the idea that a person is new to the sport and want to be as detailed as possible so they can see what they will be in for before they start. The disclaimer was a bit of a poke at those who not only prefer a bit quicker pace but also can not figure out I don't want to be like everyone else on you tube.

    Dino!! Another great video. Just a comment on the message at the intro- to me, the way you take your time with your videos to truly expand on these topics is what makes your channel and videos so great! Let the impatient trolls go somewhere else. The reason I watch and like all of your shows is because of all that you put into them. I saw your videos and I subscribed because they are great and you have already helped me a lot, I disassembled the complete motorcycle, only the chassis, engine and harness remain. cables for inspection, cleaning and complete lubrication. Today you surprised me again with the information I was looking for on the handlebar bases and I found them on Aliexpress, I was looking to move further forward and these Otoms come with that configuration, then I will choose the handlebar. Hi Dino. I have had difficulties finding the right size length of bar for my -97 Freewind. The old original has a length of about 750 mm, but those sold in this country seems to be about 800+. If I use one of those I am afraid I have to change all the cables as well, for being too short. Another issue is the length of the bar where the clamp sits, the original is about 170mm, most of the new ones are 200mm. This might also be an issue. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about these questions? Is it advisable to cut the length of the bar 20mm on each side?

    Help. My husband and I have 2 dr650’s and are aching to get out on the trails together! But his dr650 brakes refuse to come in. We have changed all the parts, sone of them several times, and we can’t figure out why air is still in the system. We have a new master cylinder, a new metal fuel line, new bolts at he bottom, and have primed the cylinder several times. Everything is tight . How many months does it take to bleed the brakes? We have even used a pump to suck the fluid down through the system. Any suggestions?

    • @DinosTinkerShed
      @DinosTinkerShed  7 месяцев назад

      I am sorry I missed this question and am just seeing it now. I hope you have resolved the issue, again I am not a mechanic but I have also had frustrations in the past with power sport braked on quads and motorcycles. I don't have a definitive answer for you but can pass on a few tips that have helped me before in the past that seem simple but may help.
      The first is really simple but has given me frustrations before and that is to make sure to replace the master cylinder cap before you start to bleed the brakes, this is a pain if you have screws holding on the cap but I have had a few bikes that the brakes just would not bleed right without the cap on.
      You can also try attaching a hose to the bleed screw, place it in a container and just open the bleed screw allowing the fluid to flow through the system. You will need to keep the cap off and add fluid as it drains through, but after 2 minutes or so you can close the screw and this often pushed out any remaining air. Tis does not work on all bikes but again this has worked for me in the past especially in automotive applications
      The last thing that has worked for me is again with the cap on the master, I cycle the brake lever quickly half a dozen times before holding the lever and then opening the bleed screw. typically you would gently cycle the lever but I have found fast cycling sometines seems to help.
      Again, I am sorry for the late reply, please let me know how you make out.

    Off topic. Have you had issues with your steering lock at all? Mines a 2023 I put 6,200 miles on it this year and it no longer locks when I turn the wheel all the way to the left.
    Never had a problem before, just recently. I even go back about an inch after wheel turned all the way where it supposed to lock.

      @@DinosTinkerShed btw your videos are amazing. Well explained and shown in detail! Hows that procycle jet kit still running for ya with the 150 main jet and stock airbox?
      I been debating between procycle or dynojet kit. Dyno’s kit says to go to knotch 3 with the 150 jet.
      I kno yours with procycle was knotch 4 on the needle with 150 jet.

    Any tips on how to "square up" the bars after swap?

    • @DinosTinkerShed
      @DinosTinkerShed  7 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry for the late reply on this.
      There is a bit of "adjustment" on the risers that can allow you to pull the bars square. If you can get the bike set op straight on blocks or cribbing under the frame rails. place a straight edge such as a straight piece of lumber along the back tire and measure the fount tire to make sure it is parallel to the back, you may need keep to hold it straight.
      Measure from the end of both the clutch side and throttle side of the bar to a fixed point on the bike such as the front rake bolt on each side. loosen the riser bolts and twist the bars until both measurements are equal then tighten up the risers.
      Hope this helps
